INFORMATION FOR USERS
concerning the terms of the National Legislation enforcing the Directive 2012/19/EU on waste
electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
The wheelie bin symbol with a cross through it on the equipment or its packaging indicates that the product
must be disposed of separately from other waste materials at the end of its working life.
If the user wishes to dispose of this equipment, he/she must do so in accordance with the applicable
National regulations governing the separation of the unit into its waste materials at the end of its working
life.
Separating waste materials correctly before submitting the equipment for recycling, treatment and
environmentally compatible disposal can help to prevent potentially negative effects on health and the
environment, as well as making it easier to reuse and/or recycle its constituent materials.
Failure to dispose of this product in accordance with these indications is punishable in accordance with the

1.
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1
Foreword
The P3UP is designed and constructed to be installed in machines such as grinders as a machining control
accessory.
The P3UP must be installed in accordance with the instructions provided in this manual and shall not
conform to the European standards and directives listed on page 2 unless these conditions are fulfilled.
Any modification that alters the P3UP construction specifications, whether mechanical or electrical, can only
be performed by Marposs that will certify the compliance with the safety standards. Any modification or
maintenance not indicated in this document shall be considered unauthorised.
Marposs declines all responsibility in case of any non-compliance with the above.
The descriptions and illustrations attached to this document are not binding. Marposs reserves the right to
modify the product as and when necessary, in order to improve performance, or for any other reason, and
without the obligation to update this document.
This document may not be reproduced or transmitted, either wholly or partially, in any form or medium
without Marposs’ permission.
Legal action will be taken against any transgressors.

the Marposs equipment in your possession.

INSTALLATION, USE AND MAINTENANCE ABOUT THE CONTENT OF THIS MANUAL
The description given in this manual is addressed to the following categories of persons:
•Marposs personnel or personnel of the manufacturer of the machine tool that will house the P3UP
(henceforth the client) who will install the equipment directly.
•Technical personnel of the final user (henceforth the user) that will operate directly with the Marposs
equipment.
•User’s technical Personnel responsible for the maintenance of the production line in which the P3UP is
installed.
This manual is an integrant part of the equipment so the user must keep it in good state and available for the
whole life of the equipment.
Marposs’ responsibility is limited to the correct use of the P3UP, as defined in this manual and its
attachments.
Marposs shall give this manual and its attachments to the customer.
Preparations to be made by the customer.
The Customer must:
•Correctly secure and locate the P3UP on its own machine.
•Carry out the electric connections.
•Setup the P3UP.
The user must
•Program the P3UP.
•Perform the routine and extraordinary maintenance operations.

1.4
Testing and warranty
Material defects are covered by the warranty with the following limitations:
•GUARANTEE PERIOD: the warranty covers the product and all repairs carried out within the standard
warranty terms.
•SUBJECT OF THE GUARANTEE: the warranty applies to the product and its parts marked with the
serial number or other identification number used by Marposs.
The above warranty applies unless other agreements are reached between Marposs and the Customer.

Consultation method
The manual uses a specific typographical method. Various safety warnings have been defined.
1.7.1
Key to symbols
WARNING
This warning indicates the possibility of damage to the electronic unit and for other devices that
it is connected to, or the possibility of losing data.
ATTENTION
This warning indicates conditions of risk for the operator or the technician.
ELECTRIC SHOCK RISK
Electric shock hazards
may be present when carrying out fault finding routines on live
components.
FIRE OR EXPLOSION RISK
The P3UP cannot be used in location with the risk of explosion and/or fire (the P3UP
is not
certified pursuant to directive 94/9/EC ATEX).
DANGER OF CRUSHING
Proceed with caution when moving or handling the P3UP.
DANGER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Recycle and/or dispose pursuant to the applicable standards in the destination country.

Smoking is prohibited while installing the unit.

Identification plates
The identification plate is positioned on the rear of the P3UP:
the plate indicates the Marposs product identification code (MODEL), the serial number (SERIAL No.) of the
individual P3upand the CE marking.
Warnings:
a) Never remove the plate from the original position selected by Marposs;
b) do not modify or alter any of the technical details indicates on it;
c) do not clean the plate with sharp objects (e.g.: iron brushes), which may make the data illegible.
d) When requesting technical assistance, always quote the data indicated on the plate

If a data plate is damaged or even partially illegible due to wear, ask MARPOSS for another one,
quoting the data in these instructions or on the original data plate.

2.
SAFETIES
2.1
General safety information
2.1.1
Reference European Community Directives
The P3UP has been designed and manufactured in accordance with the directives indicated on page 2.
The P3UP must be managed by a grinder type machine used to machine mechanical parts, in compliance
with the applicable safety standards in the user’s country in terms of machinery equipment
2.1.2
Product conformity
The P3UP described in this document has been designed and manufactured to be installed in an industrial
plant.
WARNING
Any modification that alters the P3UP design and/or manufacturing specifications may only be
implemented by Marposs, who shall be responsible for certifying compliance with the safety
standards.
Therefore the modifications or maintenance interventions not set out in this document shall be
considered unauthorised.
Marposs declines all responsibility in case of any non-compliance with the above.
2.1.3
Selecting the operator
2.1.3.1 Definition of the operator
The R.E.S.S. 1.1.1 “Definitions” of attachment I of machinery directive 2006/42/EC, defines the operator as
the person or persons assigned to install, operate, adjust, clean, repair and move a machine or to repair it.
2.1.3.2 State of health of the operator/installer
The operator assigned to install the P3UP must be aware and responsible of the dangers that may be
generated during the installation of machining equipment.

2.1.4
Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
The operators assigned to assemble and maintenance of the P3UP must use the following personal
protection equipment:
Gauge assembly operator:

Gauge/final machinery operating operator:
The operator does not require particular PPE, apart from that required in the work environment, to operate
the gauge. Other specific information can be found in the manual of the final machine that the gauge will be
fitted in.

The operator must use only PPE that complies with the applicable directives of the relative countries.
IMPORTANT
In order to guarantee the complete safety of the operator this list is not exhaustive. The operator
must integrate the obligatory personal protection equipment in the production environment (plant)
and assigned by the employer.

2.1.5
General information
2.1.5.1 Operator's position
The P3UP is designed and constructed to interlock with a machine, of which it becomes to all intents and
purposes, a sub-assembly.
Therefore refer to the final machine that the P3UP will be installed in for the operator’s position during all the
various operation processes, in particular during production and maintenance.
2.1.5.2 Operator's tasks
The operator assigned to the installation must:
1. lift, transport and store the P3UP;
2. assemble and adjust the P3UP;
3. remove the P3UP.
The operator’s tasks during normal work:
•No operator interventions are required while the P3UP is operating: For more information see the final
machine’s manual.
The operator assigned to the maintenance must:
1. perform routine maintenance;
2. perform extraordinary maintenance;
3. signal unexpected situations (e.g. wear, failures, breakages, errors, etc.) not set out in this
document and therefore generated by unforeseen causes.

2.1.5.3 Training
THE FINAL MACHINE DOCUMENTATION MUST BE READ
The training of the operators assigned to the normal operation must follow the inst
ructions set
out in the documentation of the final machine that the P3UP is fitted in, as this documentation
cannot be exhaustive.
The following categories of people require training:
1. operators assigned to transport, store and install the gauge, in order to:
•In order to ensure they are aware of the appropriate lifting and transport methods used for the parts
of the arm, as stipulated by Marposs, in order to prevent the risks associated with moving loads;
•Ensure they are aware of the correct storage procedures for the parts of the P3UP in order to
prevent damaging important parts, not only in terms of safety but also from an operational point of
view;
•Ensure they are aware of the correct P3UP installation procedures, such as wiring the electrical
parts, in order to prevent assembly errors that could generate dangerous situations for the health
and safety of the operators.
2. operators assigned to supervise the normal operation of the P3UP, in order to:
•Ensure they adhere to the applicable regulations governing the use of the product, and that they
read and following the instructions and other information provided in the attached documentation.
3. operators assigned to the maintenance of the P3UP, in order to:
•Ensure they are aware of the correct procedures for carrying out scheduled and unscheduled
maintenances activities on the P3UP.
2.1.5.4 Procedures
Before performing any operation with the P3UP described in these instructions, the Operator must check that
all safety conditions are met in order to prevent accidents.
In order to avoid hazardous situations, the operator must read section 2 of this document carefully.

2.2
P3UP Safety information
2.2.1
Authorised and unauthorised usage.
2.2.1.1 Authorised usage
The P3UP has been designed and built to be installed on automatic machines such as grinders in order to
manage the Marposs measurement heads used for in-process part dimension controls.

Any use that differs from the use described above is considered unintended.
Any modification altering the P3UP in terms of safety and risk prevention may only be made by
the Marposs, which will certify equipment compliance with safety standards.
Therefore modifications or maintenance interventions not set out in this technical document shall
be deemed unauthorised.
Marposs declines all responsibility in case of any non-compliance with the above.
2.2.1.2 Unauthorised usage
Do not use the P3UP:
1. in environments with the risk of explosion or fire;
2. in environments where contaminants such as acids, corrosive gases, salts etc. are present (see
para. 4.1.1.1 and 4.1.1.6;
3. In environments where the P3UP may be exposed to radiation such as microwaves, ultraviolet rays,
lasers, X rays, etc. - see para. 4.1.1.7
Never:
4. modify the original P3UP settings;
5. connect the P3UP to power supplies having specifications that differ from those described in this
manual;
6. Use components for uses not set out by Marposs.

2.2.2
Risks, protection, warnings and cautions
2.2.2.1 Residual risks
Electrical wiring
ELECTRIC SHOCK RISK
When looking for faults with live parts there is the risk of electric shock caused by the direct or
indirect contact (suitable clothing must be used).
It is important to remember that incorrect actions by the operator can generate residual risks.
Due to the type of construction it is not possible to guarantee absolute safety against risks and dangers
generated by:
•Operator carelessness,
•Non-compliance with the information and indications contained in these instructions,
•Deliberately tampering with the P3UP and/or its safety devices,
•Tampering with the fixed and movable safety panels.

3.
SHIPPING AND STORAGE
3.1
General Warnings
3.1.1
Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
The operators assigned to the transport, storage and installation of the P3UP must be provided with and use
the PPE indicated in section 0, as well as the obligatory PPE for the environment that the P3UP is used in.
3.1.2
Training
The operators assigned to the transport, storage and installation of the P3UP must be trained and informed
as required by the applicable directives in the respective countries.
3.1.3
State of the work equipment
To perform the transport, storage and installation operations the operators must use the equipment listed in
the relevant sections.
The work equipment must be in a good state, especially in terms of wear, age and fatigue.
The equipment must be selected based on the legal requirements in terms of work equipment and must be
used in compliance with the manufacturer's requirements.
3.1.4
Moving loads
When moving loads the operators must pay the utmost attention in order to avoid dangerous movements that
could generate dangerous situations for themselves and for the people exposed in the danger zone.
The movement operations must be performed in compliance with the instructions of the lifting equipment
used.
3.1.5
Receiving the material
During packing all the P3UP's technical material is thoroughly checked in order to avoid shipping damaged
material.
When unpacking the material check that the P3UP is perfectly intact and is not damaged: if it is contact
Marposs immediately.

3.2
Packing, movement, transport
3.2.1
Packing
The P3UP is protected with carton and an internal insert for the movement and transport operations.
3.2.2
Moving the package
The package can be lifted manually as set out by the general health and safety standards in the work place
for manually moving loads, especially when lifting a load from the ground.
3.2.3
Transporting the package
The package containing the P3UP must be transported with covered transport equipment to prevent
exposing the package and the P3UP to atmospheric agents.
3.2.4
Disposing of the packing material
The packaging used for the P3UP consists of materials that are not dangerous, in terms of disposal, for
people, animals or materials.
The operators assigned to disposal must bear in mind that the packaging consists of:
•Carton: external container and internal insert
•Polyurethane film: internal insert.
DANGER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
The polyurethane film is NOT biodegradable. Do not dispose of
it in the surrounding
environment: recycle and/or dispose in compliance with the applicable standards in the
destination country.
3.3
Storage
3.3.1
General Information
The mechanical and electronic components installed in the P3UP have been selected based on their
reliability and resistance. The components comply with the applicable construction requirements in terms of
safety and have been designed to support transport and storage temperatures between -20 °C and +60 °C (-
4° F
÷
140° F).
3.3.2
Storing the P3UP
The P3UP must be stored in covered premises with limited exposure to dust and humidity.
The warehouse flooring must be horizontal and free of irregularities.
Do not position other materials, even light items, on top of the P3UP package or the P3UP itself, in order to
avoid damaging it.

4.
INSTALLATION
4.1
General Information
Before starting the P3UP installation operations the operator must ensure that all the normal mechanical
workshop equipment is available.
NO SMOKING
During the assembly operations, operators must not handle foreign or dangerous objects, as
their hands must be free to react rapidly.
For this reason smoking is prohibited while installing the unit.
4.1.1
Environmental conditions
Upon installation the operator must check that the final machine has been designed and constructed to
operate in the environmental conditions set out below.
4.1.1.1 Type of environment
The P3UP and the relative electrical components have been designed and constructed to be installed in an
industrial plant and to be used only in closed environments where they cannot be subject to atmospheric
agents.
Unless indicated otherwise in the contract the P3UP can operate regularly only in the environmental
conditions set out below. Environmental conditions that differ from the ones indicated could cause failures or
breakages and generate dangerous situations for the health and safety of the operators and people
exposed.
4.1.1.2 Explosion and/or fire
DANGER OF EXPLOSION AND/OR FIRE
P3UP does not satisfy the requirements of the 94/9/EC (ATEX) directive.
The product has not been designed and manufactured to be operated in environments where

4.1.1.3 Environment air temperature
The mechanical and electrical components can operate correctly at an air temperature between +5 and + 40
°C (41 and 40.00 °C).
4.1.1.4 Humidity
The mechanical and electrical components are designed to operate correctly at a maximum relative humidity
level of 80% and temperatures of up to 31°C (87.8°F), decreasing linearly to a relative humidity level of 50%
at a temperature of 40°C (104°F).
4.1.1.5 Altitude
The electrical components are designed to operate correctly up to 2000 metres above sea level.

4.1.1.6 Contaminating agents
The electrical components have been adequately protected against the infiltration of solid and liquid bodies
for the intended use of the P3UP and the environment that the P3UP is used in.
Unless otherwise stated in the contract, the electrical components DO NOT have specific protections against
contaminating agents such as dust, liquids, acids, corrosive gases, salt, etc.
If using electrical components and the complete equipment in environments subject to such contaminating
agents contact Marposs immediately. Marposs will check the suitability of the assembly based on the
environments they are used in.
4.1.1.7 Ionizing and non-ionizing radiation
The electrical components DO NOT additional protections against radiation such as microwaves, ultraviolet
rays, laser or X-rays.
If the P3UP is exposed to radiation, additional measures must be implemented to prevent to incorrect
operation of the components and their early deterioration.
4.1.1.8 Lighting of a 'normal' environment
The installation operations must be performed in ‘normal’ light conditions, so that the operator is not dazzled
or the operator must not strain his eyesight with poor lighting.
The P3UP installers must comply with the minimum requirements set out by the applicable laws in the
respective countries in terms of natural and artificial lighting of the premises.
If there is poor lighting in the work place the operator must use portable lighting equipment.
4.1.1.9 Removing the P3UP from its packaging
Marposs has not stipulated and special equipment to be used when removing the P3UP from its packaging.
The operator must proceed carefully and avoid carrying out any actions that might damage the P3UP or any
of its components.
ATTENTION
Handle with care: Static sensitive components.
Before acces
sing the front panel, operators must make sure they have eliminated any
accumulated electrostatic charges by touching a metallic surface that is connected to the
building earth system.

5.
GENERAL EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION
The P3UP connected to the Marposs measurement heads can be used to check the dimensions of the part
in the machine and display the state of the machining process. The value of the measurement during the
grinding process is compared with the pre-defined stock metal values, thus providing the machine with the
signals it requires in order to control the progress of the grinding wheel. The P3UP and Marposs measuring
heads input protection ratings mean that they are suitable for use in a workshop environment.
