Thank you for choosing the Modeltech P-51D .46ARF. You have chosen one of the best flying sport-scale warbirds
available to modelers today.
The P-51 Mustang is arguably the most famous airplane in World War II. Used extensively in both theatres, the
Mustang was fast, agile, and tough. The D model was the most common P-51 in service, and the most liked. It has
excellent visibility due to the bubble canopy and it's equipped with the more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, as
opposed to the Allison V-12 used in earlier models.
Mustangs served in nearly every combat zone, including the Pacific where they escorted B-29s to Japan from Iwo
Jima. Between 1941-1945, theAAF ordered 14,855 Mustangs of which 7,956 were P-51Ds. During the Korean War,
P-51Ds were used primarily for close support of ground forces until withdrawn from combat in 1953.
The Modeltech P-51D .46 ARF is a prebuilt .46 size sport-scale version of the venerable P-51D. The scale outline of
the full-scale P-51D is reproduced, yet the wing-foil has been enhanced to provide excellent slow-speed characteristics.
Look closely at our P-51D and you will notice that it is built straight and light, yet is very strong. The fuselage is built up
fromlightweight balsaand plywoodandthe tailsurfaces arebuilt-upbalsa. The wingpanels arecompletelybuilt upfrom
lightweight balsa and fully-sheeted for extreme durability.
The P-51D comes with a complete hardware package that includes the option of fixed landing gear or retracts (retracts
are included), a clear canopy, fiberglass cowl, molded radiator scoop, wheels, fuel tank, tail wheel assembly, a custom
polished aluminum spinner and all of the necessary nuts and bolts. The P-51D is covered by master craftsmen using real
iron-on covering material, not cheap "shelf paper" like some other manufacturers use.

This instruction manual is designed to guide you through the entire final assembly process of your new P-51D .46
ARF in the least amount of time possible. Along the way you'll learn how to properly assemble your new airplane
and also learn tips that will help you in the future. We have listed some of our recommendations below. Please read

This section describes our recommendations to help you in deciding which types of accessories to purchase for your new
P-51D .46 ARF. These suggestions are not set in stone, but they should provide you with a good starting point.
Two Stroke Engine with Fixed Landing Gear
To get the P-51D flying as soon as possible, for the least amount of money, it can be assembled using a two stroke engine
and the included fixed main landing gear. This would also be an ideal setup for those pilots flying off extremely rough
and/or long grass fields.
Radio System:
A standard four channel radio system with four standard servos will work fine.
Engine and Propeller:
A ball bearing .46 size two stroke engine with a standard muffler will be more than enough power. Use an 11 x 6
composite propeller for the best performance.

Four Stroke Engine with Retractable Landing Gear
For a more scale appearance and sound, assemble your P-51D with a four stroke engine and the included retractable main
gear assemblies.
Radio System:
A five or more channel radio system with four standard servos and one low profile 180º retract servo will work fine.
Engine and Propeller:
A .61 size four stroke engine with a standard muffler would be an excellent choice. Use a 13 x 6 composite
propeller for the best performance.

The covering material used on the P-51D .46 ARF is real iron-on heat shrink covering material, not cheap "shelf
paper." Because of this, it is possible with heat and humidity changes that the covering on your airplane may wrinkle
or sag. This trait is inherent in all types of heat shrink material. To remove any wrinkles that might be visible you will
need to purchase, or borrow from a fellow modeler, a heat iron. If you need to purchase one, the Global Heat Sealing
Iron # 360900 is recommended.
Follow this simple procedure to remove the wrinkles:
❑Plug in and turn on the sealing iron to the medium-high temperature setting. Allow the iron to heat up for
approximately 5 - 7 minutes.
❑After the iron has reached temperature, lightly apply the iron to the wrinkled section of the covering. Move the iron
slowly over the wrinkled section until the covering tightens and the wrinkles disappear. You will notice that the color of
the covering will darken when it is heated. When the covering cools back down, it will return to its normal color.
☛Ifthecolor layersmears fromany ofthe seamsthetemperatureof theiron istoo hot. Turnthetemperature dialdown
and wait about 5 minutes for the iron to adjust to the lower temperature. You can remove any excess color streaks using
a paper towel soaked with a small quantity of Acetone.

We do not suggest storing your airplane in an extremely hot environment (like the back of your car in
direct sunlight) for any length of time. The extreme heat could cause the covering material to wrinkle

SECTION 1: ASSEMBLING THE WING

YOU'LL NEED THE FOLLOWING SUPPLIES:

Step 1: Installing the Dihedral brace
❑Using a modeling knife, cut away and remove the
excess covering material that overlaps onto the root ribs
of each wing panel.
❑Use a ruler and a pencil to locate and draw a vertical
centerline on each side of the plywood dihedral brace.

❑Test-fit the dihedral brace into each wing half. It should
slide into each half up to the centerline you drew.
☛Ifitdoesnotfitproperly,use220gritsandpapertolightly
sand the edges and tips of the brace.
WARNING
Wheninstalling thebrace, makesure thetopof thebrace (it's
straight, not angled) is toward the top of the wing.
❑Test-fitbothwinghalvestogetherwiththedihedralbrace
temporarily installed (without using glue).
❑Lookcarefullyatthecentersectionjoint: thewinghalves
should fit together tightly with few or no gaps in the joint.
☛If the wing halves do not fit properly, remove the
dihedral brace and use 220 grit sandpaper to lightly sand
the edges and tips of the brace.
❑Mixa generousamountofKwik Bond30Minute Epoxy. Working withonlyone winghalffor now, applyathin layer
of epoxy inside the dihedral brace box and to only half of the dihedral brace. Make sure to cover the top and bottom, as
well as the sides, and use enough epoxy to fill any gaps.
❑Slidethe dihedralbrace intothe winghalf upto itscenterline. Remove anyexcess epoxybefore itdries usinga paper
towel and rubbing alcohol, and allow the epoxy to set up before proceeding.
Step 2: Joining the Wing Halves
❑Test fit both wing halves together again to double check that the wing halves still fit together properly. It's important
that the leading and trailing edges of each wing half are even with each other.
❑Mix a generous amount of Kwik Bond 30 Minute Epoxy. Apply a thin layer of epoxy to the exposed half of the
dihedral brace, the inside of the second wing half, and the entire surface of both root ribs.Make sure to use enough
epoxy to fill any gaps.
❑Slide the two wing halves together and realign them. Wipe away any excess epoxy using a paper towel and rubbing
alcohol, and use several pieces of masking tape to hold the two wing halves aligned until the epoxy fully cures.
❑Once the epoxy has fully cured, remove the masking tape and double-check the center section joint. If any gaps are
present, mix a small amount of Kwik Bond 30 Minute Epoxy and carefully fill any remaining gaps. Remove any excess
epoxy using a paper towel and rubbing alcohol, and allow the epoxy to thoroughly cure.

Step 3: Installing the Leading Edge Support Brace
❑Test-fit the leading edge support brace onto the leading
edge of the wing. The covered edge of the brace should be
toward the bottom of the wing.
❑Use a pencil to trace the contour of the brace onto the
leading edge of the wing.
❑Remove the brace and use a modeling knife to cut away and remove the covering from inside the outline.
❑Mix a small amount of Kwik Bond 5 Minute Epoxy and apply a thin layer to the gluing surface on the wing.
❑Slide the support brace back into place and realign it. Remove any excess epoxy using a paper towel and rubbing
alcohol, and use several pieces of masking tape to hold the brace in place until the epoxy fully cures.

SECTION 2: MOUNTING THE WING

Step 1: Aligning the Wing
❑With the fuselage upside down, locate and draw a
vertical centerline on the back of the wing saddle.

❑Measure 5/8" in front of the trailing edge of the wing
and draw two marks, one on each side of the centerline.
❑Measure 1-3/8" out from each side of the centerline and
draw two intersecting marks.
❑Place the wing into the wing saddle and push the trailing edge down firmly into place.
❑Carefully align the centerline of the wing (the center joint) with the vertical centerline you drew on the fuselage.
❑Use a couple of pieces of masking tape to hold the wing firmly in place and aligned.
Step 2: Installing the Blind Nuts
❑Remove the wing from the wing saddle.
❑Usinga 5/16"drill bit,enlargeonly thetwo holesdrilled
through the plywood block in the fuselage.
❑Using a 13/64" drill bit, carefully drill two holes into the wing and through the plywood block inside the fuselage at
the intersecting marks you drew.
IMPORTANT
Drill both holes straight down through the wing, not at an angle.
❑Install the blind nuts into the bottoms of the holes.
☛Usea#2phillipsscrewdrivertotightenthe5mmx30mm
machine screw, thus drawing the blind nuts up into place.
IMPORTANT
Use a heavy piece of scrap material under the screw head as
shown, to prevent the screw from crushing the wood.

❑After installing the blind nuts, carefully apply a bead of Kwik Bond Thick C/A around the base of each blind nut,
being careful not to get any glue into the threads, to lock the blind nuts into place.
Step 3: Installing the Wing Bolt Doubler
❑Set the wing bolt doubler onto the bottom of the wing.
The rear edge of the doubler should be 1/16" in front of the
trailing edge of the wing and the centerline of the doubler
should be lined up with the centerline of the wing.
☛The groove in the doubler (centerline) should face away
from the surface of the wing.
❑While holding the doubler in place, use a pencil to draw an outline of the doubler onto the wing's surface.
❑Remove the doubler from the wing.
❑Using a modeling knife, cut away and remove the
covering material from inside the outline.
IMPORTANT
Never glue anything directly to covering material. For the
strongest bond, always remove the covering from the gluing
surfaces.
❑Glue the doubler into place using Kwik Bond Thick C/A. Allow the glue to fully cure before proceeding.
❑After the C/A has cured, use a 13/64" drill bit to open the two wing mounting holes through the plywood doubler.
Use the holes drilled through the wing as a guide.
Step 4: Mounting the Wing
❑Set the wing back into the wing saddle and realign it.
❑Secure the wing into place using two 5mm x 30mm
machine screws and two 5mm flat washers.
☛Don't overtighten the screws. You don't want to crush
the wing.

Step 5: Installing the Leading Edge Fairing
❑Using a pair of scissors, carefully cut out the molded
plastic leading edge fairing around its outer edges.
☛Leave about 1/8" of plastic around the front edge of the
fairing to use as a gluing surface.
❑Test fit the fairing onto the wing. To align the fairing
properly,thefrontofthefairingshould beevenwiththeedges
of the leading edge support, and the back and sides of the
fairing should fit flush against the wing's surface.
☛You may need to trim the fairing in small increments,
checkingthefit betweeneachcut, untilyou aresatisfiedwith
the fit.
❑When satisfied with the fit, use 220 grit sandpaper to smooth the edges of the fairing.
❑Apply a thin bead of Formula 560 Canopy Glue to only the gluing surfaces of the fairing. Set the fairing back into
place and realign it. Remove any excess glue using a wet paper towel and use pieces of masking tape to hold the fairing
in place until the glue dries completely.
☛When using Formula 560 Canopy Glue to bond plastic parts to film covering, it is not necessary to remove the
covering first.
WARNING
Make sure not to get any glue between the leading edge support and the fuselage.
❑After the glue has completely dried, remove the masking tape, but leave the wing on the fuselage for now.

Step 1: Assembling the Radiator Scoop
❑Usinga pairof scissors,cut outtheradiator backsection
along the molded scribe lines.
❑Test fit each balsa support brace into the inside of the
scoop. The bottom of each brace should be flush with the
bottom edges of the scoop.
☛You may need to sand the ends of each brace so they
don't distort the scoop.
❑When satisfied with the fit, glue each support brace into place using Kwik Bond 5 Minute Epoxy. Make sure to
quickly remove any excess epoxy and hold the braces in place using a couple of pieces of masking tape until the epoxy
sets up.
IMPORTANT
Beforeusing epoxyto glueanythingto plastic,use220 gritsandpaper tolightlysand thegluingsurfaceof theplastic.This
will roughen up the smooth surface, resulting in a much better bonding area for the epoxy.

❑Test fit the plywood support brace to the front of the
radiatorbacksection. Thereshouldbea 1/16"spacebetween
the edge of the brace and the bottom of the scoop.
☛The ends of the brace should be nearly flush with the
sides of the scoop.
❑Whensatisfied withthe fit,gluethe supportbraceinto placeusing KwikBond5 MinuteEpoxy. Make sureto quickly
remove any excess epoxy and hold the brace in place with masking tape until the epoxy sets up.
❑Using a pair of scissors cut out the radiator front section along the molded scribe line. Sand the back edge of the
scoop smooth and straight using 220 grit sandpaper with a sanding block.
❑Push the front and back radiator sections together. The
two parts should fit together firmly with few or no gaps
between them.
❑When satisfied with the fit, glue the sections together
using Kwik Bond 5 Minute Epoxy. Make sure to quickly
remove any excess epoxy and hold the parts in place with
masking tape until the epoxy fully cures.
Step 2: Installing the Radiator Scoop
❑Oncetheepoxyhascured,removethemaskingtapefrom
the radiator scoop.
❑Usingamodelingknife,cutawaytherearportionofeach
balsa support brace so they will not interfere with the wing
bolt doubler on the wing.

❑Setthe scooponto thewing andalign itwith thefuselage.
☛The sides of the scoop should be even with the sides of
the fuselage and there should be a 1/64" gap between the
backof thescoop andthefuselage. The bottomofthe scoop
should fit tightly against the bottom of the wing.
❑While holding the scoop in alignment, use a pencil to
outline the scoop onto the wing.
❑Using a modeling knife, remove the covering from
inside the outline.
❑Using a 3/8" drill bit, drill two holes through the scoop
at the locations you marked.
❑Set the scoop back into place and realign it.
❑Using a pencil, mark the locations of the two wing bolts onto the bottom of the scoop.

❑Using a pair of scissors, cut out the back of the scoop to
allowroom foryoutoinstall andretrievethe wingboltsfrom
the wing.
❑Glue the radiator scoop into place using Kwik Bond 5 Minute Epoxy. Remove any excess epoxy using a paper towel
and rubbing alcohol, and hold the scoop firmly in place until the epoxy sets up.

Make sure you don't get epoxy between the wing and the fuselage.

SECTION 4: INSTALLING THE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER
YOU'LL NEED THE FOLLOWING SUPPLIES:
❑220 Grit Sandpaper w/Sanding Block
❑Masking Tape

❑Rubbing Alcohol
❑NHP Epoxy Mixing Sticks
❑NHP Epoxy Mixing Cups
❑Using a modeling knife, remove the covering material from the horizontal stabilizer mounting slot in the fuselage.
The slot is 4-1/4" long and 5/16" wide. The front of the slot is 6-7/8" in front of the trailing edge of the fuselage.
❑Remove the two elevator halves and the hinges from the stabilizer and set them aside for now.
Step 1: Aligning the Horizontal Stabilizer
❑Slide the stabilizer into the mounting slot. To align the
stabilizer, start by doing the following:
❑Centerthe stabilizerfrom sideto sideinthe slot. Ifyou
measure from each side of the fuselage to each tip of the
stabilizer, both measurements will be the same when the
stabilizer is centered.

❑When you are satisfied that the stabilizer is centered,
use a pencil to draw a couple of marks on each side of the
stabilizer where it and the back of the fuselage sides meet.
❑With the back of the stabilizer aligned with the marks you drew, use a T-pin to secure the stabilizer to the fuselage at
the trailing edge only.
☛The front of the stabilizer should be able to pivot from side to side and the back should stay firmly in place.
❑Using a ruler, measure the distance between the tips of
the stabilizer and the tips of the wing. Pivot the front of the
stabilizer until both of these measurements are equal.
❑When you are satisfied that the stabilizer is aligned, use a pencil to draw a couple of marks on each side of the front
of the stabilizer where it and the fuselage sides meet, then use a couple of pieces of masking tape to hold the stabilizer
firmly in place.
❑With the stabilizer held firmly in place, look from the
frontoftheairplaneatboththe wingandthestabilizer. When
aligned properly, the stabilizer should be parallel with the
wing.
IMPORTANT
If the stabilizer is out of alignment, remove it and use 220 grit sandpaper with a sanding block to sand down the higher side
of the stabilizer mounting slot, then reinstall the stabilizer and check the alignment once more. Repeat this procedure until
you are satisfied with the alignment.

Step 2: Mounting the Horizontal Stabilizer
❑With the stabilizer properly aligned, use a pencil to draw a line on each side of the stabilizer where it meets the
fuselage sides. Do this on both the top and bottom.
❑Remove the stabilizer.
❑Using a modeling knife, cut away and remove the
covering from between the lines you drew.
WARNING
When cutting through the covering to remove it, cut with
only enough pressure to cut through only the covering
itself. Cutting down into the balsa structure could weaken
the stabilizer and cause it to fail during flight.
❑Apply a generous amount of Kwik Bond 30 Minute Epoxy to only the top and bottom of the gluing surface on the
stabilizer.
☛Because the stabilizer has to slide into place through the fuselage, applying epoxy only to the stabilizer will prevent
the epoxy from spreading over the entire length of one half of the stabilizer when you slide it into place.
❑Slide the stabilizer into place and realign it, double checking all of your measurements once more before the epoxy
setsup. Quicklyremovethe excessepoxy anduse piecesof maskingtape tohold thestabilizer inplace untilthe epoxyhas
fully cured.
❑After the epoxy has cured, remove the masking tape and look closely at the glue joint. If there are any gaps between
the stabilizer and the fuselage, fill them using Kwik Bond 30 Minute Epoxy for added strength.

❑Using a modeling knife, remove the covering material from the vertical stabilizer mounting slot in the fuselage. The
slot is 6-1/4" long and 5/16" wide. The front of the slot is 6-1/4" in front of the trailing edge of the fuselage.
❑Remove the rudder and the hinges from the stabilizer and set them aside for now.
Step 1: Aligning the Vertical Stabilizer
