Your safety and the safety of others is extremely important in the installation, use and servicing of this water heater.
Many safety-related messages and instructions have been provided in this manual and on your own water heater to warn you and
others of a potential injury hazard. Read and obey all safety messages and instructions throughout this manual. It is very
important that the meaning of each safety message is understood by you and others who install, use or service this water heater.
All safety messages will generally tell you about the type of hazard, what can happen if you do not follow the safety message and
how to avoid the risk of injury.

1. Read the“SafetyPrecautions” section,page3 ofthismanual first
andthenthe entiremanualcarefully. If youdon’tfollow thesafety
rules, the water heater will not operate properly. It could cause
DEATH,SERIOUSBODILYINJURYAND/ORPROPERTYDAMAGE.
Thismanualcontainsinstructionsfor theinstallation,operation, and
maintenanceofthe gas-firedwaterheater. Italsocontainswarnings
throughout the manual that you must read and be aware of. All
warningsandall instructionsare essential tothe properoperation
ofthewaterheaterandyoursafety. Sincewecannotputeverything
on the first few pages, READ THE ENTIRE MANUAL BEFORE
ATTEMPTINGTOINSTALLOROPERATETHEWATERHEATER.

HOTTERWATERCANSCALD:
Water heaters are intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a
temperature which will satisfy space heating, clothes washing, dish
washing,andother sanitizingneeds canscaldand permanentlyinjure
youuponcontact. Somepeoplearemorelikelytobepermanentlyinjured
byhotwaterthanothers. Theseincludetheelderly,children,theinfirm,or
physically/mentallyhandicapped. Ifanyoneusinghotwaterinyourhome
fits into one of these groups or if there is a local code or province law
requiringacertaintemperaturewateratthehotwatertap,thenyou must
takespecialprecautions.Inadditiontousingthelowestpossibletemperature
setting that satisfies your hot water needs, a means such as a *Mixing
Valve, shallbeused atthehot watertapsusedby thesepeopleoratthe
waterheater. Mixingvalvesareavailableatplumbingsupplyorhardware
stores.Consult Maytag Customer Service (1-800-788-8899). Follow
mixing valve manufacturer’s instructions for installation of the valves.
Before changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read the
“TemperatureRegulation”sectioninthismanual,seeFigure26.

1. Turn“OFF”thegassupplytothewater
heater.
If the main gas line Shut-off valve
servingallgasappliancesisused,also
shut“OFF” thegasateachappliance.
Leave all gas appliances shut “OFF”
until the water heater installation is
completed,see Figures3and4.
2. Turn “OFF” the water supply to the
water heater at the water shut off
valve or water meter. Some
installationsrequirethat thewater be
turned off to the entire house, see
Figures3 and5.

3. Check again to make sure the gas supply is “OFF” to the water
heater. Then disconnect the gas supply connection from the gas
controlvalve.
4. Attach ahose tothe waterheaterdrain
valve and put the other end in a floor
drain or outdoors. Open the water
heaterdrain valve. Openanearby hot
water faucet which will relieve
pressureinthewater heaterandspeed
draining.The waterpassingoutofthe
drainvalvemay beextremelyhot. To
avoid being scalded, make sure all
connectionsaretightandthatthewater
flowis directedawayfrom anyperson,
seeFigures 3and6. FIGURE6.
5. Disconnecttheventpipefromtheblowerassembly whereitconnects
tothewaterheater. Inmostinstallationsthe ventpipecanbelifted off
after any screw or other attached devices are removed. Make sure
existingvent complieswithmaximum andminimumvent lengthson
page18.
6. If youhave copperpiping tothe waterheater,the twocopper water
pipes can be cut with a hacksaw approximately four inches away
fromwhere theyconnect tothe waterheater,see Figure7.This will
avoidcutting offpipestoo short.Additional cutscanbe madelaterif
necessary.Disconnect thetemperature-pressure reliefvalve drain
line.Whenthewaterheateris drained,disconnectthehosefromthe
drainvalve.Closethedrainvalve.Thewaterheaterisnowcompletely
disconnectedand readyto beremoved.

If you have galvanized pipes to the water heater, loosen the two
galvanizedpipes withapipewrenchattheunion ineach line. Also
disconnectthepiping remainingto the waterheater,seeFigure 8.
These pieces should be saved since they may be needed when
reconnectingthenew waterheater. Disconnectthe temperature-
pressurereliefvalve drainline. When the waterheater isdrained,
disconnect the hose from the drain valve. Close the drain valve.
Thewaterheater isnow completelydisconnectedand readyto be
removed.Mineralbuilduporsedimentmay haveaccumulatedinthe
oldwater heater. This causesthe waterheater tobe muchheavier
thannormal andthis residue,if spilledout, couldcause staining.

FACTSTOCONSIDERABOUT THE LOCATION
Carefullychoose anindoorlocationforthe newwaterheater,because
the placement is a very important consideration for the safety of the
occupantsinthebuildingandforthemosteconomicaluseoftheappliance.
This water heater is not for use in manufactured (mobile) homes
or outdoor installation.
Whetherreplacing anoldwaterheaterorputtingthe waterheater ina
newlocation, thefollowingcriticalpointsmust beobserved:
1. Selectalocationindoorsascloseaspractical totheventterminalor
locationtowhichthewaterheaterventpipingisgoingtobeconnected,
andas centralizedwith thewaterpipingsystemas possible.
2. Selected location must provide adequate clearances for servicing
andproper operationofthewaterheater.
Installationofthe waterheatermustbe accomplishedinsucha manner
that if the tank or any connections should leak, the flow will not cause
damagetothe structure. Forthisreason,it isnotadvisableto installthe
waterheater inan atticorupperfloor. Whensuch locationscannotbe
avoided,asuitabledrainpanshouldbeinstalledunderthewaterheater.
Drainpansareavailableatyourlocalhardwarestore. Suchadrainpan
musthaveaminimumlengthandwidthofatleast2"(5.1cm)greaterthan
thewater heaterdimensions andmust bepipedtoanadequate drain.
Thepanmust notrestrictcombustionairflow.
Water heater life depends upon water quality, water pressure and the
environment in which the water heater is installed. Water heaters are
sometimesinstalled inlocations whereleakagemayresultin property
damage, even with the use of a drain pan piped to a drain. However,
unanticipateddamagecanbereducedorpreventedbyaleakdetectoror
watershut-offdeviceusedinconjunctionwithapipeddrain pan.These
devices are available from some plumbing supply wholesalers and
retailers,and detectandreacttoleakage invarious ways:
• Sensorsmounted inthedrain panthattriggeranalarmorturnoff the
incomingwater tothewaterheaterwhen leakageis detected.
• Sensorsmountedinthedrainpan thatturnoff thewatersupplytothe
entirehome whenwaterisdetectedin thedrainpan.
• Water supply shut-off devices that activate based on the water
pressure differential between the cold water and hot water pipes
connectedto thewaterheater.
• Devicesthat willturnoff thegassupply toagaswaterheaterwhileat
thesame timeshutting offitswatersupply.
INSTALLATIONSINAREASWHEREFLAMMABLELIQUIDS(VAPORS)
ARELIKELYTOBEPRESENTORSTORED(GARAGES,STORAGEAND
UTILITYAREAS,ETC.):Flammableliquids(suchasgasoline,solvents,
propane(LPor butane,etc.)andother substances(suchasadhesives,
etc.) emit flammable vapors which can be ignited by a gas water
heater’s hot surface igniter or main burner. The resulting flashback
andfirecan causedeath orserious burnstoanyone inthe area.This
waterheater isequippedwithaFV sensorfor detectingthe presence
of flammable vapors, see Figure 9. When the sensor detects those
vapors,theunit will shutdown and notoperate. Should thishappen,
pleasereferto thetroubleshootingguideonpages29-30. Eventhough
thiswater heateris aflammable vaporsignition resistantwaterheater
and is designed to reduce the chances of flammable vapors being
ignited, gasoline and other flammable substances should never be
stored or used in the same vicinity or area containing a gas water
heateror otheropen flameor sparkproducing appliance.

Also, the water heater must be located and/or protected so it is not
subjectto physicaldamage bya movingvehicle.
Thiswaterheater mustnotbeinstalleddirectlyoncarpeting. Carpeting
must be protected by metal or wood panel beneath the appliance
extendingbeyond thefullwidthanddepthofthe applianceby atleast
3"(7.6 cm)in anydirection, oriftheapplianceisinstalledinanalcove
orcloset,theentirefloormust becoveredby thepanel. Failureto heed
thiswarningmay resultina fire hazard.
Minimum clearances between the water heater and combustible
constructionare0inchatthesidesandrear,5"(12.7 cm)fromthefront
