Introduction
Thank You for choosing a Montigo C-Series Fireplace.
About the C34 Fireplace:
The C34-B includes a 18,000 BTU dual burner with embers and a
ive piece ceramic logset.
The C34-B is certi ied in Canada and the USA
as a ented Gas Fireplace ( ANSI Z21.88 - 2000 / CSA 2.22 - 2000) and
is available in two versions.
nTop Vent (Product Code C34B)
nIntermittent Pilot - Top Vent (Product Code C34B-I)
The C34-BV is rated or Natural Gas at 18,000 BTU/H (7.33 Kilowatts)
Input or Propane at 18,000 BTU/H (7.33 Kilowatts) Input.
How to use this manual:
This manual covers all models and unless otherwise speci ied, the
designation C34-BV re ers to all models. Sections which are speci ic to
a particular model are marked with a symbol,
plus the appropriate model number.
Warranty and Installation Information:
The Montigo warranty will be voided by, and Montigo disclaims any
responsibility or, the ollowing actions:
nModi ication o the ireplace and/or components including Direct-
Vent assembly or glass doors.
nUse o any component part not manu actured or approved by
Montigo in combination with this Montigo ireplace system.
nInstallation other than as instructed in this manual.
Consult your local Gas Inspection Branch on installation requirements
or actory-built gas ireplaces. Installation & repairs should be done by
a quali ied contractor.
Installations in Canada must con orm to the current CAN/CGA B-
149.1 and .2 Gas Installation Code and local regulations.
Installations in the USA must con orm to local codes, or in the absense
o local codes to the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1-1988.

CAUTIONS

should be located out o tra ic & away rom urniture and
draperies.

Installing The Fireplace Shell
The ireplace may be installed in any location that maintains proper
clearances to air conditioning ducts, electrical wiring and plumbing.
Sa ety, as well as e iciency o operation, must be considered when
selecting the ireplace location. Try to select a location that does not
inter ere with room tra ic, has adequate ventilation, and o ers an
accessible pathway or Direct Vent installation. Re er to page 4 - B-
Vent Installation or more in ormation.

Clearances
These clearances apply to all dimensions except the framed opening,
where the clearance to combustibles is 0". The C34-B clearances to
combustible materials are:
Top 10"

Unprotected combustible walls which are perpendicular to the ireplace
opening, must not project beyond the shaded area shown in Figure 6b.
For protection against reezing temperatures, it is recommended that
outer walls o the chase be insulated with a vapour barrier. This will
reduce the possibility o a cold-air convection current on the ireplace.

Installing a Shelf Over the Fireplace
When installing a shel over the top o the ireplace, the minimum
allowable clearance rom the top o the ireplace to a shel is 10".
(Proper clearance must be maintained around the vent pipes as
specified in the clearances section)
WARNING:
When this appliance is installed directly on carpeting, tile or any
combustible material other than wood looring, it must be installed
on a metal or wood panel extending the ull width and depth o the
appliance.

Installing The Gas Line
The gas line must be installed be ore inishing the C34-BV Fireplace.
Natural Gas requires a minimum inlet gas supply pressure o 5.5"
W.C. & a mani old pressure o 3.5" W.C. Propane Gas requires a
minimum inlet gas supply pressure o 11" W.C. & a mani old pressure
o 10" W.C. Provision must also be made or a 1/8" N.P.T. plugged
tapping and be accessible or test gauge connection immediately
upstream o the gas supply controls to the appliance. The ireplace gas
connection and the main operating gas valve is located behind the
removable brass trim at the bottom o the unit and need only be
attached to the gas line with an approved itting, as required by the
applicable installation codes.
Installation
Note: A ter gas line is connected, each appliance connection,
valve and valve train must be checked while under
normal operating pressure with either a liquid solution, or
leak detection device, to locate any source o leak. Tighten
any areas where bubbling appears or leak is detected until
bubbling stops completely or leak is no longer detected.
DO NOT use a flame of any kind to test for leaks.
Installing The Remote Switch
The C34-B 's gas valve, located behind the lower brass trim, may be
connected to a wall switch. The valve generates its own power on a
millivolt circuit. Use only low voltage wire, and DO NOT connect
any external power to it.

Note: The switch location must not exceed 30' rom the ireplace.

The appliance and its individual shuto valve must be disconnected
rom the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing o that
system at test pressures in excess o 1/2 psig (3.5 kPa).
The appliance must be isolated rom the gas supply piping system by
closing its individual manual shuto valve during any pressure testing o
the gas supply piping system at test pressures equal to or less than 1/2
psig (3.5 kPa).
B-Vent Installation
The C34-B is certi ied or use with standard 4" B-Vent and requires
no B-Vent appliance connector. Simply attach the B-Vent to the
ireplace lue collar, and secure it using 1/4" sheet metal screws.
Re er to the current CAN/CGA B-149.1 and .2 or ANSI Z223.1-1988
Gas Installation Code or speci ic vent sizing.
nTest your B-Vent installation a ter completion to ensure that no
combustible by-products are spilling rom the ireplace opening.
This dra t test should be per ormed a ter a three(3) minute warm
up period. The manu acturer will not be responsible or any
installations with inadequate draw.
CAUTION:
Note: I more than 12 eet o B-vent is used on the vent runs, use
ceiling supports.

Finishing Around the Fireplace
Combustible mantels and mouldings may be sa ely installed over the top
and on the ront o the ireplace provided that they do not project
beyond shaded area shown in Figure 6a. Side wall clearances are 3".
Combustible surrounds may be installed with 3" clearance to the side o
the ireplace as shown in Figure 6b.
Fireplace Facing
When selecting the inish material or your ireplace, it is important to
remember the ollowing: TRIMS MUST NOT BE OBSTRUCTED IN
ANY WAY - to do so restricts the air supply for the control
compartments and heat exchanger it also prevents access for
servicing controls.
The ace o the ireplace may be painted to match the room decor,
provided you use a heat-resistant paint. Decorative acing must not
extend past the ireplace opening at all, because it will inter ere with the
access to retainers or removal o glass door.

Mantels & Surrounds
NOTE: National Canadian Gas Association mantel test requirements
are or ire hazard prevention to combustible materials.
New technology, to meet consumer and government demands or the
wise use o energy, has prompted us to manu acture many models o
ireplaces which are hot, uel and energy e icient.
Please be aware; temperatures over the mantel will rise above
normal room temperature and walls above ireplace may be hot to
touch.
We recommend care ul consideration be given to the e ects o
elevated mantel temperatures which may be in excess o product
design, or example: candles, plastic or pictures. This can cause
melting, de ormation, discoloration or premature ailure o T.V. and
radio components.
Painting:
Special care is recommended by the Master Painters and Decorators
Association, when painting the ireplace surrounds, to select and
apply a quality Alkyd sealer prior to the applying o latex paints. This
is to prevent leaching o water rom evaporation and causing a
brownish staining e ect to paint over coats.
