The license set forth in the EULA
represents the exclusive authority
by which the U.S. government

disclose the Software. The EULA
and the license set forth therein,

software documentation that is
not customarily provided to the
public; or (2) Relinquish to, or
otherwise provide, the
government rights in excess of
these rights customarily provided

1 Troubleshooting
Before Troubleshooting
These troubleshooting instructions are for use by qualified personnel. To avoid electrical shock,
do not perform any troubleshooting unless qualified.
The opening of covers or removal of parts is likely to expose dangerous voltages. Disconnect the
instrument from all voltage sources before it is opened.
The following techniques related to ESD and static-safe workstations should not be used when
working on circuitry with a voltage potential greater than 500 volts.
Keep fingers and all other objects away from the fans when the signal generator is plugged in.
For the instrument to meet performance specifications and for accurate self-test results, allow a
warm up period of 45 minutes within an operational temperature range of 0 to 55 °C. For more
information, refer to the X-Series signal generator Data Sheets.
When a procedure instructs you to preset the signal generator, press the Preset hardkey, not
the User Preset hardkey.

ESD Information
Protection from Electrostatic Discharge
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage or destroy electronic components.
All work on electronic assemblies should be performed at a static-safe
workstation using two types of static-safe workstation protection:
— conductive table-mat and wrist-strap combination
— conductive floor-mat and heel-strap combination
Both types, when used together, provide a significant level of ESD protection.
Of the two, only the table-mat and wrist-strap combination provides adequate
ESD protection when used alone. To ensure user safety, the static-safe
accessories must provide at least 1 M Ω of isolation from ground.
Handling of Electronic Components and ESD
The possibility of unseen damage caused by ESD is present whenever
components are transported, stored, or used. The risk of ESD damage can be
greatly reduced by close attention to how all components are handled.
— Keep static-generating materials at least one meter away from all
components.
— Store or transport components in static-shielding containers.
Always handle printed circuit board assemblies by the edges. This will reduce the possibility of
ESD damage to components and prevent contamination of exposed plating.

Contacting Keysight Technologies
Before contacting Keysight, read the warranty information that is shipped with
your signal generator. If your signal generator is covered under a maintenance
agreement, be familiar with its terms.
Assistance with test and measurements needs, and information on finding a
local Keysight office is available on the Web at:
http://www.Keysight.com/find/assist.
If you do not have access to the internet, contact your local field engineer.
Be prepared to provide the following information:
— a complete description of the failure
— if the signal generator was dead on arrival (DOA) or if it functioned prior to
failure
— the model number, all options, and the serial number of the signal
generator
— the firmware revision date
— if the self tests have been run
In any correspondence or telephone conversation, refer to the signal generator by its model
number and full serial number. With this information the Keysight representative can determine
whether your signal generator is still within its warranty period.

Troubleshooting
Returning a Signal Generator for Service
Use the information in this section if you need to return the signal generator to
Keysight Technologies.
Packaging the Signal Generator
1. Use the original packaging materials or a strong shipping container that is
made of double-walled, corrugated cardboard with 159 kg (350 lb.)
bursting strength. The carton must be both large enough and strong
enough to accommodate the signal generator and allow at least 3 to 4
inches on all sides of the signal generator for packing material.
2. Surround the signal generator with at least 3 to 4 inches of packing
material, or enough to prevent the instrument from moving in the carton. If
packing foam is not available, the best alternative is SD-240 Air Cap™
from Sealed Air Corporation (Hayward, CA 94545). Air Cap looks like a pink
plastic sheet covered with 1-1/4 inch air-filled bubbles. Use the Air Cap to
reduce static electricity. Wrap the signal generator several times in the
material to protect the signal generator and to prevent it from moving in
the carton.
3. Seal the shipping container securely with strong, nylon adhesive tape.
4. Mark the shipping container “FRAGILE, HANDLE WITH CARE” to ensure
careful handling.
5. Retain copies of all shipping papers.
Signal generator damage can result from using packaging materials other than those specified.
Never use styrene pellets, of any shape, as packaging material. They do not adequately cushion
the signal generator or prevent it from shifting in the carton. Styrene pellets can cause equipment
damage by generating static electricity and lodging in the signal generator fan.

Troubleshooting
A1 Front Panel
The signal generator accepts inputs through the front panel hardkeys and the
display softkeys, and provides outputs on the front panel display and through
the RF output connector. Depending on the model, features, and options, the
front panel may have modulation input/output BNC connectors installed but
not operational (if the option associated with that connector is not installed).
When line voltage is present and the unit in standby mode, the amber LED
located at the left of the power switch lights. When the signal generator is in
power-on mode, the green LED at the left of the power switch lights.
Hardkeys/Softkeys
Some front panel keys are referred to as hardkeys and are dedicated to specific
functions. Hardkeys and the Rotary Pulse Generator (RPG) knob are used to
select the most commonly used features and to control the display contrast
and intensity. The front panel keys along the side of the LCD display are
referred to as softkeys and are used to select functions; these functions are
displayed to the left of each softkey. When a softkey is pressed, its displayed
functionality is executed. Some softkeys have multiple lower- level menus that
are displayed when the softkey is pressed. The front panel hardkeys and
softkeys use a row and column configuration. Pressing a key makes a
connection between a row and a column; the keypad controller (located on the
A1A1 Front Panel Interface assembly) interprets the pressing of each of the
front panel keys and performs the appropriate action.
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
The LCD provides a visual real- time updated interface between the signal
generator's settings, condition and the user. The LCD consists of a seven inch
Thin Film Transistor (TFT) RGB liquid crystal display panel. The display is a high
resolution wide viewing angle XGA panel that incorporates a white Light
Emitting Diode (LED) back- light system, polarized glare compensation, Thin-
Film Transistor (TFT) timing controller, source and gate drivers. Internal DC-
to- DC boost circuits generate gate and source driver voltages. The display is
operated with a 3.3 VDC source.

A2 Power Supply
Voltages
The main power supply is a switching supply designed with an automatic line-
voltage and frequency selection. The supply has a maximum total output
power draw of 450 watts. The supply converts line voltage (120 Vac or
240 Vac) to regulated DC voltages. All A2 Power Supply outputs, except for the
+5VSB (standby- supply), are over- current protected and will not be damaged
if a continuous short circuit occurs. Also there is over-voltage protection; it will
shut down if exceeds required voltage.
Power Supply Interface Assembly is a post regulation switched mode power
supply which converts +12VDC @ 50A to the following output voltages,
+32VA, +15VA, +12V, +9VA, +5VA,+5V_REF_OCXO_SW, +5V_STBY_SW,
+5VREF Voltage, +2.5VD Voltage, +1.2VD Voltage, -7VA, -15VA and Fan
Power (vary from 5.9VDC to 14VDC). There is a FPGA providing sync signals
and ABUS for these suppliers.
Power Supply Thermal Sensors and Fans
Two thermal sensors prevent the signal generator from overheating. One
sensor is internal to the A2 Power Supply; the other sensor is in A12 DAC
Board.
A3 Fan Module
There are four fans in the instrument. They are variable speed fans that
increase and decrease in speed to regulate the instrument's internal
temperature. For reliability, it is important to operate the instrument with the
covers installed to ensure proper airflow and cooling.
A4 Mother Board
The Mother Board routes power supplies from the A2 power supply and
provides communication data lines to the A1 front panel, A10 Midplane, and A5
Infrastructure boards.
The power supply has an internal line fuse that cannot be replaced. If the fuse opens, the power
supply must be replaced.

A5 Infrastructure Board
The Infrastructure Board provides the following functions:
— Connection between the CPU Carrier Board and Mother Board
— Local power supplies from +12VDC for Infrastructure Board and CPU Carrier
Board
— CPU Power OK signal to CPU for booting process
— PCI Express distribution from CPU host to Rear Panel, DAC Board, RF Deck
Interface and Reference Board endpoints
— PCI Express clock buffering
— CPU Reset and generation of CPU EREADY from downstream FPGAs
—JTAGbuffering
— ABUS monitoring of power supplies and local temperature
— FPGA provides a PCIe endpoint, SPI control of the PS Interface FPGA, clock
dividers for the local power supplies, fan monitoring and ABUS mux and
ADC control
—FanPowerdistribution
— Power Supplies: The input power supplies to the Infrastructure Board are
+12VD and +5V_STBY. The supplies generated by the Infrastructure Board
are: +3.3V_STBY, +5.1VD, +3.3VD, +2.5VD, and 1.0VD
A6 CPU Carrier
The A6 CPU Carrier provides power supply to A7 CPU and routes all the LAN,
GPIB, USB 2.0, PCIe, or Auxiliary I/O modules (Options CC1 or CC2 I/O
interface) connectors to the rear panel.
A7 CPU
The A7 CPU is a hybrid Type- 1/Type-10 COM (Computer- on-Module)
nanoETX Express assembly. It incorporates the Win CE Compact Framework
processor solution and is compatible with the PICMG® defined COM Express ™
standard and follows the Pin- out Type 1 along with providing common
instrument I/O interfaces. The A7 CPU controls all activities in the signal
generator. It translates information entered from the front panel keys, LAN,
GPIB, USB 2.0, PCIe or Auxiliary I/O modules (Options CC1 or CC2 I/O
interface) into machine level instructions and communicates these instructions
on the internal buses. The A7 CPU also monitors critical circuits for unleveled
and unlocked conditions, and reports these problems on the LCD Display.
