Sukhoi is synonymous with performance. From high performance military aircraft like
the Su-27 to the aerobatic flagship Su-31, airshow spectators all over the world have
witnessed exciting, cutting edge performance by aircraft bearing the Sukhoi name. The
Su-26 put Sukhoi on the map for performance Russian aircraft. Later versions such as the
Su-31 continue to awe and inspire flight hungry folks today. But unlike its single place
counterparts, the Su-29, with its power and almost frightening roll rate is one of the few
aerobatic aircraft made for two passengers. The longer canopy and much less curved
landing gear give the Su-29 a very unique look. In modeling, the Su-29 is very rare
indeed. It is not the cliche of the field. This Sukhoi is no slouch either. Great power to
weight ratio and a light wing loading make this ARF a true high performance 40 class
aircraft. The Modeltech Su-29 ARF was developed for modelers, by modelers. The fiber-
glass cowling, preformed aluminum landing gear and fully adjustable tail wheel assem-
bly are just a few examples of the high quality that will give your Sukhoi longevity that no
"plastic" ARF plane can provide. An all wood airframe covered with iron-on polyester
covering means maintenance and repairs are now possible. Its built with the same quali-
ties hobbyists want in any kit they would build themselves. From all of us at Modeltech,

**SUGGESTION** To avoid scratching your new airplane, do not unwrap the pieces until they are
needed for assembly. Cover your workbench with an old towel or brown paper, both to protect the aircraft
and to protect the table. Keep a couple of jars or bowls handy to hold the small parts after you open the
bags.
**NOTE** Please trial fit all the parts. Make sure you have the correct parts and that they fit and are
aligned properly before gluing! This will assure proper assembly. Since the Sukhoi is hand made from
natural materials, every plane is unique and minor adjustments may have to be made. However, you
should find the fit superior and assembly simple.

o1) Lookatthefaceofeach root rib onboth
winghalves. Noticehowtheexcesscoveringma-
terialoverlapsontothem. Usingamodelingknife,
carefullycutawaythecoveringfromboth of the
root ribs. Leave about 1/16” of covering over-
lappingsoitdoesnotpullaway.
Itisimportantthatthecoveringberemoved
fromthe root ribs. Thiswill ensure anad-
equate wood-to-wood glue joint and prevent
wingfailureduringflight.
o2) Using a ruler and a pen, locate and
mark the centerlineof the wing dihedral brace
(W-36). Draw a vertical line at this location
on each side. See photo # 1 below.

o3) Test fit the dihedral brace into the ply-
wood box in each wing half. The brace should
slideinto eachwinghalfuptothecenterline. Ifit
doesnot, remove the brace andlightly sand the
edgesandtipsuntiltheproperfitisobtained. See
photo# 2below.

The dihedral brace is cut in the shape of a
"V"on the bottomandis flat onthetop. It
shouldbeinstalledwiththeflatsidefacingthetop
ofthewingtoformtheproperdihedralanglewhen
thewinghalves are joined.
o4) Testfitbothof the wing halvestogether
withthedihedralbracetemporarilyinstalled. Do
notglueitinatthistime! Thewinghalvesshould
fittogethertightlywithlittleornogapsinthecenter
sectionjoint. Ifthecentersectionjointisnottight,
removethewinghalvesandlightlysandtheedges
andtips of thedihedralbrace. Reinstallthewing
halvesandbraceandtestthefituntilyouaresatis-
fied withthe fitofthewinghalves.
o5) When satisfied with the fit of the wing
halves,removethehalvesandthedihedralbrace.

o6) Mix a generous amount of Kwik Bond
30MinuteEpoxy. Workingwith only one wing
halffornow,applyathinlayerofepoxyinsidethe
plywooddihedralbrace box andononly half of
the dihedral brace. Make sure to cover the top
andbottom aswell as the sides anduse enough
epoxytofill anygaps.
o7) Slidethedihedralbraceintotheplywood
box up to the centerline. Remove any excess
epoxybeforeitdriesusingapapertowelandrub-
bing alcohol. Allow the epoxy to cure before
proceeding. Seephoto #3below.

o8) Once the epoxy has cured, trial fit both
winghalvestogethertodoublecheckthatthewing
halvesstillfitcorrectly.
o9) MixagenerousamountofKwikBond30
MinuteEpoxy. Applyathinlayerofepoxytothe
exposed half ofthe dihedral brace, the inside of
theplywoodbox inthesecondwinghalf andthe
entiresurfaceofbothrootribs. Make sure to
useenoughepoxy to fillanygaps.
o10) Slidethetwowinghalves together and
carefullyalignthemattheleadingandtrailingedges.
Wipeawayanyexcessepoxyusingapapertowel
andrubbingalcohol. Usemaskingtapetoholdthe
winghalves in placeuntil the epoxycures. See
photo#4below.

o11) When the epoxy has cured, double
check the center section joint. If any gaps are
present, mix a small amount of Kwik Bond 30
MinuteEpoxyandcarefullyfillanyremaininggaps.
Allowthe epoxytofullycurebeforeproceeding.

o1) Placethewingintothewingsaddlemak-
ingsurethatthetwopreinstalleddowelsinthelead-
ingedgeofthewingfullyengagethepredrilledholes
intheforwardbulkheadinthefuselage. Pushthe
wingasfarforwardaspossible. Theleadingedge
shouldfittightagainstthebulkhead.
It may be necessary to sand the forward
sectionofthewing to fit the fuselagesides.
Ifso, use220 grit sandpaper.
o2) Using a ruler and a pen, measure and
place a mark on the centerline of the bottom of
thefuselageatthe rear of thewingsaddle. Also
measureandplace a markatthecenterlineofthe
wingatthetrailingedge.
o3) With the wing inthe wing saddle,align
the two centerline marks and hold the wing
securely in place using a couple of pieces of
masking tape. See photo #5 below.

o4) Remove theaileronsfromthe wing. To
doublecheckthatthewingissquare to the fuse-
lage,usearuler and measure from eachwingtip
tothe rear edgeof the fuselage. Bothmeasure-
ments should be equal. Seefigure#1 below.

o5) Whensatisfied withthealignmentofthe
wingtothefuselage,holdthewingfirmlyinplace
andusea7/64”drillbitanddrilltwoholesthrough
thewingandonthroughtheplywood wing hold
downblockinsidethefuselage. Thetwoholesare
located1”infromtheoutsideedgeofeachsideof
thefuselageand5/8”forwardofthetrailingedge.
o6) Removethewingfromthewingsaddle.
Drilloutonlytheholesintheplywoodwinghold
downblockusinga 1/4” drill bit.
Drillingoutonlytheseholeswillalloweasier
installationoftheblindnutsinthenextstep.
o7) Installthe two5mmblindnutsfromun-
derneaththeplywoodwingholddownblock. The
blindnuts canbeinstalledusingpliersbyfirstre-
moving the portion of the balsa filler block di-
rectlyabove wherethe blindnuts are installed.

o8) Place the wing back into the wing
saddle, aligning the centerline marks. While
holding the wing firmly in place, set the wing
bolt doubler in place. The rear edge of the
doubler should be 1/8” forward of the trailing
edge of the wing and the sides of the doubler
should be centered over the centerline of the
wing. See photo # 7 below.

o13) Place the wing back into the wing
saddle. Secure the wing in place using the two
5mm x 30mm machine screws and two 5mm
flatwashers.

paper with a sanding block to shape the blocks

o10) Removethedoubler. Usingamodeling
knife,carefullyremovethecoveringfromjustin-
sidetheoutline.
o11) MixupasmallamountofKwikBond5
MinuteEpoxyanduseittogluethewingdoubler
tothewing. Allowthe epoxy to fully cure.
o12) Removethewinganddrillouttheholes
throughthe doubler usinga 7/64” drillbit. Use
the holes already drilled through the wing as a
guide.

o2) Whensatisfiedwiththefitofeachblock,
use220 grit sandpaperand roughen thesurface
ofthebellypanwhereeachblockwillbeglued.
Rougheningthesurfaceofthefiberglassbelly
panwillhelpstrengthenthebondbetween
the epoxy and the fiberglass and prevent the
blocks from breaking off after they have been
gluedinplace.
o3) Mixup asmallamountofKwikBond 5
MinuteEpoxy. Workingwithonemountingblock
at a time, glue the block into the belly pan and
hold it in place with masking tape. When you
havegluedinallfourblocks,allowthe assembly
tofullycurebefore proceeding.

o4) Removethemaskingtapefromthefour
mountingblocks. Trialfitthetwo balsa triangle
supports(D-33)to the insideedgesof each side
of the belly pan. The triangle supports should
also be centered in the belly pan. Use 220 grit
sandpaperwitha sanding blocktoshape the tri-
anglestock tomatchthecontourofthebellypan.
Thetopedgeofthetrianglestockshouldbeflush
withthebottomedgeofthebellypan. Seephoto
#9 below.
o5) Whensatisfiedwiththefitofthetriangle
stock, use 220 grit sandpaper and roughen the
surfaceofthebelly pan where it willbeglued.
Rougheningthesurfaceofthefiberglassbelly
panwillhelpstrengthenthe bond between
theepoxyand the fiberglass andpreventthe tri-
anglestock frombreakingoffaftertheyhasbeen
gluedinplace.
o6) Mixupasmallamountof Kwik Bond 5
Minute Epoxy. Working with one piece of tri-
anglestockatatime,gluethestock intothebelly
panandholditinplacewithmasking tape. After
youhavegluedboth pieces in, allowtheassem-
blytofully cure beforeproceeding.
ALIGNINGTHEBELLYPAN
o7) Remove the masking tape from the tri-
anglestock. Withthe wingsecurelyattachedto
thefuselage,trialfitthebellypantothebottomof
thewing. The sides ofthebelly pan, atboththe
frontandtherear,shouldbeflush with the sides
ofthefuselage. Thecurve at the rear ofthebelly
panshouldalsobe flush with the curveofthefu-
selagebottom.
Youmayfindit necessarytopressthesides
ofthebellypanagainstthewingsurfaceto
helpinalignment. Theedgesofthebellypanmay
also need adjustment. If so, carefully sand the
edgesusing220gritsandpaperuntilyouaresat-
isfiedwiththefit.
o8) Usinga modelingknife,removethepor-
tionoftherearmountingblocksthatinterferewith
thewingboltdoublerandwingmountingscrews.
o9) Whensatisfiedwiththefit,holdthebelly
panin placeusing piecesof masking tape. See
photo# 10below.

o10) Withthebellypanheldfirmlyinplaceand
alignedproperly,useapenandoutlinetheoutside
edgesofthebellypanontothewingsurface.
o11) Removethe belly pan. Using thelines
asa guide usea modeling knifeandremove the
coveringfrom betweenthem.
Removingthecoveringwillallowastronger
bond between the belly pan and the wing
whenthebellypan is glued in place.
o12) Mix up a generous amount of Kwik
Bond 30 Minute Epoxy. Apply a thin layer of
epoxyto thebottom portionof each of the four
mountingblocksandbothtrianglesupports. Care-
fullysetthe belly panbackin place onthewing
andalignitasyoudidpreviously. Holdthebelly

of the slot. Make sure the notch in the leading
edgeofthestabilizerfullyengagesthepreinstalled
blockatthe front oftheslot.
o5) Attachthewingtothefuselage. Alignthe
centerlinemark on topof the stabilizerwiththe
centerlineofthefuselageattherear. Whenthatis
alignedholdthestabilizerinthatpositionusingaT-
pinandalignthehorizontalstabilizerwiththewing.
Whenviewedfrom therear,thehorizontalstabi-
lizershouldbelevelwiththewing. Ifitisnotlevel,

o10) Securethefueltank in place usingsev-
eral pieces of foam rubber. Seal any gaps be-
tweenthestopperassemblyandthefirewallusing
silicon sealer. Be careful not to get any sealer
insidethealuminumtubing.

o1) Locateanddrill a 3/32”holethroughthe
firewall for the throttle pushrod wire to pass
through(youmayneedtotemporarilyremovethe
engine). Theholeshouldbelevelwiththethrottle
arm,butmay need to bemovedslightly to clear
thefueltank depending ontheengineused.
Becarefulnottodrillthroughthefueltank
thathasalready been installed.
o2) Slide the plain end of the pushrod wire
throughtheholeandintothefuselage. Remove
the throttle arm from the carburetor and attach
theZ-bendto the outerholein the arm.
o3) Reattachthe throttlearmtothecarbure-
toranduseapairofpliersto makeanynecessary
bends in the wire so it does not bind when the
carburetorismovedfromtheidletothefullthrottle

willbe theelevatorandrudderservos.
Becausethesize of servosdiffer, you may
need to adjust the size of the precut open-
ings. Youmayalsoneed touseamodelingknife
andcutagroovetoallowroomfortheservowires.
o2) Installtheelevatorandrudderservosus-
ing the wood screws provided with your radio
system. Drill1/16” pilot holesthroughthe tray
beforeinstallingthescrews. This will help pre-
ventthe wood fromsplitting. Install the servos
withthe output shaftsin the orientationshown.

o3) Testfitthethrottleservobetweenthetwo
preinstalledservo railsjust behindthe forward
bulkhead. Theservoshould be mountedonthe
right side of the fuselage, about 1” in from the
insideedgeofthefuselageside,withtheoutput
shafttowardsthefrontoftheairplane. Seephoto

Becausethe size ofservosdiffer, you may
needtoadjustthewidthofthe rails. If nec-
essary, use a modeling knife to trim the inside
edgesoftherails to fit theservo.
o4) Installthethrottleservousingthewood
screws provided with your radio system. Drill
1/16”pilotholesthroughtherailsbeforeinstall-
ingthescrews. Thiswill help prevent thewood
fromsplitting.
INSTALLINGTHESERVOTRAY
o5) Trialfittheservotray,with theservosin-
stalled, into the fuselage. The front and rear of
thetrayhasprecutnotches that correspond with
notchesinthe rear bulkheadandthecenterbulk-
head. The servo output shafts should face the
frontoftheairplane.
o6) When satisfied with the fit, remove the
trayandmixupagenerousamountofKwikBond
5MinuteEpoxy. Gluethetrayinplace usingthe
epoxy. Allowtheepoxytocurefullybeforepro-
ceeding. Seephoto # 35below.

Tofacilitateservoremovalinthefuture,we
recommenddrillingaholethroughthewing
mountingbulkheadovereach rear servo mount-
ingscrew. Drilltheholenolargerthannecessary
forathin shanked screwdrivertofitthrough.

o7) Test fit the servo into the precut servo
holeinthe top sideofthewing. Theoutputshaft
shouldbe pointingtowards the leading edge of
thewing.
Becausethesize of servosdiffer, you may
need to adjust the size of the precut open-
ing. You may also needtouseamodeling knife
andcut agroovetoallowroomfortheservowire
toexitthehole.
o8) Removetheservo and position the two
servomountingplates(W-37)ontothewing. The
plates should be centered from side to side and
the inside edges should be even with the servo
opening. Seephoto #36below.

o9) Holdthetwoplatesinpositionand trace
aroundthem usingapen. Removetheplatesand
usingamodelingknife,removethecoveringfrom
justinsidethelines.
o10)Mix a small amount of Kwik Bond 5
MinuteEpoxy and gluethe plates inplace. Al-
lowtheepoxytocurecompletely.
o11) Install the servousingthe wood screws
providedwithyour radio system. Drill1/16”pi-
lotholesthroughthe plates before installingthe
screws. This will help prevent the wood from
splitting.

o1) Install one adjustable servo connector
throughthesecondholeoutfromthecenterofone

Removetheexcessmaterialfromtheservo arm
usingwirecutters. Seefigure#5below.

Afterinstallingtheadjustableservoconnec-
torapply a smalldrop of KwikBondThin
C/Ato the nut. This will preventthe connector
fromlooseningduringflight.
o2) Turnon theradio system. Check toen-
surethatthethrottleservooutputshaftis moving
inthecorrectdirection.
o3) Slide the adjustable servo connector/
throttlearmassembly overtheendofthethrottle
pushrodwire. Positionthethrottlestick and the
throttletrimattheirlowestpositions.
o4) Manuallypushthecarburetorbarrelfully
closed. Angletheservoarmbackabout30ºfrom
centerandattachittotheservo. The arm should
facetheleftsideoftheairplane(lookingfromthe
rear). With the carburetor barrel fully closed,
tightenthesetscrew in the adjustable servocon-
nector. Youwillneedtomakeabendinthepush-
rodwire toallow it to align withthe servo arm.

o5) Testthemovementof the throttlepush-
rod. Fullforwardstickandfullforwardtrimshould
resultinthecarburetorbarrelopeningcompletely.
Fullbackstickandfullforwardtrimshouldresult
inthe approximateidle setting. Full back stick
andfulldowntrimshouldresultinthecarburetor
barrelclosingfully.
o6) Whensatisfied thatthepushrodlinkage
is adjusted correctly and no binding is present,
installthe servoarm setscrew and remove any
excesspushrodwireusing wire cutters.

the rudder and into the backplate. Tighten the
screws,butdonot overtighten them. Youdonot
wantto crush thewood.

(D-34). Thedowelshould be9-3/4”long. Ifitis
longer,useamodelingknifeand cutthedowelto
theproperlength.
o5) Using a ruler and a pen, measure in 1”
fromonlyoneendofthedowelandplaceamark.
Using a 3/32” drill bit, drill a hole completely
throughthedowelatthismark. Usingamodeling
knife,cutagroovefromtheholeouttotheendof
the dowel. See figure # 7 below.

o7) Install the 90º bend in the wire into the
holein the wooddowel. Thewire should layin
thegrooveaswell.
o8) Holdingthewireinplace,apply a small
amountofKwikBondThinC/Ato the wire and
dowel. Allow the glue to cure, then wrap the
wiretothedowelusing1/2AFlyingLineorsimi-
lar thread. Apply more thin C/A to the thread,
wireand dowel andallowthe glue tocure. The
wireshouldbesolidlyattachedtothedowel. See
figure#9 below.
o6) Using a pair of pliers, bend one 2mm x
210mmthreadedwiretothe correct dimension.

o9) Usingarulerandapen,measurein1-7/8”
from the opposite end of the dowel and place a
mark. Using a 3/32” drill bit, drill a hole com-
pletelythroughthedowel at this mark. The hole
shouldbeparallelwiththefirstholeyoudrilled.
Useamodelingknife and cut agroovefromthe
holeoutto the endofthedowel.
o10) Trialfitthe2mmx90wirewithL-bends
atbothendsintothe hole you justdrilled. Usea
rulerand measurefrom the L-bend to thetip of
thethreadedwire. The measurement shouldbe
18-3/8”. Ifitisnot, make any necessaryadjust-
mentsuntilthe propermeasurementisachieved.

faceofthehorizontalstabilizer. The exit should
be3/32”talland1-3/16” long. The rear edgeof
theexit islocated4-7/8”forwardoftherearedge
of the fuselage. Seefigure#10 below.
