Handling the Polyethylene Tube
The polyethylene irrigaon tube is a durable product that will operate reliably for many years
if handled properly and given a reasonable amount of care.
Medium Density Polyethylene is a semi-rigid product that retains its shape when it is not pres-
surized but can also be wound on a drum or spool without damage. This characterisc makes
it feasible to pump uid through it while it is rolled up on a reel.
A few simple precauons need to be observed to prevent damaging the tube when operang
your Water-Reel.
1. When starng a new Water-Reel for the rst me, you must pull the tube all the way
out in order to correctly ghten the new tube on the spool. It is also important to fol-
low the ming Instrucons on Pages 23-24 of this manual.
2. Never transport the Water-Reel with the An Return Pawl in the up posion! The tub-
ing will become loose and tangled. Do not aempt to operate your Water-Reel if there
are any coils of tube that are loose or misplaced. If loose coils of tube are noced, they
must be ghtened by rotang the spool by hand. If this is not possible, pull all of the tube
out before aempng to rewind the tube.
3. Never try to move or relocate the machine if the tube is not fully rewound onto the ma-
chine.
4. Never pull the tube o the machine other than by pulling on the sprinkler cart (straight
out from the machine).
5. Never run over the tube with any kind of vehicle and avoid pinching or pulling the tube
around objects. Never bend the tube sharper than 25 mes the inner diameter of the
tube (See page 14).
6. If the tube is frequently pulled out only a poron of its complete length the tube remain-
ing on the drum will become loose. Occasionally it will be necessary to pull all the tube o
the drum to ghten the remaining coils.
Be careful when operang other equipment near the tube. Make sure the tube doesn’t get
gouged or punctured.
REMEMBER, polyethylene tube is semi-rigid and subject to being kinked. Those foregoing
precauons will reduce the possibility of kinking or damaging your tube. Throughout the
irrigaon industry the words ‘tube’ and ‘hose’ are used interchangeably in connecon with
hard hose traveling machines.

Water-Reel Start-Up & Operaon
The success of the Water-Reel irrigaon system depends a great deal on the operator's understand-
ing of the proper pull out and start up procedure. Do not aempt to operate this Water-Reel unl
you read and understand the preceding secon tled "Handling the Polyethylene Tube"!
Decide on the proper nozzle size to be used for the irrigaon run which thus will also determine the
irrigaon lane spacing that will be needed (see pages 21-22 for sprinkler performance).
Set the desired arc to be used on the sprinkler gun.
NOTE: Arc sengs where the sprinkler never distributes water forward of the gun cart (towards
pull), could create undesired tracking results. This is caused by the connuous thrust of the sprinkler,
which pushes the tube towards the Water-Reel. It is recommended that the arc be set to create
some tension on the tube greater than 180°).
Note: Your Kifco Water-Reel is equipped to irrigate on a gradual arc if necessary. Arced irrigaon can
only be performed aer the rst 25% of the tube is pulled out straight from the machine and then the
gradual arc cannot exceed 90 degrees over the remaining 75%. Depending on the soil or vegetaon the
gun cart may or may not follow the arc back to the machine. Higher fricon (furrows, tall grass) will
greatly assist with the gun cart tracking the arc.
Failure to observe this limitaon can also place an excessive side load on the Level Wind mechanism
which could result in equipment failure and/or tube damage.

Water-Reel Start-Up & Operaon
The following steps are important.
1. Pull the Water-Reel perpendicular to the path to be irrigated. Remove the Cradle Locking Pin and slowly ro-
tate the reel towards the irrigaon path. Re-Insert the Cradle Locking Pin into the slot located on the front of
the machine.

2. Remove the pins holding the Stabilizer Legs to the machine. Rotate the Stabilizer Legs to their down posion
and re-insert both pins to secure them.
Begin cranking the Jack Handle on the Stabilizer Legs to lower them to the ground. Lower both Stabilizer Legs
rmly into the ground. Apply an equal amount of force to both sides of the machine, DO NOT apply more force
to one side verses the other.DO NOT FORCE the Stabilizer Legs into the ground to the point where it begins to
raise the machines re o the ground!
Never
aempt to operate the Water-Reel with only one leg down.

4. Check spool brake for proper tension. There should be noceable resistance to unrolling. The purpose of
the spool brake is to prevent coasng of the spool during tube pull out.
Coasting of the spool is the
most frequent cause of malfunction!
This problem is most common when the Water-Reel is fre-
quently used in short runs and the enre tube is seldom pulled all the way out. When the spool coasts, it will
appear that the Level Wind mechanism is out of me with the incoming tube,
make no attempt to re-
time the machine until it is determined that the tube is not loose.
If the tube does be-
come loose the only way to correct the problem is to pull the tube all the way out and allow the machine to
operate a full-length run. See the "adjustments" secon of this manual for adjusng the spool brake.
3. Aach the water supply line to the machine to conrm that all lines reach and the Water-Reel is set in the
proper place.
Do turn on the water.
5. Aach the water supply line to the machine to conrm that all lines reach and the Water-Reel is set in the
proper place.
Do turn on the water.

NOTE:
In some circumstances, there will be pressure on
both the Clutch Disengage Knob and the An Re-
turn Pawl causing diculty with disengaging the
drive system. To relieve pressure, turn the Hand
Wheel clockwise slightly.
6 . Disengage the drive system by pulling out the Clutch Disengage Knob, twisng 90° and leng the split pin
rest in the groove in the clutch housing.
Next, disengage the An Return Pawl by liing the handle of the pawl and rotang the
Pawl Stop Plate under the handle. Ensure the Pawl Stop Plate is fully under the An
Return Pawl handle.
IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL THIS STEP BE DONE PROPERLY! Failure to do so WILL re-
sult in SEVERE DAMAGE to the machine

7. Connect to the Tow Chain on the Gun Cart. SLOWLY and STEADILY begin pulling (3 MPH) the Gun
Cart and the Hose down the path to be irrigated. Avoid sudden stops or anything that will make the spool
more likely to coast.
It is allowable for the tube not to be pulled out in a straight line, however, it is important that
the first 25%
of the tube be pulled straight away from the machine.
Failure to observe this limitaon
places excessive side load on the level wind mechanism and may result in equipment failure or tube damage.
Note:
When the tube is pulled out to follow a contour or to avoid an obstacle, the extent that it is pulled in a
curve should be very gradual. Under no circumstances should the tube curve more than 90 degrees in
its enre length. How well the tube will follow its laid out path back to the machine will depend mostly
on the surface of the ground. For example, if there are contours or furrows to follow, the tube may
track back very well. If the soil or vegetaon is slick and no rows or furrows exist, the tube may cut
across the laid out path and be recoiled back on the machine in the shortest distance (a straight line).

8. It is considerably easier to have an assistant back at the machine to warn the driver that the maximum length
of hose has been reached.
If operang alone; the driver will be able to observe the white markings on the spool core beginning to show.
This indicates to the driver that the maximum length of hose on the machine is about to be reached.
It is advised to leave one or two hose coil wraps on the spool when Gun Cart pull-out is complete. Tighten the
remaining tube on the spool by rotang spool and packing coils together.
Disconnect the Tow Chain and store back onto the Gun Cart.
9. Determine if the automac water shut-o is to be used and set the valve accordingly.
*The Actuator
Valve
is a stem valve located on the Gun Cart of the Water Reel. This must not be used as an ON/OFF valve
for any purpose other than to automacally shut-o the sprinkler at the compleon of an irrigaon run.
Note
: Actuator valve
must
be reset before each irrigaon run.
The Sprinkler Flow Selector Valve will only operate automacally if the Actuator Valve has been reset.
To ready Gun Cart for irrigaon run: pull the Bumper back towards the hose. Press the Actuator Valve knob
towards the valve body.

10. Re-engage the Clutch Disengage Knob by turning it back 90° leng the split pin rest in the deeper groove
of the clutch housing. NOTE: In some instances the Clutch Disengage Knob will not fully set back into the
groove. This is due to the pin resng on the bar on the Clutch Dog located behind the sprocket. Once the tur-
bine is engaged, the sprocket will begin turning and the Clutch Disengage Knob will drop into its full oper-
ang posion.
Rotate the Pawl Stop Plate out from underneath the An Return Pawl handle. The An Return Pawl will

Important
When using the automac water shuto feature, be sure the water can be shut o au-
tomacally without damaging the water supply or the Water-Reel! Stopping the ow of
water can damage a pump or water lines and excessive pressure can be created. A qual-
ied person should conrm if you could safely ulize the automac water shut-o.
Water-Reel Start-Up & Operaon
12. Observe water pressure, travel speed, and sprinkler performance to conrm desired performance. See per-
formance guide supplied with the machine.

IMPORTANT: If the standard irrigaon run does not require the use of 100% of the tube on the Wa-
ter-Reel; it will be necessary to occasionally pull the enre length of tube o of the Water-Reel and
retract the tube under pressure to ensure the concentric shape of the tube. During short runs of
the Water-Reel, the remaining tube on the spool will tend to gradually loosen. Over me, gaps in
the tube on the spool will create Level Wind to tube mis-alignment causing the machine to become
out of me or the possibility of the tube mis-wrapping causing damage to the Water-Reel and the
tube. This can be corrected by making a full run (pull 100% of the tube out) occasionally.
