This manual applies to the signal meters:

MSK130/O BN 21710046 MSK130/OIA BN 21710054
The instructions used in this manual are important for operating the MSK 130 and must be
observed under all circumstances. The functions of the MSK 130 described in these oper-
ating instructions are not available for every device version due to the different hardware
versions of the device.
3 Intended Use
The MSK 130 is a portable multi-standard selective signal meter designed for DVB-S/S2,
DVB-C, DVB-T/T2, analogue TV and FM radio including the return path. In addition, the
MSK130/IA and MSK130/OIA are able to measure IPTV signals. The MSK 130/O and
MSK 130/OIA feature an additional optical measuring input, which can also be retrofitted
in the MSK 130.
The unit is equipped with a high-quality 9" TFT colour touch screen which enables ana-
logue and digital video display in MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 in the highest quality. The inte-
grated CI interface also makes it possible to display coded transmitters. Measurement
results can be saved on a USB stick.
The signal meter can be used for testing antenna and cable systems as well as profes-
sional head ends. The device is suitable for use in the lab and for monitoring headends
with remote control, as well as for acceptance measurements on antenna and distribution
systems.

5 Safety Instructions
CAUTION

►Keep and operate the unit out of reach of children.
WARNING
Danger to life due to electric shock!
►Ensure that the unit is operated only by trained specialist personnel.
►Pay attention to the safety instructions and important information about
the operation, installation location and connection of the unit supplied
with the signal meter.
►Read these instructions carefully before setting up the device.
CAUTION
Fire hazard due to a damaged connecting cable!
►Keep the connecting cable and the power supply unit out of reach of
domestic animals and rodents.
NOTICE
Risk of damage to property due to overheating!
►Do not cover the cooling openings on the device.
►Maintain a minimum clearance of 5 cm to all sides.
►Use the device only with the supplied power supply unit.
Tip Keep these instructions and the Safety Instructions for further reference, and
if the unit passes to another owner, pass them on to the new owner.

Important Information on the Battery

6 Important Information on the Battery
6.1 General Information
The provided battery is a lithium polymer battery of the highest quality. The battery life is
between 6 and 10 hours, depending on the following conditions:
●LNB power consumption: Single, dual or quad LNB
●Outdoor temperature: At temperatures below 10 °C the battery performance is
reduced by 20 %.
●Age of the battery: The capacity of the battery is annually reduced by 10 %.
Tip If the meter has been exposed to particularly low or high temperatures, allow
it to rest at room temperature before use.
6.2 Charging the Battery
►Always turn the MSK 130 off before connecting the battery charger.
►Do not leave the battery uncharged over a longer period of time.
►Always charge the battery for at least 7 hours, even if it is not completely discharged.
The battery status has a tolerance of ±20 % and depends on the battery charge condi-
tion and ageing process as well as on the outdoor temperature. The following icons in the
bottom left corner of the touch screen provide information about the battery charge condi-
tion:
6.3 Replacing the Battery
NOTICE
Risk of damage to property due to overheating!
►Do not damage or open the battery or subject it to any improper use.
►Use only rechargeable batteries which have been tested and approved
for the unit.
►Make sure that the rechargeable batteries are replaced only by the
Kathrein staff.

7 Transport and Storage
►Transport and store the device in its original case.
►Protect the device against dust, dirt, moisture and direct sunlight.
►Transport and store the device only in the permitted temperature range between -25
and 70°C. Make sure there is no water condensation build-up.
8 Unpacking the Device
►Before unpacking the unit, inspect the outer packaging for shipping damage.
►If the carton shows damage, inspect the unit in those areas.

APID (Audio Packet Identifier) Audio reception parameters in the MPEG data
stream
aBER (Bit Error Rate after Viterbi) Ratio of the transmitted bits to the erroneous
bits after Reed Solomon (Viterbi)
BCH (Bose Chaudhuri Hocquenghem) external error protection decoder
BER (Bit Error Rate) The bit error rate shows the quality of the DVB signals. It
displays the number of erroneous bits in relation to all the transmitted bits.
bBER/CBER (Bit Error Rate before Viterbi) Ratio of the received bits relative to bits that
have errors before Reed Solomon (Viterbi)
CBR (Constant Bit Rate) is used for MPTS measurements, cf. VBR
C/N (Carrier to Noise) Difference between the carrier signal and noise level in
dB; see also S/N
EVM (Error Vector Magnitude) Measures deviation of the transmitted symbols
to the ideal constellation, measured in dB.
FEC Forward Error Correction (Forward Error Correction), e.g. in case of the
code rate ¾, ¾ of the information is user data, ¼ of the data come from
the Viterbi correction.
Guard Interval Guard interval by extending the symbol through a gap. Due to this, good
reception is possible even in case of strong reflections.
LCN (Logical Channel Numbering) Logical channel sorting performed by the
provider
LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) A new error protection method applied in
DBV-S2 (Gallager codes). Inner error protection; code rates from ½ to 9/10
MER MER (Modulation Error Rate) is the ratio of the average signal power to
the average error power in dB. It is a kind of a C/N measurement which
gives information whether the receiver is able to demodulate the received
signal.
MPTS Multiple Program Transport Stream
NID (Network Identification) Network ID or channel identification number
between 0 and 8191
NIT (Network Information Table) contains, for example, information about all
available transponders, PIDs, downlink frequency, polarisation, next tran-
sponder for the scan; transmitted in the multiplexer transport stream

NsMargin (Noise Margin) Signal to Noise Ratio margin
OMI Optical modulation index
PER The Packet Error Ratio (Packet Error Ratio) displays the number of incor-
rectly received data packets relative to the total number of transmitted
packets (after Viterbi) .
QEF (Quasi Error Free) Bit error rate equals 2.00e-4
Noise level Sum of noise factor and thermal noise floors. Noise is created by physi-
cally caused molecular motion in electrical conductors.
RMS (Root Mean Square) Method of a square mean value determination
S/N (Signal to Noise) Difference between the wanted signal and the noise level
in dB; S/N≈C/N + 1,5; see also C/N
SPTS Single Program Transport Stream.
TSID (Transport Stream ID) Transponder/multiplex ID
VBR (Variable Bit Rate) is used for MPTS measurements, cf.CBR
VPID (Video Packet Identifier) Video reception parameters in the MPEG data
stream

The meter detects automatically when a screen is
connected and switches the display from the embed-
ded touch screen to the external monitor.

12.1 Turning the Device on and off
Turn on the signal meter.
►Press ON/OFF HOME .
➯The meter turns on and is ready for operation within seconds.

12.3 Resetting the Device

12.5 Resetting the Device to Factory Settings
The signal meter is delivered with a standard configuration (factory setting) for the system
and plan/measurement parameters. To reset the meter to factory settings:
1. Turn the meter off.
2. Turn the meter on and immediately after this, press VOL CONFIG for 10 seconds.
➯When you turn the meter on again, a red square appears in the bottom right corner.
The meter is restored to factory settings.

12.8 Changing a Setting Value Using
the Navigation Wheel
1. Press the navigation wheel to activate the line with setting param-
eters.
➯A setting parameter is active (marked in orange).
2. Rotate the navigation wheel to select the desired setting parameter.
3. Press the navigation wheel to go to a setting value.
➯A setting value is active (marked in orange).
4. Rotate the navigation wheel to change the setting value.
➯The setting value changes.
5. Press the navigation wheel to confirm the selection.
