INTRODUCTION
Designed for use in he bes s udio moni oring environmen , bu equally a home in any
applica ion where ransparency and “no compromise“ performance are he focus,
he HS Series amplifiers deliver he sound quali y and reliabili y expec ed from MC
2
.
These amplifiers u ilise he bes complimen ary AB bipolar ou pu s ages, combined
wi h he unique MC
2
curren driven floa ing drive s age along wi h analogue level con rols for
minimal signal degrada ion.
Sophis ica ed “side-chain” limi ers preven dis or ion and speaker damage, bu are ou -of-
circui un il he onse of clipping so do no compromise he signal pa h under normal working
condi ions. A bespoke high fideli y shielded oroidal power supply combined wi h in elligen
low noise fan con rol provide op imum condi ions for he ou pu s ages, ensuring he only
hing you will ever hear is your sound.
Cri ical par s have been selec ed hrough a series of lis ening es s for op imum sonic
performance and approved by some of he mos well respec ed personnel in he indus ry.
The amplifiers of course include full DC, hermal and shor circui pro ec ion o ensure
rouble-free service.

Where he amplifier is moun ed in a rack and

This uni is fi ed wi h a 3-wire power cord. For safe y
reasons, THE EARTH LEAD SHOULD NOT BE
DISCONNECTED IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

should have free exposure o he air (i.e. in a rack leave

FROM THE REAR, OVER-HEATING WILL OCCUR. Take
care when moun ing o her equipmen in he same rack.

de achable cord o be fully disconnec ed from he
mains, he mains disconnec device (ie mains plug or
mains coupler) should remain readily operable. For

The amplifier has been manufac ured o comply wi h your local power supply requiremen s,
bu before connec ing he uni o he supply, ensure ha he vol age (prin ed on he rear
panel) is correc .
The amplifier is fi ed wi h ei her a 100/120V or 220/240V apped ransformer according o
cus omer requiremen s.
Make sure power ou le s conform o he power requiremen s lis ed on he back of he uni .
Damage caused by connec ing o improper AC vol age is no covered by he warran y.
SAFETY WARNING
Where a MAINS plug or appliance coupler is used as he disconnec device, i should remain
readily operable.
Where he amplifier is moun ed in a rack and permanen ly connec ed o he mains, hen he
rack should be ins alled wi h a readily accessible connec or or an ALL POLE circui breaker

230V AREAS: EARTH = GREEN AND YELLOW 120V AREAS: EARTH = GREEN
NEUTRAL = BLUE NEUTRAL = WHITE
LIVE = BROWN LIVE = BLACK
DO NOT USE THE UNIT IF THE ELECTRICAL POWER CORD IS FRAYED OR BROKEN. The
power supply cords should be rou ed so ha hey are no likely o be walked on or pinched by
i ems placed upon or agains hem, paying par icular a en ion o cords and plugs and he
poin where hey exi from he appliance.
ALWAYS OPERATE THE UNIT WITH THE AC GROUND WIRE CONNECTED TO THE ELECTRICAL
SYSTEM GROUND. Precau ions should be aken so ha he means of grounding of a piece of
equipmen is no defea ed.
DO NOT REMOVE THE LID. Removing he lid will expose you o po en ially dangerous
vol ages. There are no user serviceable par s inside.

To ensure ha his equipmen performs o specifica ion, i should be moun ed in a sui able
rack or enclosure as described below. Like all high power amplifiers, i should be kep away
from o her equipmen which is sensi ive o magne ic fields. Also, his amplifier may suffer a
subs an ial reduc ion in performance if i is subjec ed o, or moun ed close o equipmen
which radia es high RF fields.

THE FRONT PANEL IS NOT CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING THE UNIT ON ITS OWN.
Make sure ha he rear of he uni is adequa ely suppor ed. The bracke s which are supplied
fi s andard 19 inch (483mm) rack moun ing sys ems.
ENSURE THERE IS ADEQUATE VENTILATION.

Connec ing To Your Amplifier: Inpu s and Link Ou s
Inpu s and Links - The inpu and link ou pu s are made via 3-pin XLR connec ors, which are
elec ronically balanced and should be connec ed via a high grade win core screened cable,
as follows:
PIN1: Screen (see no e)
PIN2: Ho (signal +)
PIN3: Cold (signal -)
The amplifier is designed o opera e wi h fully balanced equipmen and ground loops or loss
of performance may be experienced if connec ed o unbalanced sources. If i is unavoidable
however, he following wiring should be used. The cable should s ill be win core plus screen.
PIN1: Screen - connec ed o he chassis of he unbalanced equipmen - or lef disconnec ed
a he unbalanced end.
PIN2: Ho (signal +)
PIN3: Cold (ground 0V)
NOTE: This amplifier is wired o he la es indus ry recommenda ions. PIN1 is connec ed
direc ly o he chassis/mains ear h. If ground loops (mains hum) are encoun ered remove he
screen connec ion from he o her end of he cable and leave i open circui . If problems
persis , consul your dealer/supplier.
DO NOT TAMPER WITH OR ALTER ANY GROUND (EARTH) CONNECTIONS INSIDE THE
AMPLIFIER.
For bridged opera ion inpu should be made o channel A only and he rear panel swi ch se
for bridged mode.
For link ou pu s he following wiring should be used:
PIN1: Screen (see no e)
PIN2: Ho (signal +)
PIN3: Cold (signal -)
No e ha link ou pu s are purely passive and are hardwired across he inpu s, so will
con inue o func ion even if he amplifier is urned off.

Connec ing To Your Amplifier: Speaker Ou pu s
The speaker ou pu s are via binding pos s which are also capable of aking 4mm banana
plugs. Always use cable capable of handling he curren s of he amplifier. Thin cables will no
only resul in power loss and audio quali y degrada ion, bu could cause a fire risk
There must be no shared connections between channels.
As he curren s involved are very high, and o ensure bes performance, he speaker cables
should be kep as shor as possible and conform o he following minimum requiremen s:
HS800, 12A in o 4 Ohm speaker loads
HS1400, 16A in o 4 Ohm speaker loads
Do no connec he inpu s/ou pu s o any o her vol age source such as a ba ery, mains source
or power supply, regardless of whe her he amplifier is urned on or off.
Do no run he ou pu of any amplifier channel back in o ano her channel’s inpu and do no
parallel or series-connec an amplifier ou pu wi h any o her amplifier ou pu .
Connec ing To Your Amplifier: Bridged (Mono) Opera ion
Al hough bridged mode is possible (in o 8 ohm loads or grea er) i is no recommended due o
he inheren quali y reduc ion associa ed wi h bridged use of any amplifier.
Supply signal o Channel A inpu only and push in he rear panel swi ch marked “Bridged
Mono”.
Use channel B +ve ou pu and channel A —ve ou pu erminals, and connec as follows:
Ch. B +: Ho
Ch. A-: Cold
When opera ing in bridged mode, he minimum impedances are doubled.
The minimum load in bridged mode is 8 Ohms.

1: Limi LEDs: The amplifiers incorpora e signal limi ers, which are prese o preven
clipping wi h high levels of drive. The amber LEDs on he fron panel illumina e o indica e
opera ion of he limi ers.
2: Signal LEDs: These are ac ive from a minimum ou pu level of approxima ely 10 Wa s and
are an indica ion only of signal presence.
3: A enua ion Con rols: These are analogue con rols allowing precise level se ings. No e
ha in ‘BRIDGED’ mode only ‘channel A’ con rol is ac ive.
4: Pro ec LED: If he ou pu s are shor ed or if DC is presen , he pro ec ion circui will
disengage he ou pu s and he Pro ec LED will illumina e. The amplifier will con inue o be
moni ored and depending on he ype of faul , will ei her rese af er he faul has cleared or
require manual rese ing by swi ching off a he mains swi ch and hen on again af er a few
seconds.
Tempera ure rela ed faul s will rese if he uni has cooled sufficien ly.
Ou pu shor circui s will require manual rese af er clearing he faul .
5: Bridge LED: This indica es he posi ion of he swi ch on he rear panel and is illumina ed
when bridged mode is selec ed wi h he swi ch pressed in.
6: Power LED: This indica es when he amplifier is ac ive — his does NOT indica e he
presence of a mains supply when he power swi ch is OFF.
7: Power Swi ch: This single pole swi ch urns he amplifier fully off (bu does no isola e i
from he mains supply).

fu ure reference.

If he uni is used in an ex remely dus y or smoky environmen , i should be cleaned of any
collec ed debris a regular in ervals. Please also see he no es regarding main enance on
page 15.

A ‘swi ch-on’ he pro ec ion circui will ini ially ac iva e whils he circui s s abilise.
Assuming no faul s are de ec ed af er a few seconds only he Power LED (and Signal
indica ors if signal is applied) will illumina e.

1: Fan ou le s: The variable speed fans suck air in hrough he fron ven s and ou hrough
he back of he amplifier. Please see main enance on page 15 for recommenda ions on how
o clean hese and he fron foam sec ions.
2: Link ou XLR socke s: These are passively connec ed direc ly o heir respec ive inpu s o
allow for parallel inpu connec ions o o her amplifiers. As such, hey will func ion even if he
amplifier is urned off.
3: Inpu XLR socke s: Connec signal inpu s o hese socke s, wired pin 2 ho , 3 cold, 1
ground. For sensi ivi y and impedance of hese inpu s, please see he specifica ions on page
16. When running in bridged (mono) mode, only inpu A is used.
4: Bridged (Mono) swi ch: Depress his swi ch o run he amplifier in bridged mode. No e
ha he ou pu mus be aken from channel B and channel A’s binding pos s as marked on
he rear panel.
5: Channel A ou pu binding pos s: Connec speaker wi h ei her bare wires or 4mm banana
plugs. (No e ha in bridged mode, he nega ive erminal only is used for he “cold" side of he
load. No connec ion is made o he posi ive erminal in bridged mode.)
6: Channel B ou pu binding pos s: Connec speaker wi h ei her bare wires or 4mm banana
plugs. (No e ha in bridged mode, he posi ive erminal only is used for he “ho " side of he
load. No connec ion is made o he nega ive erminal in bridged mode.)

Looking Af er Your Amplifier: Main enance
These main enance ins ruc ions are for use by qualified personnel only. Before any rou ine
main enance, please ensure ha your amplifier is disconnec ed from he mains supply!
The fil er behind he air in ake aper ures on he fron of your amplifier should be cleaned or
replaced periodically, e.g. 3 -6 mon hs. (Fil ers in amplifiers loca ed in more 'dir y'
a mospheres may require more frequen main enance).
The fil er should be 'dry' cleaned, using a vacuum cleaner preferably. Running he uni
wi hou a fil er is no recommended. We recommend replacemen of fil ers every 2-3 years,
depending on usage. Replacemen fil er ma erial is available direc ly from us.
If he fan ven s on he rear of he amplifier develop a build-up of dus /debris on he finger
guards, hey can be cleaned wi h a dry pain brush and a vacuum cleaner.
The casework of he amplifier may be cleaned wi h a ligh ly dampened clo h — do no use any
solven s as hey will damage he pain finish and could remove prin ing.
If you have any doub s abou carrying ou main enance, please refer o a service engineer or
con ac your local dealer.
