JU NG H A N S – TH E GE RM AN WAT CH
Many congratu ations on your purchase of a timepiece from
Junghans.
What began in 1861 with the founding of the firm in Schramberg
quick y deve oped into one of the most fascinating success stories
of the German watchmaking industry. Whi e since that time the
demands made of watches may have changed, the Junghans
phi osophy has a ways remained the same. Innovative f air and
the constant pursuit of precision right down to the sma est detai
define how the company works and thinks. You can see and sense
this in every watch that carries the Junghans name. For as diverse
as the Junghans range may be, it pursues one sing e goa : to
combine traditiona craftsmanship with cutting-edge watch
techno ogy and exciting design. That makes every watch with the
Junghans star unique.
We hope you wi enjoy this very specia time-keeping instrument.
Yours,

1. Radio technology
The most up-to-date way to keep time.
5,000 years have passed since timekeeping began with sundia s. In the
interim there have been water c ocks, the mechanica c ocks of the 13th
century and quartz watches. Now we have the Junghans radio-contro -
ed watch. This is a watch that, with good reception, wi never go
wrong and never need setting. The Junghans radio-contro ed watch is
abso ute y precise, as it is inked via radio techno ogy to the timing con-
tro of the most accurate c ock in the wor d, For Europe this is the
Caesium Time Base at the Physika isch-Technischen Bundesansta t in
Braunschweig (Germany’s Institute of Natura and Engineering
Sciences). For Japan the Caesium Time Base of the Nationa Institute
for Information and Communications Techno ogy (NICT), a pub ic
administration authority organisation. For North America it is the U.S.
Commerce Department’s Caesium Time Base at the Nationa Institute
of Standards and Techno ogy (NIST) in Bou der, Co orado. These c ocks
are so accurate that they are expected to deviate by no more than 1
second in a mi ion years.
3130
Your Junghans mu ti-frequency radio-contro ed so ar-powered watch
is ab e to automatica y pick up time signa s from the fo owing trans-
mitters:
– DCF77 in Mainf ingen (24km south of Frankfurt am Main) for
Europe,
– JJY40 on Mount Ohtakadoya (near Tokyo in the North East of the
country) for Japan
– JJY60 on Mount Hagane (in the South West of Japan) for Japan,
the East Coast of China (Shanghai), South Korea and parts of
Taiwan
– WWVB in Fort Co ins, Co orado (USA) for America
This means that within range of one of these 4 transmitter stations
your Junghans mu ti-frequency radio-contro ed so ar-powered watch
wi disp ay the exact time when reception conditions are adequate.
Junghans radio-contro ed wristwatches automatica y synchronise
themse ves every day with the DCF77, JJY40, JJY60 and WWVB time
signa transmitters. If your Junghans mu ti-frequency radio-contro ed
so ar-powered watch is unab e to receive a signa due to interference
(e.g. thunder storms, e ectronic devices, ighting dimmer switches) it
wi automatica y attempt to receive a signa the fo owing day at the
same time. The time can a so be synchronised manua y by ca ing a
transmitter e. g. from a p ace with better reception. The most recent
time information received is stored in an interna time memory. This
time is then kept by a high-precision 32 kHz quartz osci ator unti the
next time your watch is synchronised. The radio-contro ed time syn-
chronisation function of your Junghans mu ti-frequency radio-contro -
ed so ar-powered watch not on y ensures tota time accuracy, but a so
automatica y switches (at night) from winter time to day ight saving
time (Europe and North America) and vice-versa when reception is
avai ab e. The Junghans mu ti-frequency radio-contro ed so ar-powe-
red watch time zone adjustment function enab es you to set your
watch to the re evant oca time when trave ing in countries in other
time zones.
3332
2. Environmentally friendly solar technology
Techno ogy that needs no batteries! Light – no matter whether sun-
ight or artificia – penetrates the so ar or ight-transparent watch face.
This transforms the ight into e ectrica energy, which gets saved in a
ong- ife power store. The power store serves as the source of e ectrici-
ty for your mu ti-frequency radio-contro ed so ar-powered movement
J615.84.
3. Automatic time synchronisation
The automatic time synchronisation process a ways takes p ace at
night based on the oca time set on your watch:
EU – DCF 77: at c. 2 a.m. and 3 a.m.
JP – JJY40 and JJY60: c. 2 a.m.
US – WWVB: c. 2 a.m.
At the start of the synchronisation process the LC disp ay automatica -
y switches off. The disp ay remains switched off for the fu duration of
the synchronisation process (max. 9 minutes) or unti this is manua y
aborted. Automatic time synchronisation can be aborted by pressing
any button.
For the USA’s WWVB time signal transmitter the following specific
feature applies:
After a successfu transmitter ca or restart, your Junghans mu ti-
frequency radio-contro ed so ar-powered watch a ways reads in
Pacific Standard Time. Due to the non-uniform changeover from
summer to winter time and the differing time zones in the individu-
a US states, you are given the opportunity to adjust winter time,
summer time and time zone settings (see 6.2) manua y. If, due to
where you are, the time zone or summer / winter time that you have
set differs from PST, it is neverthe ess retained during any subse-
quent transmitter ca or automatic synchronisation.
After automatic time synchronisation has been successfu y perfor-
med, you can see which transmitter the signa was picked up from by
pressing button T1. The time signa a ways changes the date automati-
ca y. In eap years the 29th of February gets automatica y taken into
account. If none of the attempts at picking up a signa ead to c ear syn-
chronisation, the reception indicator gets deactivated (see section 6).
Thanks to the interna time-memory, your watch wi continue to run
during any days without time synchronisation with the precision of a
quartz watch. The next successfu reception of the time signa eads to
synchronisation and the reception indicator on the LC disp ay becomes
activated.
Recommendation: To ensure the best possib e conditions for automa-
tic reception of the time synchronisation signa , the watch shou d not
be worn and, if possib e, not eft near to any e ectrica app iances, mobi-
e or cord ess phones.
3534
It is a so he pfu for picking up the signa to set the appropriate time
zone for your ocation, as an attempt at synchronisation a ways begins
at c. 2 a.m. based on the oca time set on the watch. If the time zone is
wrong, the watch wi try to synchronise with the time signa transmit-
ter that was previous y set.
For examp e: You trave from Europe to Japan. Your watch has CET
saved and tries to synchronise in ine with CET at 10 a.m. in Japan. At
that time of day interference is disproportionate y greater than when
synchronising at night and the chances of optimum reception are thus
ess.
With the time zone set correct y the appropriate transmitter frequen-
cy gets checked as the first priority, thus reducing the ength of the
transmitter check and power consumption.
Important note:
When you trave into a different reception area (e.g. trave ing from
Germany to Japan), automatic time and transmitter synchronisation
does not take p ace unti the watch next picks up a time signa . If the
watch fai s to pick up a time signa , perform a manua transmitter ca
(see section 6.1).
4. Functions
P ease note: depending on mode , your Junghans mu ti-frequency
radio-so ar watch is equipped with pushers or correctors embedded
into the case. To operate the embedded correctors p ease use a suit -
ab e pointed too .
Key lock (depending on model)
Depending on the model of your Junghans multi-frequency radio -
solar watch you have the option of locking the 2 key.
Key lock via security cover:
Slide the security cover between 1 and 2
down wards (in the direction of 2) until it clicks
into place and the red marking is visible.
Sliding the security cover back up (in the direc-
tion of 1) means that all functions of 2 are
available again.
Key lock via crown:
Rotate the crown until it clicks into place and
the red marking is visible, as in the illustration
on the left.
Rotate the crown halfway and all functions of
2 are available again.

5. Selectable LC displays
The LC disp ay is showing the date. By brief y pressing button T1, you
can activate the reception indicator. After 3 seconds, the disp ay swit-
ches back to the date.
If the charge eve is ow, the LC disp ay shows the seconds (f ashing
a ternate y with [Lo]). The second hand stops at the 12 o’c ock position.
6. Reception indicator
The reception indicator shows you whether synchronisation has taken
p ace with one of the time signa transmitters. It can disp ay the four
fo owing codes:
EU = DCF 77 (Europe)
JP = JJY 40 (Japan)
JP. = JJY 60 (Japan)
US = WWVB (USA)
If a time signa transmitter is shown on the LC disp ay, the watch has
picked up the signa during the overnight automatic time synchronisa-
tion. If a that is shown on the LC disp ay is two bars, poor reception
conditions have resu ted in no automatic synchronisation taking p ace.
After the next successfu synchronisation, the re evant time signa
transmitter wi once again be indicated.
P ease note that no time synchronisation occurs in quartz mode (see
chapter 6.3).

ca ’, press button T1 for onger than 3 seconds. The second hand begins
to move and positions itse f at 12 o’c ock. The minute and hour hands
continue to show the current time. The signa reception phase starts as
soon as the indicator on the LC disp ay goes out. Whi e the signa is
being received, p ease keep your watch sti or put it down.
If synchronisation is not possib e with the time signa transmitter
shown, a other transmitters get checked for possib e reception of the
time signa . As soon as the time signa has been picked up, the hands
automatica y move to the time signa transmitter’s oca time and the
date gets shown on the LC disp ay. By pressing button T1 you can see
which transmitter has been picked up. Shou d you be in a time zone
different to that of the time signa transmitter that the watch picked
up, you wi need to set the app icab e oca time for that ocation (see
section 6.2) once synchronisation has been successfu y comp eted.
The time zones disp ayed when picking up the signa from the respec-
tive transmitters are as fo ows:
Transmitter Time transmitted
EU DCF77 (Europe) CET or CEST
JP JJY40 (Japan) Japanese oca time
JP. JJY60 (Japan) Japanese oca time
US WWVB (North America) Pacific Standard Time
If you wish, you can interrupt the manua time synchronisation pro-
cess, as soon as the second hand has moved to the 12 o’c ock position.
To do so, brief y press button T1 or T2. The second hand resets itse f to
the origina time. P ease note that manua time synchronisation is not
possib e if the [Lo] symbo is being shown on the LC disp ay.

6.2 Setting the time zone
Your Junghans mu ti-frequency radio-contro ed so ar-powered watch
is ab e to pick up the DCF77, JJY40, JJY60 and WWVB signa s. Within the
transmitter coverage areas your watch wi thus re iab y disp ay sum-
mer or winter time respective y (WWVB is an exception – see section
13).
If you trave to a country with a different time zone, you can adjust the
time then being disp ayed to the oca time. You set the time zone by
pressing button T2. By ho ding down button T2, you can quick y scro
through a known time zones. The hands run in para e to your setting.
The date a so gets automatica y adjusted when you set the zone.
If you want to reset the time disp ay to the origina time, trigger a
transmitter ca when within the time signa transmitter’s reception
range or press button T2 repeated y unti you have got back to the ori-
gina time.
6.3 Quartz mode
In order to set the time manua y, press both buttons for onger than 3
seconds (or unti the indicator on the LC disp ay goes out). After the
hands have reached the 12 o’c ock position, press button T1. The watch
is now in quartz mode. Quartz mode is indicated by the disp ay sho-
wing the year, e.g. [99]. Every time you press the T2 button the disp ay
advances by one year. Ho ding down button T2 scro s through the
years quick y.
Once you have entered the current year, confirm this with a brief press
of button T1. The LC disp ay now switches to showing the month set-
ting [¡™]. This is again adjusted via the T2 button. Confirm again the
month you have set by brief y pressing button T1.
Perform the fo owing settings using the procedure described above:
– Set the date – the LC disp ay switches to [£¡] (or the fina day in the
month)
– Set the hour – the LC disp ay switches to [™£]
– Set the minutes – the LC disp ay switches to [∞ª]
Note: So that the seconds are shown correct y, set the next fu minute
and then confirm your entry when the seconds reach the 60th second.
After the minutes have been set and subsequent y confirmed by pres-
sing button T1, the hands of the mu ti-frequency radio-contro ed so ar-
powered watch move to the programmed time. The LC disp ay shows
the date. The programmed time can be corrected by ho ding down but-
ton T2 for onger than 3 seconds.
P ease note: The manua setting procedure must be fu y comp eted
before the watch is ready for further operation.
In quartz mode the watch does not perform any automatic attempt to
pick up a time signa . A manua transmitter ca can be made at any
time. A successfu transmitter ca wi overwrite the time set manua -
y and the watch then performs automatic time synchronisation again.

7. Ready for use
In order to keep your Junghans mu ti-frequency radio-contro ed so ar-
powered watch ready for use, it shou d be kept in a very we it p ace.
P ease ensure that the so ar watch face does not get covered for any
pro onged period by items of c othing as this may impair the watch’s
operationa functiona ity.
If the power reserves have run out, ho d your watch in bright ight to
recharge it. How ong it takes to charge up is dependent on the inten-
sity of the ight source and the design of the so ar watch face. The
times given in the tab e on page 43 serve as a guide.
Important note:
Do not keep your Junghans multi-frequency radio-controlled solar-
powered watch too close to any light sources that generate heat! Do
not leave your watch in direct sunlight for any prolonged period!
Temperatures of over 50°C may cause damage to your watch!
8. Charge level indicator on watches using solar power
With the power store fu y charged, the Junghans J615.84 mu ti-fre-
quency radio-contro ed so ar-powered movement has power reserves
to ast up to 21 months. The LC disp ay provides information on the
power status:
[º¡] The date or the reception indicator is being shown. The watch is
fu y operationa .
[º ¡ ] The date is shown, f ashing a ternate y with [Lo]. The watch needs
ight / energy. P ease charge up the power store unti the disp ay
stops f ashing.
[--] The watch is being charged, but is not yet ready for use again.
Continue to expose the watch to a source of ight.
[ ] No indicator: after 72 hours without exposure to ight, the mu ti-
frequency radio-contro ed so ar-powered watch has activated
s eep mode. Brief y expose the so ar watch face to a source of ight
or brief y press one of the buttons. The hands then move quick y
to the saved time. In order to obtain the current radio time, the
mu ti-frequency radio-contro ed so ar-powered watch begins an
automatic transmitter search at the end of the next fu minute.
[ ] No indicator; hands are in the 12 o’c ock position: The mu ti-fre-
quency radio-contro ed so ar-powered watch’s power store is
comp ete y discharged. P ease expose the watch to a source of
ight (see section 8.1).
4544
8.1 Restarting after a complete discharge of the power store
If the power store has been comp ete y discharged, you need to expose
your Junghans mu ti-frequency radio-contro ed so ar-powered watch
to ight in order to charge the store up. During the charging process,
two bars [--] f ash at 10-second interva s on the LC disp ay unti the
power store has sufficient power again. As soon as the charging pro-
cess has finished, a restart gets performed automatica y. The hands
move to the 12 o’c ock position and the watch starts the process of pik-
king up the time signa . The indicator on the LC disp ay goes out. A few
minutes after a signa is successfu y picked up, the watch automati-
ca y sets the correct time.
If no time signa has been picked up after 50 minutes, the process is
aborted in order to save power and it is subsequent y tried again every
6 hours. The hands remain in the 12 o’c ock position and two f ashing
barst [--] are shown every other second on the LC disp ay. In order to
neverthe ess get time information disp ayed, the watch can be manu-
a y set to the current time using quartz mode. The watch then carries
on running with the precision of a quartz watch.
In order to switch to quartz mode, press button T1. The watch is now in
quartz mode (see section 6.3).
