1 Introduction
The KSZ8841-PMQL-Eval and KSZ8842-PMQL-Eval evaluation Boards are intended to provide
a convenient way to evaluate or demonstrate the functionality and performance of these new
Ethernet products from Micrel. There are two different chips with PCI bus interfaces:
•KSZ8841-PMQL is a single copper port Ethernet MAC controller.
•KSZ8842-PMQL is a two port Ethernet Switch with in-built low latency repeater mode.
The KSZ8842-PMQL is the industry’s first fully managed 2-port switch with a 32 bit, 33MHz PCI
v2.2 bus interface. This will allow the KSZ8842-PMQL to interface to any processor or CPU with a
PCI compliant interface. Utilizing a unique mixed signal design that extends signaling distance
while reducing power consumption, the KSZ8842-PMQL represents Micrel’s fourth generation
integrated Layer-2 switch that is compliant with the IEEE 802.3u standard. The KSZ8841-PMQL
is pin-to-pin compatible with the KSZ8842-PMQL, thereby allowing designers to use either of the
parts interchangeably on the same board.
The devices offer extensive feature sets to effectively address emerging and embedded Fast
Ethernet applications and are outlined in the datasheets. The LinkMDTM cable diagnostics feature
is an industry first which allows the devices to determine the length of the cable, as well as
detecting common cabling plant problems such as open and short circuits. Diagnosis and
elimination of cabling faults can lead to reduced user frustration and fewer equipment returns.
The KSZ8842-PMQL can also be configured as a switch or as a low-latency (<310 ns) repeater in
latency-critical, embedded or industrial Ethernet applications. For industrial automation
applications, the KSZ8842-PMQL can run in half-duplex mode regardless of the application.
Micrel provides software drivers based on the PCI bus solution with which to evaluate the devices
functionality and features. The software includes Linux, Vxworks and WinCE drivers and was
evaluated on the following platforms:
•SH7751R platform with SH4 processor from Renesas
•The KS8695PX platform with ARM processor from Micrel
•A PC with PCI slots.
The evaluation boards provide a convenient means to evaluate the device’s rich feature set. The
RJ45 Ethernet ports are provided allowing evaluation with either PC or industry standard test
equipment such as Spirent SmartBits.
2 Features
•KSZ8841-PMQL-Eval board supports a single copper port Ethernet MAC controller and
PCI bus interface to PCI slot.
•KSZ8842-PMQL-Eval board supports dual copper ports Ethernet Switch and PCI bus
interface to a PCI slot.
•Using the KSZ8841-PMQL evaluation board, WOL (Wake-on-LAN) functionality can be
demonstrated.
•Two ports managed switch or MAC controller.

4 Hardware Description
The KSZ884X-PMQL-Eval board is a daughter card in a compact form and can be plugged into
any of the standard PCI slots on any platform.
The KSZ884X-PMQL-Eval board is a high performance adapter card that is compatible with
version 2.2 of the PCI local bus specification, and supports Plug and Play (PnP) functionality on
the Window driver of the PC. This evaluation board was also evaluated on the SH7751R platform
from Renesas and the KS8695P Evaluation Board from Micrel.

The evaluation boards support full-duplex mode. All of the Ethernet features can be managed via
the PCI bus platform. The evaluation board can be configured to a different model by using the
different devices. They are listed as below:
•The board can be configured as a single port managed MAC-PHY controller by using the
KSZ8841-PMQL device.
•The board can be configured as a two port managed switch or repeater by using the
KSZ8842-PMQL device.
The KSZ88XX-PMQL-Eval board is easy to be evaluated. There are programmable LED
indicators for link and activity on all ports and a power LED. The evaluation board includes Linux,
VxWorks, Windows and WinCE drivers to support this hardware.

4.6 EEPROM Contents
4.6.1 EEPROM Format for the KSZ8841-PMQL-Eval Board
An external serial EEPROM with a standard micro wire bus interface is used for non-volatile
storage of information such as the host MAC address, power management information and
subsystem ID, etc. The KSZ8841-PMQL performs an automatic read from the external EEPROM
and places the data into certain host accessible registers after the system reset.
The EEPROM format is shown in Table 6 and Table 7.

Indicates whether or not the KSZ8841-PMQL implements a list of New capabilities.
When set, this bit indicates the presence of New capabilities. When reset, New
capabilities are not implemented.
14 NO_SRST
No Soft Reset
When this bit is set, it indicates that the KSZ8841-PMQL is transitioning from
D3_hot to D0 because PowerState commands do not perform an internal reset.
Configuration Context is preserved. Upon transition from the D3_hot to the D0
Initialized state, no additional operating system intervention is required to preserve
Configuration Context beyond writing to the PowerState bits.
When this bit is clear, KSZ8841-PMQL performs an internal reset upon
transitioning from D3_hot to D0 via software control of the PowerState bits.
Configuration Context is lost when performing the soft reset. Upon transition from
the D3_hot to the D0 state, full re-initialization sequence is needed to return the
device to D0 Initialized.
Regardless of this bit, devices that transition from D3_hot to D0 by a system or bus
segment reset will return to the device state D0 Uninitialized with only PME context
preserved if PME is supported and enabled.

4.7 Clock Scheme
The Ethernet chip reference clock is provided from the external 25 MHz crystal (Y1). The crystal
is connected to the X1 and X2 pins on the KSZ88XX-PMQL. This 25 MHz clock is specified as
+3.3V tolerant, +/- 50 ppm. If an oscillator is used, X1 connects to a 3.3V tolerant oscillator and
X2 has no connection.

5 External Interface
5.1 Ethernet Ports
5.1.1 10/100 Base-T/TX Ethernet Ports
There are two 10/100 Base-T/TX Ethernet ports on KSZ8842-PMQL evaluation board and one
10/100 Base-T/TX Ethernet port on KSZ8841-PMQL evaluation board. The ports can be
connected to a traffic generator or analyzer via standard RJ45 connectors using CAT-5 cables.
Each port can be used as either an uplink to downlink. The ports support HP auto MDI/MDIX so
there is not need for cross over cables.

5.1.2 PCI Interface
There is one set of PCI bus gold finger on the KSZ88XX-PMQL-Eval board. The gold finger
supports a 3.3V PCI slot as well as the standard 5V PCI slots for the PC. There are two marks for
the 3.3V and 5V PCI power keys on the bottom side of the KSZ88XX-PMQL-Eval boards.

The software drivers to support the KSZ88XX-PMQL devices as below:

The software drivers to support the KSZ88XX-PMQL devices were verified on the following
platforms:

Using these software drivers that are provided in source code will make it easier for customers to
evaluate and develop code for their own applications.
6.1 Linux Driver Support on KS8695P Platform from Micrel
Micrel has developed a Linux 2.6 driver to support the KSZ88XX-PMQL devices and tested them
on the KS8695P platform with ARM processor and PCI bus.
Using this driver, the user can use the provided command set to read/write all of host accessible
registers and display their values for evaluation. By connecting the Ethernet port to SmartBits,
they can also use the command set to transmit and receive packets and display the results of the
MIB counter, etc. When the Ethernet port is connected to a PC, the user can use network
commands to ping the IP address of the board for TCP/IP layer evaluation by this platform.
6.2 VxWorks/Linux/ Driver Support on SH7751R Platform from Renesas
Micrel has developed a VxWork 5.4.1 and Linux 2.6 driver to support the KSZ88XX-PMQL
devices and tested them on a SH7751R platform with SH4 processor and PCI bus.
Using those drivers, the user can use the provided command set to read/write all of host
accessible registers and display their values for evaluation. By connecting the Ethernet port to
SmartBits, they can also use the command set to transmit and receive packets and display the
results of the MIB counter, etc. When the Ethernet port is connected to a PC, the user can use
network commands to ping the IP address of the board for TCP/IP layer evaluation by this
platform.
6.3 WinCE Driver Supporting
Micrel can provide WinCE 5.0 driver code to support the KSZ88XX-PMQL devices and helpfully
for customer to verify their driver code for KSZ88XX-PMQL family.
6.4 Window Driver Supporting
Micrel has developed the Windows driver to support the KSZ88XX-PMQL devices such that the
evaluation board can be evaluated on the PCI slot of a PC. Using this driver, the user can do
PING the IP address of the evaluation board for a simple testing (detail to see the section 7).

7 KSZ884X-PMQL-Eval Board Demonstration
7.1 The Platform on PC
7.1.1 Prepared before Installation
Create a folder on the PC and download the Windows drivers into the folder, or copy the
Windows drivers into a floppy disk. First, unpack the KS884X_windows.zip file in the software
folder on the CD which is with the evaluation board kit. There will appear three subdirectory
(Driver, PCI, ISA) after unpack the zip file. The Driver subdirectory contains the Window driver
files for the KSZ8841-PMQL–Eval board and KSZ8842-PMQL-Eval board.
7.1.2 Installation the Evaluation Card
First of all, open the case of the PC and check the PCI slot to see it supports 5V or 3.3V power, if
the PCI slot support 5V, then close pin 2 and pin 3 of the JP12 on the board. If the PCI slot
supports 3.3V, then close pin 1 and pin 2 of the JP12 on the board. Make sure the configuration
is correct on the demo board. After that to plug the KS884X-PMQL-Eval board into the PCI slot
on the PC and power on the computer. Upon detection of new PCI hardware, Window will prompt
to install a driver as shown in Figure 6.

Clicking Next button on this window, The Window will display as shown in Figure 7.

Place the floppy disk with the KSZ884X PCI Windows driver files into the floppy drive and check
the Floppy disk drives optional (or specify a location which copied the Window drives into the
location) and click Next button, the Windows will search the KS884xPMQL Window drivers
automatically.

If the search is successful, the Window display as shown in Figure 8 and click Next button on the
Window. Display a Window as shown in Figure 9.

Window may prompts to visit the Windows Update Web Site and prompts to continue the
installation, click Yes button on the Window, Window display has finished installing as Figure 10.

At this time, to connect the port of the KS884x-PMQL demo board to a link partner or a KSZ884x-
MQL demo board, by typing networking commands “Ping [IP address”] on DOS prompt symbol to see
if TCP/IP packets can be communicated, please refer section 7.2.7 and 7.2.8 for configuration.

7.2 The Platform from Micrel
Using the KS8695P platform is one of the better ways to evaluate the KSZ884X-PMQL devices
on the evaluation boards.
First of all, please make sure the jumper JP12 pin 1 and pin 2 is closed for 3.3V PCI power on the
KSZ884x-PMQL evaluation board.
The KS8695P platform with the KSZ8842-PMQL-Eval board attached for 3.3V PCI slot power as
shown in Figure 11.
Please note, that when using the KS8695P platform, the KSZ88XX-PMQL support driver must
first be loaded into the flash memory on the KS8695P platform.

Platform
7.2.1 System Connection
The Ethernet port of the KSZ88XX-PMQL-Eval should be connected to the Ethernet port of the
Smartbit tester, and the RS-232 serial port on the KS8695P platform should be connected to the
RS-232 serial port of the PC. This setup is shown in Figure 12.
