SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Never put electrical units into children's hands
Never allow children to use electrical devices unattended.
If swallowed, batteries may endanger life. Therefore keep the unit and bat-
teries out of the reach of children. If a battery is swallowed, seek medical
assistance immediately.
Keep plastic packaging out of the reach of children. There is a risk of as-
phyxiation.
Set the unit up safely
Place the unit on a sturdy, level surface. It is not designed for use in rooms
that are very humid (e.g. bathrooms). Always make sure that
there is adequate ventilation;
there are no direct heat sources (e.g. heaters) that could affect the unit;
the unit is not in direct sunlight;
avoid contact with liquids and water (e.g. do not place vases close to
the unit);
the unit is not placed close to magnetic fields (e.g. televisions or other
loudspeakers);
naked flames such as lit candles are not placed near the unit.
Leave access to the power connection
Only plug the unit into a mains plug (230 V ~ 50 Hz) that is easy to reach
and is close to the place where you have set the unit up. The mains plug
must be freely accessible so that you can unplug the unit quickly if you
should need to do so.
Do not use extension cables so as to avoid falls.
About these instructions
Read these instructions carefully before using the system; note the warnings on the unit and in the
operating instructions and always keep the operating instructions close to hand. If you sell or give
the device away, make sure you also hand over these instructions.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Never undertake your own repairs
If the plug, cable or unit is damaged pull the plug immediately from the
mains.
Never try to open and/or repair the unit yourself. There is a risk of electric
shock. If there is a defect contact our service centre or other suitable spe-
cialist workshop.
Storms
Pull the plug and antenna cable out of the mains if you are away for a long
period of time or there is a storm.
CD player
The CD player is a first class laser product. The unit has a safety system that
prevents dangerous laser rays escaping from the unit during normal use.
In order to avoid eye injuries never manipulate or damage the unit's secu-
rity system.
Dispose of batteries in an environmentally appropriate way
Do not put used batteries in the household rubbish. The batteries must be
deposited at a collection point for used batteries.
Cleaning the unit
Before cleaning, pull the plug out of the mains. Use a dry, soft cloth to
clean the unit. Avoid the use of chemical solutions and cleaning products
because these may damage the unit's surface and/or labels.

GENERAL INFORMATION
About DVD
DVD - Digital Versatile Disc - is a digital medium that saves information.
DVDs are marked with one of the following symbols.
There are different types of DVD with different memory capacities depend-
ing on the how the information is stored.
DVD structure
Video DVDs are divided into titles and chapters. A DVD can have several
titles, which may in turn be made up of several chapters. The titles and
chapters are each numbered sequentially:
The first title of a DVD usually comprises licence instructions and manufac-
turer's information. The next title is usually the film itself. Other titles may
include such items as "making of" documentaries, film previews or infor-
mation on the actors.
Languages and sub-titles Up to eight languages and sub-titles in up to 32 languages can be stored
on DVDs. The languages and sub-titles can be played in any combination
for playback.
Perspective In some DVDs it is even possible to change the perspective if the film was
recorded from different camera positions.
Regional codes
As a result of the global sales strategy a code has been developed for DVDs
that allows the recording only to be played on units bought in certain re-
gions.
This code is based on a system that divides the world into six re-
gions. Europe is in Zone 2 so your DVD player will only play DVDs
that have the regional code 2. The regional code is printed on the
DVD packaging (refer to the following logo).
Apart from DVDs with the regional code 2, the unit will only play DVDs
with the regional code 0 (suitable for any DVD player).
If you find problems when playing certain DVDs make sure that the
DVD has the country code 2 or 0.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Other playable formats
MP3
The MP3 format is a Windows compression format for audio data. MP3
files have to be saved with the file extension *.mp3 so that they can be rec-
ognized.
In contrast to traditional audio CDs, MP3 CDs can be sub-divided into di-
rectories (folders, albums) and files (tracks, titles) - just like a data CD for
your computer.
This unit recognizes up to 999 titles. Folders and titles are read in alpha-
betical order.
MPEG4 and DiVX
MPEG4 is a compression technology for multimedia/video data ("MPEG" =
"Moving Picture Experts Group").
DiVX is a brand name for a video compression-decompression technology
based on the MPEG4 format. This unit supports DiVX 4 and DiVX 5.
Available surround sound formats
The unit can read two surround sound formats.
Dolby Digital 5.1
In Dolby Digital sound format the audio material is saved digitally. To do
this up to five separate full frequency audio channels (front left and right,
centre, rear left and right) and an effect or depth channel (5.1) are saved
separately. Sound media with the Dolby Digital format are shown by these
trademarks.
Because each channel is completely independent a realistic sound is cre-
ated with a "three-dimensional" listening sensation whereby the sound is
given distance, movement and a relative position in the room.
Your unit can read and decode this audio data and outputs to the 5.1 out-
puts. On the other hand the original signal can be sent to an external de-
coder/amplifier via the digital outputs.
dts (Digital Theatre Systems)
The dts abbreviation is used for a less frequently used sound format in
which up to 6 (5.1) separate channels are saved to a sound medium.
Sound media with the dts format are shown by these trademarks.
Your unit can read this audio data and sends it to the digital outputs ("DIG-
ITAL OUT") for decoding.

PREPARATION
Unpacking the unit
Remove all packaging materials including the film on the front of the unit.
WARNING!
Do not let children play with the plastic film. There is a risk of as-
phyxiation!
Inserting the batteries in the remote control
Two Mignon 1.5 V batteries (AAA) are supplied for the remote control.
`Press the clip on the battery panel cover until the cover is loosened.
`Insert the batteries so that the minus pole is resting on the springs.
`Close the battery panel cover again.
WARNING!
The enclosed batteries must not be charged, disassembled,

CONNECTIONS AND CONNECTION OPTIONS
The unit can be connected in various ways to other input and output de-
vices:
to a television
to a video recorder
to a receiver, e.g. stereo system
Make sure that all units are switched off before connecting them.
Only connect the units to the mains when the other connections are
complete.
Setting up the unit
Place the unit on a sturdy, level surface. Always make sure that
there is adequate ventilation
no sources of heat affect the unit;
the unit is not in direct sunlight;
you avoid contact with liquids or water
the unit is not placed close to magnetic fields (e.g. televisions or other
loudspeakers).
Some aggressive furniture paints can weaken the unit's rubber feet. If nec-
essary, place the units on a suitable underlay.
The DVD player connections
Your recorder has standard video, SCART, S-video and component out-
puts. The S-video cable provides better image quality than the video cinch
cable. In turn the SCART cable provides better image quality than the S-
video cable.
PROGRESSIVE SCANIf your television has a so-called "Progressive Scan" function the best image
quality is achieved via the component outputs. An increased image fre-
quency is output using the Progressive Scan procedure. This reduces flick-
ering images to a minimum and displays movements in a more fluid man-
ner.
It goes without saying that your TV must be able to process this format for
it to be used. The PROGRESSIVE SCAN function does not work with a
SCART or other video connection.
Basic settings for video mode
The basic setting installed at the factory for the video mode (V-MODE but-
ton) is VIDEO. Depending on the connection type used you may need
to select a different video mode (refer to refer to “Video mode”, P. 14).
After connecting the DVD player and selecting the video channel, if you
can not see an image or see a very poor or heavily colour cast image, select
a different video mode using the V-MODE button.

CONNECTIONS AND CONNECTION OPTIONS
10
Connection options between the DVD player and television
Connection with the television via the SCART cable
The SCART cable is the simplest connection between the DVD player and
the television. As long as your television can process RGB signals you will
get a very good quality image from this option.
Connection with the television via the S-VHS cable
If your television does not have a SCART connection you can connect with
the unit via the S-VHS cable (S-VIDEO socket). This will provide good im-
age quality.
Please note the colour codes for left/right on the cinch plugs.
N
ote:
Instead of connecting the audio
cinch cable to the television it
can also be connected with a
Dolby Surround Sound (stereo)
system.
To playback the STEREO sound
set the downmix option on the
SPEAKER SETUP menu to
STEREO.

CONNECTIONS AND CONNECTION OPTIONS
Connection with the television using the video-cinch cable
If your television does not have a SCART connection or an S-VIDEO socket
you can also connect with the unit via the video cinch cable.
Component connection (YUV colour format)
If your television has so-called component connections (Y, Cb, Cr) you can
connect the unit to the television or to a projector using these connec-
tions:
Three-pole video cinch cable (image transfer): Connect the units Y, Pb and
Pr socket to the corresponding socket on the television or projector.
You will get equally good image quality with the YUV colour format as
with the RGB format.
Please note the colour codes for
left/right on the cinch plugs.
To replay the STEREO sound set
the downmix option on the
SPEAKER SETUP menu to
STEREO.

CONNECTIONS AND CONNECTION OPTIONS
12
Home cinema connection with analogue sound transmission
A benefit of DVD is the saving and play-back of multi-channel sound. In or-
der to play back 5.1 sound the DVD player produces signals to the 5.1
Dolby Digital output.
To replay the 5.1 Dolby Digital sound change the DOWNMIX option on
the AUDIO menu to OFF:
