spilled, makesure the areaisdrybefore startingthe engine.
HotExhaust
lThe muffler becomesveryhotduringoperation and remainshotforawhileafter
stoppingtheengine.Becarefulnottotouchthe muffler whileitishot.Letthe engine
coolbefore storingit indoors.
lTopreventfire hazardsandtoprovideadequateventilation for stationaryequipment
applications,keeptheengineatleast3feet(1meter) awayfrombuilding wallsand
other equipmentduringoperation.Donot placeflammableobjectsclosetotheengine.

Fuel ValveLever
Thefuelvalveopensand closesthe passage betweenthefueltankandthe carburetor.
Thefuelvalvelevermust be intheONpositionforthe enginetorun.
When theengineisnotinuse,leavethe fuelvalvelever intheOFF positiontoprevent
carburetor floodingand toreducethe possibilityoffuelleakage.
ThrottleLever
Thethrottlelever controlsengineTHROTTLELEVERspeed.
Movingthe throttlelever inthe directionsshownmakestheenginerunfaster orslower.
EngineSwitch
Theengine switchenablesanddisablesthe ignitionsystem.
Theengine switchmust be intheONposition forthe enginetorun.

ISYOURENGINE READYTOGO?
For your safety,and tomaximizethe servicelifeofyour equipment,itisveryimportantto
takeafewmomentsbefore you operatethe enginetocheckitscondition. Besuretotake
careofanyproblemyou find,orhaveyour servicingdealercorrectit,beforeyouoperate
the engine.
Improperlymaintainingthisengine,
orfailingtocorrect aproblem
beforeoperation, couldcausea
malfunction inwhichyou couldbe
seriouslyinjured.
Always performapreoperation
inspection beforeeachoperation,
andcorrect anyproblem.
Before beginningyourpreoperationchecks,besurethe engine islevelandtheengine
switchisinthe OFF position.
ChecktheGeneralConditionoftheEngine
lLookaround andunderneaththeenginefor signsof oilor gasoline leaks.
lRemoveanyexcessivedirtordebris,especiallyaround themufflerandrecoilstarter.
lLookfor signsofdamage.
lCheckthatallshieldsandcoversareinplace,andallnuts,bolts,andscrewsare
tightened.
ChecktheEngine
Checktheengine oillevel.Runningthe enginewithalowoil levelcancauseengine
damage.
TheOil Alertsystem(applicableengine types)willautomaticallystoptheengine before the
oillevelfallsbelowsafelimits.However,toavoidtheinconvenienceofanunexpected
shutdown, alwayscheck the engine oillevelbefore startup.
Checktheairfilter.Adirtyairfilterwill restrictairflowtothecarburetor,reducing engine
performance.
Checkthe fuellevel.Starting withafull tankwillhelptoeliminateor reduceoperating
interruptionsfor refueling.

SAFE OPERATINGPRECAUTIONS
Before operatingthe engine for thefirsttime,pleasereviewthe IMPORTANTSAFETY
INFORMATION and thechapter titled BEFORE OPERATION.
Carbon monoxide gasistoxic.
Breathingit can cause
unconsciousness andevenkillyou.
Avoidanyareasor actionsthat
exposeyoutocarbonmonoxide.
Reviewthe instructionsprovidedwiththeequipment poweredbythisengine foranysafety
precautionsthatshouldbeobserved inconjunction withenginestartup,shutdown,or
operation.
STARTINGTHEENGINE
1.MovethefuelvalvelevertotheONposition.
2.Tostartacoldengine,movethe chokelevertotheCLOSE position.
Torestartawarmengine, leavethe chokelever inthe OPENposition.

3.Movethethrottleleverawayfromthe SLOWposition,about1/3ofthewaytowardthe
FASTposition.

4.Turn theengine switchtothe ONposition.
5.Operatethestarter.

Pull thestartergriplightlyuntilyoufeelresistance,then pullbriskly.

Return thestarter gripgently.
6.If the chokeleverhasbeenmovedtothe CLOSEposition tostart the engine, gradually
moveit tothe OPENposition asthe enginewarmsup.
STOPPINGTHE ENGINE
Tostopthe engineinan emergency,simplyturnthe engineswitchtotheOFF position.
Undernormalconditions,usethe followingprocedure.
1.Movethe throttlelevertotheSLOWposition.

Occasionallyyoumayhearalight ‘‘sparkknock or ‘‘pinging (metallicrappingnoise) while
operating under heavyloads.Thisisnocausefor concern.
Ifsparkknockorpingingoccursatasteadyengine speed,undernormalload,changebrandsof
gasoline.If sparkknockor pingingpersists,seean authorizedservicingdealer.
Runningtheenginewithpersistentsparkknockor pingingcancauseenginedamage.

3. Iftheoillevelislow,fill tothe edge oftheoil fillerholewiththe recommended oil.

Runningtheengine withalowoil levelcancauseenginedamage.
TheOilAlertsystem(applicableenginetypes) will automaticallystoptheenginebefore
theoil levelfallsbelowsafelimit. However, toavoidtheinconvenienceofanunexpected
shutdown,alwayschecktheengineoillevelbeforestartup.
ENGINE OILCHANGE
Draintheused oil whilethe engineiswarm.Warmoildrainsquicklyandcompletely.
1.Placeasuitablecontainerbelowtheenginetocatchtheusedoil,and then removethefiller
cap/dipstick andthedrainplug.
2.Allowthe used oiltodraincompletely,and then reinstallthe drainplug,andtightenitsecurely.
Pleasedisposeofusedmotor oil inamannerthatiscompatiblewiththeenvironment.We
suggestyou takeusedoilinasealedcontainer toyour localrecyclingcenter or service
stationfor reclamation.Donotthrowitinthetrash;pour itontheground;ordownadrain.
3.Withtheengine inalevelposition,fill totheouter edgeofthe oilfillerholewiththe
recommendedoil.
