Statement 1

DANGER

Electrical current from power, telephone, and communication cables is hazardous.

To avoid a shock hazard:

• Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration

of this product during an electrical storm.

• Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet.

• Connect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to this product.

• When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.

• Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural damage.

• Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems

before you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and

configuration procedures.

• Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following table when installing, moving, or

opening covers on this product or attached devices.

To Connect: To Disconnect:

1. Turn everything OFF.

2. First, attach all cables to devices.

3. Attach signal cables to connectors.

4. Attach power cords to outlet.

5. Turn device ON.

Statement 2

CAUTION:

When replacing the lithium battery, use only Part Number 33F8354 or an equivalent type battery

recommended by the manufacturer. If your system has a module containing a lithium battery, replace

it only with the same module type made by the same manufacturer. The battery contains lithium and

can explode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of. Do not:

• Throw or immerse into water

• Heat to more than 100°C (212°F)

• Repair or disassemble

Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations.

Statement 3

CAUTION:

When laser products (such as CD-ROMs, DVD drives, fiber optic devices, or transmitters) are

installed, note the following:

• Do not remove the covers. Removing the covers of the laser product could result in exposure to

hazardous laser radiation. There are no serviceable parts inside the device.

• Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein

might result in hazardous radiation exposure.

DANGER

Some laser products contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following.

The power control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the

electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To

remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the

power source.

Statement 6

CAUTION:

If you install a strain-relief bracket option over the end of the power cord that is connected to the

device, you must connect the other end of the power cord to an easily accessible power source.

Statement 8

CAUTION:

Never remove the cover on a power supply or any part that has the following label attached.

Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels are present inside any component that has this label

attached. There are no serviceable parts inside these components. If you suspect a problem with one

of these parts, contact a service technician.

Chapter 1. Start here

You can solve many problems without outside assistance by ollowing the troubleshooting procedures in this

documentation and on the World Wide Web.

This document describes the diagnostic tests that you can per orm, troubleshooting procedures, and

explanations o error messages and error codes. The documentation that comes with your operating system

and so tware also contains troubleshooting in ormation.

Diagnosing a problem

Be ore you contact IBM or an approved warranty service provider, ollow these procedures in the order in

which they are presented to diagnose a problem with your server.

Step 1. Return the server to the condition it was in before the problem occurred.

I any hardware, so tware, or irmware was changed be ore the problem occurred, i possible,

reverse those changes. This might include any o the ollowing items:

• Hardware components

• Device drivers and irmware

• System so tware

• UEFI irmware

• System input power or network connections

Step 2. View the light path diagnostics EDs and event logs. The server is designed or ease o

diagnosis o hardware and so tware problems.

• ight path diagnostics EDs: See “Light path diagnostics” on page 381 or in ormation about

using light path diagnostics LEDs.

• Event logs: See “Event logs” on page 26 or in ormation about noti ication events and

diagnosis.

• Software or operating-system error codes: See the documentation or the so tware or

operating system or in ormation about a speci ic error code. See the manu acturer's website or

documentation.

Step 3. Run IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) and collect system data. Run Dynamic System

Analysis (DSA) to collect in ormation about the hardware, irmware, so tware, and operating

system. Have this in ormation available when you contact IBM or an approved warranty service

provider. For instructions or running DSA, see the Dynamic System Analysis Installation and User's

Guide.

Step 4. Check for and apply code updates. Fixes or workarounds or many problems might be available

in updated UEFI irmware, device irmware, or device drivers. To display a list o available updates

or the server, go to http://www.ibm.com/support/ ixcentral/.

Attention: Installing the wrong irmware or device-driver update might cause the server to

mal unction. Be ore you install a irmware or device-driver update, read any readme and change

history iles that are provided with the downloaded update. These iles contain important

in ormation about the update and the procedure or installing the update, including any special

procedure or updating rom an early irmware or device-driver version to the latest version.

Important: Some cluster solutions require speci ic code levels or coordinated code updates. I the

device is part o a cluster solution, veri y that the latest level o code is supported or the cluster

solution be ore you update the code.

a. Install UpdateXpress system updates. You can install code updates that are packaged as an

UpdateXpress System Pack or UpdateXpress CD image. An UpdateXpress System Pack

contains an integration-tested bundle o online irmware and device-driver updates or your

server. In addition, you can use IBM ToolsCenter Bootable Media Creator to create bootable

media that is suitable or applying irmware updates and running preboot diagnostics. For

more in ormation about UpdateXpress System Packs, see http://www.ibm.com/support/entry/

Be sure to separately install any listed critical updates that have release dates that are later

than the release date o the UpdateXpress System Pack or UpdateXpress image (see step b. “”

on page 2).

b. Install manual system updates.

1. Determine the existing code levels. In DSA, click Firmware/VPD to view system

irmware levels, or click Software to view operating-system levels.

2. Download and install updates of code that is not at the latest level. To display a list o

available updates or the server, go to http://www.ibm.com/support/ ixcentral/.

When you click an update, an in ormation page is displayed, including a list o the

problems that the update ixes. Review this list or your speci ic problem; however, even i

your problem is not listed, installing the update might solve the problem.

Step 5. Check for and correct an incorrect configuration. I the server is incorrectly con igured, a

system unction can ail to work when you enable it; i you make an incorrect change to the server

con iguration, a system unction that has been enabled can stop working.

a. Make sure that all installed hardware and software are supported. See http://

www.ibm.com/systems/in o/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/ to veri y that the server

supports the installed operating system, optional devices, and so tware levels. I any hardware

or so tware component is not supported, uninstall it to determine whether it is causing the

problem. You must remove nonsupported hardware be ore you contact IBM or an approved

warranty service provider or support.

b. Make sure that the server, operating system, and software are installed and configured

correctly. Many con iguration problems are caused by loose power or signal cables or

incorrectly seated adapters. You might be able to solve the problem by turning o the server,

reconnecting cables, reseating adapters, and turning the server back on. For in ormation about

per orming the checkout procedure, see “About the checkout procedure” on page 359. For

in ormation about con iguring the server, see Chapter 6 “Con iguration in ormation and

instructions” on page 513.

Step 6. See controller and management software documentation. I the problem is associated with a

speci ic unction ( or example, i a RAID hard disk drive is marked o line in the RAID array), see the

documentation or the associated controller and management or controlling so tware to veri y that

the controller is correctly con igured.

Problem determination in ormation is available or many devices such as RAID and network

adapters.

Step 7. Check for troubleshooting procedures and RETAIN tips. Troubleshooting procedures and

RETAIN tips document known problems and suggested solutions. To search or troubleshooting

Step 8. Use the troubleshooting tables. See “Troubleshooting tables” on page 360 to ind a solution to a

problem that has identi iable symptoms.

A single problem might cause multiple symptoms. Follow the troubleshooting procedure or the

most obvious symptom. I that procedure does not diagnose the problem, use the procedure or

another symptom, i possible.

I the problem remains, contact IBM or an approved warranty service provider or assistance with

additional problem determination and possible hardware replacement. To open an online service

provide in ormation about any error codes and collected data.

Undocumented problems

I you have completed the diagnostic procedure and the problem remains, the problem might not have been

previously identi ied by IBM. A ter you have veri ied that all code is at the latest level, all hardware and

so tware con igurations are valid, and no light path diagnostics LEDs or log entries indicate a hardware

component ailure, contact IBM or an approved warranty service provider or assistance.
