Installing the NAE/NIE
Introduction
The Network Automation Engine (NAE)/Network Integration Engine
(NIE) monitors and supervises networks of devices that typically
control Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
equipment, lighting, security, and building access. The NAE/NIE unit
is delivered with the operating system software already installed, but
the user needs to provide site-specific data. Through a standard Web
browser interface, the NAE/NIE provides features including alarm and
event management, trending, archiving, energy management, data
exchange, scheduling, dial features, and password protection.
This technical bulletin describes the hardware features of the
NAE/NIE and how to:
•mount the NAE/NIE
•install the data protection battery
•wire the NAE/NIE
•turn off the NAE/NIE
Notes: Unless otherwise noted, the information in this document
applies to the NAE and the NIE.

The NAE and NIE have one Ethernet port, two RS-232 ports,
two USB ports, and (optionally) a 6-pin modem port for an internal
modem (Figure 1). The NAE additionally has two N2 ports. The NIE
is enabled for N1 communication using the Ethernet port. Refer to
Table 2 and Table 3 for the code numbers of the NAE products,
including those with an internal modem.
Note: The NAE internal modem cannot be added in the field.

function of the NAE in a Metasys system. For software configuration

NAE Ports
Power
The NAE requires 24 VAC power. The minimum input voltage for the
NAE to operate properly is 20 VAC, but a minimum of 22 VAC is
recommended to prevent nuisance power shutdown and startup
routines during brownout conditions. When the input voltage falls
below the 22 VAC, the NAE initiates a shutdown routine, storing
operations data in the nonvolatile memory for protection through the
power failure. Maximum power consumption is 50 VA.
Connect 24 VAC power to terminals 1 and 3 (see Figure 2). You can
remove line power by removing the power terminal block from the
NAE.

Note: When you remove line power, the NAE is still powered by
the battery and it takes approximately 1 to 6 minutes for the NAE to
completely power down, depending on the size of the database. The
NAE unit is completely powered down when the POWER LED is off.
See Wiring the NAE in this document for more information on the
power connection.
Note: In North America, use an AS-XFR100-1 or AS-XFR010-1
100 VA power transformer to provide adequate power. We do not
recommend that the transformer share its load with other devices.
Outside North America, use a safety-isolating transformer at the
appropriate rating. These transformers are robust units, which provide
proper operating conditions and limit noise problems.

N2 Bus Ports (N2 A, N2 B) (NAE Only)
The two N2 connections on the NAE are 4-pin removable, keyed
terminal blocks (Figure 3). See the System Configuration Tool
Technical Bulletin (LIT-1201534) for more information on using the
NAE with N2 networks.

The Shield connection (S) on the N2 ports of the NAE is not
connected to any Ground connection. S is an open terminal that can be
used as a splice connection. The N2 A and N2 B terminal blocks are
not interchangeable.
PC Serial Ports (SER A, SER B)
RS-232 ports on the NAE are used for direct connection using a
standard 9-pin female to 9-pin female, Data Terminal Equipment
(DTE) to DTE null modem cable (Figure 4):

Use port A to connect directly to a Personal Computer (PC) serial port
to browse to the NAE. See the Direct Connect and Dial-Up Connection
on Windows® 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems Application
Note (LIT-1201639). Use Port B to connect with a VT100 terminal or
PC using a VT100 terminal emulator because Port B outputs the device
Internet Protocol (IP) address. See the Configuring the Network
Automation Engine (NAE) Technical Bulletin (LIT-1201519).
USB Ports (USB A and USB B)
The two USB ports are configured as masters and are independent of
each other. USB A and USB B support the pinouts in Figure 5.

It is possible to connect an external modem with a USB slave port
connection to one of the USB ports. External modems are
recommended for easy replacement especially in lightning-prone
areas. The external modem does not protect against lightning but
offers a fast fix for a unit with a damaged internal modem. Two
modem drivers are pre-installed on the NAE: the Zoom® Telephonics
2985 modem and Multi Tech® MT5634ZBA-USB modem.

Ethernet Port
The Ethernet connection (10 or 100 Mb/sec) in the NAE is through an
8-pin RJ-45 network port (Figure 6).

Internal Modem (RJ11)
The optional internal modem port is a 6-pin RJ11 connector. Insert a
phone line into this port to use the NAE internal modem. To connect
an external modem, use one of the USB ports.

LEDs
The NAE has 11 LEDs to indicate the unit’s power and
communication status. Figure 7 shows the LEDs and Table 4 describes
their meaning.

On Steady On Steady = Unit is getting power from either the battery or 24 VAC power. Also
see the 24 VAC LED.
Off Steady = Unit is shut down.
ETHERNET
(GREEN)
Flicker Flicker = Data is transferring on the Ethernet connection. Ethernet traffic is
general traffic (may not be for the NAE).
Off Steady = No Ethernet traffic, probably indicates a dead Ethernet network or
bad Ethernet connection.

Flicker = Data traffic between NAE devices. For an NAE that is not a Site
Director, this LED indicates regular heartbeat communications with the Site
Director. For a Site Director NAE, flashes are more frequent and indicate
heartbeat communications from all other NAE devices on the site.
Run (GREEN) On Steady On Steady = NAE software is running.
On 1 second, Off 1 second = NAE software is in startup mode.
On 0.5 seconds, Off 0.5 seconds = NAE software is shutting down.
Off Steady = Operating system is shutting down or software is not running.

Off Steady = Loss of 24 VAC power. In the Off Steady condition, the NAE can be
running on battery power. Also see the POWER LED.
BATT FAULT
(RED)
Off Steady On Steady = Battery fault. Replace the battery.
GENL FAULT
(RED)
Off Steady On Steady = General Fault. Fault conditions include excessive Central
Processing Unit (CPU), flash or memory use, or excessive CPU or Printed Wire
Board (PWB) temperature. In normal operation, the GENL FAULT LED stays on
steady for the first half of the startup sequence.

During startup, the NAE automatically runs an LED test to verify the
operational status of the LEDs. Immediately after a start, the LED
lighting sequence occurs as follows:
1. The PEER COM, RUN, and GENL FAULT LEDs turn on,
indicating that the Operating System (OS) is booting up. For the
NAE, the N2A and N2B LEDs also turn on.
2. The N2A, N2B, PEER COM, RUN, and GENL FAULT LEDs
shut off. The RUN LED flashes to indicate that the NAE software
is loading.
3. The operational status of the NAE displays (see Table 1). When
the RUN LED goes On Steady, the application is running and the
unit is ready.
The total time to power up the NAE depends on the size of the
database and can take is several minutes. Figure 7 shows the locations
of the LEDs.

Batteries
The NAE uses two batteries, one for clock backup and another for data
protection. Battery life can be shorter than expected if your system
experiences the following conditions:
•extremely high or low ambient temperatures
•frequent power cycling
•long periods of power loss
Clock Backup Battery
The NAE contains a battery on the circuit board that provides standby
power to the clock if power is lost. The Metasys system extended
architecture system uses Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) for
time synchronization, but the clock backup battery is still required to
keep clock time during a power loss/shutdown.
The life of the clock battery in typically is in excess of 10 years.

for battery testing and replacement information. Replacing the clock
battery requires the intervention of specially trained service personnel
and is best done during a planned system shutdown.
Data Protection Battery
The NAE also contains a rechargeable and accessible battery to protect
the data in the NAE volatile memory in case of power loss. If power
fails, the NAE shuts down using battery power and saves field data to
the flash memory. The battery does not allow the NAE to function as
it would under regular power (for example, alarm messaging,
command execution, trend data collection). In critical environments,
connect the NAE to a backup power source or emergency generator to
ensure that the NAE continues its supervisory duties during a general
utilities power failure. The typical life of the data protection battery is
3 to 5 years.

battery can be replaced in the field.
Mounting Feet
The mounting feet are designed to make mounting easier. If you mount
the NAE in the preferred wall mounting orientation, you can insert the
top fasteners into the mounting surface and hang the NAE until you
are ready to install the other two fasteners.

Installation Considerations
General Notes: All Installations
Consider the following before installing the NAE:
•Do gather the tools you need:
-four fasteners appropriate for the mounting surface (the holes
in the mounting feet are sized for #8 screws)
-screwdriver for tightening mounting screws
-screwdriver for securing communication wires in the terminal
blocks
•Do transport the NAE using only the original container to prevent
vibration and shock damage to the unit.
•Do allow sufficient space for cable connections. The actual
mounting area required for the NAE is approximately 408 mm
(16.1 in.) wide, 303 mm (11.9 in.) high, and 148 mm (5.8 in.) deep.
See Figure 9.
•Do provide slack in the wires so that you have enough room to
make connections to the NAE. Keep cables routed neatly around
the NAE to promote good ventilation, LED visibility, and ease of
service.
•Do make sure the mounting surface can support the NAE and the
added weight of the enclosure (if used). The NAE weighs
approximately 2.8 kg (6.3 lb).
•Do refer to Correct Mounting Orientations and Mounting the NAE
for mounting details. Mounting orientations vary depending on the
mounting technique you use.
•Do make sure the mounting surface for a wall-mount installation is
even. If you must mount on an uneven surface, be careful to not
over tighten screws and crack the unit. If necessary, use shims or
washers to make sure the unit is secure on the mounting surface.
•Do make sure you have all the parts shipped with the NAE
(Figure 8). The data protection battery and NAE unit ship together
but are packaged separately.
•Do not mount in areas with corrosive vapors in the atmosphere and
respect the environmental limitations listed in Table 5.

•Do not mount in areas that are prone to vibration, such as
ductwork, and areas where electromagnetic emissions from other
devices can interfere with NAE communication.
•Do not drop the unit or strike it with tools.
•Do not share the power transformer 24 VAC secondary with
another load (could cause noise interference).
•Do not open the unit. The NAE has no user-serviceable parts
inside.
•Do not route the communication cables within 50 mm (2 inches)
of the vents slots in the sides the NAE housing.
•Do not install the NAE in an airtight enclosure.
Additional Notes for Enclosure Installations
If you plan to use an enclosure where the operating ambient
temperature is ever expected to reach 50°C (122°F) within the
enclosure, closely follow the considerations in General Notes: All
Installations and the following:
•Do not mount any heat-generating devices in the enclosure with
the NAE other than its power transformer and modem.
•Do not mount the power transformer below the NAE.
•Do not mount the NAE such that the enclosure wall or the
transformer obstructs its venting.
•Do understand that if you maintain temperature with a cooling fan,
the reliability of the fan is not guaranteed and you may need to
monitor the fan or temperature.

•Do add additional devices to the enclosure as long as the
temperature of the processor is maintained below 77°C (171°F) per
the readout of the processor chip’s embedded temperature sensor.

Note: No general guidance can be given about the number of
heat-dissipating devices that can be mounted in a panel with the NAE.
The acceptable combinations of devices and mounting locations can be
determined only by testing the installation.

Wiring Considerations
N2 Bus (NAE Only)
Table 6 summarizes the rules and maximum allowances for installing
the N2 Bus. For more information on N2 Bus rules, and for details on
N2 Bus applications, see the N2 Communications Bus Technical
Bulletin (LIT-636018). For information on setting up your database
with an N2 Bus integration, see System Configuration Tool Technical
Bulletin (LIT-1201534).

The NAE has two End-of-Line (EOL) switch blocks, one for each N2
Bus. Each block has two slide switches to switch in a 220 ohm EOL
resistor and 1200 ohm bias resistor to terminate the N2 Bus (shown in
Figure 12). The EOL resistors are switched in when the switches are
set towards the side marked ON. The NAE is delivered with the
switches in the ON position.

To remove the EOL terminations, move both switches on the block to
the side marked 1 2. Set the switch blocks appropriately for the N2-A
and N2-B buses. Both EOL switches on one block should be ON if the
NAE is an end (terminating) device on the corresponding N2 Bus. The
NAE follows the same rules as other switch-terminating devices listed
in the Setting Terminations section of the N2 Communications Bus
Technical Bulletin (LIT-636018).
Ethernet Network
Table 7 shows the rules for the Ethernet network.

System RE-BOOT Switch
The system RE-BOOT switch forces a manual restart of the NAE
processor and you lose all changes you made to the system since the
last time the NAE saved, including alarm, trend, and audit trail data.
Press the RE-BOOT switch only if the NAE fails to respond and
cannot be accessed by any user device.

Important: Do not press the system RE-BOOT switch unless you have
tried other reasonable means to fix the problem. When you press the system
RE-BOOT switch, you lose all changes made to system data in the NAE
since the last save, including audit data.

Detailed Procedures
Mounting the NAE
Notes: Mounting options for the NAE include wall mount, DIN rail,
and enclosure. Before you install the NAE, make sure the mounting
environment is suitable for the controller. See Installation
Considerations for the NAE environmental tolerances. For information
on mounting orientations and space allowances, see Correct Mounting
Orientations and Mounting Space in Key Concepts.
To remove the NAE from the mounting surface, follow these
instructions in reverse, after you have removed line power from the
NAE and removed the network connections.
Wall Mount
To mount the NAE on a wall (or other vertical surface):
1. Mark the locations of the four mounting holes using Figure 11 or
by holding the unit up to the wall as a template.
Note: Allow enough space for making cable connections to the
NAE. The proposed mounting space should be at least
408 x 303 x 148 mm (16.1 x 11.9 x 5.8 in.).

2. Drill holes in the wall in the mounting feet locations you marked
in Step 1.
3. Insert appropriate wall anchors in all four holes (if necessary) and
inset screws into the top two holes and hang the NAE on the
screws.
4. Insert the screws into the last two mounting feet.

5. Tighten the screws.
Note: If you must mount on an uneven surface, do not over tighten
the screws. Over tightening screws can crack the unit.
6. Install the data protection battery and wire the NAE.
See Installing the Data Protection Battery and Wiring the NAE for
details.
DIN Rails
To mount the NAE on DIN rails:
1. Mount two DIN rails horizontally so they measure 125+0.5 mm
(4.9+0.02 in.) apart (top to top).
2. Snap the DIN clips on the bottom of the unit to the outboard load
position.
3. Hang the NAE on both DIN rails at the same time using the DIN
rail hooks on the back of the unit (see Callout 17 in Figure 1).
4. Press the DIN clips back into position to secure the unit on the
DIN rails.
5. Install the data protection battery and wire the NAE.

To remove the NAE from the DIN rails:
1. Snap the DIN clips on the bottom of the unit to the outboard load
position.
2. Lift the unit off the DIN rails.
Enclosure
To mount the NAE in an enclosure:
1. Mount the enclosure per the manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Mount the NAE in the enclosure per the manufacturer’s
instructions, following the recommendations in the Correct
Mounting Orientations and Installation Considerations sections
of this document.
3. Install the data protection battery and wire the NAE.
