This assembly manual is designed to guide you through the entire assembly process of your new airplane in the least amount of time
possible. Along the way you'll learn how to properly assemble your new airplane and also learn tips that will help you in the future.
We have listed some of our recommendations below. Please read through them before beginning assembly.
lPlease read through each step before beginning assembly. You
should nd the layout very complete and straightforward. Our goal
is to guide you through assembly without any of the headaches
and hassles that you might expect.

The Sukhoi SU-31 Prole 3D ARF can be own using either a two-stroke or a four-stroke engine. We suggest
using a .40 - .52 size two-stroke engine or a .70 size four-stroke engine. The airplane will y great using
any engine within the recommended size range, although for the best aerobatic performance we suggest
using an engine at the upper end of the size range. For 3D ying, you'll get the best performance using a
lightweight yet powerful engine, such as the Magnum XLS .52A two-stroke engine
matched with a large diameter, low pitch propeller, such as the APC 12.25 x 3.75
composite propeller.
For the best ight performance, we suggest trying to keep the ready-to-y weight
of the airplane as light as possible. Using an engine that's bigger than recommended will only add extra
weight to the airplane, negating any of the extra power from the larger engine. In most cases, you'll get
better ight performance from a lightweight, but powerful engine than from simply a higher displacement
engine. 

To get the most out of the airplane, we suggest using a four or more channel
computer radio system with mixing capabilities. Since the ailerons use separate
servos, they can be plugged separately into the receiver, allowing you the
capability of aperon and spoileron mixing, differential mixing and aperon/spoileron
to elevator mixing. The transmitter should also feature dual rates and exponential
adjustments. Most computer radio systems will include all these features, plus
many more. We really like the Hitec Eclipse 7 FM system.
Standard servos can be used on the ight-control surfaces, although we do recommend using the ball bearing type. For throttle
control, a standard non-ball bearing standard servo can be used. We recommend using Cirrus CS601 Standard Ball Bearing servos.
These servos have a ball-bearing-supported output shaft and produce 75oz/in of torque.
Although you would lose mixing capabilities, the airplane can be own using a basic four-channel radio control system. If you do this,
you will need to use a servo Y-Harness to join the two aileron servos together.
There really isn't much else that you'll need to nish the airplane. Most of the hardware is included, so about the only thing else you'll
need is a spinner, servo extension leads and typical modeling supplies, such as foam rubber to protect your receiver and battery,
and fuel tubing.
IMPORTANT The Cirrus servos are compatible with all receiver types. The Cirrus servo extensions are compatible with Hitec and JR radio
control systems. These servo extensions are also available with connectors that are compatible with Futaba and Airtronics radio control systems.
The Magnum spinner includes a 1/4 - 28 adapter nut.

The covering material used on your airplane is real iron-on, heat-shrink covering material. It is possible with heat and humidity changes
that the covering material on your airplane may wrinkle or sag. This trait is inherent in all types of heat-shrink material. To remove
any wrinkles that might be visible you will need to use a heat-sealing covering iron.
Follow this simple procedure to remove the wrinkles:
❑Plug in and turn on the sealing iron to the medium-high temperature setting. Allow the sealing iron to heat up for approximately
5 - 7 minutes.
❑After the sealing iron has reached temperature, lightly apply the sealing iron to the wrinkled section of the covering material. Move
the sealing iron slowly over the wrinkled section until the covering material tightens and the wrinkles disappear.

lDuring the covering process, sometimes color may smear slightly from the seams. If you see any smeared colors on the covering
material, they can be quickly removed by simply wiping them off with a paper towel and a small amount of Acetone.
l Make sure to test-t the parts together before applying glue. This will ensure that the parts t properly before gluing them
together.
lWhen gluing anything that has a smooth surface, it's important to lightly roughen the gluing surfaces with 220 grit sandpaper. This
will allow the glue to stick better. Also, never glue directly to the covering material. Always remove the covering material from the
gluing surfaces prior to gluing the parts together.
lWhen cutting away the covering material from the gluing surfaces, be careful to cut only through the covering material. Try not to
cut down into the balsa structure because that can compromise the integrity of the airframe.
lWe do not suggest storing your airplane in an extremely hot environment (like the back of your car in direct sunlight) for any length
of time. The extreme heat could cause the covering material to wrinkle or sag and possibly damage the fragile components of the
radio control system.
lEpoxy can be cleaned up before it dries using rubbing alcohol, and C/A can be cleaned up before it dries using C/A Debonder.

A NOTE ABOUT COVERING MATERIAL
IMPORTANT You will notice that the color of the covering material will darken when it is heated. When the covering material
cools back down, it will return to its normal color. If the color layer smears from any of the seams the temperature of the sealing
iron is too hot. Turn the temperature dial down and wait about 5 minutes for the sealing iron to adjust to the lower temperature.
You can remove any excess color streaks using a paper towel soaked with a small quantity of Acetone.

❑Remove the ailerons from the wing and set them aside for now.
❑Carefully measure and draw a centerline mark on the top of the wing at
the leading edge.
WING INSTALLATION
STEP 1: ALIGNING THE WING
❑Measure out 1/4" (6mm) to the right and to the left of the centerline mark
(C/L) and draw two more marks (A).
IMPORTANT These two outer marks represent the sides of the fuselage
and will be used to center the wing.

❑Slide the wing into the fuselage and line up the two outer marks with the
sides of the fuselage.
❑With the front of the wing held in place and prevented from moving laterally,
carefully measure from each wing tip to the back edge of the fuselage sides
to verify that the wing is square to the fuselage. If the measurements are not
the same, carefully move the back of the wing right or left until they are.
❑ When satised with the alignment, draw a mark on the top of the wing,
next to each side of the fuselage, then use a couple of T-Pins to hold the
back of the wing in place.
❑ Once you're satised that the wing is centered and that it's square to the
fuselage, draw a line on each side of the wing where it meets the fuselage.
Do this on both the top and the bottom.
❑ When satised with the alignment, hold the front of the wing in place,
using a couple of T-Pins.
IMPORTANT The two outer marks that you drew should be even with
the sides of the fuselage. This will ensure that the wing is centered at
the front.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE WING
❑Remove the wing from the fuselage, then carefully cut away the covering
material from inside the lines you drew. Remove the covering material from
both the top and the bottom of the wing.
IMPORTANT Be careful to cut only through the covering material. Try
not to cut down into the balsa structure.

❑Use a heat-sealing iron to adhere the covering material down where you
cut it.
☞This will keep the covering material from wrinkling or pulling loose while
you install the wing.
❑Slide the wing into the fuselage up to the edge of the gluing strip.
❑Apply a generous amount of 30 minute epoxy to the gluing surfaces on
both the top and the bottom of the wing, then slide the wing into place and
realign it.
❑Wipe away any excess epoxy, then double-check that the wing is aligned
correctly. Use a builder's triangle to ensure that the wing is perpendicular to
the fuselage side, too.

PRO TIP Don't apply epoxy to the fuselage before sliding the wing into the fuselage. Slide the wing into the fuselage rst, then
apply epoxy only to the wing, as described in the remaining procedures below. This will prevent the epoxy from spreading over
the entire length of one half of the wing when you slide it into place.
❑ After the epoxy has fully cured, look closely at the glue joint. If there are any gaps between the wing and the fuselage, ll them,
using 30 minute epoxy for added strength.
❑Apply a strip of masking tape to the top and bottom of one half of the
wing. Align the edge of the masking tape with the outline that you drew
previously.
IMPORTANT The masking tape will make it easier to clean up the epoxy
when you install the wing.


STABILIZER INSTALLATION

❑Carefully measure and draw a centerline mark on the top of the stabilizer
at the trailing edge.
❑Remove the elevator from the stabilizer and set it aside for now.
❑Slide the stabilizer into the fuselage and center it at only the trailing edge
by carefully centering the mark you drew on the stabilizer with the center
of the stabilizer mounting slot. Also, make sure that the stabilizer is pushed
forward as far as possible.
❑Measure the distance between the tips of the stabilizer and the tips of
the wing. Pivot the front of the stabilizer until both of these measurements
are equal.
☞When both of these measurements are equal, you're assured that the
stabilizer is square to the wing.
❑Look from the front of the airplane at both the wing and the stabilizer.
When aligned properly, the stabilizer should be parallel to the wing.
❑When the stabilizer is square to the wing, use a T-Pin to hold the front of
the stabilizer rmly in place and aligned.
STEP 1: ALIGNING THE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER
❑ When satised that the trailing edge of the stabilizer is centered, hold
only the trailing edge in place, using a T-Pin.
IMPORTANT The front of the stabilizer should be able to pivot from side
to side and the back should stay rmly in place and aligned. The trailing
edge should not be allowed to move from side to side.

❑ Once you're satised with the alignment, draw a line on each side of
the stabilizer where it meets the fuselage. Do this on both the top and the
bottom.
❑Remove the stabilizer from the fuselage, then carefully cut away the
covering material from inside the lines you drew. Remove the covering
material from both the top and the bottom of the stabilizer.
❑As you did with the wing, use a heat-sealing iron to adhere the covering
material down where you cut it.
❑Apply a strip of masking tape to the top and bottom of one half of the
stabilizer and to the top and bottom of one side of the stabilizer mounting slot.
❑Partially slide the stabilizer into the stabilizer mounting slot.
❑Apply a generous amount of 30 minute epoxy to the gluing surfaces of the stabilizer, then push the stabilizer into place and realign
it, double-checking all of your measurements once more before the epoxy sets up.
❑ After the epoxy has fully cured, look closely at the glue joint. If there are any gaps between the stabilizer and the fuselage, ll
them, using 30 minute epoxy for added strength.
❑Push the stabilizer down into the mounting slot in the fuselage. To align
it properly, the stabilizer should be pushed down rmly and the trailing edge
of the stabilizer should be even with the back edge of the fuselage.
❑Remove the rudder from the stabilizer and set it aside for now.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER
❑Slide the elevator into the stabilizer mounting slot, making sure that the
top of the elevator is toward the top of the fuselage.
IMPORTANT You must slide the elevator into the stabilizer mounting slot
before installing the stabilizer. If you don't, it will be impossible to install
the elevator after the stabilizer is installed.
STEP 3: ALIGNING AND INSTALLING THE VERTICAL STABILIZER

❑ Once you're satised with the alignment, draw a line on each side of the
stabilizer where it meets the fuselage.
❑Glue the stabilizer into the fuselage, using the same techniques that you used to glue the horizontal stabilizer into the fuselage.

lThe airplane uses C/A-style hinges to hinge the control surfaces. These hinges are designed to be glued into place using thin C/A.
Do not glue the hinges into place using any other type of glue, such as thick C/A or epoxy. Use of any adhesive other than thin C/A
could result in failure of the hinges during ight.
l For utter-free control surfaces and crisp control response, it is imperative that the hinges be glued in properly. This is achieved
by having a tight hinge gap (no more than 1/32" (.7mm) wide) and using plenty of thin C/A glue. Poor hinge installation can lead to
control surface utter, which can result in a catastrophic failure of the airframe.
lIf the hinge(s) can't be pushed in far enough to achieve the proper hinge gap, you'll need to use a modeling knife to cut the hinge
slot(s) deeper.
❑Remove the stabilizer from the fuselage, then carefully cut away the
covering material from below the lines you drew. Remove the covering
material from the bottom of the stabilizer, too.
❑As you did with the wing, use a heat-sealing iron to adhere the covering
material down where you cut it.
PRO TIP Don't remove the covering material from the back edge of the
stabilizer.

CONTROL SURFACE HINGING
STEP 1: HINGING THE AILERONS
❑Push two T-Pins through the center of four C/A-style hinges.
PRO TIP The T-Pins will keep the hinges centered and square to
the hinge line while you are hinging the aileron.

❑Push the aileron and hinges into the corresponding four hinge slots in
the trailing edge of the wing.
❑While holding the aileron tight against the trailing edge, pivot the aileron
down 45º and apply 5-6 drops of thin C/A to the exposed area of each hinge,
then turn the wing over and repeat for the other side of the hinges.
❑Allow the C/A to dry for about 15 minutes, then pivot the aileron up and down several times to free up the hinges. Repeat the
previous procedures to hinge the second aileron to the other half of the wing, making sure to check the integrity of the hinges after
the C/A fully cures by gently pulling on the ailerons. The last thing you want is for a hinge to come loose during ight.
❑Remove the T-Pins and push the aileron up against the trailing edge. There should be no more than a 1/32" (.7mm) wide hinge
gap and the tip of the aileron should be even with the wing tip.
❑Slide one hinge into each of the four hinge slots in one aileron, making
sure that you push each hinge in up to the T-Pins.
IMPORTANT Don't glue the hinges into the aileron yet.
STEP 2: HINGING THE ELEVATOR
❑Hinge the elevator to the stabilizer, using four hinges. Use the same
techniques that you used to hinge the ailerons to the wing.
IMPORTANT Make sure to check the integrity of the hinges after the
C/A fully cures.
STEP 3: HINGING THE RUDDER
❑Hinge the rudder to the stabilizer and the fuselage, using three hinges.
Use the same techniques that you used to hinge the ailerons and the
elevator.
IMPORTANT Make sure to check the integrity of the hinges after the
C/A fully cures.

❑Cut a piece of covering material 1" (25mm) wide and the same length as
the aileron hinge line.
❑Fold the length of covering material in half lengthwise so that there is a
sharp crease down the middle of the covering material.
IMPORTANT It is imperative that the aileron and elevator hinge gaps be sealed. Failure to do this can lead to control surface utter,
which can cause your airplane to crash. Sealing the hinge gaps will also provide crisper control response and allow the airplane to
track straighter and y truer, making trimming much easier. 
☞Only the bottom of the hinge gap needs to be sealed. It is not necessary
to seal both the bottom and the top.
❑Remove the protective backing from the covering material. With the
control surface fully deected in the "UP" position, place the length of covering
material over the hinge line (on the bottom), making sure that the crease is
pushed completely down into the hinge line.
❑Pivot the aileron up and down several times to check for free movement, then repeat the previous procedures to seal the hinge
gap on the second aileron. The ailerons should be able to smoothly pivot completely up and completely down without interference
from the covering material.

ENGINE INSTALLATION


❑ Remove the mufer from your engine and set it aside.
IMPORTANT This section shows the installation of a two-stroke engine. Installation of a four-stroke engine uses the same techniques
and measurements.
❑Double-check that your engine is parallel to the top and bottom of the
engine mounting slot and that the depth of your engine is set correctly, then
mark the positions of the four mounting holes onto the fuselage side.
❑ Install the engine, using four M3 x 25mm socket-cap screws, four M3 at
washers and four M3 lock nuts.

STEP 1: ALIGNING THE ENGINE
❑Set the engine into the engine mounting slot on the right side of the
fuselage and adjust the depth of the engine, so that the front of the drive
washer is 1/2" (13mm) in front of the fuselage.
IMPORTANT If your engine's crankcase is wider than the engine
mounting slot, you will need to cut the engine mounting slot wider. If you
do, remove equal amounts of material from both the top and bottom and
be careful not to alter the thrust angle.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE ENGINE
❑Drill 5/64" (2mm) diameter pilot holes through the fuselage at the marks
you drew, then enlarge the pilot holes for the engine mounting screws, using
a 1/8" (3.2mm) diameter drill bit.
IMPORTANT Be careful that you drill the holes straight through the
fuselage and not at an angle.

❑Push the two aluminum tubes through the rubber stopper.
❑Slide the large diameter metal plate over the tubes at the front of the
rubber stopper, and slide the small diameter metal plate over the tubes at
the rear of the rubber stopper.
❑Measure the distance that the two aluminum tubes protrude from the front
of the stopper assembly. This distance should be 3/8" (10mm).
❑Secure one end of the silicone fuel tubing onto the end of the clunk.
❑Slide the silicone fuel tubing, with the clunk attached, onto the end of the
aluminum fuel pick-up tube (straight tube). Adjust the length of the silicone
tubing until the end of the clunk is 3-1/4" (83mm) back from the rear of the
stopper assembly.
IMPORTANT Discard the medium-length aluminum tube. It will not be used for our style of fuel tank setup.
❑Push the metal neck-reinforcement ring over the neck of the fuel tank
opening, then carefully push the stopper assembly into the fuel tank and rotate
it until the aluminum vent tube rests just below the top of the fuel tank.

STEP 1: ASSEMBLING THE RUBBER STOPPER
❑Carefully bend the longer of the two aluminum tubes up at a shallow
angle, being careful not to kink the tubing as you bend it.
IMPORTANT When the stopper assembly is installed in the fuel tank,
the top of the vent tube (the tube you just bent) should rest just below the
top of the fuel tank. The top of the fuel tank is a shorter distance from
the fuel tank opening than the bottom is.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE RUBBER STOPPER ASSEMBLY
❑ When satised with the alignment, install and tighten the M3 x 20mm machine screw until the rubber stopper expands and seals
the fuel tank opening.

❑With the stopper assembly installed, double-check to make sure that the clunk can move freely inside the fuel tank. Ideally, the
clunk should be about 1/4" (6mm) in front of the back of the fuel tank. This will ensure that the clunk can't get stuck in the fuel tank
during ight. Hold the fuel tank up to a bright light to make it easier to see the clunk inside.
❑Cut away the covering material from both sides of the four precut fuel tank
mounting slots in the fuselage. You should be able to see the two lower slots
underneath the covering material. The two upper slots are 2-1/4" (57mm)
above the lower slots.
❑Loop one nylon cable tie through the two front slots and one through the
two rear slots.
❑Cut away the covering material from over both sides of the throttle servo
mounting hole in the fuselage.
STEP 3: INSTALLING THE FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY
❑Slide the fuel tank into the loops you made with the cable ties, then align
the molded channels in the fuel tank with the cable ties and pull the cable
ties tightly to rmly secure the fuel tank to the fuselage.
IMPORTANT Make sure that the top of the fuel tank is toward the top
of the fuselage.

IMPORTANT Depending on the length of your throttle servo lead, you may need to use a 12" long servo extension lead to reach
the radio hatch.
❑Attach the Z-Bend in the pushrod wire into the outermost hole in the
throttle arm.
☞You may need to enlarge the hole in your engine's throttle arm, using a
5/64" (2mm) diameter drill bit, to accommodate the wire.
❑Cut away all but one arm from a "4-point" servo horn, then enlarge the
third hole in the servo arm, using a 5/64" (2mm) diameter drill bit.
❑Slide the adjustable pushrod connector assembly onto the pushrod wire,
then install the servo horn onto the servo, making sure that it's angled back
about 30 degrees.
❑While holding the carburetor fully closed, install and tighten the machine
screw in the adjustable pushrod connector.
❑Cut away the excess pushrod wire, then install and tighten the servo horn
retaining screw to hold the servo horn securely to the servo.
❑Connect your radio system and check that the throttle servo output shaft is rotating in the correct direction, then position the throttle
control stick and the throttle trim lever to their lowest positions.
❑Open and close the throttle several times to ensure that the carburetor opens and closes completely. You may need to adjust your
transmitter EPA settings to achieve perfect settings.
❑Install the throttle servo into the mounting hole on the right side of the
fuselage, making sure to drill 1/16" (1.6mm) diameter pilot holes for the
mounting screws.
IMPORTANT The servo output shaft should be toward the back of the
fuselage.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE ADJUSTABLE PUSHROD CONNECTOR
❑Install the adjustable pushrod connector onto the servo arm, making sure
not to tighten the nut too tightly. You don't want the pushrod connector loose,
but it should be able to rotate without binding.
IMPORTANT To prevent the nut from loosening during ight, apply a
drop of thin C/A to it. Allow the C/A to fully cure before proceeding.

STEP 1: INSTALLING THE SERVOS
❑Plug one 24" long servo extension onto both your elevator and rudder servos.
IMPORTANT To prevent the plugs from pulling apart during assembly, wrap the plugs with masking tape.
❑Install both the elevator and the rudder servos into the mounting holes
on the left side of the fuselage, making sure to drill 1/16" (1.6mm) diameter
pilot holes for the mounting screws.
IMPORTANT The rudder servo output shaft (the bottom servo) should
be toward the front of the fuselage. The elevator servo output shaft (the
top servo) should be toward the back of the fuselage.
