Option EDC Upgrade
Introduction
Option EDC, External Digitizer Control allows the rear panel Ext IF Output (Ultra-wide bandwidth IF
Output, Option CRW) to be used with an oscilloscope and Keysight VSA measurement software.
This installation note provides instructions for licensing Option EDC on the N9041B. No instructions
are provided on the configuration and use of the oscilloscope and VSA software.
Requirements
— Instrument software revision must be A.21.00 or later
— Option CRW, Ultra-Wide Bandwidth IF Output, must be installed (licensed). All N9041B
instruments ship with the Ext IF Out connector on the rear panel, but Option CRW must be
licensed before the Ext IF Out connector will function.

Tools Required for Installation
— Personal computer with internet access and USB port
— USB storage device with > 2 GB free memory
1. The latest revision of the X-Series signal analyzer software may be
downloaded from:
http://www.keysight.com/find/Xseries_software
2. This option is licensed for one instrument model/serial number combination.
The license key will only install on the designated instrument.

Installation Procedure
Analyzer Information
1. Connect a power cord to the analyzer and turn on the analyzer.
2. After the analyzer has completed turning on, press System, Show System.
Make note of the following information from the Show System screen:

3. Check for the presence of the options listed below in the Show System screen. Put a check
mark after each option listed below that appears in the show System menu.

4. Refer to the data in step 2 above. Verify that the Product Number in step 2 is appropriate for
the upgrade being installed:
If the Product Number in step 2 is not appropriate for the Option EDC upgrade, do not proceed
with the installation.
5. Refer to the data in step 2 above. If the instrument software is earlier than A.21.00, you must
upgrade to version A.21.00 or later. Keysight recommends that you update to the latest
instrument software version to ensure that you have the latest defect fixes. To check the latest
instrument software version, visit the following website:

6. Refer to the data in step 3 above.
Verify that N9041B-CRW is checked (currently installed).
If N9041B-CRW is not installed, do not proceed with the installation of this kit. Option CRW, IF
Output, Ultra-Wide Bandwidth, is required to enable the rear panel Ext IF Out port.

Option EDC Upgrade
Installation Procedure over USB
1. Locate the Option Upgrade Entitlement Certificate (5964-5178) from the kit.
2. Redeem the Option Upgrade Entitlement Certificate by following the instructions on the
Certificate.
3. After redeeming your Option Upgrade Entitlement Certificate you will receive an email with an
attached License File.
4. Locate a USB storage device. Perform a virus scan on this device before use.
5. Save the License File to the root directory of the USB Storage Device.
6. Connect the USB Storage Device to the signal analyzer USB port. Windows will detect the new
hardware and may display the configuration menu shown in Figure 1. This menu may be
configured according to your preferences.

7. The signal analyzer will automatically consume the License File. (This may take a few minutes)
When the License File is consumed the Keysight License Manager will display a “Successful
License Installation” message as shown in Figure 2.

Alternate Installation Procedure
The License File can be manually installed over USB or LAN by placing the license file in the
following folder on the signal analyzer
C:\Program Files\Agilent\licensing
Verify the Installation
1. Cycle the power on the signal analyzer.
2. Press System, Show System to display a list of installed options.
3. Verify that the newly installed option, N9041B-EDC, External Digitizer Control, appears on the
list.
4. Verify that Option N9041B-CRW also appears. this assures Option CRW is installed since
Option EDC requires Option CRW.
