control
This
control
permits
balancing
of
left
and right channels
when
an imbalance exists in
the
source sound,
or
to
correct
acoustic imbalance

room
conditions.
Move
it
to
the
left
from
the zero position
to
boost
the
left
channel; move it
to
the
right
of
the zero
posit
ion
to
raise
the
level
of
the
right
channel.

MIC
MIXING
and
MIC
input
Facilitates the mixing
of
microphone sound
with
any
program source selected
with
the SELECTOR
switch
.
Be
sure
that
the MIC
MIXING
control is set
to
SOU (fully
counterclockwise) before plugging a
mono
microphone into
the
MIC
jack. MIC mixing
is
activated by turning the MIC
MIXING control clockwise.

VOLUME
control
This
control
adjusts
left-
and
right-channel
volume
simultaneously. Set
it
for the desired listening level. The
scale
is
provided
with
dB
graduations to indicate attenuation
when
maximum
output
level corresponds
to
O dB.

PEAK
LEVEL indicators
The PEAK LEVEL indicators (LEDs)
show
the effective
power
being delivered
to
your speakers.
The indicators are calibrated for
an
8-ohm
load.
If
4-ohm
speakers are used. multiply the reading by 2; for
16-ohm
speakers, divide the reading by 2.

TUNING
switch

AUTO
setting -
With
the AUTO/
MANUAL
switch
set
to
AUTO (unlatched position), pushing
the
left end
of
this
switch
shifts the tuning frequency indicated on
the
display
downward
automatically until a broadcast
station is received; pushing the right end
of
this
switch
shifts the tuning frequency
upward
until a broadcast
station is received.
Automatic
scan
tuning
can be
stopped during the search operation by pushing the
same end
of
this
switch
again.
MANUAL
setting -
With
the AUTO/
MANUAL
switch
set
to
MANUAL
(latched position), pushing the left end
of
this
switch
momentarily decreases the frequency by
steps,
FM
: one step =
200
kHz;
AM
: one step =
10
kHz.
If
the
left
end
of
this
switch
is
kept
depressed,
after 2 ~ 3 seconds the frequency is decreased
rapidly. When
it
reaches the
lower
limit
of
the
frequency range,
it
is automatically
switched
to
the
upper
limit
and advances
at
the same speed. Pushing
the
right
end
of
this
switch
performs the opposite
operation.

FREQUENCY
DISPLAY
The digital display indicates
AM
and
FM
frequencies. allow-
ing you
to
tune correctly
to
the desired station using the
AUTO TUNING switch.

MEMORY
and
PRESET
switches
MEMORY
-This
switch
is used to store desired station
frequencies
together
with
the PRESET switches. With
the
MEMORY
switch
pushed, the MEMORY indicator
(in the frequency display) lights for
about
5 seconds.
While
the MEMORY indicator
is
on. the display
frequency is locked. and
it
can be stored by pushing
one
of
the PRESET switches. The
light
of
the
MEMORY
indicator goes
off
when
the
PRESET switch
is pushed.
PRESET
-Preset stations are stored by the PRESET
switches. Each
switch
can store one
AM
and one FM
station. (Selection
of
AM
and
FM
stations is
accomplished by use
of
the SELECTOR switch). The
desired preset station can be received independently
of
the AUTO
TUNING
switch
.

indicators
These indicators (LEDs)
show
the relative signal levels
of
incoming broadcasts. For best reception. the
FM
antenna
should be installed so
that
the highest possible number
of
indicators
light
.

MODE
switch
STEREO
(unlatched position) -the
FM
tuner section
switches
automatically between stereo and monaural
operation in accordance
with
the operation
of
the tun-
ed
station. This position is used
to
cancel interstation
noise
when
tuning. To receive very weak stations and
that
are
too
weak
to
overcome the muting threshold,
push in to disable
muting
.
MONO
(latched position) -This setting releases muting
and provides monaural operation regardless
of
the
transmitting
mode.

STEREO
indicator
With
the MODE
switch
set
to
STEREO, the indicator lights
if
the selected
FM
channel
is
transmitting
in
stereo and its
signal level is strong enough to overcome muting.

If
a very strong adjacent channel interfers
with
a desired
weak
channel. use this setting
to
eliminate the interference.

VENTILATION
HOLES
The case
top
is slotted
to
allow
ventilation. Never
block these holes
with
ornamental
cloths.
books
, or
other
objects. Make sure
that
metal objects such
as
coins.
hairpins. or needles
do
not
enter
the
unit
through
the
venti-
lation holes. The result could be a serious
malfunction
or a
possible shock hazard. Make sure
that
children
do
not
insert
foreign objects
into
the
ventilation
holes.
SERVICE
OR
MODIFICATIONS
Do
not
remove the
cabinet
or touch internal parts.
Refer all service
to
qualified service personnel. Unautho-
rized
modifications
can result
in
a dangerous shock hazard
and can
void
the
warranty
.
POWER
CORD
Always
insert
or
remove
the
power
plug
from
the AC
outlet
by grasping
the
plug body. Never pull
or
stretch
the
cord. Take care
that
the
cord is
not
subject
to
traffic
or
bent
sharply around furniture. Keep heavy objects
off
the
cord;
never route
it
under rugs, and avoid
the
use
of
extra exten-
sion cords.
Attent
ion
to
these precautions
will
avoid fire or
shock hazards.

SPEAKERS
If
only one set
of
speakers is
to
be connected. make
connections
to
the
terminals
marked SPEAKERS A. Con-
nect
the
speakers
to
the
OJ
and
[[]
terminals
in accordance
with
the
location
selected for each speaker. To ensure cor-
rect speaker phasing, observe
polarity
marks
;
connect
termi-
nals
marked
(
+)
on
the
receiver
to
similarly-marked
speaker
terminals. Do the same
for
receiver and speaker
terminals
marked
with
a
minus
sign. Reversal
of
speaker leads
will
result in loss
of
bass
tones
and
poor
stereo separation.
If
a second set
of
speakers is
to
be used make
con-
nections
at
the set
of
terminals. marked B.
It
is
recommended
that
the tips
of
the speaker leads be
soldered,
or
the strands
of
individual leads be
twisted
together
to
eliminate
any possibility
of
short-circuits
forming
in the speaker

TURNTABLES
Your stereo
turntable
has
two
audio cables
that
are
terminated
with
phono
plugs. Plug the
left
channel
plug
in
to
the

right
channel plug
into
the [[J PHONO
input
jacks.
If
the
turntable
has a
ground
wire.
connect
it
to
this
unit's GND
terminal
to
avoid
hum
.
TAPE DECKS
If
on
ly one tape
deck
is
to
be
connected
to
the
system
it
is recommended
that
it
be
connected
to
the jacks
marked
TAPE
A.
Tape deck
input
and
output
cables are
normally
termi-
nated
with
phono plugs.
Playback
Plug
the
left
and
right
output
cables
of
the tape
deck
into
the [I] and
[ID
TAPE A PLAY jacks.
Record
Plug the
left
and
right
input
cables
of
the tape deck
into the

REC
jacks.
DIN
Connector
If
your
tape
deck
is equipped
with
a DIN
connector
.
connect
it
to
the TAPE B
REC

connector

connecting cord. The DIN connection makes
both

a single cord. and the signal
must
be controlled
with
the TAPE B
switch
on the

panel.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
PRESETTING
STATIONS
A desired station can be preset for reception at any
time
by
pushing one
of
the PRESET switches. A
maximum
of
6
AM
and 6 FM stations can
be
preset
with
the
PRESET
switches. To preset stations, proceed
as
follows:
1. Set the AUTO/
MANUAL
switch
to
AUTO (unlatched
position).
2.
Push the FM
or
AM
switch, whichever is desired.
3. Select the desired frequency by pushing either end
of
the AUTO TUNING
switch
while
observing the display.
Make sure
that
the TUNED indicator lights up
at
the
frequency
of
the desired stations.
4. Push the MEMORY
switch
and the
MEMORY
indicator
will
light
for about 5 seconds. Push the desired
PRESET
switch
while
this indicator is on.
Notes:
1.
If
the PRESET switch has
not
been pushed
while
the
MEMORY indicator
is
on. push the
MEMORY
switch
again
and then push the PRESET switch.
2.
If
the
MEMORY
and PRESET
switches
are pushed
simultaneously. an unexpected presetting order
might
occur;
for example.
if
the PRESET
switch
contacts earlier than the
MEMORY switch.
it
releases the tuned station and flips the
tuning frequency
to
the
lower
limit
of
the frequency range.
To prevent this. push the MEMORY
switch
and then the
PRESET switch. in turn.
to
store the desired station.
3. When a new station is preset over
an
old one. the frequency
of
the old station is removed
from
memory.
AUTO
TUNING
OF
FM/AM
BROADCASTS
With
the AUTO/
MANUAL
switch
set
to
AUTO.
proceed
as
follows:
FM
Reception
1. Push the FM switch.
2. Push either end
of
the AUTO
TUNING
switch
to
tune in
the FM broadcasting station automatically.
3.
Adjust
volume and tone for your preference.
AM
Reception
1. Push the
AM
switch
.
2. Push either end
of
the AUTO TUNING
switch
to
tune in
the
AM
broadcasting station automatically.
3.
Adjust
volume and tone for your preference.
PRESET RECEPTION
1. Push the
AM
or FM switch. whichever
is
desired. The
AM
or FM indicator can
now
be seen
at
the
left
of
the
display.
2. Push the desired PRESET
switch
. The frequency
of
your preset station is indicated on
the
display.
3.
Adjust
volume and tone
for
your preference.
MANUAL
TUNING
OF
FM/AM
BROADCASTS
With
the AUTO/
MANUAL
switch
set
to
MANUAL.
proceed
as
follows
:
FM
Reception
1. Push the
FM
switch. (The FM indicator at
the
left
of
the
display lights up).
2. Push either end
of
the
AUTO TUNING
switch
until the
desired frequency is indicated on the display. The
TUN
ED
indicator lights
when
correct
tuning
is attained.
3.
Adjust
volume and tone for your preference.
AM
Reception
1.
Push the
AM
switch
. (The
AM
indicator at the
left
of
the display lights up).
2. Push either end
of
the AUTO TUNING
switch
to
tune in
the desired frequency. The TUNED indicator lights
when
correct tuning
is
attained.
3.
Adjust
volume
and tone for your preference.
MIC
MIXING
Microphone
use
only.
To prevent
howling
, be sure
that
the
MIC
MIXING
control
is
set
to
SOU (fully counterclockwise) before
plugging the microphone
into
the
MIC
jack.
1. Plug the microphone into the
MIC
jack.
2. Set
the
MIC
MIXING
control to the
MIC
position (fully
clockwise).
3. Use the microphone.
4.
Adjust
volume and tone
for
your preference.
MIC
and
SOURCE
Mixing
The
mic
input
signal can
be
easily mixed
with
the
source selected
with
the SELECTOR switch.
If
a single tape
deck is used in your system
it
should be connected to the
TAPE B jacks for mixed recording.
To
mix
mic
and source signals, proceed as follows:
1.
Select the desired source
with
the SELECTOR switch.
2. Use the microphone and adjust the
MIC
MIXING
control for your desired mixing ratio.
3.
Adjust
volume
and tone
for
your preference.
4. Connect
the
tape deck
to
the TAPE B jacks for mixed
recording.
5. Set the tape deck in the recording mode.
6.
Adjust
recording level
with
the recording level controls
of
the tape deck.
MIC
and
TAPE
Mixing
If
two
tape decks are incorporated
into
your system.
mixed recording can be done
as
follows
:
1.
Connect one
of
the tape decks
to
the
AUX
jacks and the

This receiver is equipped

the REMOTE connector
on the rear panel for connection

the AT-5OO Audio
Program Timer

permit
preset stations
to
be received.
With
the SELECTOR
switch
set to FM or
AM
in accordance
with
the
desired
station
. the AT-5OO can also be used to
record preset station broadcasts on tape
while
you are away
from
home by the connection
of
a tape deck. For details.

connected

the TAPE A

your

Monitoring
If
the tape deck is equipped
with
three
heads. you can
compare
the
sound
quality
of
the recording in progress
with
that
of
the source material by
switching
the
appropriate
TAPE
switch
between
SOURCE and PLAY
while
the
recording is in progress.
Recording (one
tape
deck)
1. Set one
of
the SELECTOR
switches
to
your
desired
program
source.
Set
the
both
TAPE
switches
to
SOURCE. To
monitor
the recording. set
the
appropriate
TAPE
switch
A or B
to
PLAY depending on the set
of
jacks
to
which
your tape deck is connected.
2. Set
up
your tape
deck
for
recording and
set
recording
levels
with
the
controls
of
your
tape
deck. The
volume
control and tone
controls
on the receiver
do
not
affect
the signal supplied
to
the tape deck
for
recording.
3.
Adjust
listening level
and
tone
at
the receiver
for
your
preference in
monitoring
the signal.
Recording
(two
tape decks)
1.
Set
one
of
the SELECTOR
switches
to
your
desired
program source.
2.
Set
both
TAPE
switches
to
SOURCE.
3. Recordings can
now
be made on
both
tape decks
simultaneously.
To
monitor
the recording. use the TAPE A
switch
as
follows: Set the TAPE A
switch
to
"PLAY"
to
monitor
the recording being made by the
tape
deck
connected
to the TAPE A jacks.
