ter called MN54G), compliant withIEEE802.11g, isahigh-
efficiencywirelessadapter for wirelessnetworking athome,
inofficeorinpublicplaces.The dataratecanbeupto54
Mbpsandauto-negotiatedto48,36,24, 18, 12, 9,6Mbps
(IEEE 802.11g), or11,5.5,2,1Mbps(IEEE802.11b).
WithMN54G,you can roambetweenconferenceroomand
officewithoutbeingdisconnected theLAN cables;in
addition,sharing files andprinterscanbeeasytasks.
TheMN54GisavailabletoMicrosoft Windowsoperating
systems(Windows XP/2000/ME/98SE)and canbeinte-
gratedintonetworking witheither Ad-hoc mode (computer-
to-computer,withoutanAccess Point) or Infrastructure
mode (computer-to-accesspoint,anAccess Pointis
required).

Ad-hoc Mode: AnAd-hocnetworkisalocalarea networkor
othersmall network,especiallyonewithwireless ortem-
poraryplug-inconnections,inwhichsomeofthenetwork
devices arepart ofthenetworkonlyfortheduration ofa
communicationssession.Usersinthenetworkcanshare
files, printtoashared printer,andaccesstheInternet with
ashared modem. Inthiskind of network,newdevicescan
bequicklyadded;however, userscanonlycommunicate
withother wirelessLANcomputersthatareinthiswireless
LANworkgroup,andarewithinrange.

InfrastructureMode: The difference betweenInfrastruc-
turenetworkand Ad-hocnetworkisthattheformerone
includesan Access Point.InanInfrastructurenetwork,the
AccessPoint canmanage thebandwidthtomaximize band-
widthutilization.Additionally, theAccess Point enables users
onawireless LANtoaccessanexisting wirednetwork,
allowingwirelessuserstotakeadvantage of the wirednet-

Installing theMN54G
1.LocatetheMini-Cardslotonthemainboard.
2.PlacetheMN54Gover theMini-Cardslot(at an
angleof30 degrees).Then, gentlyinsert it into
theslotuntil thegoldenfingerofthecardgets
fullyinserted.
3.Press downthecard,and theretaining clips(on
twosides oftheslot) willlock ontothenotches of
the card.

SoftwareInstallation
Thischapterdescribestheproceduresofinstallingthe
driverandutility.Followtheinstructionstepbystepto
finish theinstallation.Ifyou use Windows 98SE/ME,
pleasepreparethe Windows SetupCDathandbefore
installing the driver;because the systemwillaskyouto
inserttheSetupCD tocopyfiles during the installation.
Please NOTE that the MN54Gshouldbeinstalled intoyour
computerbeforeinstallingthedriverand utility.Then,the
operating systemwill detectanewdeviceandstartto
configurethenewdevice. Click Cancel heretostartinstal-
lation fromtheInstallShieldWizard.
Click
Tip: ThewirelessLAN adapter
shouldbeinstalledintoyour
PCbeforeinstallingthedriver
andutility.
YourWireless LANadaptertype
Insert thesoftwareCDintoyourCD-ROMdrive,and the
Setup programshouldlaunch automatically.
Ifthe Autorunprogramdoesn tlaunchautomatically,click
Start atthetaskbarandselect Run....Type E:\setup.exe
(where EisyourCD-drive)intheOpen boxandclick OK to
launch theSetup programmanually.
ThemainscreenofSetup programwill appearasbelow.
Clickthe InstallSoftware button.

Click Next.
Readand accept theLicenseAgreement; then,click Next.
Inthefollowingwindow, enterthe user sinformation(User
Name,Organization)inthe respectivefields;then,click
Next.
Step 2. Click Install and theprogramwillcopythenecessaryfiles
tothesystem.Theprogress indicatorshowstheinstall-
ingstatus.
If you useWindows98SE/ME,youmaybe askedtoinsert
theWindowsSetup CDduringtheinstallation.Please
insert theSetupCD bytheon-screen instructiontocontinue
theinstallation.
Step 3.
Click Finish when theinstallationiscompleted.The MSI
Wireless LAN icon*will appear inthestatusarea.
