This information can help you safely use your notebook computer. Follow and retain all information included
with your computer. The information in this document does not alter the terms of your purchase agreement
or the Lenovo Limited Warranty. For more information, see "Warranty Information" in the Safety, Warranty,
and Setup Guide that comes with your computer.
Customer safety is important. Our products are developed to be safe and effective. However, personal
computers are electronic devices. Power adapters and other features can create potential safety risks that
can result in physical injury or property damage, especially if misused. To reduce these risks, follow the
instructions included with your product, observe all warnings on the product and in the operating
instructions, and review the information included in this document carefully. By carefully following the
information contained in this document and provided with your product, you can help protect yourself from
hazards and create a safer computer work environment.
Note: This information includes references to power adapters and batteries. In addition to notebook
computers, some products (such as speakers and monitors) ship with external power adapters. If you have
such a product, this information applies to your product. In addition, computer products contain a coin-sized
internal battery that provides power to the system clock even when the computer is unplugged, so the
battery safety information applies to all computer products.
Conditions that equi e immediate action
P oducts can become damaged due to misuse o neglect. Some p oduct damage is se ious enough
that the p oduct should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessa y, epai ed by an
autho ized se vice .
As with any elect onic device, pay close attention to the p oduct when it is tu ned on. On ve y a e
occasions, you might notice an odo o see a puff of smoke o spa ks vent f om you p oduct. O you
might hea sounds like popping, c acking, o hissing. These conditions might me ely mean that an
inte nal elect onic component has failed in a safe and cont olled manne . O , they might indicate a
potential safety issue. Howeve , do not take isks o attempt to diagnose the situation you self.

F equently inspect you compute and its components fo damage o wea o signs of dange . If you
have any question about the condition of a component, do not use the p oduct. Contact the Custome
Suppo t Cente o the p oduct manufactu e fo inst uctions on how to inspect the p oduct and have it
epai ed, if necessa y.
In the unlikely event that you notice any of the following conditions, o if you have any safety conce ns
with you p oduct, stop using the p oduct and unplug it f om the powe sou ce and
telecommunication lines until you can speak to the Custome Suppo t Cente fo fu the guidance.
• Power cords, plugs, power adapters, extension cords, surge protectors, or power supplies that are
cracked, broken, or damaged.
• Signs of overheating, smoke, sparks, or fire.

• Damage to a battery (such as cracks, dents, or creases), discharge from a battery, or a buildup of foreign
substances on the battery.
• A cracking, hissing, or popping sound, or strong odor that comes from the product.
• Signs that liquid has been spilled or an object has fallen onto the computer product, the power cord, or
power adapter.
• The computer product, power cord, or power adapter has been exposed to water.
• The product has been dropped or damaged in any way.
• The product does not operate normally when you follow the operating instructions.
Note: If you notice these conditions with a product (such as an extension cord) that is not manufactured for
or by Lenovo , stop using that product until you can contact the product manufacturer for further
instructions, or until you get a suitable replacement.
Se vice and upg ades
Do not attempt to service a product yourself unless instructed to do so by the Customer Support Center or
your documentation. Only use a Service Provider who is approved to repair your particular product.
Note: Some computer parts can be upgraded or replaced by the customer. Upgrades typically are referred
to as options. Replacement parts approved for customer installation are referred to as Customer
Replaceable Units, or CRUs. Lenovo provides documentation with instructions when it is appropriate for
customers to install options or replace CRUs. You must closely follow all instructions when installing or
replacing parts. Before you remove the covers from a product equipped with a power adapter, always make
sure that the power is turned off and that the product is unplugged from any power source. If you have any
questions or concerns, contact the Customer Support Center.
Although there are no moving parts in your computer after the power adapter has been disconnected, the
following warnings are required for your safety.

Powe adapte s
DANGER
Use only the powe adapte s supplied by the p oduct manufactu e .
Neve w ap a powe adapte cable a ound a powe adapte o othe object. Doing so can st ess the
co d in ways that can cause the powe adapte cable to f ay, c ack, o c imp. This can p esent a
safety haza d.
Always oute the powe adapte cable so that they will not be walked on, t ipped ove , o pinched by
objects.
P otect powe adapte s f om liquids. Fo instance, do not leave you powe adapte nea sinks,
tubs, toilets, o on floo s that a e cleaned with liquid cleanse s. Liquids can cause a sho t ci cuit,
pa ticula ly if the powe adapte has been st essed by misuse. Liquids also can cause g adual
co osion of the connecto te minals on a powe adapte , which can eventually esult in
ove heating.
Ensu e that all powe adapte connecto s a e secu ely and completely plugged into eceptacles.
Do not use any powe adapte that shows co osion at the ac input pins o shows signs of
ove heating (such as defo med plastic) at the ac input pins o anywhe e on the powe adapte .
To p event possible ove heating, do not cove the powe adapte with clothing o othe objects
when the powe adapte is plugged into an elect ical outlet.
Extension co ds and elated devices
Ensure that extension cords, surge protectors, uninterruptible power supplies, and power strips that you use
are rated to handle the electrical requirements of the product. Never overload these devices. If power strips
are used, the load should not exceed the power strip input rating. Consult an electrician for more information
if you have questions about power loads, power requirements, and input ratings.

Plugs and outlets
DANGER
If a eceptacle (powe outlet) that you intend to use with you compute equipment appea s to be
damaged o co oded, do not use the outlet until it is eplaced by a qualified elect ician.
Do not bend o modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufactu e to obtain a
eplacement.
Do not sha e an elect ical outlet with othe home o comme cial appliances that d aw la ge
amounts of elect icity; othe wise, unstable voltage might damage you compute , data, o attached
devices.
Some p oducts a e equipped with a th ee-p onged plug. This plug fits only into a g ounded
elect ical outlet. This is a safety featu e. Do not defeat this safety featu e by t ying to inse t it into a
non-g ounded outlet. If you cannot inse t the plug into the outlet, contact an elect ician fo an
app oved outlet adapte o to eplace the outlet with one that enables this safety featu e. Neve
ove load an elect ical outlet. The ove all system load should not exceed 80 pe cent of the b anch
ci cuit ating. Consult an elect ician fo mo e info mation if you have questions about powe loads
and b anch ci cuit atings.
Be su e that the powe outlet you a e using is p ope ly wi ed, easily accessible, and located close to
the equipment. Do not fully extend powe adapte cable in a way that will st ess the co ds.
Be su e that the powe outlet p ovides the co ect voltage and cu ent fo the p oduct you a e
installing.
Ca efully connect and disconnect the equipment f om the elect ical outlet.
Powe supply statement
DANGER
Neve emove the cove on a powe supply o any pa t that has the following label attached.
Haza dous voltage, cu ent, and ene gy levels a e p esent inside any component that has this label
attached. The e a e no se viceable pa ts inside these components. If you suspect a p oblem with
one of these pa ts, contact a se vice technician.

Exte nal devices
CAUTION:
Do not connect o disconnect any exte nal device cables othe than Unive sal Se ial Bus (USB) and
1394 cables while the compute powe is on; othe wise, you might damage you compute . To avoid
possible damage to attached devices, wait at least five seconds afte the compute is shut down to
disconnect exte nal devices.
Gene al batte y notice
DANGER
Batte ies supplied by Lenovo fo use with you p oduct have been tested fo compatibility and
should only be eplaced with app oved pa ts. A batte y othe than the one specified by Lenovo, o a
disassembled o modified batte y is not cove ed by the wa anty.
Batte y abuse o mishandling can cause ove heat, liquid leakage, o an explosion. To avoid possible
inju y, do the following:
• Do not open, dissemble, o se vice any batte y.
• Do not c ush o punctu e the batte y.
• Do not sho t-ci cuit the batte y, o expose it to wate o othe liquids.
• Keep the batte y away f om child en.
• Keep the batte y away f om fi e.
Stop using the batte y if it is damaged, o if you notice any discha ge o the buildup of fo eign
mate ials on the batte y leads.
Sto e the echa geable batte ies o p oducts containing the echa geable batte ies at oom
tempe atu e, cha ged to app oximately 30 to 50% of capacity. We ecommend that the batte ies be
cha ged about once pe yea to p event ove discha ge.
Do not put the batte y in t ash that is disposed of in landfills. When disposing of the batte y, comply
with local o dinances o egulations.
Notice fo built-in echa geable batte y
DANGER
Do not attempt to emove o eplace the built-in echa geable batte y. Replacement of the batte y
must be done by a Lenovo-autho ized epai facility o technician.
Only echa ge the batte y st ictly acco ding to inst uctions included in the p oduct documentation.
The Lenovo-autho ized epai facilities o technicians ecycle Lenovo batte ies acco ding to local
laws and egulations.

Heat and p oduct ventilation
DANGER
Compute s, ac powe adapte s, and many accesso ies can gene ate heat when tu ned on and when
batte ies a e cha ging. Notebook compute s can gene ate a significant amount of heat due to thei
compact size. Always follow these basic p ecautions:
• When you compute is tu ned on o the batte y is cha ging, the base, the palm est, and some
othe pa ts may become hot. Avoid keeping you hands, you lap, o any othe pa t of you body
in contact with a hot section of the compute fo any extended length of time. When you use the
keyboa d, avoid keeping you palms on the palm est fo a p olonged pe iod of time. You
compute gene ates some heat du ing no mal ope ation. The amount of heat depends on the
amount of system activity and the batte y cha ge level. Extended contact with you body, even
th ough clothing, could cause discomfo t o even a skin bu n. Pe iodically take b eaks f om using
the keyboa d by lifting you hands f om the palm est; and be ca eful not to use the keyboa d fo
any extended length of time.
• Do not ope ate you compute o cha ge the batte y nea flammable mate ials o in explosive
envi onments.
• Ventilation slots, fans and/o heat sinks a e p ovided with the p oduct fo safety, comfo t, and
eliable ope ation. These featu es might inadve tently become blocked by placing the p oduct on
a bed, sofa, ca pet, o othe flexible su face. Neve block, cove , o disable these featu es.
• When the ac powe adapte is connected to an elect ical outlet and you compute , it gene ates
heat. Do not place the adapte in contact with any pa t of you body while using it. Neve use the
ac powe adapte to wa m you body. Extended contact with you body, even th ough clothing,
may cause a skin bu n.
Fo you safety, always follow these basic p ecautions with you compute :
• Keep the cove closed wheneve the compute is plugged in.
• Regula ly inspect the outside of the compute fo dust accumulation.
• Remove dust f om vents and any pe fo ations in the bezel. Mo e f equent cleanings might be
equi ed fo compute s in dusty o high-t affic a eas.
• Do not est ict o block any ventilation openings.
• Do not ope ate you compute inside fu nitu e, as this might inc ease the isk of ove heating.
• Ai flow tempe atu es into the compute should not exceed 35°C (95°F).

Elect ical cu ent safety info mation
DANGER
Elect ic cu ent f om powe , telephone, and communication cables is haza dous.
To avoid a shock haza d:
• Do not use you compute du ing a lightning sto m.
• Do not connect o disconnect any cables o pe fo m installation, maintenance, o econfigu ation
of this p oduct du ing an elect ical sto m.
• Connect powe adapte to a p ope ly wi ed and g ounded elect ical outlet.
• Connect to p ope ly wi ed outlets any equipment that will be attached to this p oduct.
• Wheneve possible, use one hand only to connect o disconnect signal cables.
• Neve tu n on any equipment when the e is evidence of fi e, wate , o st uctu al damage.
• Disconnect the powe adapte and all the cables befo e you open the device cove s, unless
inst ucted othe wise in the installation and configu ation p ocedu es.
• Do not use you compute until all inte nal pa ts enclosu es a e fastened into place. Neve use
the compute when inte nal pa ts and ci cuits a e exposed.
DANGER
Connect and disconnect cables as desc ibed in the following p ocedu es when installing, moving,
o opening cove s on this p oduct o attached devices.
To connect:
1. Tu n eve ything OFF.
2. Fi st, attach all cables to devices.
3. Attach signal cables to connecto s.
4. Attach powe adapte to outlets.
5. Tu n devices ON.
To disconnect:
1. Tu n eve ything OFF.
2. Fi st, emove powe adapte f om outlets.
3. Remove signal cables f om connecto s.
4. Remove all cables f om devices.
The powe adapte must be disconnected f om the wall outlet o eceptacle befo e installing all
othe elect ical cables connected to the compute .
The powe adapte may be econnected to the wall outlet o eceptacle only afte all othe elect ical
cables have been connected to the compute .
Liquid c ystal display (LCD) notice
CAUTION:
The liquid c ystal display (LCD) is made of glass, and ough handling o d opping the compute can
cause the LCD to b eak. If the LCD b eaks and the inte nal fluid gets into you eyes o on you hands,
immediately wash the affected a eas with wate fo at least 15 minutes; if any symptoms a e p esent
afte washing, get medical ca e.

Note: For products with mercury-containing fluorescent lamps (for example, non-LED), the fluorescent lamp
in the liquid crystal display (LCD) contains mercury; dispose of according to local, state, or federal laws.
Using headphones o ea phones
Your computer has a combo audio connector that you can use for headphones (also called a headset) or
earphones.
CAUTION:
Excessive sound p essu e f om ea phones and headphones can cause hea ing loss. Adjustment of
the equalize to maximum inc eases the ea phone and headphone output voltage and the sound
p essu e level. The efo e, to p otect you hea ing, adjust the equalize to an app op iate level.
Excessive use of headphones or earphones for a long period of time at high volume can be dangerous if the
output of the headphone or earphone connectors do not comply with specifications of EN 50332-2. The
headphone output connector of your computer complies with EN 50332-2 Sub clause 7. This specification
limits the computer’s maximum wide band true RMS output voltage to 150 mV. To help protect against
hearing loss, ensure that the headphones or earphones you use also comply with EN 50332-2 (Clause 7
limits) for a wide band characteristic voltage of 75 mV. Using headphones that do not comply with EN 50332-
2 can be dangerous due to excessive sound pressure levels.
If your Lenovo computer came with headphones or earphones in the package, as a set, the combination of
the headphones or earphones and the computer already complies with the specifications of EN 50332-1. If
different headphones or earphones are used, ensure that they comply with EN 50332-1 (Clause 6.5
Limitation Values). Using headphones that do not comply with EN 50332-1 can be dangerous due to
excessive sound pressure levels.
Plastic bag notice
DANGER
Plastic bags can be dange ous. Keep plastic bags away f om babies and child en to avoid dange of
suffocation.
Glass pa ts notice
CAUTION:
Some pa ts of you p oduct may be made of glass. This glass could b eak if the p oduct is d opped on
a ha d su face o eceives a substantial impact. If glass b eaks, do not touch o attempt to emove it.
Stop using you p oduct until the glass is eplaced by t ained se vice pe sonnel.
Choking haza d notice

5 NFC touchpoint * (fo ThinkPad X1 Tablet): Near field communication (NFC) enables you to transfer data
from one device to another by touching them or putting them close together. See “Using NFC devices (for

6 Finge p int eade *: Use the fingerprint reader to log in to your computer by swiping your fingerprints
instead of entering the password. See “Using the fingerprint reader” on page 19.

compatible projector, external monitor, or high-definition television.

11 Base Module: The Base Module is detachable. If you need to install a feature-expansion module, remove
