N5511A-K26 Phase Noise Measurement Interface
N5511A-K26 Phase Noise Measurement Interface (PNMI) is an accessory product designed to
facilitate performing additive noise measurements on two port devices. Refer to the PNTS User’s
Guide Chapter 7 for theory of residual measurements.
Additive noise is the noise added to a signal when the signal is processed by a two-port device.
Such devices include amplifiers, dividers, filters, mixers, multipliers, phase-locked loop synthesizers
or any other two-port electronic networks.
To measure this noise component, a stimulus signal is split to LO ports of a double-balanced mixer
phase detector, and to the DUT in the RF path of the phase detectors. Phase shifters are used to set
90 degrees offset (quadrature) so that the PM component added is passed and the PM component
of the stimulus is rejected.
Figure 1 shows the diagram for a dual-channel additive noise measurement

The PNMI contains all the necessary accessories to perform such measurements. The purple box
outline in Figure 2 captures the accessories contained in the PNMI. These include:

Dual Channel
This example contains information about measuring the residual noise of two-port devices. It
demonstrates a residual phase noise measurement for an RF Amplifier. Refer to the PNTS User’s
Guide Chapter 7 for more information about residual phase noise measurements.
Equipment Needed
— N5511A-K26 Phase Noise Measurement Interface
— DUT (this measurement features CMMIC CMD274P)
— 8 SMA cables (to match Figure 4 and Figure 5)
— Signal Analyzer (this is only used for setting up the calibration tone)
— Stimulus source
—Calibrationsource
Connections
Wire the system using the diagram (Figure 5) and the PNMI (Figure 4) for the front view of the PNMI
connections.
To prevent damage to the test system’s hardware components, verify that the input signal is
within the test system’s power limits. Refer to the N5511A Data Sheet online.
For optimal measurement performance, both channel paths need to be matched in delay. This
means that LO cable lengths need to match each other as well as the RF port cables.

Configuring Equipment
The equipment configuration process is identical to when configuring a residual measurement not
using the PNMI as presented in the N5511A User’s Guide.
Setup Stimulus PSG
Frequency: 7.2 GHz
Amplitude: 14 dBm
Set SSB Cal Tone
Refer to Figure 6. Set the cal source to be at a 1 kHz offset from the stimulus carrier at the output of
the coupler and -40 dB relative to the carrier level. A signal analyzer should be used to verify the cal
tone. The easiest location to measure with the analyzer is at the RF path to channel 2.

Measurement Procedure
Start the N5510A application.
Measurement Type and Range
At the top of the main application window, click Define and select Measurement from the
drop-down menu.
Define -->Measurement
The following window will appear:

Choose the Type and Range tab in the Define Measurement window.
1. Choose Measurement Type.
Measurement Type: Residual Phase Noise (without using phase locked loop)
2. Choose Channel Setup.
Channel Setup: Dual
3. Set X-Corr Number.
FFT Analyzer Minimum Number of Cross-Correlations: 10
4. Set Start and Stop Offsets.
Start Offset: 100 Hz
Stop Offset: 10 MHz

Source Configuration
Next, we will configure the settings for the DUT and the reference source (REF).
Choose the Source tab in the Define Measurement window.

Start a New Measurement
When the Do you want to perform a New Calibration and Measurement? prompt appears, click
Yes.
When the Connect Diagram dialog box appears, click on the hardware down arrow and select your
hardware configuration from the pull-down list. Click Continue.
To prevent damage to the test system’s hardware components, verify that the input signal is
within the test system’s power limits. Refer to the N5511A Data Sheet online.
