2.3 Unpacking the Sensor
Thesensorispackedinaseparatebox,carefullyprotected
againstmechanicalinfluences,inordertoavoiddamage
duringtransport.Whensecurelyinstalled,thesensorcanwith-
standshockandvibration,whichnormallyoccursonships.

2.4 Goods Inspection
Pleasethoroughlycheckthedeliverywithregardtocomplete-
nessandeventualtransportdamages.Incaseofeventual
claimspleasecontactusinwritingimmediately.
2.5 Power Supply
Thesensorrequiresattheinputconnectora24voltnominal
DCpowersourceforoperation.Thesensorheatinghasa
powerconsumptionof2·9W.
1 Introduction
ThesensorsoftheARCOfamilyareveryrobust,compactand
extremelyreliable.Whendevelopingthesesensorsparticular
considerationhasbeengiventothefulllmentofmeteorolog-
icalrequirements.
Thesystemacquiresthehorizontalairowandprocessesthe
measuringdatatothemeteorologicalparameterswindspeed
andwinddirection.
Thesensorsandfurthersystemcomponentsaremountedin
asplashwaterresistantanddust-proofmetalhousing.
Themeasureddataareoutputviaagalvanicallyisolated
RS485interfaceviaModbusRTUafterswitchingonthe
supplyvoltage.
Duetotheirshockandvibrationproofconstructionthesensors
ARCO-Modbusareparticularlyqualiedforuseundersevere
environmentalconditions.Thehousingandthemeasuring
elementsaremadeofseawaterresistantaluminumalloys.
Thehousing,thecuprotorandthewindvaneareanodized.
Anelectronicallycontrolledsensorheatingdeviceallowsfor
operationofthesensoroverthewiderangeof-30...70°C.
2 Start-Up
Windcanberepresentedbyavectorquantity.Foracomplete
descriptionofthewinditisnecessarytospecifyitsspeed
anddirection.Thetwocomponentsaresubjecttospatialand
temporalvariations;thus,strictlyspeaking,thevaluesareonly
validforthesitewherethemeasuringinstrumentisinstalled.
Wethereforerecommendselectingtheplaceofinstallation
verycarefully.
2.1 Installation Conditions
Forprofessionalwindmeasurementsthelocationandheight
ofthewindsensorareimportantforaccurate,correctresults
andrepresentativewindconditions.Ideally,thesensorshould
beinstalled10mabovethegroundonamast.Thereshould
alsobenothingaectingwindowwithinaradiusof150m
aroundthesensor.Thismaybebuildings,trees,talltowers,
liftingcranes,movingvehicles,aircrafts,helicoptersorother
obstructions.Inthecaseofmobilemeasurementsonvehicles
oftentheabovementionedconditionsarenotpracticable.
Thenyouhavetondcompromises.
Generally,windmeasuringinstrumentsshouldnotmeasure
thespecicwindconditionsofalimitedarea,butindicatethe
typicalwindconditionsofawiderarea.Thevaluesmeasured
atdierentplacesmustbecomparable.Thus,wheninstalling
thesensoryoushouldmakesuretheplaceofinstallationis
notundertheleeofgreatobstacles.Thedistancebetween
theobstaclesandthesensorshouldbe10timestheheight
oftheobstacles(thiscorrespondstothedenitionofanun-
disturbedterrain).
Ifanundisturbedterrainofthiskinddoesnotexist,thesensor
mustbeputupataheightofatleast5mabovetheobstacle
height.
Ifthesensormustbeinstalledonarooftop,theplaceofinstal-
lationmustbeinthemiddleoftherooftoavoidpredominant
winddirections.Ifyouwanttomeasurebothwinddirection
andwindspeed,ifpossible,thesensorsshouldbemounted
atthesamemeasuringpoint,withanymutualinterferenceof
thesensorsbeingavoided.ThesensorARCO-Modbusmeets
thisrequirement.
