Chapter 1 Meet your computer

1. O tical drive eject/close button Eject or close the o tical drive tray.
2. O tical drive activity indicator This indicator is on when the o tical drive is in use.
3. SD-card slot*

4. Storage drive activity indicator This indicator is on when the storage drive is in use.

5. Power button
Press to turn on the com uter.
To turn off the com uter, o en the Start menu, click Power, and then select
Shut down.
The indicator in the ower button shows the system status of your com uter.
• On: The com uter is on.
• Off: The com uter is off or in hibernation mode.
• Blinking: The com uter is in slee mode.
6. Micro hone connector Connect a micro hone.
7. Headset connector Connect a headset or head hones to your com uter.
8. USB 3.1 connectors Gen 1 (4) Connect USB-com atible devices, such as a USB keyboard, USB mouse, USB
storage device, or USB rinter.

Rear
1. Audio line-out connector
Send audio signals from the com uter to external devices, such as owered
stereo s eakers, head hones, or multimedia keyboards. To connect a stereo
system or other external recording device, connect a cable between the audio
line-in connector of the device and the audio line-out connector of the com uter.
Note: If your com uter has both an audio line-out connector and a headset or
head hone connector, always use the headset or head hone connector for
ear hones, head hones, or a headset. The head hone connector does not
su ort headset micro hones.
2. HDMI™ 1.4 out connector
Send audio and video signals from the com uter to another audio or video device,
such as a high- erformance monitor. For more information, see htt s://
www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_1_4/index.as x.
3. Dis layPort 1.2 out connector
Send audio and video signals from the com uter to another audio or video device,
such as a high- erformance monitor. For more information, see htt s://

4. VGA-out connector Send video signals from the com uter to another video device, such as a monitor.
5. USB 2.0 connectors (2) Connect USB-com atible devices, such as a USB keyboard, USB mouse, USB
storage device, or USB rinter.
6. USB 3.1 connectors Gen 1 (2) Connect USB-com atible devices, such as a USB keyboard, USB mouse, USB
storage device, or USB rinter.
7. Power cord connector Connect the ower cord to your com uter for ower su ly.

8. Serial connector Connect an external modem, a serial rinter, or other devices that use a serial
connector.
9. Ethernet connector
Connect to a local area network (LAN). When the green indicator is on, the
com uter is connected to a LAN. When the yellow indicator blinks, data is being
transmitted.
10. Smart cable cli slots (3) Lock devices (such as the keyboard and the mouse) to your com uter through a
smart cable cli .
11. Padlock loo Lock the com uter cover through a adlock.
12. Security-lock slot Lock your com uter to a desk, table, or other fixtures through a Kensington-style
cable lock.

Get started with Windows 10
Learn the basics of Windows 10 and start working with it right away. For more information about Windows
10, see the Windows hel information.
Windows account
To use the Windows o erating system, a user account is required. It can either be a Windows user account
or a Microsoft account.
Windows user account
When you start Windows for the first time, you are rom ted to create a Windows user account. This first
account you created is of the “Administrator” ty e. With an Administrator account, you can create additional
user accounts or change account ty es by doing the following:
1. O en the Start menu and select Settings ➙ Accounts ➙ Family & other users.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Microsoft account
You can also log in to the Windows o erating system with a Microsoft account.
To create a Microsoft account, go to the Microsoft sign-u age at htt s://signu .live.com and follow the on-
screen instructions.
With a Microsoft account, you can:
• Enjoy one-time signing in if you are using other Microsoft services, such as OneDrive, Sky e, and Outlook.

• Sync ersonalized settings across other Windows-based devices.

Windows user interface
1. Account Change account settings, lock the com uter, or sign out from the current account.
2. Documents O en the Documents folder, a default folder to save your received files.
3. Pictures O en the Pictures folder, a default folder to save your received ictures.

5. Power Shut down, restart, or ut the com uter into slee mode.
6. Start button O en the Start menu.
7. Windows Search Ty e what you are looking for in the search box and get search results from your
com uter and the Web.

9. Windows notification area Dis lay notifications and status of some features.
10. Battery status icon Dis lay ower status and change battery or ower settings. When your com uter
is not connected to ac ower, the icon changes to .
11. Network icon Connect to an available wireless network and dis lay the network status. When
connected to a wired network, the icon changes to .
12. Action center Dis lay the latest notifications from a s and rovide quick access to some
features.
Open the Start menu
• Click the Start button.
• Press the Windows logo key on the keyboard.
Open the Start context menu
Right-click the Start button.

Access Control Panel

Launch an app

Connect to networks
Your com uter hel s you connect to the world through a wired or wireless network.
Connect to the wired Ethernet
Connect your com uter to a local network through the Ethernet connector on your com uter with an
Ethernet cable.
Connect to Wi-Fi networks (for selected models)
1. Click the network icon in the Windows notification area. A list of available wireless networks is dis layed.
2. Select a network to connect. Provide required information if needed.
Use Lenovo Vantage
The reinstalled Lenovo Vantage is a customized one-sto solution to hel you maintain your com uter with
automated u dates and fixes, configure hardware settings, and get ersonalized su ort.
Access Lenovo Vantage
O en the Start menu and click Lenovo Vantage. You also can ty e Lenovo Vantage in the search box.
To download the latest version of Lenovo Vantage, go to Microsoft Store and search by the a name.
Key features
Lenovo Vantage makes eriodic u dates of the features to kee im roving your ex erience with your
com uter.
Note: The available features vary de ending on the com uter model.

Download and install firmware and driver u dates to kee your com uter u -to-date. You can configure
the o tions to install u dates automatically when available.

Configure intelligent settings of the following hardware to make your com uter smarter to use:

To enhance the hearing enjoyment, connect s eakers, head hones, or a headset to the audio connector.
Adjust the volume
1. Click the volume icon in the Windows notification area on the taskbar.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions to adjust the volume. Click the s eaker icon to mute the audio.
Change the sound settings
1. Go to Control Panel and view by category.
2. Click Hardware and Sound ➙ Sound.
3. Change the settings as you refer.

Manage power
Use the information in this section to achieve the best balance between erformance and ower efficiency.
Set power button behaviors
You can define what the ower button does according to your reference. For exam le, by ressing the
ower button, you can turn off the com uter or ut the com uter to slee or hibernation mode.
To change what the ower button does:
1. Go to Control Panel and view by large icons or small icons.
2. Click Power Options ➙ Choose what the power buttons do.
3. Change the settings as you refer.
Set the power plan
For ENERGY STAR® com liant com uters, the following ower lan takes effect when your com uters have
been idle for a s ecified duration:

• Turn off the dis lay: After 10 minutes
• Put the com uter to slee : After 25 minutes
To awaken the com uter from Slee mode, ress any key on your keyboard.
To reset the ower lan to achieve the best balance between erformance and ower saving:
1. Go to Control Panel and view by large icons or small icons.
2. Click Power Options, and then choose or customize a ower lan of your reference.
Transfer data
Quickly share your files using the built-in Bluetooth technology among devices with the same features. You
also can install a disc or media card to transfer data.
Connect to a Bluetooth-enabled device (for selected models)
You can connect all ty es of Bluetooth-enabled device to your com uter, such as a keyboard, a mouse, a
smart hone, or s eakers. The devices must be within a short distance, usually 10 meters (33 feet), from the
com uter.
1. Turn on Bluetooth on the com uter.
a. O en the Start menu, and then click Settings ➙ Devices ➙ Bluetooth & other devices.
b. Turn on the Bluetooth switch.
2. Click Add Bluetooth or other device ➙ Bluetooth.
3. Select a Bluetooth device, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Your Bluetooth device and com uter will automatically connect the next time if the two devices are in range
of each other with Bluetooth turned on. You can use Bluetooth for data transfer or remote control and
communication.
Use the optical drive (for selected models)
If your com uter has an o tical drive, read the following information.
Know the type of your optical drive
1. Right-click the Start button to o en the Start context menu.
2. Click Device Manager. Ty e the administrator assword or rovide confirmation if rom ted.
Install or remove a disc
1. With the com uter on, ress the eject/close button on the o tical drive. The tray slides out of the drive.
2. Insert a disc into the tray or remove a disc from the tray, and then ress the eject/close button again to
close the tray.
Note: If the tray does not slide out of the drive when you ress the eject/close button, turn off the com uter.
Then, insert a straightened a er cli into the emergency-eject hole adjacent to the eject/close button. Use
the emergency eject only in an emergency.
Record a disc
1. Insert a recordable disc into the o tical drive that su orts recording.
2. Do one of the following:
• O en the Start menu, and then click Settings ➙ Devices ➙ AutoPlay. Select or turn on Use
AutoPlay for all media and devices.
• O en Windows Media Player.
• Double-click the ISO file.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Use a media card (for selected models)
If your com uter has a SD-card slot, read the following information.
Install a media card
1. Locate the SD-card slot.
2. Ensure that the metal contacts on the card are facing that in the SD-card slot. Insert the card firmly into
the SD-card slot until it is secured in lace.
Remove a media card
Attention: Before removing a media card, eject the card from the Windows o erating system first.
Otherwise, data on the card might get corru ted or lost.
1. Click the triangular icon in the Windows notification area to show hidden icons. Then, right-click the
Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon.
2. Select the corres onding item to eject the card from the Windows o erating system.
3. Press the card and remove it from your com uter. Store the card safely for future use.
