2. SMOKE ALARM BEST PRACTISE
A smoke alarm paern is 3 long beeps, repeated every 1.5 seconds.
At all mes and before installing your smoke alarm you must;
• Have an escape plan with alternate exits
• Train your family in this escape plan and pracse it regularly
• Ensure your family know what the alarm sounds like
If the alarm sounds, check for res rst of all, and if one is discovered then;
• DO Alert small children
• DO Exit the home according to your escape plan
• DO Crawl if the smoke is dense, using a damp cloth to breathe through
• DO Call the re brigade from a neighbour’s home
• DO Ensure that everyone is awake, and assistance is given to those who require it
• DON’T stop to dress or retrieve valuables
• DON’T open doors that are warm, or through which smoke is seeping
NOTE – Situaons where a smoke alarm might not be effecve;
• Smoking in bed
• Leaving children unaended
• Cleaning with flammable liquids resulng in explosive vapour.

3. IMPORTANT SMOKE ALARM INFORMATION
• Before temporarily silencing the alarm with the Hush buon, idenfy the source of the smoke.
• Smoke alarms need to be tested regularly
• Smoke alarms cannot provide an alarm if smoke cannot reach them
• Fires in chimneys, walls, roofs, different levels or behind closed doors might not be detected
• For the physically or mentally impaired, or very young, escape may be difficult and so
alternave escape strategies should be adopted
• The smoke alarm may not wake heavy sleepers or those impaired by the use of drugs or
alcohol. In this case an alarm should be ed in each sleeping area
• Smoke alarms can save lives, but they are not an alternave for an adequate insurance policy
to protect lives and property
Leading authories recommend that both ionisaon and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to
help insure maximum detecon of the various types of fires that can occur within the home.
Ionisaon sensing alarms may detect invisible fire parcles (associated with fast aming fires)
sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible fire parcles
(associated with slow smoldering fires) sooner than ionisaon alarms.

A CO alarm paern is 4 quick beeps, repeated every 5 seconds.
WARNING: Carbon monoxide alarm acvaon indicates the presence of CO at high
concentraons which can kill you. NOTE: If you recognise any of the symptoms on
page 8 consult your Doctor immediately.
NOTE: Young children, elderly and pets are more suscepble to the dangers of CO.
NOTE: This alarm is designed to detect CO gas. It is not designed to detect other gases
such as natural gas.
NOTE: This alarm is intended for use in ordinary family homes. It is not designed to
measure compliance with occupaonal safety and the HSE.
NOTE: Individuals with certain specific medical condions may need an alarm that
operates below 30ppm. If this applies consult your Doctor.
IMPORTANT: Ensure that all family members are familiar with the symptoms of CO
poisoning and how your alarm works.

5. WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CO ALARM SOUNDS
Carbon Monoxide Alarm Procedure
WARNING! When this alarm sounds it indicates the presence of CO which can kill you. Based on
recommendaons from EN 50292, follow these steps if alarm sounds (4 loud audible pulses followed
by a pausefor 5 seconds):
1) Keep calm and open all doors and windows. Turn off all fuel-burning appliances if possible.
Note: it is possible that outdoor condions could in uence domesc CO alarms (bad traffic
polluon in cold weather, for example). In these circumstances, the level of indoor CO might
actually increase when doors and windows are opened.
2) If the alarm connues to sound, even aer being reset (where appropriate), then evacuate the
premises, alerng other occupants to the risk. Leave doors and windows open. Do not re-enter
the premises.
3) Get medical help for anyone suffering the effects of CO poisoning, and advise that CO inhalaon
is suspected.
4) Call Gas Emergency Services: 0800 111 999, or your local Gas Safe Registered Engineer:
Engineer.
Never restart the source of a CO problem unl it has been corrected. Never ignore the sound of the
alarm! Pressing the test/reset buon will silence the alarm. If the CO condion that caused the alert
connues, the alarm will reacvate. If the unit alarms again within six minutes, it is sensing high
levels of CO which can quickly become a dangerous situaon.

6. WHAT IS CARBON MONOXIDE?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly poisonous gas with no taste, colour or smell.
Potenal Sources o CO
•Wood-burning stoves
•Gas boilers and fires
•Gas Hobs
•Oil and coal burning appliances
•Portable gas heaters
•Blocked flues and chimneys
•Fumes rom integral garages
•Barbecues
•High concentraons o tobacco smoke
This CO alarm is not a substute for the correct
maintenance of your appliances.
Carbon monoxide can be produced from poorly burning
appliances or from blocked flues and chimneys.
If your alarm has sounded and you have venlated the
room the CO may have dispersed before help arrives. It is
crucial that the source of CO is determined and
appropriate maintenance carried out.
Carbon monoxide is a cumulave poison. This alarm is me-weighted – the higher the level of CO,
the sooner it will alarm.
NOTE: The apparatus may respond to brief exhaust gas emissions, for example during the inial
start-up of an appliance. Also, hydrogen acts as an interferent and can arise from some baery
charging acvies and the curing of concrete or cement under certain circumstances. Volale
Organic Compounds (VOCs), e.g. alcohols, which may eventually acvate the alarm, can be
generated from use of damp-proofing materials or other coangs containing alkylalkoxysilanes.
