1. Technical Description and Field of Application
KSB Alarm Switchgear AS1-M
The AS1-M alarm switchgear, used in conjunction with the M 1 (K) alarm contactor,
can report impermissibly high water levels.
The M 1 (K) alarm contactor has a connection cable with a jack plug for connecting to
the AS1-M alarm switchgear.
The AS1-M alarm switchgear is fitted with a SCHUKO plug that is inserted into a
230 V AC SCHUKO socket (type C+E). In the event of a power failure, the operative
function is maintained for approximately 5 hours via a 9 V NiMH battery. The 9 V
NiMH battery is supplied fully charged. During normal mains-powered operation a
permanent trickle charge is provided (refer to Section 2 of these instructions:
Excessive Discharging).
A switch on the underside of the housing can be used to turn the AS1-M alarm
switchgear on and off. Pressing the switch in turns the device off; releasing the switch
turns the device on.
When the AS1-M alarm switchgear is turned on, an alarm is emitted as soon as the
liquid level raises the float switch of the M 1 (K) alarm contactor. The alarm stops as
soon as the liquid level causes the float switch to travel downward again.
The AS1-M alarm switchgear features a monitored jack socket so that when the
device is turned on and the jack plug is pulled out, an alarm is also triggered. No alarm
is triggered, however, in the event of a broken wire in the connection cable.

M 1 (K) alarm contactor and AS1-M alarm switchgear
All technical parameters of the AS1-M switchgear are specified in this brochure and
must be observed and followed, without exception, at all times. Applications
outside the envelope of the key technical data specified are prohibited.
This brochure must have been read and understood by the qualified specialist
personnel responsible prior to any installation, connection or commissioning work.
If any pages of this brochure do not accompany the product or are missing, they must be
requested and provided prior to engaging in installation, connection or
commissioning work.

2. Conditions for Safe Application
Nominal Power Supply
Mains voltage: AC 230 V ±10 %/50 - 60 Hz
All limits and restrictions defined for the voltage source must be upheld.
Chemical and Mechanical Resistance
Before the AS1-M alarm switchgear is deployed, it must be ensured that the materials
comprising the switchgear resist the ambient conditions present in the room in which the
device will be installed as well as sufficiently resist all other external influences from a
chemical and mechanical compatibility perspective.
In there is any doubt, an expert must be consulted before the device is deployed. The
product must not be used until final clarification has been made.
Exclusion of Damp and Moist Rooms
The AS1-M alarm switchgear must not be installed in damp and moist rooms.
Exclusion of Rooms That Can Become Flooded
The AS1-M alarm switchgear must not be installed in rooms that can become flooded.
Exclusion of the Effects of Moisture and Humidity on the AS1-M Alarm Switchgear
The AS1-M alarm switchgear must not be used in areas in which the device could be
subjected to moisture and humidity.
Exclusion of Potentially Explosive Atmospheres
The AS1-M alarm switchgear and the M 1 (K) alarm contactor must not be installed in
potentially explosive atmospheres.
Excessive Discharging
Not using the AS1-M alarm switchgear for an extended period of time can cause the built-
in rechargeable battery to become excessively discharged. This, in turn, greatly reduces
the service life of the battery, so that the device, when subsequently used, may not emit
an alarm in the event of a power failure.
3. Installation, Connection, Commissioning and Maintenance, Governing Rules and
Regulations
The AS1-M alarm switchgear and M 1 (K) alarm contactor must be installed,
connected, commissioned and maintained in full compliance with all information and
documentation provided, and the instructions contained therein must be observed and
followed without exception.
Installation, connection, commissioning and maintenance personnel must also
familiarise themselves with all applicable standards, requirements, local
regulations and special circumstances and act accordingly.
The AS1-M alarm switchgear must be installed in compliance with VDE

standard 0100 and all associated ancillary and successor standards.
4. Installing the AS1-M Alarm Switchgear
The AS1-M alarm switchgear is installed by connecting it to a C+E-type socket outlet.
Attention must also be paid to ensure that the switchgear is seated properly.
5. Connecting the M 1 (K) Alarm Contactor
The jack plug of the M 1 (K) alarm contactor must be inserted into the socket of the
AS1-M alarm switchgear located on the underside of the housing.
In the process, attention must be paid to ensure that the plug is inserted all the way
into the socket (i.e. up to the stop) and is firmly connected there so that it does not
become loose or disconnected later on.
6. Commissioning
The installation position, mechanical attachment and electrical connection must be
checked and verified a second time before commissioning is carried out.
A further check must also be performed to ensure that dangerous or hazardous
situations cannot arise as a result of not having followed one of the instructions,
standards or legal provisions and requirements.
If both of these checks are successful (i.e. no problems are detected), the device may
then be commissioned.
7. Maintenance
The AS1-M alarm switchgear and the M 1 (K) alarm contactor connected to it require
no maintenance.
The rechargeable battery of the AS1-M alarm switchgear must be replaced by
qualified staff every 7 years at the latest, however. When the battery is replaced,
caution must be exercised to avoid compromising the safe galvanic isolation
that separates the mains voltage from the jack socket.
A visual inspection and functional test of the alarm switchgear and alarm contactor
must be carried out every three months (or sooner).
In cases in which this is not sufficient, a monitoring schedule adapted in line with the
application scenario must be observed.

If the alarm switchgear is used as a safety link in a system, the installation may need to
be inspected and checked at designated intervals approved by the local supervisory
authority.
Qualified specialist personnel must familiarise themselves with all applicable
standards, requirements, local regulations and special circumstances and proceed
accordingly prior to performing maintenance work.
8. Repair
Any opening of the alarm switchgear and alarm contactor, and all repairs made to
them, must be carried out by specialist personnel appointed by the manufacturer.
Individuals other than those appointed by the manufacturer must never attempt to open
or perform repair work on the device.
9. Disposal
The alarm switchgear and alarm contactor must be disposed of by depositing them at
an appropriate collection point for electrical and electronics devices.
