1. About this Manual
This manual has been established for fast and secure handling ofyour Electro Sheep
Stunner. Before starting to operate the Electro Sheep Stunner, please read this manual
carefully. The safety instructions containedwithin must be observed at
all times. Always keep one copy of this manual within close reach of the item. The
manufacturer will accept no liability for any damages caused by not followingthe
instructions of this manual.
1.1 Target Group
This manual is addressed to plant owners and their staff working in slaughtering plants,
particularly to butchers and their trainees. This manual is for personnel with basic technical
understanding of handling the Electro Sheep Stunner described, to the qualified personnel
for assembly, installation and service and maintenance and also to the personnel for
cleaning.
1.2 How to Keep this Manual
This manual is an important part of the Electro Sheep Stunner and must be kept accessible
to the operating and maintenance staff at all times during the whole period of operation.
Therefore always keep one copy of this manual within reach of the item. Further copies of
this manual are available at an extra charge and can be
obtained from our sales department, the address and telephone number of
which is indicated further ahead in the imprint.
1.3 Liability and Warranty
All specifications and instructions for operation and maintenance of this
Electro Sheep Stunner are made to the best of our knowledge taking into account our
expertise and experiences so far. For any legal claims which may arise from this
contractual relationship we give exclusive warranty only within the scope of those
obligations agreed upon in the original contract. The original version of this manual has
been issued and verified by us.

Alterations and/or adjustments to the Sheep Stunner may be permitted under certain
circumstances, in cases of which prior written permission is obtained from MEFE.

2. For your Safety
2.1 Indented Use
The Electro Sheep Stunner is employed together with FREUND-Stunners STUN-E430,
STUNE512 and STUN-E513/514
for stunning of sheep, lambs and goats.
is only approved for one operator. Any other user is not intended and bears safety risks
for the operating personnel.
Further issues for intended use are:
Compliance with the safety instructions
Professional execution of repairs and maintenance
Cleaning schedule.
FREUND AND MEFE disclaims any liability for damages caused by not intended use.
2.2 Not intended Use
Only operate the Electro Sheep Stunner according to its intended use. In case of doubt
please contact the manufacturer.
Use the Electro Sheep Stunner only on animals and never on humans.
Do not use the Electro Sheep Stunner to position the animals.
Do not use the Electro Sheep Stunner to move items or animals.
2.3 Electrical Safety in Accordance with DIN VDE 0701-0702/EN 60204-1
All our electrical machinery and equipment is tested for electrical safety prior to
commissioning and following modification or repair in our factory in accordance with the
electrical engineering rules as per DIN VDE 0701-0702/EN 60204-1.A test sticker is
attached. This test sticker indicates when the next periodic inspection must be carried out.
The inspection interval for machinery and equipment that is used in slaughtering and
cutting plants is every six WEEKS. The electrical inspection is carried out by an electrically
skilled person in our factory.
2.4 Explanation of Signal Words and Symbols in Use
2.4.1 Operational Instructions for Safety Precautions
When using the Electro Sheep Stunner, danger may arise in certain situations caused by
particular behaviours. Notices indicating such risks are placed in front of each particular
work step and marked by the following symbol:

Signal word Meaning
DANGER Indicating an imminent danger which will result in danger to life or death unless
otherwise prevented.
WARNING Indicating a potential danger which may cause most severe
injuries or lead to death unless otherwise prevented.

2.5 Remaining Rest Risk
This Electro Sheep Stunner is state-of-the-art and complies with the essential
safety and health requirements issued by the European Union.However, it presents
hazards which cannot be eliminated construction wise:
Risk of injury to fingers and hands
Electrical hazards by using improper connection cables.
Despite all precaution measures taken, there may arise unapparent remaining risks
beyond that. The remaining risks can be reduced if attention is paid to the safety
instructions at the beginning of each chapter as well as to the operation manual in general.

3 Technical Description
The stunning unit consists of a stunner and the CAT 44SH HANDPIECE. The stunning unit
has been manufactured in compliance with DIN EN 60335-2-87 (German Industry
Standard) and the Animal Protection-Slaughter Decree 1099/2004 (German TierSchlV of
25 November 1999). The Electro-Stun-Tong complies with the quality standards. It has left
our factory in perfect condition. When operating stunning units the relevant provisions of
the trade association are to be observed. Moreover the provisions of the veterinary offices,
the EU and the animal welfare apply. The Electro-Stun-Tong for sheep, lambs and goats is
characterized by the following features:
single hand operation for head stun inducing (cardiac arrest)
Extra-long spike electrodes for optimized skin-contact even through the wool
Plastic rings around arms avoid bruising of fingers
Robust design made from high grade stainless steel probes
Wear-resistant helix-cable.

4 Operating and Stunning
4.1 Safety Information

Risk of accident caused by insufficiently qualified personnel
OPERATOR TO WEAR ELECTRICAL INSULATED GLOVES
Danger to Life and most severe injuries are possible.
The Electro Sheep Stunner may only be operated, maintained and repaired by instructed
and authorized service personnel.
4.2 Operating with the Electro-Stun-Tong
Usually the Electro Sheep Stunner has no own operating elements, because itis used
together with a stunner for stunning of sheep, lambs and goats. Details of the operation and
implementation of electrical stunning refer to the operating instructions of the stunner.
4.3 Performing the stunning
The Electro Sheep Stunner is for head stunning application.
Connect the Electro Sheep Stunner with the stunner.
Place the electrodes of the Electro Sheep Stunner on both sides
of the head between eye and ear of the sheep.
1. From behind press the length of the probes onto the forehead
angling forward until contact is made
2. From the front press probes on top of head horizontally
angling down until contact is made –
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THE SUNNER “STAB” INTO THE HEAD
This is the shortest way for the current to flow through the brain. Ideal fixing positions of the
Electro Sheep Stunner of sheep.

Cleaning and Maintenance
In principle, all cleaning and maintenance works must be performed after the stunner has
been switched off. Dirty and consumed electrodes lead to poor skin contact and do not
ensure optimum stunning.
5.1 Safety Information

5.2 Daily Cleaning
Only use the cleaning detergents especially designed for use in the food industry.
1. Disconnect the Electro Sheep Stunner from the mains supply.
2. Clean the Electro Sheep Stunner only manually by using customary detergents and
disinfectants.
3.. Clean the dirty electrodes with a steel brush.
4. Keep the electrodes bare.
5. Store the Electro-Stun-Tong in a warm and dry place for its next application.
5.3 Periodic Inspection of Electrical Equipment
In accordance with the accident prevention regulation “Electrical installations and equipment”
and the operational safety rules the operator is obliged to ensure that all electrical machinery
and installations are regularly checked for electrical safety. Periodic inspections of non-
stationary electrical machinery and equipment that is used in slaughtering and cutting plants
must be carried out at intervals of six months in accordance with DIN VDE 0701-0702/EN
60204-1. The electrical test must be carried out by an electrically skilled person in
the sense of the accident prevention regulation “Electrical installations and equipment” or by
an electrically instructed person. We recommend that you should document the inspections
and test results in a test logbook. This will enable you at any time to further proof that you
have inspected your machinery and equipment in accordance with requirements. Service at
MEFE would like to give you the option to arrange for the next periodic inspection of your
machinery or equipment to be carried out at our warehouse. Our service includes a complete
inspection of the electrical system with inspection report and test sticker. If you are interested

5.4 Replacing Electrodes
Consumed electrodes can be recognized by their rounded tips.
Replace the consumed electrodes in time.
6 Disposal and Recycling
Disposal of the Electro Sheep Stunner must be performed in accordancewith applicable
legal regulations of each country. Dismantle the Electro Sheep Stunner. Refuse all material
separately to deposit and recycling. Please follow the instructions below for the sake of
pollution control and your own safety:
Observe the local provisions on pollution control.
Dispose of all materials in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
Separate all materials correctly and sorted.
Return hazardous waste to local hazardous waste deposits.
