USE RIGHT TOOL. Don't force small tool or attachment to do the job of a

use circular saw for cutting tree limbs or logs.
DRESS PROPERLY. Don't wear loose clothing orjewelry. They can be caught
in moving parts. Rubber gloves and non-skid footwear are recommended
when working outdoors. Wear protective hair covering to containlonghair.
USE SAFETY GLASSES. Also use face or dust mask
if cutting operation is
dusty.
DON'T ABUSE CORD. Nevercarry toolby cord or yank
it todisconnect from
receptacle. Keep cord from heat, oil, and sharp edges.
SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise to hold work. It's safer than using
your hand and
it frees both hands to operate tool.
DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp and clean for better and
safer performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing acces-
sories. Inspecttool cords periodicallyand
if damaged, haverepaired by autho-
rized service facility. Inspect extension cords periodically and replace
if
damaged. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.

14. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form habit of checking to
see that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from toolbeforeturning
it on.
15. AVOID UNINTENTIONALSTARTING. Don’t carry tool
with finger onswitch.

16. OUTDOOR USEEXTENSIONCORDS. When tool is usedoutdoors, use only

17. STAY ALERT. Watch what you are doing, use common sense. Don’t operate

18. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before further use of the tool, a guard or other
part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that
it will
operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for alignment of
moving parts, bindingof moving parts, breakageof parts, mounting, and any
other conditions that may affect its operation. A guard or other part that
is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized serv-
ice center unless otherwise indicated elsewhere inthis instruction manual.
Have defective switches replaced by authorized service center. Don’t use
tool
if switch does not turn it on and off.
19. GUARD AGAINST ELECTRIC SHOCK. Prevent body contact with grounded
surfaces. For example; pipes, radiators, ranges, refrigerator enclosures.
20. REPLACEMENT PARTS. When servicing, useonly identicalreplacementparts.
21, POLARIZEDPLUGS. To reduce the risk of electric shock, this equipment has
a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug
will fit in a
polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not
fit fully in the outlet,
reversethe plug.
If it stilldoes not fit, contacta qualified electriciantoinstall
the proper outlet.
Do not change the plug in any way.
VOLTAGE WARNING: Before connecting the toolto a power source (receptacle,
outlet, etc.) be sure the voltage supplied is the same as that specified on the
nameplate of the tool. A power source with voltage greater than that specified
for the tool can result in SERIOUS INJURY to the user
- as well as damage to
the tool. If in doubt, DO NOT PLUG IN THE TOOL. Using a power source with
voltage less than the nameplate rating is harmful to the motor.

A battery short can cause a large current flow, overheating, possible burns
and even a breakdown.
7. Do not leave the battery exposed todirect sunlight. Do notstorethe battery

8. The Makita battery 122contains a strong electrolyte (dilute sulfuric acid).
Do not apply undue force to the battery, drop or strike
it. Do not attempt
to disassemble or make modifications to the battery.
9. If the battery breaks open andelectrolyte (dilutesulfuric acid)contacts skin
or clothing, wash immediately
with running water. If electrolyte gets into
your eyes, rinsethem out
with clear water and seek medicalattention right
away.
IO. As the battery service life ends, itscapacity and operation time decrease.

1. The Makita charger Model DC122 is specifically designed to charge only
the Makita battery 121 or
122. Do not attempt tocharge any other battery
with this charger.
2. Handle the charger carefully. Do not drop or strike it.
3. Never carry the charger by cord or yank it to disconnect from receptacle.
4. Keep cord from heat, oil, chemicals, and sharp edges.

Charging
Connect the battery tothe charger using the adaptor cord. Then plugthe charger into the
power source. The charging light will illuminate and charging will begin. When the charg-
ing light goes out
at a certain time, the charging is complete. Unplugthecharger.

If the Makita battery 122 has not been used for longperiods, charge
it for more than the
time specifiedinthe table above. (Example: If
it has not been used for six months, charge
it for approx. one week.) Charging continues even after the charging light goes out. Ifthe
battery
is left uncharged for more than six months, it may become unchargeable. Ifthe
light does not come on within five minutes after you start the charging, the battery may
be unchargeable. Ship or take the charger and the battery to your nearest Makita Service
Center or Distributor for checking.

Installingor removing the drillbit
CAUTION
:
Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the batterv is disconnectedfrom the tool
before installingor removingthe bit.
To install the bit, place it in the chuck as
far as it will go. Tighten the chuck by hand.
Place the chuck key in each
of the three
holes and tighten clockwise. Be
sure to
tighten all three chuck holes evenly.
To remove the bit, turn the chuck key
counterclockwise in just one hole, then
loosenthe chuck by hand.
After usingthe chuck key, be sure to return
it to the original position
Switch action
To start the tool, simply pull the trigger. Tool speed is increased by increasingpressure on
the trigger.
Release the trigger to stop.
CAUTION
:
Before connecting the battery to the tool, always check to see that the switch trigger
actuatesproperly and returns to the
"OFF" positionwhen released.
Reversing switch action
This tool has
a reversing switch to change
the direction of rotation. Move the revers-
ing switch lever to the right for clockwise
rotation or to the left for counterclockwise
rotation.

CAUTION :
Always check the direction of rotation before operation.
*The reversingswitch lever cannot be moved while the trigger
is pulled.
Use the reversing switch only after the tool comes to complete stop. Changing the
direction of rotationbefore the tool stops may damage the tool.

Connectingthe battery to the tool
Connect the battery to the tool usingthe adaptor cord. To prevent the adaptor cord from
being accidentally disconnected, hook the cord to the strain relief hook on the battery.

Hook the battery to your waist belt. Ifthe

When drilling in wood, best results are obtainedwith wood drills equippedwith
a guide
screw, The guide screw makes drilling easier by pulling the bit into the workpiece.
0 Drillingin metal
To preventthe bit from slippingwhen starting
a hole, make an indentation with a center-
punch and hammer
at the point to be drilled. Place the point of the bit inthe indenta-
tion and start drilling.
Use a cutting lubricant when drilling metals. The exceptions are
ironand brass which should be drilled dry.
CAUTION
:
0 Pressingexcessively on the tool will not speed up the drilling. Infact, this excessive pres-
sure will only serve to damage the tip of your bit, decrease the tool performance and
shortenthe service life
of the tool.
.There
is a tremendous force exerted on the tool/bit at the time of hole breakthrough.
Hold the tool firmly and exertcare when the bit beginsto break through the workpiece.
0 A stuck bit can be removed simply by settingthe reversing switchto reverse rotationin
orderto back out. However,the tool may back out abruptly if you do not hold
it firmly.
Always secure small workpieces in a vise or similar hold-downdevice.

Screwdriving operation
Place
the point of the driver bit in the screw head and apply pressure to the tool. Start
the tool slowly and then increase the speed gradually. Release the switch trigger just
as
the screw bottoms out. The electric brake will then stop the tool immediately, preventing
the screw and/or bit from beingdamaged.

Recycling the battery
The only way to dispose of a Makita battery is
to recycle it. The law prohibits any other
method
of disposal.
To recycle the battery:
1) Remove belt from the battery
2) Ship or take battery to your nearest Makita Factory Service Center or Distributor that
sells Makita lead batteries.
(Call your nearest Makita Service Center or Distributor to determine the location that
provides Makita lead battery recycling. See your local Yellow pages under
”Tools -
Electric”. Pleasenotethat insomestates a batterythat hasreachedtheend of lifeneeds
to be provided at the time you purchase a new lead battery or else a deposit will be
