This Down Draft Vent Hood job aid provides the In- Home Service Professional with information on wiring
diagrams and the theory of how the downdraft vent hood operates.
For specific information on the model being serviced, refer to the literature supplied with the vent hood.
Always use the Wiring Diagram supplied with the product when servicing the unit.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The goal of this Job Aid is to provide information that will enable the In-Home Service Professional to
properly diagnose malfunctions of the downdraft vent hood. A DownDraft Vent Hood Service video is
available and accessable in the TABLE OF CONTENTS. The service video is also available on the Service
Matters® site
The objective of this Job Aid is to:
• Provide the In-Home Service Professional with wiring diagrams and strip circuit information
that will make servicing the downdraft vent hood easier.

This Illustraon shows the general locaon of all operaonal components on the downdra vent hood.
The components are numbered as shown on the product wiring diagram (next page).
The wiring diagram (shown on the next page) is available on the unit and also printed in the Installaon
Instrucons with the product. This isn’t a tradional Whirlpool diagram and can be a lile dicult
understanding whats going on as switches open and close.

Shown on the Product Wiring Diagram is the component parts layout chart and within the wiring
diagram the electrical components are numbered per the component chart. You can also see the
adjustable blower speed switch tesng informaon and a motor specicaon chart. We can come
back to this diagram later if necessary, but let’s look at something a lile more helpful.

This is a complete picture of the wiring diagram on the previous page but in a dierent format. This
circuit shows the vent sing idle in the down posion just like the product wiring diagram.
We numbered the electrical components on the diagram per the component chart on the product
wiring diagram.
We did a few other things to provide some necessary informaon that you couldn’t pick up from the
product wiring diagram.
One important thing we needed to show is that the Plenum UP Limit switch and the exhaust Blower
Motor switch are mechanically connected as illustrated by the black line. We’ll show you why this is
important a lile later.

The other thing that is important is what happens when the Pushbuon is pressed. A complete 120
VAC circuit is created through the two lter switches, the pushbuon (as it is being held down by the
operator), and the motor to the neutral side of the line.
As you noce with this circuit, unl the Plenum DOWN Limit switch is closed the only power to the
motor is through the pushbuon switch. Once that pushbuon is released, the motor stops. So why is
it so important to hold the pushbuon switch down for 2-3 seconds?
As the motor starts, it begins to turn a cam located on the motor sha. As this cam turns it takes about
2-3 seconds to contact the Plenum Down limit switch which in turn closes the switch contacts and sets
up a complete circuit through the two lter switches and the two plenum limit switches. Now when the
pushbuon is released an alternate circuit through the motor is set up and the plenum starts to rise.
Here is the operang circuit once the pushbuon is released. At this point the plenum motor is
powered through the FILTER SWITCHES and the PLENUM LIMIT SWITCHES and connues to raise the
plenum.
As soon as the plenum reaches its upper limit the Plenum UP Limit switch opens and disconnects
power to the plenum motor circuit.

As soon as the plenum rises to it fully open posion, the Plenum UP Limit switch will change posion
and open the circuit to the motor. The only me we need the exhaust blower motor to run is when the
plenum is fully open.
So as the “Up Plenum limit switch” opens the circuit stops the plenum drive motor, the exhaust
blower motor switch closes and starts to pull smoke and odors from the cooktop. (This is where the
mechanically connected switches operate together).
The Exhaust Blower Motor Switch is mounted on top of the Up plenum limit switch and they are both
acvated at the exact same me (plenum switch opens and exhaust motor switches closes). Once
the cycle is complete, the user again presses the pushbuon to start too complete a circuit through
the plenum drive motor, which begins to turn and close the UP LIMIT switch and eventually close the
plenum.
As the plenum UP limit switch is acvated to close and complete a circuit to the motor, the exhaust
blower motor switch opens and stops the exhaust motor circuit.
