CHAPTER 1
Overview
The ENV-230 is a convenient multipurpose sound generator that is able to produce three
different types of sound: white noise, clicks and pure tones. The ENV-230 is programmed as a
simple output device from MED-PC IV (see MED-PC IV Programmer’s Guide, DOC-003) that
allows the user to adjust both the volume and d uration of each sound.

CHAPTER 2
Sound Modes
Sound modes are selected using the Sound Mode Selection switches. Turning the Volume
Adjustment potentiometer left and right controls the volume of each sound, and the Duration
Selection switches are used to control the duration of the sound. See Figure 2.1 for an
illustration of these controls.

Cli ck Mod e
Click mode produces a continuous stream of clicks separated by 100 ms when the output is
activated.
White Noi se Mode
This mode produces white noise when the output is activated.
Pure Tone Mode
This mode produces a pure tone when the output is activat ed. The Sound Mode Selection
switches may be used to control the frequency of the pure tone. The frequency options are
shown in Table 3.1.

Volume A dj ustment
Turn the Volume Adjustment potentiometer ( Figure 3.1) until the desired volume level is
reached.
Sound Mode Selection
Select a sound mode by setting Sound Mode Selection switches as shown in Table 3.2.

Attach the speaker cable to the SPEAKER connector on the back of the ENV -230. Insert the
speaker panel into an available bay on the operant conditioning chamber. Connect the TO MED
OPERATE cable on the back of the ENV-230 to any available output on the standard MED
connection panel. The ENV-230 is compatible with speakers that have the following MED part
numbers: ENV-224AM, ENV-324W and ENV-224BM.
