A ceiling-mounted air conditioning unit can
provide cooling without occupying floor space.
For facility managers who contend with ineffective cooling or
ventilation in their server rooms, maintaining proper temperatures in those
spaces can be an ongoing battle. The equipment housed in these types of
spaces is critical to the function of the organization, and a malfunction can
affect individuals and departments throughout the building and beyond. For
many facilities, a cooling system overhaul is not possible without a major
renovation, or it’s simply not within the budget.
As a solution to space challenged server rooms, MovinCool, located in
Long Beach, CA, has introduced the CM12, a ceiling-mounted packaged
air conditioner with a small footprint. Measuring 35" wide by 23" deep by
151⁄2" high (with mounting apparatus), this compact cooling unit weighs only
121 pounds.
The compact and light characteristics of the CM12 enable it to be
installed above a standard drop ceiling. It requires only off-the-shelf hard-
ware for mounting (not included). If the room to be cooled does not have a
drop ceiling, the CM12 features an optional air intake plenum and exhaust
flange to address this installation need.
The unit features separate ducts for supply and return air. The 10" supply
and return air flanges, each with depths of 2.7", facilitate duct installation
and improve air circulation into the space to be cooled. The maximum duct
length of the cold duct hose (evaporator) is 30'; the maximum length for the
hot duct hose (condenser) is 10'.
With cooling capacity of 10,500 Btu/h, the CM12 is suitable for spaces
up to approximately 450 square feet. At 50% RH, the CM12 has an operat-
ing range of 60°F to 95°F on the evaporator and 60°F to 113°F on the con-
denser. Featuring electronic thermostat control, the unit can be managed by
most thermostats on the market; it can also be wired to work with a building
control system.
No special electrical connections are needed to operate the CM12. With
a voltage requirement of 115 volts and a recommended fuse size of 15
amps, the unit can be connected to the existing power supply. Total power
consumption is 1.23kW; current consumption is 11.9 amps; and the mini-
mum/maximum voltage range is 105/125 volts.
The simplicity of the CM12 design and operation lends itself to easy
installation without the need for multiple technicians. John Doran, MovinCool
sales manager, says, “Facility managers can use in-house staff to install the
CM12. However, we recommend they consult with their regular technicians
to ensure the unit works well with their existing systems.”
The evaporator features a centrifugal fan, which has a maximum air flow
(high/low) of 324CFM/228CFM (with two 6' ducts with one 90° bend
each, supply grill, and return grill with filter). The maximum external static
pressure is 0.4 IWG.
The condenser also features a centrifugal fan with a maximum air flow
(high/low) of 700 CFM/370 CFM. The maximum external static pressure is
0.12 IWG.
A variety of features makes it easier for facility managers to keep an eye
on the CM12. For instance, warning signals and audible alarms for conden-
sation overflow and unscheduled shutdown are built in and can be wired to
a central location. A standard internal pump is also included in the unit.
The automatic shut off connections are compatible with most fire alarm
control panels. With these safety and warning features, the unit is able to
shut itself off once notified by the alarm system in the event of a fire or other
emergency.
In addition to fire alarm compatibility, the CM12 can be connected to a
building control system, so facility managers can monitor its operation.
Doran explains, “The CM12 will send out a signal to the system if the unit
shuts down due to cooling failure, thermostat failure, or condensation over-
flow. With this set up, the facility manager is notified [through the building
control system] if the unit is down.”
And with a maximum sound level of 52 decibels above a drop ceiling,
the CM12 will not distract occupants in areas near where the unit is
installed.
“Saving space, time, and expense for spot cooling has become essential
for many businesses with critical equipment operating in confined spaces
with no ventilation or air conditioning,” says Doran. “The CM12 offers an
out of the way ceiling mount solution that will certainly save our customers
time and money, as well as space.”
