Thichaptercontaintheafetyinformationthatyouneedtobefamiliarwithbeforeervicingacomputer.
Generasafety
Followtheeruletoenuregeneralafety:
•Keeptheareaaroundthecomputerclearandcleanduringandaftermaintenance.
•Whenliftinganyheavyobject:
1.Enureyoucantandafelywithoutlipping.
2.Ditributetheweightoftheobjectequallyacrobothfeet.
3.Liftlowly.Nevermoveuddenlyortwitwhenyouattempttolift.
4.Liftbytandingorbypuhingupwithyourlegmucle;thiactionremovethetrainfromthe
mucleinyourback.
Donotattempttoliftanyobjectsthatweighmorethan16kg(35lb)orobjectsthatyouthinkare
tooheavyforyou.
•Donotperformanyactionthatwouldcreateahazardforthecutomer,orwouldmakethecomputer
unafe.
•Beforeyoutartthecomputer,enurethatotherervicerepreentativeandcutomerperonnelarenot
inapoitionthatwouldcreateahazardforthem.
•Placeremovedcoverandotherpartinaafeplace,awayfromallperonnel,whileyouareervicingthe
computer.
•Keepyourtoolcaeawayfromareathatpeoplemaywalkthroughtoenureno-onetripoverit.
•Donotwearlooeclothingthatcanbetrappedinthemovingpartofamachine.Enurethatyourleeve
arefatenedorrolledupaboveyourelbow.Ifyourhairilong,tieorfatenitback.
•Inerttheendofyournecktieorcarfinideclothingorfatenitwithanon-conductiveclip,
approximately8centimeter(3inche)fromtheend.
•Donotwearjewelry,chain,metal-frameeyeglae,ormetalfatenerforyourclothing.
Remember:Metalobjectaregoodelectricalconductor.
•Wearafetyglaewhenyouare:hammering,drillingoldering,cuttingwire,attachingpring,uing
olvent,orworkinginanyotherconditionthatmightbehazardoutoyoureye.
•Afterervice,reintallallafetyhield,guard,label,andgroundwire.Replaceanyafetydevice
thatiwornordefective.
•Reattachallcovercorrectlybeforereturningthecomputertothecutomer.
Eectricasafety
CAUTION:
Eectricacurrentfrompower,teephone,andcommunicationcabescanbehazardous.Toavoid
personainjuryorequipmentdamage,disconnectanyattachedpowercords,teecommunication
cabes,networkcabes,andmodemcabesbeforeyouopenthecomputercovers,unessinstructed
otherwiseintheinstaationandconfigurationprocedures.

Obervethefollowingrulewhenworkingonelectricalequipment.
Important:Ueonlyapprovedtoolandtetequipment.Somehandtoolhavehandlecoveredwithaoft
materialthatdoenotinulateyouwhenworkingwithliveelectricalcurrent.Manycutomerhaverubber
floormatneartheirequipmentthatcontainmallconductivefibertodecreaeelectrotaticdicharge.
•Findtheroomemergencypower-off(EPO)witch,diconnectingwitch,orelectricaloutlet.Ifanelectrical
accidentoccur,youcanthenoperatethewitchorunplugthepowercordquickly.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardouconditionornearequipmentthathahazardouvoltage.
•Diconnectallpowerbefore:
–Performingamechanicalinpection
–Workingnearpowerupplie
–RemovingorintallingFieldReplaceableUnit(FRU)
•Beforeyoutarttoworkonthecomputer,unplugthepowercord.Ifyoucannotunplugit,akthe
cutomertopower-offtheelectricaloutletthatuppliepowertothemachineandtolocktheelectrical
outletintheoffpoition.
•Ifyouneedtoworkonacomputerthathaexpoedelectricalcircuit,obervethefollowingprecaution:
–Enurethatanotherperon,familiarwiththepower-offcontrol,inearyou.
Remember:Anotherperonmutbetheretowitchoffthepower,ifneceary.
–Ueonlyonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;keeptheotherhandinyour
pocketorbehindyourback.
Remember:Theremutbeacompletecircuittocaueelectricalhock.Byobervingtheaboverule,
youmaypreventacurrentfrompaingthroughyourbody.
–Whenuingateter,etthecontrolcorrectlyanduetheapprovedprobeleadandacceoriefor
thatteter.
–Standonuitablerubbermat(obtainedlocally,ifneceary)toinulateyoufromgrounducha
metalfloortripandmachineframe.
Obervethepecialafetyprecautionwhenyouworkwithveryhighvoltage;theeintructionarein
theafetyectionofthemaintenanceinformation.Ueextremecarewhenmeauringhighvoltage.
•Regularlyinpectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtooltoenuretheyareafetoue.
•Donotuewornorbrokentoolandteter.
•Neverassumethatpowerhabeendiconnectedfromacircuit.Firt,checkthatithabeenpoweredoff.
•Alwaylookcarefullyforpoiblehazardinyourworkarea.Exampleoftheehazardarewetfloor,
non-groundedpowerextenioncable,conditionthatmaycaueorallowpowerurge,andmiing
afetyground.
•Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitwiththereflectiveurfaceofaplaticdentalmirror.Thiurfacei
conductive,andtouchingalivecircuitcancaueperonalinjuryanddamagetothecomputer.
•Donotervicethefollowingpartwiththepoweronwhentheyareremovedfromtheirnormaloperating
poitioninacomputer:
–Powerupplyunit
–Pump
–Blowerandfan
–Motorgenerator
andimilarunit.(Thipracticeenurecorrectgroundingoftheunit.)
•Ifanelectricalaccidentoccur:
–Uecaution;donotbecomeavictimyourelf.
