IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
When using your telephone equipment, basic safety precautions should always be followed to
reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and personal injury, including the following:
1. Read and follow all instructions and warnings.
2. Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or
aerosol cleaners. Use a slightly dampened cloth only.
3. Do not use this product near water, for example, near a bathtub, wash bowl, kitchen sink,
or laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool.
4. Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand or table. The product may fall, causing
serious damage to itself.
5. Slots and openings in the cabinet and the back or bottom are provided for ventilation, to
protect it from overheating, these openings must not be blocked or covered. The openings
should never be blocked by placing the product on the bed, sofa, rug, or other similar
surface. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator, heat register or a
built-In installation such as a bookcase or cabinet unless proper ventilation is provided.
6. Never push objects of any kind into this product through cabinet slots as they may touch
dangerous voltage points or short out parts that could result in a risk of fire or electric
shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product.
7. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble this product, but take it to a
qualified serviceman, when some service or repair work is required. Opening or removing
covers may expose you to dangerous voltages or other risks. Incorrect re-assembly can
cause electric shock when the appliance is subsequently used.
8. Unplug this product from the wall outlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnel
under the following conditions:
A. When the cord or plug is damaged or frayed.
B. If liquid has been spilled Into the product.
C.
If
the product has been exposed to rain or water.
D. If the product does not operate normally by following the operating instructions. Adjust
only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions because improper
adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work

9. Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during an electrical storm. There may

14. Never touch unlnsulated telephone wires or terminals, unless the telephone line has been
disconnected at the network interface.

BATTERY SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
CAUTION: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE OR PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND
FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
1. Use only the following type and size of batteries: 4 size "AA" alkaline batteries (not
included).
2. Do not dispose the batteries into a fire. The cells may explode. Check with local codes
for possible special disposal instructions.
3. Do not open or mutilate the batteries. Released electrolyte is corrosive and may cause
damage to the eyes or skin. It may be toxic if swallowed.
4. Exercise care in handling batteries in order not to short the battery with conducting
materials such as rings, bracelets and keys. The battery or conductor may overheat
and cause burns.
5. Do not attempt to recharge the batteries that are used with this product. The batteries
may leak corrosive electrolyte or explode.
6. Do not attempt to rejuvenate the batteries identified for use with this product by heating
them. Sudden release of the battery electrolyte may cause burns or irritation to eyes
or skin.
7. All batteries should be replaced at the same time. Mixing fresh and discharged
batteries could increase internal cell pressure and rupture the discharged batteries.
8. When inserting batteries into this product, the proper polarity or direction must be
observed. Reverse insertion of batteries may result in the leakage or explosion.
9. Remove the batteries from this product if the product will not be used for a long period
of time (several months or more) since during this time the batteries could leak,
damaging the product.
10. Discard weak or dead batteries as soon as possible since they are more likely to leak
in the product. Batteries should be replaced when the display gets dim or ifthe Low
Battery Indicator shows.
11. Do not store this product in high temperature areas. Batteries that are stored in a
freezer or refrigerator for the purpose of extending shelf life should be protected from
condensation during storage and defrosting. Batteries should be stabilized at room
temperature prior to use after cold storage.
12. If this product does not operate normally, see TROUBLE SHOOTING on page 23.
If
you cannot resolve the problem, or if the product is damaged, refer to the LENOXX
WARRANTY INFORMATION on page 26. Opening or removing covers may expose

INTRODUCTION
Congratulations for purchasing a adltel telephone. Your new PH-548 Caller ID
Speakerphone has all the features of a 20 memory telephone plus hands-free dialing and call
answering.
Your PH-548 is an advanced telephone and will give you years of great service, you only have
to change the batteries when the display gets dim.
The Caller ID section shows you who is calling before you answer the phone, allows you to screen
calls or avoid harassing calls. It will also show you who called with the time and date even if you are
not at home.
Some of the features of your PH-548 are:
SPEAKERPHONE - Allows you to make or answer phone calls hands-free, so that you can type and
talk at the same time, or your whole family can take part in the conversation.
20 ONE-TOUCH SPEED DIAL BUTTONS - For quick dialing of frequently dialed numbers.

TING (Caller 10 service needs to be set up by your phone company) - see page 6 WHAT IS
CALLER ID?
CALLER ID CALL BACK - Calls back the phone number of a person who has called you on the
telephone.
HOLD BUTTON WITH LED INDICATOR - When a caller is placed on hold, your handset can be
hung up without disconnecting the call. The call can be resumed later. The HOLD LED
indicator lights steadily when a call is placed on hold.
LAST NUMBER REDIAL - Useful if line is busy - just get a new dial tone and press the Redial
button.
DELETE BUTTON - Allows you to delete one or all Caller ID messages. Also used to enter
Setup information.
REVIEW UP
&
DOWN BUTTONS - Allows you to easily scroll through all the incoming calls - new
calls or old calls.
NEW CALL / MESSAGE WAITING LED - The LED will flash with new calls and will turn off once
you have reviewed all your call records and waiting messages.
CALLER 10 MEMORY DIAL - Allows you to store and dial a phone number from Caller 10
memory automatically.
CLOCK DISPLAY - Current time and date of day will be displayed. The clock is automatically
set and adjusted by the incoming calling data which is provided by your telephone company
through subscription. Also you can set up the clock and date manually.
WALL OR'DESK USABLE - No special hardware needed, all cords and wall mount adaptor
included.
TONE/PULSE SWITCHABLE - Suitable for computerized call directing and phone-banking,
also works on older "Rotary" phone systems.
FULLY MODULAR JACKS - For easy plug-in installation.
HANDSET CLIP - If you decide to have your phone placed in the wall mount position, the
Handset Clip can be pulled out, turned around and reinserted so that it allows the Handset to
hang into the base.
VOLUME CONTROL - Controls the volume of the Speakerphone.
HEARING AID COMPATIBLE - Lets you use the telephone with hearing aids that have a T
(telephone) switch.
MULTI-LANGUAGE - Allows you to select English, French or Spanish as desired. This set has
been designed for easy, plug-in installation. However, household telephone wiring can vary
considerably. We suggest you carefully read this instruction manual before operating this set.
NOTE: FOR PROPER OPERATION, YOUR TELEPHONE REQUIRES 4 SIZE "AA" ALKALINE
BATTERIES (NOT INCLUDED).

INTRODUCTION
CAUTION:
This product is an electrical device and can be hazardous if immersed in water. To avoid
the possibility of electric shock, do not use it while in the bathtub or shower or when you are
wet. If you accidentally drop it into water, first unplug its cord from the modular jack, then
remove the equipment from the water.
Avoid using this telephone during electrical storms in your immediate area. Even though
your telephone company may be using protective measures to limit electrical surges from
entering your home, absolute protection from lightning is impossible.

is a service that identifies the
calling party before you answer a call. This
can be used to screen unwanted calls and
eliminate harassment from annoying calls.
How does Caller
10
work? When used with Caller
10
service. your PH'548
displays the name (if available). and the phone
number (if available) of the person calling before
you pick up your telephone (or using the
Speakerphone) from the second ring.
Who provides Caller
10
Service? Your local telephone company. However. not all
telephone companies provide Caller
10
service.
Please call your local telephone company to
confirm that the service is available.
How can I activate my Caller

There is an extra charge added to your monthly

WHAT IS CALLER 10
?
IMPORTANT

1. For the Caller
10
feature to operate, you must subscribe to Caller
10
service from your local
telephone company. Caller
10
is not yet available in all areas.
2. You must install 4 size "AA' alkaline batteries to power the Caller
10
display and prevent loss
of memory. These batteries should be changed when the display gets dim or ifthe Low Battery
Indicator shows in the display.
If you or your answering machine answers the phone before the second ring. no Caller
10
information will be displayed.
Your PH-548 will receive and display calls automatically. Using the
m
DELETE, mUp
and m DOWN buttons to manage the calls stored In memory.
Your PH-548 will store the 70 most recent calls. If more than 70 calls are received, the
oldest call(s) will be replaced. Review your calls regularly, and delete the calls you do not
need. Also write down the important names and numbers you received.
When new calls come in. between the first and the second ring, the caller's information
and "NEW· appears on the Display. The Call Counter shows the number of calls stored in
memory.
If you answer the new call, the caller's information will also be stored in the memory as an
old one. If you do not answer the call, 20 seconds after the caller hangs up, the NEW
CALL Indicator will flash. The display will show the total number of all calls and the new
calls.
When you review new calls by using the m VIEW button, the newest call will be
displayed first and only the word "NEW' shows on the Display. The Call Counter shows
the new call number.
After all new calls are reviewed. the NEW CALL Indicator and the word "NEW· will go off.
When you review calls by using the m UP or mOOWN button, the calls will show on the
Display for old calls, both words "NEW" and "CALL" will show for new calls. The Call
Counter shows the call number.

TELEPHONE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
GETT,ING STARTED
To install this phone, follow the summary below:
1. Install 4 size "AA" alkaline batteries and reset the phone if needed (make sure phone line
is not connected). see below and page 11 for details.
2. Connect the phone cords (both straight line cord and coiled handset cord). see page 8.
3. Set up the Caller ID to work in English (or French or Spanish if you prefer), see page 9.
4. Set up your home area code, see page 9 and 10.
5. Your phone is now set up and ready to use.
If
after doing the above, your phone does not work, disconnect the cords and follow the
instructions again as detailed below or call the Lenoxx Help Line at 1-800-315-5885.
INSTALLING BATTERIES
Before you connect the phone cords. follow these steps to install the batteries:
1. Insert a flat blade screwdriver into the battery door lock and open the battery door
(Fig. 1).
(Regulations require the battery door to be child resistant)
2. Insert 4 size "AA" alkaline batteries as shown inside the battery compartment (Fig. 2).
(The negative side (- ) of the battery touches the spring).
3. Replace the battery door and snap it shut (Fig. 3).

CAUTION:
1. Never mix fresh batteries with old ones.
2. Never mix carbon-zinc batteries with alkaline or nickel cadmium batteries.
3. Follow Battery Safety Instructions on page 2.
4. Do not use rechargeable batteries.
5. To ensure against stored or Caller
10
memory loss while resetting your phone or changlnll
batteries, we suggest you write down all the important numbers before doing above.
(This phone will retain numbers for at least 5 minutes without battery power)
6. Batteries should be replaced when the display gets dim or if Low Battery Indicator shows on
the display.
- Remove all cords from the phone.
- Follow the instructions in INSTALLING BATTERIES above.
NOTE: If you cannot setup your phone or if the Display is blank or erratic, you can roaul
your phone by inserting a pointed object like a straightened paper clip into Iho
small hole behind the Display marked RESET. This will also clear all memorlea

HANDSET
CONNECTING PHONE CORDS
This set is designed
to connect directly to
a modular jack.
If you have a 4-prong
style jack, simply use
a modular adaptor (not
included). COILED HANDSET CORD
STRAIGHT TELEPHONE CORD
(To Telephone Wall Jack)
1. Insert the modular plugs of the Coiled Handset Cord into the jack of the Handset and into
the jack on the SIDE of the Telephone Base (either end can be plugged in).
2. Insert the modular plugs of the Straight (not coiled) Cord into the modular jack at the
REAR of the Telephone Base (either end of the cord can be plugged in). The modular
plug at the other end of the telephone cord is for connection to the telephone line wall
jack.

Select the desired function of the tone ringer.
ON - Normal setting, the phone rings on incoming calls.
OFF - The tone ringer does not sound, for undisturbed privacy.
NOTE: If your Ringer Switch is in the OFF position, only this phone will not ring, other
phones in your home on the same line will still ring, and your Caller
10
will still function.
TONE IPULSE SWITCH
Select the type of dialing that you desire or that your telephone system requires.
TONE - The set will operate using tone dialing.
PULSE - The set will dial using rotary dial type pulses (clicking sound).
NOTE:
1
If
you are not sure which system you have, set the TONE / PULSE switch to the TONE position
and lift the Handset. When you get a dial tone, dial a number you are familiar with.
If
the dial
tone continues and your call does not go through, replace the Handset and move the switch to
the PULSE position. Then lift the Handset and dial the number again.
2 Lift the Handset to confirm that you have a dial tone. If you do not get a dial tone, please
review step 1.
If
you still do not get a dial tone, see TROUBLE SHOOTING on page 23.
:1 Even when your phone is set to PULSE service, this phone can be switched to temporary
TONE for access to services that require TONE signaling like phone-banking. Just press the

SETTING UP YOUR LANGUAGE, AREA CODE, TIME AND DATE
1. If you have {lot installed the batteries yet. please do so now. See page 7 for details.
2.
If
you do not set up the language or time, this phone will automatically set itself for English
(tJolllult language), and the time will be automatically set up by the phone company when
tho phone rings.
3 In order for the phone to call back a number displayed ..you need to set up your area code.

Set thlt phone to Setup mode by installing new batteries and pressing the CD DELETE
button first, then while holding down the CD DELETE button, press the CD DOWN button.
(If your phone cannot be setup this way, remove all 4 batteries for 5 minutes or see RESET
YOUR PHONE on page 11. and try this step again).

DISPLAY CONTRAST
The contrast of the Display can be adjusted with the Contrast Control located to the right of
the Display panel.
TO SET THE TIME AND DATE MANUALLY
If you want 10 set up the time manually, you may use the

DOWN button to
select the correct number and then the
m
DELETE button to confirm. This can only be done
in the Setup mode (to get into the Setup mode, press the CD DELETE button together with
the
m
DOWN button and hold for several seconds and enter the language and area code
first).
NOTE:
On receiving a cali, your phone will automatically reset the Date and Time to
synchronize with the date and time registered by the Central Office.
On completion of setting, your phone will display the setting time and date and the
messages "TOTAL
00
NEW
00".
Your PH·548 is now set up and your Caller 10 should work properly.
RESET YOUR PHONE
If you cannot set up your Caller 10 or if the display is blank or erratic or If the NEW CALL
Indicator stays on continuously, your phone may have received a pulse of abnormal voltage
from the phone line.
To reset your Caller 10, make sure the phone has hung up, use a painted object like a
straightened paper clip and stick It into the small hole behind the Display (marked RESET)
for
2
seconds. Your Display will return to Set up mode.
NOTE:
When doing Reset, all memory in the Caller 10 and telephone part and program-
ming will be iost. Please write down any important numbers before resetting the
phone.
SPECIAL HINTS:
1. Your PH·548 will display all call information and store them in the Caller
10
memory
between the first and second ring of the incoming call.
2.
If you have an answering machine on the line and it answers calls on the first ring, your
Caller ID information will not be shown. Ha-proqrarn your answering machine to answer
calls after the second ring.
3. Your PH·548 wilJ display up to 70 incoming calls. When the Caller 10 memory is full, it
will automatically delete the oldest calls in order to make room for the new ID numbers.
So please review your Caller ID messages regularly and delete the old calls that you do
not need.
4.
When a new call comes in, the Display will show the calling number and name (if
available). After 20 seconds, the NEW CALL Indicator will flash and the Display will
show "TOTAL 12 NEW 03", telling you the total number of calls (12) and new calls (3)
you received since your last call review.

WALL MOUNTING
Your PH-S48 can be mounted on a wall phone plate. If you do not have a modular wall phone
plate installed, please consult with your phone company or installer to get one, or see next
page for installation without a wall plate.

Handset Clip - When the phone is mounted on the wall, the Handset Clip must be adjusted
so it will hold the Handset.

WALL MOUNTING
WALL MOUNTING WITHOUT A MODULAR WALL PHONE PLATE
Follow these instructions to mount the phone on the wall without a wall jack:
1. Locate a wall stud. If it is possible to utilize a wall stud for mounting. dry wall expanders
or a similar type fastener is recommended. Consult your local hardware stores for details.
2. Drill 2 holes 3-15/16' (100 mm) apart.
3. Put a screw into each hole and leave 3/16" (5mm) of the head exposed to mount the
phone. we recommend you to buy #8 or #10 Pan head sheet metal screws,

4. Connect the straight cord to the phone and jack.

TELEPHONE OPERATION
RECEIVING CALLS AS A NORMAL TELEPHONE
When the phone rings twice:
1. Lift the Handset and speak into the mouth piece of the Handset.
2. To end the call, hang up the Handset. The display will return to Time and Date settings.
MAKING CALLS AS A NORMAL TELEPHONE
1. Select the desired dialing mode with the TONE

PULSE Switch (do this only the first time ,
during Installation).
2. Pick up the Handset to get a dial tone. The count up timer will start after a few seconds.
3. Dial your call.
4. To end the call, hang up the Handset. The display will return to Time and Date settings.
CALL WAITING
If you subscribe to call waiting service and you hear a beep during a conversation, press
the Hook Switch quickly to get the other party.
LAST NUMBER REDIAL

The last number you called can be redialed using the speakerphone or the normal telephone.
This is useful especially if the line is busy.
1. Get a new dial tone and press the Redial button.
2. To get a new dial tone, press the Speakerphone button or hang up the phone for 2
seconds. Then press the Redial button. This phone will remember the last number dialed
even overnight. If you do not want anyone to know which number you dialed last, pick up
the phone and press any number.
PAUSE FUNCTION
(Example: In an office where you need to dial a 9 first), dial the number 9 and press Redial, and
then dial the phone number. You will see a •

displayed for Pause. You may also store this
into memory.
HANDS-fREE (SPEAKERPHONE) OPERATION
ANSWERING CALLS WITH THE SPEAKERPHONE
1. After the phone rings twice, press the Speakerphone button, the Speakerphone Indicator

It
is not necessary to lift the Handset. We recommend you to wait for the second
ring bofore pressing the Speakerphone button.
2. The display will show the Count Up Call Timer and it will start after a few seconds.
3. Adjust tho Speakerphone volume j:)y sliding the Volume Control on the side of the phone.
4. To end the call, press the Speakerphone button again.
5. The Speakerphone Indicator will go off and the display will return to Time and Date settings.
MAKING CALLS WITH THE SPEAKERPHONE
1. Press Iha Speakerphone button to get a dial tone - no need to lift the handset.
2. The Speakerphone Indicator will light and the Count Up Timer will start after a few seconds.
3. Adjust the Speakerphone volume by sliding the Volume Control on the side of the phone.
4. Dial your call.

6. The Speakerphone Indicator will go off and the display will return to Time and Date settings.

TELEPHONE OPERATION
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR HANDS-FREE (SPEAKERPHONE) OPERATION
1. Be sure to notify the other party that you are using the Speakerphone, the other party may
not wish anyone else to hear the conversation. To switch from the Speakerphone to the
Handset, just lift the Handset.
2.
If
a squealing or whistling sound is heard. reduce the volume setting.
If
you start your
conversation with the Handset and you want to switch to the Speakerphone mode, press
the Speakerphone button and replace the Handset.
3.
Remember to hang up by pressing the Speakerphone button at the end of the
conversation.
4. If it is difficult to transmit because of a high background noise level in the other party's
environment or telephone line noise, lower the volume level.
5. In order for the Caller ID to work properly, do not press the Speakerphone button before the
second ring.
NOTE: When storing memory numbers, your phone must have batteries installed (see
INSTALLING BATTERIES on page

HOLD BUTTON
Your phone has a HOLD button which allows you to put any call on hold.
1.
Press the Hold button and the Hold Indicator will light. (When Hold is on, the other party
cannot hear your conversation)
2.
You may pick up the Handset to end the Hold function, or press the Speakerphone button
or pick up any phone in any rfom on that line.
TEMPORARY TONE DIALING
Temporary tone dialing is used only when you have Pulse (rotary) service. It allows you to
access to services that require tone signaling, including some Tone-Activated Computer Sys-
tems or phone-banking.
To change from Pulse (rotary) to Tone dialing during a call, do the following:
1.
Dial a pho~umber in PULSE (TONE IPULSE Switch at PULSE position).
2.
Press the

TONE button, all buttons pressed after this will send only tone signals to the
computer or phone-banking system.
3.
After you hang up, the phone automatically returns to Pulse (rotary) service.
MEMORY DIALING
Your PH-548 has 20 One-Touch Memory buttons (from M1 to M20) which allows you to store
frequently dialed numbers into memory. With the push of one button. the number will be dialed
automatically. This is especially useful for long-distance numbers.

TELEPHONE OPERATION
To store telephone numbers into memory, simply follow the Instructions below:
EXAMPLE:
Suppose you want to store 1-800-555-1212 into M18, you should:
1. Without lifting the Handset. Press the STORE button. The display will show

TELEPHONE OPERATION
NOTES:
1. Write the emergency numbers into the Memory Index Card in the rare case that your
memory feature loses the number. Lenoxx Electronics Corp. assumes no responsibility for
customer's reliance on this feature.
2. If you move your phone to another room or disconnect the phone line, your stored numbers
will remain in the memory for a short time. so quickly re-connect it to the new jack or you
might have to re-program the phone.
3. When storing or testing emergency numbers (like
911),
if the operator comes on, tell him or
her you are programming or testing a phone and you do not have an emergency. Otherwise
they might dispatch the police to your location.
4. You may program a Pause into memory. For example. if you need to dial a "g" to get an
outside line: Press STORE first, then press 9 and the REDfAL button (a
P
will show) and
the number you want to dial, and finally press the Memory button (the REDIAL button puts
a pause into the number when pressed).
MAKING CALLS FROM THE 20 ONE-TOUCH MEMORY
Follow the instructions below to dial a number from the one-touch memory:
1.
Get a dial tone (by lifting the Handset or pressing the Speakerphone button).
2. Press one of the 20 Memory buttons marked M1 through M20.
3. The number will be displayed ,and your call will be dialed exactly as you programmed.
NOTE: Memory dialing will only work If you first program your numbers.

1. Slide out the Memory Index Card from under the phone.
2. Write names or numbers on the Memory Index Card (better in pencil so that you can
change them later).
