6B GENERAL INFORMATION
Midian’s PR-10i is a simplex store and forward repeater (aka simplexor or parrot) and paging regenerator that
supports retransmitting of both tone and voice similar to the discontinued Zetron Model 19.
Simplex Repeater Mode:
The PR-10i can be connected to a simplex mobile or base station to create a simplex store and forward repeater.
When the PR-10i sees a busy indication from the connected radio it will start recording the received audio. When
the busy indication goes away for a programmed amount of time, the PR-10i will key the radio and retransmit the
recorded audio. The following are applications for the PR-10i as a simplex repeater:
• Expand radio coverage into remote locations, valleys, tunnels, buildings (hospitals, campuses, etc),
downtown areas and more.
• Evaluate potential radio site or coverage problems by connecting the PR-10i to a mobile radio. A technician
can then drive through the desired coverage area, key up and transmit voice, unkey and listen to the repeated
audio quality.
Selective Repeat Mode:
The PR-10i has a tone decoder on the board that can be programmed to decode any 2 tones (up to 4 different
sets of tones). When the tone decoder decodes the programmed sequence(s) it will give a validate output to the
PR-10i. The validate confirms to the PR-10i that the PR-10i should repeat the incoming audio. The tones will also
be retransmitted. The following are applications for the PR-10i as a selective simplex repeater:
• Retransmit 2-tone pages for fire departments into remote areas or buildings with poor coverage.
Note: If formats other than any 2 tones need to be decoded please see your salesperson. DTMF, 5-Tone or Pulse
Tone (1500 Hz or 2805 Hz for HEAR Systems) can be added as an option.
Announcement Mode:
The PR-10i can be programmed to repeat the last received audio message continuously at programmable
intervals, applications include:
• Broadcasts for road or weather conditions
• Aviation authority broadcasts for pilot information (ATIS – Automatic Terminal Information Service)
Features:
• Up to 180 seconds of record time for message playback

• DTMF, 5-Tone and Pulse Tone decoding for validating and regenerating paging are available as an option,

HARDWARE INSTALLATION
Be certain to follow standard anti-static procedures when handling any of Midian’s products.
Use the enclosed matching cables with RJ45 type connectors to plug into the PR-10i. The other ends can be
connected to the appropriate type of radio connector using the pin out and color codes show below. See
connector pin out in the chart below.
Midian offers several pre-made cables for plug and play operation for certain radios. Contact sales for further
information.
J3-1: Validate (Brown): This is an external validation for the PR-10i to retransmit the page. The PR-10i has its
own internal validation using 2-Tone, DTMF, 5-Tone or Pulse Tone signaling.
J3- : External Enable (Blue): If using a second radio as the transmitter, this input is used as a busy channel
lockout feature. Connect to a point in the radio’s squelch or CTCSS circuit that changes logic level when a carrier
is detected.
J3-3: Mic audio (White): Connect to the MIC-High in the base station radio.
J3-4: Ground (Black): Connect to ground in the base station radio.
J3-5: COR Input (Red): Connect to a point in the radio’s squelch or CTCSS circuit that changes logic level when
a carrier is detected. The unit defaults to look for an active low. If programmed for an active high the LED will be
on when C R is inactive and off when it is active.
J3-6: External Power (Green): Connect to a 13-18 VDC source in the base station radio. If power cannot be
connected to the radio use the optional wall adaptor (13-18 VDC). Midian recommends using the power from
either radio, or from our AC adaptor. Use of any other power source may void the warranty.
J3-7: PTT Output (Yellow): This open collector provides a ground during PTT. Connect this to the PTT of the
base station radio.
J3-8: Speaker – (Violet): Connect to Speaker - of the base station radio. If the speaker uses a common ground
do not connect the Violet wire.
J3-9: Speaker + or Single Ended Speaker High (Orange): Connect to Speaker + of the base station radio.
J3-10: Trunking Delay (Gray): Connect this to a point in the base station that gives a change of state when a
channel is acquired. The unit defaults to look for an active low. If programmed for an active high the LED will be
on when the trunk delay is inactive and off when it is active.

1B PRODUCT PROGRAMMING
The PR-10i is programmed using Midian’s KL-4F and KL-4F-PC1 programming cable and the MPS software.
Please reference the KL-4F manual for programming cable and software setup
KL4-F USB PORT ASSIGNMENT and SOFTWARE INSTALLATION
Go to our website midians.com and under downloads> software down load the latest MPS software version. If
using the supplied CD-R M insert it into the PC’s CD-R M drive. In the browser that will pop-up, install the MPS
programming software. Be certain that the “Install KL-4 USB Driver” box is checked during the installation
process.

USB port and the screen will flash and show the device location.
pen the software and choose product from product tree then set appropriate comport selection in the MPS
software as needed This must be done for both the PR10 and PR10 Tone Decoder selections.
Set the parameters of the software to fit the application. If any clarifications on a feature are required, move the
mouse cursor over the feature name until the question mark appears and right click, a definition of the feature will
be shown.
After entering the parameters, save the file by going to File - Save As. Enter the file name in the File Name block
and click Save. Saving the file will allow for quick and easy reprogramming of units.
Plug the KL-4F-PC1 into the programming jack on the unit and into the P10 connector on the KL-4F. Insert the
3.5 mm stereo plug into the J8 connector on the PR-10i. The PR-10i dos not receive power from the KL-4F it must
be powered from the radio or the AC adaptor.
To program the PR-10i, turn power onto the PR-10i and within 15 seconds click “Program Unit” in the menu bar to
send the file to the unit. Follow the same procedure to read the unit, but select “Read Unit” in the menu bar.
Cycle power after programming or reading the unit

General Info Tab:
Unit Information
This information area is updated when a unit is read or programmed. It will also be updated when a data file is
loaded from a previous unit read and then saved. Below is a summary of the fields:
Product - Shows a more detailed description of the product model within the series.
uP #1 Firmware Version - Indicates the reported Firmware Version of the microcontroller of this product.
uP #1 Loader Version - Indicates the reported Loader Version of the microcontroller of this product.

General Settings Tab:
Store on COR/Store on VOX: Select the appropriate method that the PR-10i should use to start recording
incoming audio.
COR
Hold-Up Time This sets the amount of time after a loss of C R or V X that the unit will wait until it retransmits
the recorded audio.
VOX
Sensitivity: This is a threshold detection based on the energy level in the audio.
Attack Time: This sets the minimum time before the PR-10i will detect V X based on the sensitivity setting.
Decay Time: This sets the time before the PR-10i will drop the V X detection. Be certain to set this long enough
so that you do not have drop outs between words or on brief pauses.
Beep Options
Power Up : Enables a short beep sequence that takes place immediately after power-up.
Courtesy Beep: If selected, once the unit is done retransmitting the recorded audio it will generate a courtesy
tone to let others know it is done retransmitting.
Voice Compression: If left unchecked the PR-10i can store up to a 2.25 minute voice message. If checked the
PR-10i can store up to a 3 minute voice message, but with a lower level of audio quality.

Signaling Tab
Note – This is a new TAB for the PR-10i. The PR-10i uses a 2- tone decoder that is built-in to the unit. That
decoder is progra ed using this TAB. The previous version of this device is the PR-10. The PR-10 used
a tone decoder odule that required a 2nd progra ing interface specifically for the decoder. That 2
nd
progra ing interface does not apply to the PR-10i
Decode Settings
Decode Tone A Time: The amount of time the first tone (A-tone) of a sequence must be present before it is
decoded. This should be between 1/2 and 1/6th of the encode time and greater than the Tone Loss Time. For a
1-second A-tone, the suggested value is 400 milliseconds.
Decode Tone B Time:
The amount of time the 2nd tone (B-tone) of a sequence must be present before it is decoded. This should be
between 1/2 and 1/6th of the encode time and greater than the Tone Loss Time. For a 3-second B-tone, the
suggested value is 600 milliseconds.
Decode Group Tone Time:
The amount of time a single tone must be present before it is considered a group call. This should be between
1/2 and 1/6th of the encode time and greater than the Tone Loss Time. For an 8-second tone, the suggested
value is 4.0 seconds.
Tone Loss Time:
The amount of time the absence of tone will be permitted before the decoder is reset. This should be less than
the shortest of the A-tone Decode Time and B-tone Decode Time. If the shortest decode time is 400 ms, the
suggested loss time is 200 ms. Some tone formats specify a gap time between tones. If using such a format, the
loss time must exceed the gap time.
Decode Sequences
Number of Decodes: This is the number of decode sequences that are enabled and the device is capable of
decoding.
A-tone Frequency
The frequency of the first tone (A-tone) of the sequence in Hz.
B-tone Frequency

The frequency of the second tone (B-tone) of the sequence in Hz.
Retransmit Settings Tab:
Key-Up Delay: This sets the amount of time the PR-10i waits after keying the base station radio before it starts to
retransmit the recorded audio.
Trunking Delay Enable: Check this box if using a trunking system. This will cause the PR-10i to hold off
regenerating the recorded audio until the PR-10i has received a channel acquisition acknowledgement from the
base station radio.
Validation Required for Retransmit: If checked the PR-10i will only retransmit messages once it has received a
logic low from the internal tone decoder.
Number of Retransmits: This sets how many times the PR-10i will retransmit the last recorded audio clip. If set
to zero the PR-10i will continuously retransmit the last recorded message based on the retransmit interval until a
new message is received. This is used for Announcement Mode.
Retransmit Interval: This sets the time interval between the retransmits set in the Number of Retransmits field.
