OCheck every bolt and every glue joint in the aircraft to ensure that everything is tight and well-bonded. This should include all of the
control surface hinges as well.
ODouble-check that you've installed and tightened all of the servo horn retaining screws.
ODouble-check that the receiver and battery are properly secured into place. There's nothing worse than the battery coming loose

OCheck the control surfaces. They should all move in the correct direction and not bind.

OCheck to ensure that all of the control surfaces are moving the proper amount in both low and high rate settings.
OCheck the receiver antenna wire. It should be fully extended and not coiled up inside the fuselage.
O Do not cut the receiver antenna wire shorter or the range of your radio control system will be greatly reduced.
OProperly balance the propeller. A propeller that is out of balance will cause excessive vibration, which could lead to engine and/or

WHAT RADIO CONTROL SYSTEM AND SERVOS SHOULD I USE?

For scale-like looks, sound and performance we suggest using a .52-.61 size four-stroke
engine. If you prefer to use a two-stroke engine, we suggest using a .40-.52 size
two-stroke engine.
Whether you're going to use a two-stroke engine or a four-stroke engine, the engine
should be mounted inverted.

The Blue Max V2 ARF will require the use of a 4-channel or more radio control system. A
standard radio control system or a more sophisticated computer radio control system would
work equally well. At a minimum, the transmitter should feature dual rates and servo reversing.
A standard-size receiver and airborne battery pack can be used as well.

servo extension to make is easier to plug the aileron servo into the receiver when you install

glow engine. You'll also need typical modeling supplies, such as foam rubber to protect your receiver and battery, and various colours
of paint for the optional pilot and cannon. We've provided a complete list below for both glow and electric versions.
WHAT OTHER ITEMS DO I NEED?
If you would like to electrify your Blue Max V2 ARF, we
recommend using the KMS Quantum 4120/05 brushless
outrunner (or equivalent) with a 13x6E propeller and 80 amp
ESC. We suggest using a 4 cell 2500mAH to 4000mAH LiPO
EDWWHU\)RUOLJKWHUZHLJKWEXWOHVVÀLJKWWLPHXVHDP$+
/L32EDWWHU\7RDGGPRUHÀLJKWWLPHZKLOHVDFUL¿FLQJRQO\D

LATERAL BALANCING
Lateral balancing will make the aircraft's controls easier to trim and will make the aircraft track straighter in the air.
TTurn the aircraft upside down and loop one length of string around the propeller shaft, then loop a second length of string around
the tail wheel wire.
TWith someone helping you, carefully lift the aircraft up by the two lengths of string. Watch how the wing reacts. If one side of the wing
drops, that side is heavier than the other. To correct this condition, stick a small piece of self-adhesive lead weight to the bottom of the
lighter wing half (the one that doesn't drop). For best mechanical advantage, place the weight as close to the wing tip as possible, but

IMPORTANT If the ESC that you're using does not provide power to the receiver (feature BEC circuitry) when using a 4 cell LiPO
battery, you will need to install a separate 4 cell receiver battery pack and an On/Off switch into the fuselage as described in this step.
Most ESCs that require the use of a separate 4 cell receiver battery pack must have the positive (+) wire disconnected from the
receiver throttle lead. Please check your ESC user's guide for further information.

TOOLS AND SUPPLIES REQUIRED
The covering material used on your aircraft is real iron-on, heat-shrink covering material. It is possible with heat and humidity changes
that the covering material on your aircraft may wrinkle or sag. This trait is inherent in all types of heat-shrink material. To remove any
wrinkles that might be visible you will need to use a heat-sealing covering iron.
TPlug in and turn on the sealing iron to the medium-high temperature setting. Allow the sealing iron to heat up for approximately 5 - 7 minutes.
TAfter the sealing iron has reached temperature, lightly apply the sealing iron to the wrinkled section of the covering material. Move
the sealing iron slowly over the wrinkled section until the covering material tightens and the wrinkles disappear.
If the colour layer smears from any of the seams the temperature of the sealing iron is too hot. Turn the temperature dial down and
wait about 5 minutes for the sealing iron to adjust to the lower temperature. You can remove any excess colour streaks using a paper
towel soaked with a small quantity of acetone.
A NOTE ABOUT COVERING MATERIAL
ODuring the covering process, sometimes colour may smear slightly from the seams. If you see any smeared colours on the covering
material, they can be quickly removed by simply wiping them off with a paper towel and a small amount of acetone.

OWhen gluing anything that has a smooth surface, it's important to lightly roughen the gluing surfaces with 220 grit sandpaper. This
will allow the glue to stick better. Also, never glue directly to the covering material. Always remove the covering material from the gluing
surfaces prior to gluing the parts together.
OWhen cutting away the covering material from the gluing surfaces, be careful to cut only through the covering material. Try not to cut
down into the balsa structure because that can compromise the integrity of the airframe.
OWe do not suggest storing your aircraft in an extremely hot environment (like the back of your car in direct sunlight) for any length of
time. The extreme heat could cause the covering material to wrinkle or sag and possibly damage the fragile components of the radio
control system and/or battery.
OEpoxy can be cleaned up before it dries using rubbing alcohol, and C/A can be cleaned up before it dries using C/A Debonder.
OTo prevent current loss, use high-quality connectors between the battery and the ESC, and between the ESC and the motor.
OInsulate solder joints with heat-shrink tubing to prevent short circuits and corrosion.

TCarefully apply a light coat of thin C/A to the edges of both the hatch cover
and the hatch. This will secure the edges of the covering material into place
so that it doesn't peel up in the future.
TGlue the reinforcement plate with a notch cut into it to the front of the hatch
cover, making sure that the front edge of the reinforcement plate is 1/8" (3mm)
behind the front edge of the hatch cover and that the reinforcement plate is
centred between the sides of the hatch cover.
TGlue one reinforcement plate to the back of the hatch cover, making sure
that the back edge of the reinforcement plate is 1/8" (3mm) in front of the back
edge of the hatch cover and that the reinforcement plate is centred between
the sides of the hatch cover.
TCut a 1/8" (3mm) wide by 3/4" (18mm) long slot in the centre of the hatch
cover for the hatch latch. Position the front of the slot 9/16" (14mm) behind the
front edge of the hatch cover.
TGlue the hatch latch to the hatch cover, making sure not to get any glue in
the latch mechanism.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE HATCH COVER

STEP 1: ALIGNING THE WING PANELS
TCut away the excess covering material that overlaps onto the root ribs of
each wing panel, leaving about 1/16" (1.6mm) overlapped so it does not
pull away.
IMPORTANT It's very important to the integrity of the wing centre-section
joint that you remove as much covering material from the root ribs as
possible. Do not omit this procedure or the wing centre-section joint may

TCut out a battery access hatch on the bottom of the fuselage. The hatch
should be 3" (76mm) wide and 3-3/4" (95mm) long. The hatch should be
centred between the fuselage sides and the back edge of the hatch should be
1/2" (13mm) in front of the "step" (A) in each side of the fuselage.
IMPORTANT Use a straight edge ruler and a sharp modeling to ensure
accurate and straight cuts.

TCut out the seat barrel backrest along the moulded scribe lines, making
sure to leave a 1/4" (6mm) wide lip on the bottom to use as a gluing surface.

of the seat barrel backrest are even with the edge of the seat barrel.

TCut away the covering material from over the top and bottom of the two

the centre-section joint.
TCut away the covering material from over the predrilled holes in the
wing-screw doubler.
TPlace the wing-screw doubler onto the top of the wing and align the predrilled
holes in the wing-screw doubler with the predrilled holes in the wing.
TWhile holding the wing-screw doubler in place, draw an outline around it
onto the wing.
IMPORTANT The back edge of the wing-screw doubler may hang past
the trailing edge of the wing. This is normal.
TCut away the covering material from over the two wing strut mounting holes
in the bottom of the fuselage. Each hole is located 3/4" (19mm) behind the
main landing gear bracket and 1/2" (13mm) in from the fuselage sides.
TCut away the covering material from over the four wing strut mounting holes
in the bottom of the wing. Two holes are located in each half of the wing, 20"
(508mm) out from the centreline of the wing. The two forward holes are
located 7" (178mm) in front of the aileron hinge line and the two rear holes
are located 2-3/4" (70mm) in front of the aileron hinge line.
TInstall the wing onto the fuselage.
TMount the two wing struts onto the fuselage, using two M3 x 10mm machine

STEP 2: MOUNTING THE WING
TApply a couple of drops of thin C/A into each of the two threaded wing-screw
mounting holes in the fuselage. Allow the C/A to fully cure before proceeding.
IMPORTANT The C/A will soak into the plywood, strengthening the threads. Do not omit this procedure. Allow the C/A to fully cure
before proceeding.
TPlace the wing into the wing saddle, push it forward completely, then push
the trailing edge down into place.
TAlign the holes in the wing with the threaded holes in the wing mounting
block inside the fuselage.
TSecure the wing into place, using two wing mounting screws.
Don't overtighten the screws. You don't want to crush the wing or break
the screws off.

TSet the stabiliser onto the stabiliser mounting platform, push it forward as far as
possible, then line up the centreline you drew on the stabiliser with the centreline
of the back of the fuselage and hold only the trailing edge of the stabiliser in
position, using a T-Pin.
IMPORTANT The front of the stabiliser should be able to pivot slightly

trailing edge should not be allowed to move from side to side.
TWith the wing mounted to the fuselage, use a ruler to measure the distance

stabiliser until both of these measurements are equal.
When both of these measurements are equal, you're assured that the
stabiliser is square to the wing.

TDrill two 1/16" (1.6mm) pilot holes through the front of the hatch cover and
into the plywood mounting blocks inside the fuselage. Position each pilot hole
3/16" (5mm) in from the sides of the hatch cover and 3/16" (5mm) behind the
front of the hatch cover.

STEP 2: INSTALLING THE COWL MOUNTING BLOCKS
IMPORTANT Five cowl mounting blocks are provided to mount the cowl. Two cowl mounting blocks D-62 are installed on the
bottom of the fuselage sides, two cowl mounting blocks D-61 are installed on the middle of the fuselage sides, and the single cowl
mounting block D-60 is installed centred on the top of the fuselage (the hatch cover).

described above, making sure that the front of each cowl mounting block is
even with the front of the fuselage.
IMPORTANT The narrower edge of the two lower cowl mounting blocks
D-62 should be installed even with the bottom of the fuselage. The wider edge
should be toward the top of the fuselage.
TIf you're using a glow engine, carefully elongate the precut hole in the front
of the cowl for your engine's crankshaft. The top of the elongated hole should
be approximately 1-3/8" (35mm) down from the top of the cowl.
TIf you're using a brushless outrunner electric motor, carefully cut out the
portion of the cowl directly below the precut hole in the front of the cowl.
TLine up the front of the cowl, using your engine's drive washer as a guide.
When aligned properly, the front of the cowl should be approximately 1/4"
(6mm) behind the drive washer and the front of the cowl should be centred
from side-to-side when viewed from the front. The cowl should also be straight
when viewed from the side.

TRemove the stabiliser from the fuselage, then carefully cut away the
covering material from inside the lines you drew.
PRO TIP Use a heat-sealing iron to adhere the covering material down
where you cut it. This will prevent it from loosening up and wrinkling.
TApply a generous amount of 30 minute epoxy to the gluing surfaces on both the stabiliser and the stabiliser mounting sides.
TSet the stabiliser into place and realign it, double-checking all of your measurements once more before the epoxy sets up. Quickly
remove any excess epoxy and use T-Pins to hold the stabiliser in place and aligned until the epoxy has fully cured.
STEP 3: ALIGNING AND INSTALLING THE VERTICAL STABILISER
TRemove the rudder and its hinges from the vertical stabiliser and set them
aside for now.
TPush the vertical stabiliser into the mounting slot in the horizontal stabiliser.
Use a straight edge to ensure that the trailing edge of the vertical stabiliser is
even with the back edge of the fuselage. This will ensure that the rudder will
line up correctly when it's hinged later.
TDraw a line on each side of the vertical stabiliser where it meets the top of
the mounting slot.
TCut away the covering material from below both the lines that you drew on
the stabiliser and from the base of the stabiliser, too.

TGlue the stabiliser into place, using a generous amount of 30 minute epoxy.
IMPORTANT It's important that the trailing edge of the vertical stabiliser
be even with the back edge of the fuselage and that the vertical stabiliser be

is setting up and curing.

STEP 1: HINGING THE AILERONS
IMPORTANT C/A-style hinges are used to hinge the control surfaces. These hinges are designed to be glued into place using thin
C/A. Do not glue the hinges into place using any other type of glue, such as thick C/A or epoxy. Use of any adhesive other than thin

PRO TIP The T-Pins will keep the hinges centred and square to the hinge
line while you are hinging the aileron.
TPush two T-Pins through the centre of four aileron hinges.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE AILERON CONTROL LINKAGE ASSEMBLIES
TThread one adjustable control horn onto each threaded aileron torque
rod. When positioned properly, both adjustable control horns should be even
with the top of the torque rods.
TCut away two arms from a "4-point" servo horn, then enlarge the hole in
each servo arm that is 5/8" (16mm) out from the centre of the servo horn, using
a 5/64" (2mm) diameter drill bit.
TInstall the 90º bend in each pushrod wire into the hole that you enlarged in
the servo arms, using two snap-keepers.
The pushrod wires should be orientated on top of the servo arms.
TUse a couple of pieces of masking tape, taped between the ailerons and
the wing, to hold the ailerons centred.
TWith both the aileron servo and the ailerons centred, thread a clevis onto
each pushrod wire and snap the clevises into the adjustable control horns.
TRemove the masking tape and double-check that both the aileron servo horn and both ailerons are still centred. If necessary, thread
the clevises in or out to centre the ailerons, then move the ailerons up and down several times to ensure proper movement. Both ailerons
should move smoothly and not bind in any way.

that you push each hinge in up to the T-Pins.
IMPORTANT Don't glue the hinges into the aileron yet.

TCut out a 1-3/4" (44mm) square piece of wax paper and slide the wax paper
between the torque rod wire and the trailing edge of the wing.
The wax paper will prevent epoxy from gluing the torque rod wire to the
trailing edge of the wing.
TLightly sand the end of the torque rod wire to roughen the gluing surface.

TMix a small quantity of 5 minute epoxy and apply a thin layer to the end of
the torque rod wire and into the predrilled hole and the precut slot in the leading
edge of the aileron.
TRemove the T-Pins and push the aileron up against the trailing edge. There
should be no more than a 1/32" (1mm) wide hinge gap.
TWhile holding the aileron tight against the trailing edge, pivot the aileron
down 45º and apply 5-6 drops of thin C/A to the exposed area of each hinge,
then turn the wing over and repeat for the other side of the hinges.
TAllow the C/A and epoxy to dry for about 15 minutes, then pivot the aileron up and down several times to free up the hinges.
IMPORTANT Check the integrity of the hinges after the C/A fully cures by gently pulling on the aileron. If one or more hinges
feels loose, apply more C/A to the hinge(s) and allow it to completely cure. The last thing you want is for a hinge to come loose

TRepeat the previous procedures to hinge the aileron to the other half of the wing.
TPush the aileron and hinges into the corresponding four hinge slots in the trailing edge of the wing.
IMPORTANT Roughening the metal will allow the epoxy to stick better to it. Do not omit this procedure.

STEP 2: HINGING THE ELEVATOR
IMPORTANT After allowing the C/A to fully cure, pull on the elevator to check the integrity of the hinges. Apply more C/A to the
hinge(s) if necessary.
THinge the elevator to the horizontal stabiliser, using the same techniques
that you used to hinge the ailerons to the wing. The elevator is hinged using four
hinges. When hinging the elevator, the tips of the elevator should be even with
the tips of the stabiliser and there should not be more than a 1/32" (1mm)
wide hinge gap.
STEP 3: INSTALLING THE TAIL WHEEL ASSEMBLY
TCut away the covering material from over the notch in the leading edge of
the rudder. The notch is located 2-1/4" (57mm) up from the bottom of the rudder.
TCarefully drill a 3/32" (2.4mm) pilot hole into the leading edge of the rudder.
Position the pilot hole 1/2" (13mm) up from the bottom of the rudder and drill
the pilot hole 1/2" (13mm) into the rudder.
TCut a slot in the leading edge of the rudder from the base of the pilot hole

IMPORTANT The slot should be deep enough so that when the tail wheel wire is installed, the front edge of the tail wheel wire

IMPORTANT Remember to roughen the gluing surfaces of the tail wheel
wire to ensure a strong glue joint.
TRemove the masking tape and double-check that both the elevator servo horn and the elevator are still centred. If necessary, thread
the clevis in or out to centre the elevator, then move the elevator up and down several times to ensure proper movement. The elevator
should move smoothly and not bind in any way.
TCut away the covering material from over the rudder pushrod exit hole in
the left side of the fuselage. The pushrod exit hole is located 2" (50mm) in front
of the rudder hinge line and 7/8" (22mm) below the stabiliser.
STEP 4: INSTALLING THE RUDDER PUSHROD ASSEMBLY
TCarefully slide the pushrod wire into the rudder pushrod wire guide tube.
TCentre the rudder servo, then install the servo horn onto the servo, making
sure that the servo horn is centred and points toward the side of the fuselage.
TInstall the servo horn retaining screw to secure the servo horn to the servo.
TCut away all but one arm from a "4-point" servo horn, then enlarge the hole
that is 5/8" (16mm) out from the centre of the servo horn, using a 5/64" (2mm)
diameter drill bit.
TInstall the 90º bend in the pushrod wire into the hole that you enlarged in
the servo arm, using one snap-keeper.
The pushrod wire should be orientated on top of the servo arm.
STEP 5: INSTALLING THE RUDDER CONTROL HORN AND CLEVIS
TInstall the control horn onto the right side of the rudder, using the same
techniques that you used to install the elevator control horn. The centreline
of the control horn should be 1-1/2" (38mm) up from the bottom of the rudder
(measured at the hinge line) and the clevis attachment holes should be lined
up over the hinge line. The base of the control horn should be parallel to the
hinge line, too.
TUse a couple of pieces of masking tape, taped between the rudder and the
stabiliser, to hold the rudder centred.
TWith both the rudder servo and the rudder centred, thread a clevis onto
the pushrod wire and snap the clevis into the third hole out from the base
of the control horn.
TRemove the masking tape and double-check that both the rudder servo horn and the rudder are still centred. If necessary, thread the
clevis in or out to centre the rudder, then move the rudder right and left several times to ensure proper movement. The rudder should
move smoothly and not bind in any way.

TPosition and mark the mounting hole locations for the control horn on the
bottom, left side of the elevator. When aligned properly, the centreline of the
control horn should be 3/4" (19mm) out from the fuselage side (measured at
the hinge line) and the clevis attachment holes should be lined up over the
hinge line. The base of the control horn should be angled slightly toward the
fuselage side so that it will line up with the pushrod wire.
TDrill 5/64" (2mm) diameter pilot holes through the elevator for the control
horn mounting screws, then apply a couple of drops of thin C/A into the pilot
holes and allow the C/A to fully cure.
The C/A will harden the surrounding wood, making the mounting area
stronger.
TInstall the control horn and backplate, using two M2 x 20mm machine
screws, then use wire cutters to cut the top of the screws off flush with
the control horn backplate.
TCarefully slide the pushrod wire into the elevator pushrod wire guide tube
(the guide tube on the left side of the fuselage).
TCentre the elevator servo, then install the servo horn onto the servo,
making sure that the servo horn is centred and points toward the side of the
fuselage.
TInstall the servo horn retaining screw to secure the servo horn to the servo.
TCut away all but one arm from a "4-point" servo horn, then enlarge the hole
that is 5/8" (16mm) out from the centre of the servo horn, using a 5/64" (2mm)
diameter drill bit.
TInstall the 90º bend in one pushrod wire into the hole that you enlarged in

STEP 4: HINGING THE RUDDER

TSecure the tail wheel to the axle, using the wheel collar and one M3 x 5mm
machine screw. After tightening the machine screw, make sure that the tail
wheel spins freely.
TPush the wheel collar on the tail wheel wire up against the tail wheel mounting
bracket, then install and tighten the remaining M3 x 5mm machine screw into
the wheel collar.
STEP 1: INSTALLING THE MAIN LANDING GEAR BRACKET
IMPORTANT The main landing gear bracket is constructed from two different diameters of wire. Install the landing gear bracket
with the larger diameter toward the back of the fuselage. Also note that two different sizes of nylon mounting brackets are provided
to match the different wire diameters.
TSlide the nylon spacer onto the axle, followed by the tail wheel.

TPlace the main landing gear bracket onto the bottom of the fuselage. The
front of the landing gear bracket (the smaller diameter wire) should be positioned

in place, mark the locations of the mounting screws onto the fuselage.
TDrill eight 5/64" (2mm) diameter pilot holes through the fuselage at the
marks you drew, then install the four nylon mounting brackets, using eight
M3 x 12mm wood screws, to hold the main landing gear bracket in place.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE MAIN GEAR WHEELS
TPush one nylon spacer completely onto each axle.
TSlide one main gear wheel onto each axle and secure the wheels into place,
using one wheel collar and one M3 x 5mm machine screw.

spin freely.
TLoop a single # 64 or similar rubber band (not included) several times around
the two hooks on the main landing gear bracket.
The rubber band will act as a shock absorber for the landing gear.
TConnect your radio system and check that the throttle servo output shaft is rotating in the correct direction, then position the throttle
control stick and the throttle trim lever to their lowest positions.
TSlide the adjustable pushrod connector assembly onto the pushrod wire,
then install the servo horn onto the servo, making sure that the servo horn is
angled approximately 30 degrees from centre.
TWhile holding the carburetor fully closed, install and tighten the machine
screw in the top of the adjustable pushrod connector.
TCut away the excess pushrod wire, then install and tighten the servo horn
retaining screw to hold the servo horn securely to the servo.
TOpen and close the throttle several times to ensure that the carburetor opens and closes completely and without binding or hitting
the side of the fuel tank. You may need to adjust your transmitter EPA settings to achieve perfect settings.

XL .52RFS 4-stroke engine. You may need to make slightly different bends
depending on the engine you're using.
TRemove the throttle arm from your engine, install the Z-Bend in the pushrod
wire into the outermost hole in the throttle arm, then slide the pushrod wire

TOpen and close the carburetor several times to ensure that the pushrod

backplate mount and one set is for mounting directly into the back of the motor. If your motor or its backplate mount uses a different
mounting hole pattern, you will need to drill new mounting holes through the motor mounting box to match.

edge of the motor mounting box. If the distance is shorter you will need to install
a shim behind the motor to space it to the correct distance.

IMPORTANT The motor mounting box assembly should be installed with

STEP 3: INSTALLING THE FUEL TANK
TCut two pieces of silicone fuel tubing (not included) to a length of 4" (102mm)
and install them to the aluminium tubes at the front of the fuel tank.
PRO TIP Mark the ends of the silicone tubing "vent" and "pick-up" so you
don't confuse them when it comes time to connect them to the engine
later on.
TCut out a piece of 1/4" (6mm) thick foam rubber and place it on top of the fuel tank mounting platform in the fuselage.

and slide the fuel tank into position, making sure that the stopper assembly
