Installing the NAE/NIE
Introduction
The Network Automation Engine (NAE)/Network Integration Engine
(NIE) monitors and supervises networks of devices that typically
control Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
equipment, lighting, security, and building access. The NAE/NIE unit
is delivered with the operating system software already installed, but
the user needs to provide site-specific data. Through a standard Web
browser interface, the NAE/NIE provides features including alarm and
event management, trending, archiving, energy management, data
exchange, scheduling, dial features, and password protection.
This technical bulletin describes the hardware features of the
NAE/NIE and how to:
•mount the NAE/NIE
•install the data protection battery
•wire the NAE/NIE
•turn off the NAE/NIE

applies to the NAE and the NIE.

The NAE and NIE have one Ethernet port, two RS-232 ports,
two USB ports, and (optionally) a 6-pin modem port for an internal
modem (Figure 1). The NAE additionally has two N2 ports. The NIE
is enabled for N1 communication using the Ethernet port. Refer to
Table 2 and Table 3 for the code numbers of the NAE products,
including those with an internal modem.
Note: The NAE internal modem cannot be added in the field.

function of the NAE in a Metasys system. For software configuration
details, see the Configuring the Network Automation Engine (NAE)

configured and running, use the online Help for user information.

NAE Ports
Power
The NAE requires 24 VAC power. The minimum input voltage for the
NAE to operate properly is 20 VAC, but a minimum of 22 VAC is
recommended to prevent nuisance power shutdown and startup
routines during brownout conditions. When the input voltage falls
below the 22 VAC, the NAE initiates a shutdown routine, storing
operations data in the nonvolatile memory for protection through the
power failure. Maximum power consumption is 50 VA.
Connect 24 VAC power to terminals 1 and 3 (see Figure 2). You can
remove line power by removing the power terminal block from the
NAE.

Note: When you remove line power, the NAE is still powered by
the battery and it takes approximately 1 to 6 minutes for the NAE to
completely power down, depending on the size of the database. The
NAE unit is completely powered down when the POWER LED is off.
See Wiring the NAE in this document for more information on the
power connection.
Note: In North America, use an AS-XFR100-1 or AS-XFR010-1
100 VA power transformer to provide adequate power. We do not
recommend that the transformer share its load with other devices.
Outside North America, use a safety-isolating transformer at the
appropriate rating. These transformers are robust units, which provide
proper operating conditions and limit noise problems.

N2 Bus Ports (N2 A, N2 B) (NAE Only)
The two N2 connections on the NAE are 4-pin removable, keyed
terminal blocks (Figure 3). See the System Configuration Tool
Technical Bulletin (LIT-1201534) for more information on using the
NAE with N2 networks.

The Shield connection (S) on the N2 ports of the NAE is not
connected to any Ground connection. S is an open terminal that can be
used as a splice connection. The N2 A and N2 B terminal blocks are
not interchangeable.
PC Serial Ports (SER A, SER B)
RS-232 ports on the NAE are used for direct connection using a
standard 9-pin female to 9-pin female, Data Terminal Equipment
(DTE) to DTE null modem cable (Figure 4):

Use port A to connect directly to a Personal Computer (PC) serial port
to browse to the NAE. See the Direct Connect and Dial-Up Connection
on Windows® 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems Application
Note (LIT-1201639). Use Port B to connect with a VT100 terminal or
PC using a VT100 terminal emulator because Port B outputs the device
Internet Protocol (IP) address. See the Configuring the Network
Automation Engine (NAE) Technical Bulletin (LIT-1201519).
USB Ports (USB A and USB B)
The two USB ports are configured as masters and are independent of
each other. USB A and USB B support the pinouts in Figure 5.

It is possible to connect an external modem with a USB slave port
connection to one of the USB ports. External modems are
recommended for easy replacement especially in lightning-prone
areas. The external modem does not protect against lightning but
offers a fast fix for a unit with a damaged internal modem. Two
modem drivers are pre-installed on the NAE: the Zoom® Telephonics
2985 modem and Multi Tech® MT5634ZBA-USB modem.

Ethernet Port
The Ethernet connection (10 or 100 Mb/sec) in the NAE is through an
8-pin RJ-45 network port (Figure 6).

Internal Modem (RJ11)
The optional internal modem port is a 6-pin RJ11 connector. Insert a
phone line into this port to use the NAE internal modem. To connect
an external modem, use one of the USB ports.

LEDs
The NAE has 11 LEDs to indicate the unit’s power and
communication status. Figure 7 shows the LEDs and Table 4 describes
their meaning.

On Steady On Steady = Unit is getting power from either the battery or 24 VAC power. Also
see the 24 VAC LED.
Off Steady = Unit is shut down.
ETHERNET
(GREEN)
Flicker Flicker = Data is transferring on the Ethernet connection. Ethernet traffic is
general traffic (may not be for the NAE).
Off Steady = No Ethernet traffic, probably indicates a dead Ethernet network or
bad Ethernet connection.

(GREEN)
On Steady On Steady = Ethernet connection is established at 10 Mb/sec.
100/LINK

N2 A

Flicker Flicker = N2 A port is transmitting or receiving data. Flickers are generally in
synch with data transmission but should not be used to indicate specific
transmission times.

Flicker Flicker = N2 B port is transmitting or receiving data. Flickers are generally in
synch with data transmission but should not be used to indicate specific

Flicker = Data traffic between NAE devices. For an NAE that is not a Site
Director, this LED indicates regular heartbeat communications with the Site
Director. For a Site Director NAE, flashes are more frequent and indicate
heartbeat communications from all other NAE devices on the site.
Run (GREEN) On Steady On Steady = NAE software is running.
On 1 second, Off 1 second = NAE software is in startup mode.
On 0.5 seconds, Off 0.5 seconds = NAE software is shutting down.
Off Steady = Operating system is shutting down or software is not running.

(GREEN)
On Steady On Steady = 24 VAC power present
Off Steady = Loss of 24 VAC power. In the Off Steady condition, the NAE can be
running on battery power. Also see the POWER LED.
BATT FAULT
(RED)
Off Steady On Steady = Battery fault. Replace the battery.
GENL FAULT
(RED)
Off Steady On Steady = General Fault. Fault conditions include excessive Central
Processing Unit (CPU), flash or memory use, or excessive CPU or Printed Wire
Board (PWB) temperature. In normal operation, the GENL FAULT LED stays on
steady for the first half of the startup sequence.

During startup, the NAE automatically runs an LED test to verify the
operational status of the LEDs. Immediately after a start, the LED
lighting sequence occurs as follows:
1. The PEER COM, RUN, and GENL FAULT LEDs turn on,
indicating that the Operating System (OS) is booting up. For the
NAE, the N2A and N2B LEDs also turn on.
2. The N2A, N2B, PEER COM, RUN, and GENL FAULT LEDs
shut off. The RUN LED flashes to indicate that the NAE software
is loading.
3. The operational status of the NAE displays (see Table 1). When
the RUN LED goes On Steady, the application is running and the
unit is ready.
The total time to power up the NAE depends on the size of the
database and can take is several minutes. Figure 7 shows the locations
of the LEDs.
