The disk drives contained in your LairdShareHD are delicate electronic instruments and are susceptible to
damage due to excessive physical shock. Place the unit in a vented area away from moisture or liquids. Please
handle the unit with care. Do not open the case. Doing so will void the warranty. If the product is returned with
damage caused by improper handling, the warranty will be void and liability will rest with the user.
D N T M VE THE LAIRDSHARE HD WHEN IT IS PERATING!
Drive failures are likely to occur if the LairdShare is moved while it is running.
Power
The LairdShareHD can be operated on standard AC power, and will switch to most international standards au-
tomatically. The LairdShareHD should be protected by surge suppression and battery backup system. Two bat-
tery backup systems may be used, one on each power supply, to increase protection. If the LairdShareHD
suffers a power outage, data written to it within the last minute or so may be lost.
Temperature
The optimal operating range for the LairdShareHD is between sixty-five and seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit.
More importantly, whatever temperature it runs at must remain reasonably stable. Large temperature swings of
+/- 10 degrees or more on a regular basis will reduce the life expectancy of the disk system. A small confined
space like a closet is therefore a bad choice for running the LairdShareHD.
1. To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose this equipment to the environment of Humidity and/or dust.
Do not use this equipment in an unprotected outdoor installation or any area classified as a wet area.
2. Always keep the product on a stable and secure base or enclosure. Do not drop the product or subject it to
sudden heavy impact.
3. Provide adequate ventilation so that thermal characteristics do not cause an increase in product tempera-
ture to resulting in overheating.
4. Do not clean the unit by using electrically conductive or corrosive chemicals. Always be certain to unplug
the unit from AC wall power before any major cleaning. Use a damp cloth only for cleaning.
5. Do not subject the product to electrical mains power over voltage: The product must be used at the rated
supply voltages indicated on the product rear panel only.
6. Do not plug the product into an overloaded electrical outlet. This may result in fire or electrical shock.
7. Object Ingress and Liquid Entry: Never insert or push sharp metal objects into the product or use such devices
for an attempt at opening or servicing the product. Servicing should be referred to a trained and qualified tech-
nician only. Do not allow liquid of any type to enter the unit. Do not allow the unit to be submersed in water as
this may cause a shock hazard.

REQUIREMENTS
Once all physical connections have been made the The LTM-LSHD is a platform independent device which
requires little setup on the part of the user. However, in order to function properly we require that any video
workstations using it feature gigabit ethernet & be connected to a good quality igabit switch.
We require that there be a DHCP server on the network. This is common, especially for offices using a basic
office firewall/router to share an internet connection. If you do not want to connect your network to the inter-
net a DHCP server still must be used to give the LairdShareHD an IP address. These can be typically pur-
chased for less than $100 if you do not already have one.
For the PhoneHome System to work, the LairdShareHD must be on a network from which workstations
could browse the internet. Additionally, the firewall must allow outgoing connections. If you have a firewall, it
will usually allow outgoing connections.

Troubleshooting:
Device Does Not Appear on Network
If when you connect your LairdShareHD to your existing igabit Ethernet network, it does not immediately show up on your sys-
tems, first check that the system is powered on. You should see a blue light next to each drive, and one near the power button.
Next make sure that you connected the ethernet cable to port 1 on the back. If you still do not see your LairdShareHD appear on
the network, please contact our support staff.
If our support staff are able to connect to your LairdShareHD over the PhoneHome Support system, they will work with you to
identify and solve any remaining issues. These commonly include having workstations on a different subnet than the Laird-
ShareHD, Windows Networking configuration issues (if you use Windows workstations), and making sure that Appletalk is working
correctly on both the LairdShareHD and on your workstations.
If our support staff are not able to connect to your LairdShareHD, they will still work with you to troubleshoot your network configu-
ration. It may be that you do not have a DHCP server running on your network, or that it is not enabled. Alternately, your Laird-
ShareHD may be incorrectly connected to the ethernet network, or the ethernet cable may be defective. In the advent that you do
not have a DHCP server running on your network, you will need to work with our support staff to modify the network. This may re-
quire a short (a few minutes) downtime during which you will need to connect an ethernet cable to port 2 (instead of the normal
port 1) and reconfigure your internet connection so that the LairdShareHD can be reached by support staff.
As DHCP is implemented in most office firewalls, such as Linksys and Cisco firewalls, it is more likely the case that it is simply not
running, and can be enabled, than that you will need to use this last option of temporarily reconfiguring the network.
Dropped Connection
If your LairdShareHD disappears from your network at any time, first attempt to power cycle it. You can do this by pressing and
holding the power button until the blue lights turn off. Then release the power button, and press it again. The blue lights should
turn back on. If this does not resolve the issue, contact our support staff to determine your repair options.
Change of Status Lights
If you have been using your LairdShareHD successfully for a while, but notice that one or more of the lights next to the drives are
no longer blue, please contact our support staff to arrange for a disk replacement. Failure of more than two disks at a single time
will cause data loss. Promptly replacing failed disks will usually ensure that no more than one disk is down at a time, and that you
will continue to experience the normal fast access to your data. Our support staff may need to schedule a time during which your
LairdShareHD is on an ethernet network from which workstations can browse the internet, so that they can access it via the
PhoneHome Support system to ensure that the RAID rebuild happens successfully after the drive replacement.
!In the event of drive failure please follow instruction in section
- Page 9-
Prior to removal of drives the LTM-LSHD must be powered down.
1. Have all users unmount the LTM-LSHD from their computers - Not following this step may cause incom-
plete data transfers
2. Press power button on the front of the LTM-LSHD - this will cause the LTM-LSHD to begin the shut-
down procedure. A full shutdown may take as long as four minutes
3. The fans on the device will continue to spin. This is normal & is meant to prevent any residual heat
from damaging the system
4. nce shutdown is complete & all status lights have powered off you must remove both of the power
cords from the rear of the unit.

Power Supply Replacement
To Remove the Power Supply
Press the retaining clip on the right side of the power supply along the direction of the arrow.
At the same time, pull out the power supply by using its handle. (The power supply takes considerable force to remove)
The LairdShareHD is designed with two 700W power supplies. If one power supply
does not work, you can replace the failed power supply without powering off the
server, because the other one can take the place of the failed one.
The location of the power supplies on the server chassis is shown below:

The PhoneHome Support System
The optional PhoneHome Support system is enabled by default on all LairdShareHDs. This system requires no interaction or
setup on your part, and allows our support staff to monitor the LairdShareHD system for hardware related issues, and to assist you
if you have any issues with your LairdShareHD system. It is fully encrypted, secure, and will not compromise your network or infor-
mation security.
The PhoneHome Support system operates by creating an encrypted link from your LairdShareHD server to our support system
over your existing TCP/IP network and internet connection. This link can be accessed only by our support staff. Under normal op-
eration, the PhoneHome Support system uses this link only to alert our support staff if your LairdShareHD experiences a hardware
failure, so that they can contact you to arrange a drive replacement or advanced repair options. No information about the number,
names, type, or the contents on your server will be transmitted.
In the advent of a disk failure, with your authorization, our Support staff can log into your LairdShareHD over this encrypted link to
help you rebuild the array and ensure continued optimal performance with little or no down time. Additionally, if you are having
trouble accessing your LairdShareHD system, our Support staff may be able to use this link to help troubleshoot and resolve any
other issues you may have with the LairdShareHD.
Optionally, this link can be use to provide more active maintenance for your LairdShareHD, such as software upgrades and secu-
rity patching. This will help ensure that your data is always accessible and that the LairdShareHD remains the most reliable sys-
tem for data storage.
