hapter 1. Overview
This cha ter rovides basic information to hel you get familiar with your com uter.

Used to eject the tray of the o tical drive. After you insert a disc into the tray, ress the eject/close button to
close the tray.
2 Optical drive status indicator
This indicator is on when the o tical drive is in use.
3 Front-access storage enclosure
Used to rovide access to the hot-swa able storage drive.
4 ard reader slot
Used to read data from a su orted memory card.
5 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type- connector
Used to connect a USB-com atible device, such as a USB keyboard, mouse, scanner, rinter, or ersonal
digital assistant (PDA). For o timal data transfer, connect a USB 3.1 Gen 1 device to a USB 3.1 Gen 1
connector instead of a USB 2.0 connector.
6 Power button
Used to turn on your com uter. When you cannot shut down the com uter from the o erating system, ress
and hold the ower button for four or more seconds to turn off the com uter.
7 Power indicator
This indicator is on when the com uter is on.
8 Storage drive activity indicator
This indicator is on when the storage drive is in use.
9 Microphone connector
Used to connect a micro hone to your com uter. You can use the micro hone to record sounds or interact
with the com uter using s eech-recognition software.
10 Headset connector
Used to connect headset to your com uter.
11 USB 3.1 Gen 1 connectors
Used to connect a USB-com atible device. For o timal data transfer, connect a USB 3.1 Gen 1 device to a
USB 3.1 Gen 2 or USB 3.1 Gen 1 connector instead of a USB 2.0 connector.
12 USB 3.1 Gen 2 connectors
Used to connect a USB-com atible device. For o timal data transfer, connect a USB 3.1 Gen 2 device to a
USB 3.1 Gen 2 connector instead of a USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 2.0 connector.
13 Illuminated red dot
This indicator is on when the com uter is on.

14 Internal speaker
Used to listen to the sounds from your com uter without using a headset or head hones.

1 Audio line-out connector
Used to send audio signals from the com uter to external devices, such as owered stereo s eakers,
head hones, or multimedia keyboards. To connect a stereo system or other external recording device,

connect a cable between the audio line-in connector of the device and the audio line-out connector of the
com uter.
Note: If your com uter has both an audio line-out connector and a headset or head hone connector, always
use the headset connector or head hone connector for ear hones, head hones, or a headset. The
head hone connector does not su ort headset micro hones.
2 VGA-out connector
Used to send video signals from the com uter to another video device, such as a monitor.
3 DisplayPort 1.2 out connector
Used to send audio and video signals from the com uter to another audio or video device, such as a high-
erformance monitor.
4 USB 3.1 Gen 1 connector
Used to connect a USB-com atible device. For o timal data transfer, connect a USB 3.1 Gen 1 device to a
USB 3.1 Gen 2 or USB 3.1 Gen 1 connector instead of a USB 2.0 connector. This connector su orts the
smart ower on feature that enables you to turn on the com uter or wake it u from S4 hibernation mode by
ressing Alt+P on the keyboard. You can enable or disable the smart ower on feature from the Setu Utility
rogram. For detailed information, see the Important Product Information Guide.
5 USB 3.1 Gen 1 connectors
Used to connect a USB-com atible device. For o timal data transfer, connect a USB 3.1 Gen 1 device to a
USB 3.1 Gen 2 or USB 3.1 Gen 1 connector instead of a USB 2.0 connector.
6 Power cord connector
Used to connect the ower cord to your com uter for ower su ly.
7 Serial connector
Used to connect an external modem, a serial rinter, or other devices that use a serial connector.
8 PS/2 mouse connector
Used to connect a mouse, a trackball, or other ointing devices that use a PS/2 mouse connector.
9 PS/2 keyboard connector
Used to connect a keyboard that uses a Personal System/2 (PS/2) keyboard connector.
10 Ethernet connector
Used to connect an Ethernet cable for network access.
11 Rear Wi-Fi antenna cover
Used to rotect the rear Wi-Fi antenna that is o tional.
12 Serial connector
Used to connect an external modem, a serial rinter, or other devices that use a serial connector.

13 Padlock loop
Used to secure a adlock.
14 Smart cable clip slots
Used to secure a smart cable cli .
15 P I-Express card area
To im rove the o erating erformance of the com uter, you can connect PCI-Ex ress cards into this area.
De ending on the com uter model, the connectors in this area vary.
16 Security-lock slot
Used to secure a Kensington-style cable lock.

hapter 3. omputer locks
This cha ter rovides instructions on how to lock your com uter with the locking devices to kee your
com uter safe.
Enabling or disabling the E-lock
Your com uter may have a security lock solution installed to rotect the com uter from unauthorized
tam ering of the internal com onents. Using the E-Lock, you can mechanically lock or unlock the com uter
cover.
To enable or disable the E-Lock, do the following:
1. Turn on or restart the com uter.
2. Before Windows starts u , re eatedly ress and release the F1 or Fn+F1 key until the Setu Utility
rogram o ens.
3. Click Security ➙ Electronic Lock to enable or disable the E-lock.
4. Press F10 or Fn+F10 to save the changes and reboot the com uter.
Note: Changes do not take effect until the setting is saved and the system is rebooted.

Locking the computer cover
Locking the com uter cover hel s revent unauthorized access to the inside of your com uter. Your
com uter features a adlock loo so that the com uter cover cannot be removed when a adlock is
installed.

Attaching a Kensington-style cable lock
You can use a Kensington-style cable lock to secure your com uter to a desk, table, or other non ermanent
fixture. The cable lock connects to the security-lock slot at the rear of your com uter. De ending on the ty e
selected, the cable lock can be o erated with a key or combination. The cable lock also locks the buttons
used to o en the com uter cover. This is the same ty e of lock used with many notebook com uters. You
can order such a cable lock directly from Lenovo by searching for Kensington at:

Attaching a cable lock
A cable lock can be used to secure devices, such as the keyboard and the mouse, by locking the device
cables to the com uter. The cable lock connects to the cable-lock slots on the rear of the com uter. To
install a cable lock, do the following:
1. Insert the cli 1 into the cable-lock slot 4.
2. Pull the cables you want to lock through the dents in the cable lock.
3. Press the cli 2 into the cable-lock slot 3 until it sna s into osition.

This cha ter rovides instructions on how to re lace hardware for your com uter.
Before replacing hardware
Attention: Do not o en your com uter or attem t any re airs before reading this section and the Important
Product Information Guide.
Notes before replacing hardware
• Use com uter com onents rovided only by Lenovo.
• When installing or re lacing an o tion, use the a ro riate instructions ex lained in this manual along with
the instructions that come with the o tion.
• In most areas of the world, Lenovo requires the return of defective CRUs. Information about this will come
with the CRU or will come a few days after the CRU arrives.
Handling static-sensitive devices
Do not o en the static- rotective ackage containing the new art until the defective art has been removed
and you are ready to install the new art. Static electricity, although harmless to you, can seriously damage
com uter com onents and o tions.
When you handle o tions and other com uter com onents, take these recautions to avoid static-electricity
damage:
• Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build u around you.
• Always handle o tions and other com uter com onents carefully. Handle PCI/PCIe cards, memory
modules, system boards, and micro rocessors by the edges. Never touch any ex osed circuitry.
• Prevent others from touching the o tions and other com uter com onents.
• Touch the static- rotective ackage containing the art to a metal ex ansion-slot cover or other
un ainted metal surface on the com uter for at least two seconds. This reduces static electricity from the
ackage and your body before you install or re lace a new art.
• When ossible, remove the new art from the static- rotective ackage, and install it directly in the
com uter without setting the art down. When this is not ossible, lace the static- rotective ackage on
a smooth, level surface and lace the art on the ackage.
• Do not lace the art on the com uter cover or other metal surface.
Knowing FRUs (including RUs)
• Field Re laceable Units (FRUs) are com uter arts that a trained technician can u grade or re lace. FRUs
include all CRUs. For detailed FRU information, such as the FRU art numbers and su orted com uter
models, go to:

• Customer Re laceable Units (CRUs) are com uter arts that a user can u grade or re lace.
– Self-service CRUs: You can install self-service CRUs easily. These CRUs might be stand-alone,
latched, or secured by u to two screws. Exam les of self-service CRUs include the keyboard, mouse,
any USB device. You are res onsible for re lacing all self-service CRUs.
– O tional-service CRUs: Handling o tional-service CRUs requires some technical skills and sim le tools
(such as a screwdriver). These CRUs are isolated arts within the com uter. They are usually

concealed by an access anel that is secured by more than two screws. You must remove the screws
and anel to access the s ecific CRU. O tional-service CRUs can be removed and installed by users
or, during the warranty eriod, by a Lenovo service technician.
Before replacing FRUs
Before re lacing any FRU, read the following:
• Only certified and trained ersonnel can service the com uter.
• Before re lacing an FRU, read the entire section about re lacing the art.
• Be extremely careful during writing o erations such as co ying, saving, or formatting.
The sequence of the drives in the com uter that you are servicing might have been altered. If you select
an incorrect drive, data or rograms might be overwritten.
• Re lace an FRU only with another FRU of the correct model.
When you re lace an FRU, ensure that the model of the machine and the FRU art number are correct.
• An FRU should not be re laced because of a single, unre roducible failure.
Single failures can occur for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with a hardware defect, such as
cosmic radiation, electrostatic discharge, or software errors. Consider re lacing an FRU only when a
roblem recurs. If you sus ect that an FRU is defective, clear the error log and run the test again. If the
error does not recur, do not re lace the FRU.
• Only re lace a defective FRU.

Replacing the power cord
Attention: Do not o en your com uter or attem t any re airs before reading the Important Product
Information Guide.
1. Remove any media from the drives and turn off all connected devices and the com uter. Disconnect all
ower cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables from the com uter.
2. Re lace the ower cord.
