INTRODUCTION
The E475 is a ligh weigh , class AB amplifier, designed o he same high s andards of
reliabili y and sound quali y ha our cus omers have come o expec of all MC
2
produc s.
Proprie ary curren driven ou pu s ages give excep ional ransien response and a resonan
swi chmode power supply wi h a large reservoir gives ex remely high peak power wi hou any
“bass sag”.
Op ical limi ers keep mains inpu and ou pu curren s wi hin a safe opera ing area a all
imes, whils main aining ransparen sonic performance.
The amplifier fea ures au oma ic impedance sensing and changes he power accordingly and
coupled wi h user swi chable Power Reduc ion Con rol, allows differen speaker loads o be
more safely connec ed o each channel.
This enables he amplifier o drive he high vol age swings associa ed wi h speaker
impedances of 8 Ohms and above, bu au oma ically swi ches o a high curren /medium
vol age ou pu required by 4 Ohm loads.

reasons, THE EARTH LEAD SHOULD NOT BE
DISCONNECTED IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

should have free exposure o he air (i.e. in a rack leave
he fron and rear doors off), wi h 2cm air gap a he
sides and op. IF AIR IS NOT ALLOWED TO ESCAPE
FROM THE REAR, OVER-HEATING WILL OCCUR. Take
care when moun ing o her equipmen in he same rack.

pole of he mains supply, herefore for uni s wi h a
de achable cord o be fully disconnec ed from he
mains, he mains disconnec device (ie mains plug or
mains coupler) should remain readily operable. For

The amplifier has been manufac ured o comply wi h your local power supply requiremen s,
bu before connec ing he uni o he supply, ensure ha he vol age (prin ed on he rear
panel) is correc .
The amplifier is fi ed wi h ei her a 100/120V or 220/240V apped ransformer according o
cus omer requiremen s.
Make sure power ou le s conform o he power requiremen s lis ed on he back of he uni .
Damage caused by connec ing o improper AC vol age is no covered by he warran y.
SAFETY WARNING
Where a MAINS plug or appliance coupler is used as he disconnec device, i should remain
readily operable.
Where he amplifier is moun ed in a rack and permanen ly connec ed o he mains, hen he
rack should be ins alled wi h a readily accessible connec or or an ALL POLE circui breaker
wi h 3mm breaking dis ances.

The wiring colours are:
230V AREAS: EARTH = GREEN AND YELLOW 120V AREAS: EARTH = GREEN
NEUTRAL = BLUE NEUTRAL = WHITE
LIVE = BROWN LIVE = BLACK
DO NOT USE THE UNIT IF THE ELECTRICAL POWER CORD IS FRAYED OR BROKEN. The
power supply cords should be rou ed so ha hey are no likely o be walked on or pinched by
i ems placed upon or agains hem, paying par icular a en ion o cords and plugs and he
poin where hey exi from he appliance.
ALWAYS OPERATE THE UNIT WITH THE AC GROUND WIRE CONNECTED TO THE ELECTRICAL
SYSTEM GROUND. Precau ions should be aken so ha he means of grounding of a piece of
equipmen is no defea ed.
DO NOT REMOVE THE LID. Removing he lid will expose you o po en ially dangerous
vol ages. There are no user serviceable par s inside.

To ensure ha his equipmen performs o specifica ion, i should be moun ed in a sui able
rack or enclosure as described below. Like all high power amplifiers, i should be kep away
from o her equipmen which is sensi ive o magne ic fields. Also, his amplifier may suffer a
subs an ial reduc ion in performance if i is subjec ed o, or moun ed close o equipmen
which radia es high RF fields.

THE FRONT PANEL IS NOT CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING THE UNIT ON ITS OWN.
Make sure ha he rear of he uni is adequa ely suppor ed. The bracke s which are supplied
fi s andard 19 inch (483mm) rack moun ing sys ems.
ENSURE THERE IS ADEQUATE VENTILATION.

Ins alling Your Amplifier: RF Emissions
The high frequency resonan conver ers in he E Series amplifiers have been designed o have
very low radio frequency (RF) emissions; however even hese low level emissions can cause
in erference wi h o her equipmen .
In order for his o be minimised, he amplifier should be moun ed in a me al rack enclosure,
which should have a separa e ( echnical) Ear h. Al erna ively a separa e ear h should be
a ached o he amplifier a he rear rack moun ing bracke .

Connec ing To Your Amplifier: Inpu s
Im ortant Note: All E475 am lifiers before serial number 7E70004 have a different wiring
configuration for the in ut and out ut sockets. This will only affect the am lifier when
o erating in linked or bridged modes.
The inpu s are made via 3-pin XLR connec ors, which are elec ronically balanced and should
be connec ed via a high grade win core screened cable, as follows:
PIN1: Screen (see no e)
PIN2: Ho (signal +)
PIN3: Cold (signal -)
The amplifier is designed o opera e wi h fully balanced equipmen - loss of performance
may be experienced if connec ed o unbalanced sources. If i is unavoidable, however, he
following wiring should be used. The cable should s ill be win core plus screen.
PIN1: Screen - connec ed o he chassis of he unbalanced equipmen - or lef disconnec ed
a he unbalanced end.
PIN2: Ho (signal +)
PIN3: Cold (ground 0V)
NOTE: This amplifier is wired o he la es indus ry recommenda ions. PIN1 is connec ed
direc ly o he chassis/mains ear h. If ground loops (mains hum) are encoun ered, remove he
screen connec ion from he o her end of he cable and leave i open circui . If problems
persis , consul your dealer/supplier.
DO NOT TAMPER WITH OR ALTER ANY GROUND (EARTH) CONNECTIONS INSIDE THE
AMPLIFIER.
For bridged opera ion, inpu should be made o channel A (or C) only and he rear panel
“Channel Link” swi ch pressed IN (A&B, or C&D) o feed his signal o bo h appropria e inpu s.

Connec ing To Your Amplifier: Speaker Ou pu s
The speaker ou pu s are via Neu rik Speakon connec ors. 2 pole (NL2FC) or 4 pole (NL4FC)
connec ors can be used.
Pin 1+: Ho
Pin 1-: Cold
Addi ionally Channel A Speakon connec or carries Channel B ou pu on Pins +2 & -2 o allow
easy bi-amping or bridged opera ion using a single NL4 connec or. Similarly, Channel C’s
Speakon connec or also carries Channel D ou pu .
Out ut Connector A
Pin 2+: Ho Ch. B
Pin 2-: Cold Ch. B
Out ut Connector C
Pin 2+: Ho Ch. D
Pin 2-: Cold Ch. D
For bi-amped opera ion, connec as above.
There must be no shared connections between channels.
Negative out ut terminals must not be joined together as they are not both at ground
otential. Connecting them together will damage the am lifier and void the warranty!
As he curren s involved are very high, and o ensure bes performance, he speaker cables
should be kep as shor as possible and conform o he following minimum requiremen s:
E475, 14A in o 4 Ohm speaker loads.
When opera ing he amplifier in o loads of less han 4 Ohms, be aware ha he curren
capaci y of he speaker cables will need o be increased as described above.
Use all four poles of he connec ors when driving 2 Ohm loads.
Do no connec he inpu s/ou pu s o any o her vol age source such as a ba ery, mains source
or power supply, regardless of whe her he amplifier is urned on or off.
Do no run he ou pu of any amplifier channel back in o ano her channel’s inpu and do no
parallel or series-connec an amplifier ou pu wi h any o her amplifier ou pu .

Connec ing To Your Amplifier: Bridged (Mono) Opera ion
Pairs of channels may be independen ly bridged — channel pair A&B, and/or channel pair
C&D.
The me hod is he same for bo h channel pairs:
Supply signal o Channel A or C inpu only and push in he appropria e rear panel swi ch
marked “LINK A&B” or “LINK C&D”.
Use Channel A or C’s Ou pu Speakon connec or and connec as follows:
Pin 2+: Ho
Pin 1-: Cold
When opera ing in bridged mode, he minimum impedances are doubled.
The minimum load in bridged mode is 8 ohms.

presence of a mains supply when he power swi ch is OFF.
3: Signal Me ers: These LED bar graphs show ins an aneous level on each channel o
indica e proximi y o he limi er hreshold. No e ha if he PRC sys em is in opera ion on
ei her channel, his will affec he readou shown on he respec ive me er.
The red LED in he me er (Limi indica or) will illumina e when he limi er hreshold has been
reached and limi ing is occurring. The ou pu curren moni or may ac iva e o limi he ou pu
curren of he amplifier channel - his can occur even if he amplifier has no reached clipping
poin .
The Limi indica or can opera e independen ly of he bar graph me er. Typical condi ions ha
may rigger he ou pu curren moni or circui ry would be very low load impedance, or high
subsonic or VHF levels.
4: A enua ion Con rols: These are analogue con rols allowing precise level se ings. No e
ha when channels are linked using he rear panel link swi ches, some con rols may be
inac ive - see page NN for de ails.
5: PRC LED: This illumina es if he Power Reduc ion Con rol has been enabled on he
respec ive channel pair, ei her manually via he swi ches on he rear panel or au oma ically
via he impedance sensing circui . See page NN for de ails of swi ch se ings.
6: A/P (Au o Pro ec ) LED: If a condi ion exis s, ei her in ernally or ex ernally, ha could
cause damage o ei her he amplifier or he speakers, he pro ec ion circui will disengage he
ou pu s and he A/P LED will illumina e. The amplifier will con inue o be moni ored and
depending on he ype of faul , will ei her rese af er he faul has cleared, or require manual
rese ing by swi ching off a he mains swi ch and hen on again af er a few seconds.

Typical condi ions ha could cause he pro ec ion o be riggered include very high frequency
or subsonic inpu signals, DC in he inpu s, shor -circui ed ou pu s, or in ernal high
empera ures.

Tempera ure rela ed faul s will rese if he uni has cooled sufficien ly.
Ou pu shor circui s ( his can affec jus one channel) will require manual rese af er clearing
he faul .
Opera ing Your Amplifier: No es and Swi ching On
Read all documen a ion before opera ing your equipmen and re ain all documen a ion for
fu ure reference.
Do no spill wa er or o her liquids in o or on he uni and do no opera e he uni while
s anding in liquid.
Do no block fan in ake or rear ven ila ion ou le s or opera e he uni in an environmen ha
could impede he free flow of air around he uni .
If he uni is used in an ex remely dus y or smoky environmen , i should be cleaned of any
collec ed debris a regular in ervals. Please also see he no es regarding main enance on
page NN.
I is impor an ha he power ou pu of your amplifier is ma ched o he power handling
capaci y of your loudspeaker. If no , damage o he loudspeaker could occur.
Swi ching On…
A ‘swi ch-on’ he pro ec ion circui will ini ially ac iva e whils he circui s s abilise, indica ed
by he red A/P LED illumina ing, in addi ion o various o her LEDs. Af er a few seconds he red
A/P LED will ex inguish indica ing a sa isfac ory working condi ion.
O her LEDs may remain illumina ed depending upon rear panel swi ch se ings and inpu
connec ions. If he A/P LED does no ex inguish af er 5 seconds he uni may be faul y or
some ex ernal connec ions may be incorrec or inappropria e. If his occurs you should power
down he uni and remove all ex ernal connec ions (excep for he mains power supply) and
repea he power up sequence. If he problem persis s please con ac us — de ails on page
NN.

Looking Af er Your Amplifier: Main enance
These main enance ins ruc ions are for use by qualified personnel only. Before any rou ine
main enance, please ensure ha your amplifier is disconnec ed from he mains supply!
The fil er behind he air in ake aper ures on he fron of your amplifier should be cleaned or
replaced periodically, e.g. 3 -6 mon hs. (Fil ers in amplifiers loca ed in more 'dir y'
a mospheres may require more frequen main enance).
The fil er should be 'dry' cleaned, using a vacuum cleaner preferably. Running he uni
wi hou a fil er is no recommended. We recommend replacemen of fil ers every 2-3 years,
depending on usage. Replacemen fil er ma erial is available direc ly from us.
If he fan ven s on he rear of he amplifier develop a build-up of dus /debris on he finger
guards, hey can be cleaned wi h a dry pain brush and a vacuum cleaner.
The casework of he amplifier may be cleaned wi h a ligh ly dampened clo h — do no use any
solven s as hey will damage he pain finish and could remove prin ing.
If you have any doub s abou carrying ou main enance, please refer o a service engineer or
con ac your local dealer.

Adjus men is by moving a link on he op inpu PCB — one link for each channel.
The gain may be se o 32dB (fac ory defaul ), 26dB or 31dB.
Remember, se ing higher gain does no change he maximum available power bu changes
he level of signal inpu o achieve maximum power. In any case, provided ha he inpu
signal is less han 20dBu/7.7V, he buil -in limi er circui will preven dis or ion wi hin he
amplifier.
