COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT AQUARIUMS
Q: Is the Acrylic used in Aquarius Aquariums as good as glass?
A: Yes, the acrylic used in our tanks is as safe for your fish as glass aquariums.
Acrylic aquariums offer seamless construction and are impact-resistant, eliminat-
ing the risks associated with glass aquariums that have glued seams. However,
always test all tanks for any damage that may have occurred during transportation.
Fill the tank with water and let it stand for an hour before beginning the set up pro-
cedures.
Q: Why are there bubbles on top of my tank?
A: There can be a number of reasons for bubbles. The tap water conditioner can
cause bubbles and sometimes give the appearance of soapy water. Another reason
could be the tank is going through the new tank setup cycle. An aquarium usually
takes a month or so to completely cycle, during this time when feeding your fish
check that the food for your fish isn't sitting on top of the bubbles where the fish
can't get to it. Once your tank has cycled the bubbling or foaming should stop. An-
other common cause for foaming is the decorative gravel has not been rinsed as
thoroughly as necessary to clean it completely.
Q: My water gets very cloudy in just a few days. Why?
A: This is another common condition in new aquariums as they cycle through.
Leave the tank alone, keeping everything in operation. The cloudiness should dis-
appear in a few days and is not harmful to your fish, but if you prefer there are
chemicals available to speed up the clearing process. Consult with a reliable pet or
aquarium dealer for recommendations.
Q: How often should I clean my aquarium?
A: DO NOT LIFT OR CARRY THE TANK TO THE SINK, IT IS RECOM-
MENDED TO USE A GRAVEL VACUUM WHEN REMOVING WATER.
DAMAGE TO YOUR TANK MAY OCCUR IF YOU TRY TO MOVE IT.
Maintenance is a necessary part of a good aquarium keeping. Routine water chang-
es while removing debris from gravel helps maintain a natural balance in the
aquarium environment. Use of a gravel vacuum to siphon debris and uneaten food
from the bottom of the tank is recommended. The frequency of your water chang-
es depends on the number and kinds of fish in your tank and the amount of daily
feedings. Usually every 3 to 4 weeks is sufficient. Replace 25% of the water with
fresh tap water that has been treating with a tap water conditioner. You should
never empty the tank and start over. By draining your tank completely, beneficial
bacteria that convert harmful toxic chemicals such as ammonia will be wiped out.
If you have a problem with your aquarium, consult a reliable pet or aquarium deal-
er to test your water and help you determine the best remedy.
Q: How long after setting up the aquarium should I wait before adding fish?
A: If you have thoroughly rinsed all non-electrical parts of your aquarium, as well
as your gravel and ornaments, fill your tank with water and aerate for 24 to 48
hours to allow the aquarium to acclimate to room temperature. By allowing the
water to stabilize, you reduce the stress on the new fish. In fact, most pet and
aquarium specialty dealers will test your water as a service to their customers to
ensure a balanced tank. It is our strongest recommendation that you follow their
advice; their expertise will provide you with valuable information and assistance
along the way.
Additionally, there are easy-to-understand books available at most pet stores that
will answer your questions. You will be anxious to introduce fish to your new
aquarium, but first be sure that the environment you have created is a healthy one
for them.
