SyntheticRubber
ManyO-rings,seals,hoses,exiblepipesandothersimilar
itemswhichappeartobenaturalrubber,areinfact,made
ofsyntheticmaterialscalledFluoroelastomers.Undernormal
operatingconditionsthismaterialissafeanddoesnotpresent
ahealthhazard.However,ifthematerialisdamagedbyre
orexcessiveheating,itcanbreakdownandproducehighly
corrosiveHydrouoricacid.
ContactwithHydrouoricacidcancauseseriousburnson
contactwithskin.Ifskincontactdoesoccur
•Removeanycontaminatedclothingimmediately.
•Irrigateaffectedareaofskinwithacopiousamountof
coldwaterorlimewaterfor15to60minutes.
•Obtainmedicalassistanceimmediately.
Shouldanymaterialbeinaburntoroverheatedcondition,

EmissionstoAir
Manyoftheactivitiesthatarecarriedoutinworkshopsemit
gasesandfumeswhichcontributetoglobalwarming,depletion
oftheozonelayerand/ortheformationofphotochemical
smogatgroundlevel.Byconsideringhowtheworkshop
activitiesarecarriedout,thesegasesandfumescanbe
minimised,thusreducingtheimpactontheenvironment.
ExhaustFumes
Runningcarenginesisanessentialpartofworkshopactivities
andexhaustfumesneedtobeventilatedtoatmosphere.
However,theamountoftimeenginesarerunningandthe
positionofthevehicleshouldbecarefullyconsideredatall
times,toreducethereleaseofpoisonousgasesandminimise
theinconveniencetopeoplelivingnearby.
Solvents
Someofthecleaningagentsusedaresolventbasedandwill
evaporatetoatmosphereifusedcarelessly,orifcansareleft
unsealed.Allsolventcontainersshouldbermlyclosedwhen
notneededandsolventshouldbeusedsparingly.Suitable
alternativematerialsmaybeavailabletoreplacesomeofthe
commonlyusedsolvents.Similarly,manypaintsaresolvent
basedandthesprayshouldbeminimisedtoreducesolvent
emissions.
Refrigerant
Dischargeandreplacementofthesematerialsfromair
conditioningunitsshouldonlybecarriedoutusingthecorrect
equipment.

Alwaysadheretothefollowing.

•Minimisetestingtimesandcheckwheretheexhaust
fumesarebeingblown.

suchsubstancesshouldneverbepoureddownthedrainand
everyprecautionmustbetakentopreventspillagereaching
thedrains.
Handlingofsuchmaterialsmusttakeplacewellawayfromthe
drainsandpreferablyinanareawithakerborwallaroundit,to
preventdischargeintothedrain.Ifaspillageoccursitshould
besoakedupimmediately.Havingaspillkitavailablewillmake

LandContamination
Oils,fuelsandsolventsetc.cancontaminateanysoilthat
theyareallowedtocontact.Suchmaterialsshouldneverbe
disposedofbypouringontosoilandeveryprecautionmustbe
takentopreventspillagereachingsoil.Wastematerialsstored
onopengroundcouldalsoleak,orhavepollutingsubstances
