TheMBR144isaMaritimeBroadbandRadio(MBR).ItisapartoftheMaritime
BroadbandRadio(MBR)productfamilyofreal-timesteerablephasedarraydigitalradio
units.Itisdevelopedforuseinmaritimeapplicationswherereliablecommunication
anddatatransferarecrucialforefcientandsafeoperations.TheMBR144isdesigned
forinstallationonsmallmannedandunmannedvessels.
TheMBR144isanEthernetbasedradiothatrequiresnoextrainfrastructuretooperate.
ItoperatesonOSIlayer2asanetworkbridgetransportingIPpacketsovertheair
interfaceconnectingcomputers,sensorsandsystemstogether.TheradiohasaTDMA
accessprotocolwithusercongurabletimeslotallocation.TheMBR144supports
InternetProtocolversion4.

AradionetworkisanetworkofseveralMBRUnitscommunicatingtogether.Theradio
networkoperatesasawirelessradiomobileadhocnetwork(MANET)whichcanbe
usedasastand-alonenetworkorasanextensionofyourexistingradionetwork,orxed
networks.Theradionetworkisdenedbynetworkname,networkidandencryption
key.TheMBR144canbeusedtogetherwithallotherMBRUnitsintheproductfamily.
AradiositeisoneorseveralradiounitsconnectedtogetherbyalocalEthernet
connectionatthesamelocation.Thebenetsofaradiositewithseveralradiounitsisan
increasedcoverageareaorredundancywithradioscoveringthesamearea.Datalinks
toremoteMBRunitswillseamlesslybehandedoverfromoneRadioUnittoanother
RadioUnitonthesameradiosite.
Allantennas,radiotransceiversandsignalprocessingarecontainedintheradiounit.
TheMBR144issetupviaawebinterfacewhichisavailableoneachradiounit.Itcan
alsobesetupfromanAPI(applicationprogramminginterface).ContactKongsberg
SeatexASforinformationonAPI.

IfaMBR144systemisconnectedtoalocalareanetwork,datasecurityisimportant.
EquipmentmanufacturedbyKongsbergSeatexisfrequentlyconnectedtothevessel's
localareanetwork(LAN).Whenyouconnectacomputertoalocalareanetworkyou
willalwaysexposethedataonthatcomputer.Allothercomputersconnectedtothesame
networkmaybeabletoaccessyourdata.Severalthreatsmayimmediatelyoccur:
•Remotecomputerscanreadthedata.

•Remotecomputerscanchangethebehaviorofthecomputer,forexamplebyinstalling
unwantedsoftware.
Usually,twoparametersareusedtodenethethreatlevel:
1Thelikelihoodthatanyremotecomputerwilldoanyoftheabove.
2Thedamagedoneifaremotecomputersucceedsdoingthis.
KongsbergSeatexhasnoinformationregardingthecompletesysteminstallationon
anyvessel.SystemsprovidedbyKongsbergSeatexareregardedasstand-aloneofine
systems.Theyarestand-aloneeventhoughtheymaybeconnectedtoanetworkfor
sensorinterfacesand/ordatadistribution.
Note
NonetworksafetyapplicationsareinstalledonKongsbergSeatexcomputers.The
computersarethereforenotprotectedagainstviruses,malwareorunintentionalaccess
byexternalusers.
SecuringtheMBR144systemitselfhasnomeaningunlessthereisapolicyinplace
thatsecuresallcomputersinthenetwork.Thispolicymustincludephysicalaccessby
trainedandtrustedusers.Thecustomer/enduseroftheMBR144systemwillalways
beinchargeofdeningandimplementingasecurity,policyandprovidingtherelevant
networksecurityapplications.
