When the XG-30 is placed inside a moving
object or a ferroconcrete building.
How to Specify the Direction of an Object
+The direction of an object from a point can be
specified in either compass direc tions or
bearing directions.
+The XG-30 includes both compass direction
and bearing direction functions.
The Compass Direction
+The compass directions are shown on the
adjacent table.
+Let's use the adjacent diagram as an example
to illustrate compass direction:
+Object B from point A is East.
+Object C from point A is Southeast.
+Object D from point A is Northwest.
The Bearing Direction
+The Bearing direction of an object is defined
as the angular difference between North and
the object. (Assume 0 for North, and the
measuring range is from 0 to 359 ).
+Let's use the adjacent diagram as an example
to illustrate bearing direction

What is Magnetic Declination
The angular difference between Magnetic North Pole
and True North Pole is called magnetic declination. Its
amount (degrees and minutes) and direction (easterly
and westerly) depend on where you are in the world.
The XG-3 0 al so i nclu d es a set ting for Mag netic
Declination compensation. Check the chapter 9.6 and
9.10 for more detail on how to compensate Magnetic
Declination.
Magnetic Declination Information
Most topographic maps include a small arrow which
sho wn m agne tic nor th p ole and or the magneti c
declination information.
This manual also includes the magnetic declination for
some cities in chapter 9.7.
For the city which does not include in this manual,
please refer to the below online resource:

+The Magnetic North Pole which is slightly different from
the True North Pole.
+The XG-30, like most magnetic compass, points to the
Magnetic North Pole. On the contrary, everything
measure from a map is related to the True North Pole.
+
+For serious compass user or whom intends to perform
accurate navigation, the XG-30 must be adjusted for
magnetic declination.

Check the position by Backward Bearing
Spot two distant identifiable landmarks such as
mounta ins , l ight-house and b uil ding from y our
current position. Let's use mountains A and B as in
the example.
Chec k ou t th e ba ckwar d bear ing dire ction of
mountains A and B from your current position: 135
from mountain A and 270 from mountain B.
Draw the line 135 on the map which start from the
mountain A, and draw another line 270 on the map
which start from the mountain B.
Your current position on the map will be at the
intersection point (point A) of the lines 135 and
270
Please check if the trek course is correct.
The XG-30 can keep your course correct during
trekking. Let's use the sample trail A-E on the
adjacent diagram to illustrate this application.
Mark the points where the trail turns its direction or
the trail branches its way, such as the point A, B, C,
D and E on the adjacent diagram.
Check out the bearing directions of point B from
point A (315 ), point C from point B (0 ), point D
from point C (225 ), and then point E from point D
(315 ).
Make sure that the heading direction is 315 in the
section A to B. Performing the similar checking
when trekking in the other trail sections.
IMPORTANT: If you are in doubt of the directions and
positions of the trail, consult the park administration
office before starting the trek.

Magnetic Declination Compensation
+To compensate an object's magnetic bearing
to true bearing(TB): Subtract westerly (W)
magnetic declination or add easterly (E)
magnetic d e clination w i t h the m a g netic
bearing (MB).

TB = MB + E. While MB = 278 ; E = 22
TB = 278 + 22

following conditions:

+
+
How to Calibrate the Compass
+The compass calibration includes two different
processes. They are the Rotation Calibration and
Magnetic Declination Setting.
+Rotation Calibration: Turn the XG-30 for more
than 2 turns in the Rotation Calibration Display
to
+Magnetic Declination Setting: Input the magnetic
declination of the city which is close to your
current position into the XG-30 in the Magnetic
Declination Display
+It is advisable to carry out them both from time
to time, this practice achieves the more accurate
compass reading.

be an inaccurate direction.
When the battery has been replaced,
When the bearing direction digits are flashing,
and the "OFF CAL" indicator is displayed,
When the compass is used in a new region far
apart from the place in which the compass had
been calibrated,

regulate the precision of the digital compass.
Rotation Calibration Display
+To select the Rotation Calibration Display,
hold the [SEL] button in Compass Display.
+To start rotation calibration, press [S/S] button
once, and then the pointer will start rotating.
+When the pointers is rotating, turn the XG-30
(keep parallel to the horizon) in the same
direction as the rotating pointers for more
than 2 turns.
+When t h e 2-turn r o tation c a l i b ration i s
completed, press the [S/S] or [L/R] button to
stop the calibration and the pointer.
+When the pointer is stopped, hold the [SEL]
button to back to the Compass Display or
pre ss the [SE L] button once to se t the
magnetic declination.
Magnetic Declination Display
+Check the previous chapter 9.7 to get the
magnetic declination of the city which is close
to your current position. That angle will be
inputted into the XG-30 during the calibration.
+To select Magnetic Declination Display, press
the [S EL] button in Ro tation Calibr ati on
Display.
+When the current magnetic declination is
appeared, press the [S/S] or [L/R] button to
increase / decrease the number. (Hold down
the button to change the number at a higher
speed).
+When the setting is completed, hold down the
[SEL] button to exit the setting display. The
XG-30 will also exit the setting display if NO
keystroke has been activated for 1 minute.

Low Batter Detection
+When the low-battery indicator appears on the
display, it means that the capacity of the
battery is low. It is recommended to replace
the battery with a new CR2032.
+However, if the appearance of low-battery
indicator is caused by using the XG-30 under
very cold condition, the indicator will be
