For the NI SwitchBlock and NI PXI/PXIe Switch Modules
This document contains English and Japanese language instructions.
This document explains how to install, configure, and test a National Instruments SwitchBlock or a
National Instruments PXI/PXIe switch module. This document contains information about the NI-DAQ
driver software relative to NI switch products. For more detailed information about NI-DAQ, refer
to Start»All Programs»National Instruments»NI-DAQ»NI-DAQ Readme.

Conventions
The following conventions are used in this guide:
»The »symbol leads you through nested menu items and dialog box options to a final action.
The sequence File»Page Setup»Options directs you to pull down the File menu, select the
Page Setup item, and select Options from the last dialog box.
This icon denotes a note, which alerts you to important information.
This icon denotes a caution, which advises you of precautions to take to avoid injury, data loss,
or a system crash. When this symbol is marked on the product, refer to the Read Me First:
Safety and Electromagnetic Compatibility document that shipped with your device for
precautions to take.
bold Bold text denotes items that you must select or click in the software, such as menu items and
dialog box options. Bold text also denotes parameter names.
bold italic Bold italic text denotes variables that you must select or click in the software, such as menu
items and dialog box options that vary depending on your system.
italic Italic text denotes variables, emphasis, or a cross-reference. Italic text also denotes text that is
a placeholder for a word or value that you must supply.
monospace Text in this font denotes text or characters that you should enter from the keyboard, sections
of code, programming examples, and syntax examples. This font is also used for the proper
names of disk drives, paths, directories, programs, subprograms, subroutines, device names,
functions, operations, variables, filenames, and extensions.
monospace Italic text in this font denotes text that is a placeholder for a word or value that you must
italic supply.
NI SwitchBlock High density expandable switch carrier and interconnectable cards that enable greater
switching capacity per slot than standalone PXI switch modules. The NI SwitchBlock
operates within an NI PXI chassis or, when connected to a PXI peripheral slot or a
PXI Express hybrid peripheral slot, within an NI PXIe chassis.
PCI Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) is a high-performance expansion bus architecture
originally developed by Intel to replace ISA and EISA.
Platform Text in this font denotes a specific platform and indicates that the text following it applies only
to that platform.
PXI PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation (PXI) is a rugged, open system for modular
instrumentation based on CompactPCI, with special mechanical, electrical, and software
features.
PXIe PXI express integrates PCI Express technology into the PXI backplane. This integration
results in significantly increased bandwidth, ensured backward compatibility, and additional
timing and synchronization features.

1. Verifying the System Requirements
Your system must meet certain requirements to use NI switch hardware products with NI-SWITCH. For
more information on minimum system requirements, recommended system requirements, and
supported application development environments (ADEs), refer to the NI-SWITCH Readme, which is
available on the NI-SWITCH media included with your hardware.
Note After you install NI-SWITCH, you can access the NI-SWITCH Readme at Start»
All Programs»National Instruments»NI-SWITCH»Documentation»NI-SWITCH Readme.
2. Unpacking
Each NI switch product ships in an antistatic package to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD can
damage several components on the NI switch product.
Caution Never touch the exposed pins of connectors.
To avoid ESD damage when handling the NI switch product, take the following precautions:
• Ground yourself with a grounding strap or by touching a grounded object.
• Touch the antistatic package to a metal part of your computer chassis before removing the
NI switch product from the package.
Remove the NI switch product from the package and inspect it for loose components or any other signs
of damage. Notify NI if the NI switch product appears damaged in any way. Do not install a damaged
NI switch product in your computer or chassis.
Store the NI switch product in the antistatic package when not installed in a chassis.
3. Verifying the Kit Contents
Verify that the kit contains the following items:

❑Other documents

4. Installing the Software
NI switch carriers and modules are packaged with two drivers—NI-SWITCH and NI-DAQmx. Each
driver has its own API with an extensive library of VIs and functions you can call from your ADE to
program your NI switch hardware product. Install or upgrade NI-SWITCH before installing new
hardware so Windows can detect your device. To install NI-SWITCH, complete the following steps:
1. (Optional) Install an ADE, such as LabVIEW or LabWindows™/CVI™, if you are developing
an application for the NI switch hardware product. You can find versions of NI application
software supported by NI-DAQmx in the NI-DAQ Readme at Start»All Programs»National
Instruments»NI-DAQ»NI-DAQ Readme. You can find versions of NI application software
supported by NI-SWITCH in the NI-SWITCH Readme at Start»All Programs»National
Instruments»NI-SWITCH»Documentation»NI-SWITCH Readme.
Note Always install or upgrade your application software before installing the driver. If you install
application software after installing NI-SWITCH, you must run the NI-SWITCH installer again to
install the correct application software support.
2. Insert the NI-SWITCH media. The NI-SWITCH installer should open automatically. If not, select
Start»Run, and enter
x :\autorun.exe, where x is the letter of the media drive.
3. Follow the instructions in the installation prompts.
(Windows Vista and Windows 7) Users may see access and security messages during installation.
Accept the prompts to complete the installation.
4. When the NI-SWITCH installer completes, a dialog box appears asking if you want to restart, shut
down, or restart later. Click one of the following options:
•Restart if your NI switch hardware product is already installed in the chassis.
•Restart if you are using a system running the LabVIEW Real-Time Module. Download
NI-DAQ to the target using Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX). Refer to the
Measurement & Automation Explorer Help by selecting Help»Help Topics»Remote
Systems in MAX.
•Shut Down if you are ready to install your NI switch hardware product.
•Restart Later to install more NI software or documentation.
5. Installing the Hardware
Caution Power off the chassis before installing an NI switch product. NI switch products are not
hot-swappable. Adding or removing an NI switch product while the chassis is powered on can result

in blown chassis fuses or damage to the chassis and the NI switch product.
Follow proper ESD precautions to ensure you are grounded before installing the hardware. Refer to
the specifications document for your NI switch product for important safety and compliance
information.
To install your NI switch product, follow the instructions in the section that describes your
NI switch product.
Install the NI-SWITCH driver software before installing the hardware to ensure proper installation and
auto-detection of the NI switch product.
Installing an NI SwitchBlock Carrier
Refer to Figure 1 and complete the following steps to install an NI SwitchBlock carrier.
Note You may install the NI SwitchBlock carrier before or after installing NI SwitchBlock cards in
the carrier.

1. Power off and unplug the NI PXI/PXIe chassis.
2. If the NI PXI/PXIe chassis has multiple fan speed settings, ensure that the fans are set to high.
3. Position the NI PXI/PXIe chassis so that inlet and outlet vents are not obstructed. Refer to the
chassis documentation for more information.
4. Remove the protective cover from the PXI connector on the back of the carrier.

5. Identify four adjacent empty slots in the NI PXI/PXIe chassis for the NI SwitchBlock carrier to
occupy.
Note The second-to-leftmost slot occupied by the carrier must be compatible with the carrier’s
platform. The other three occupied slots may be any peripheral or timing slot. Refer to Table 1 to
determine what slots support your carrier if you are using an NI PXIe chassis. Refer to the chassis
documentation for details.
6. Remove the filler panels of the four PXI/PXIe slots you have selected for installing the carrier.
7. Touch any metal part of the chassis to discharge static electricity.
8. Slide the carrier into the empty slots, ensuring that the carrier engages with the card guides in the
chassis, as shown in Figure 1. When you begin to feel resistance, continue to push the carrier into
the slot until the carrier front panel is even with the front panels of adjacent modules or the chassis
controller.
9. Tighten the screws at the top and bottom of the carrier front panel.
10. Cover all empty PXI/PXIe slots using blank PXI/PXIe filler panels.
11. Proceed to the Installing an NI SwitchBlock Card section of this document. If you have already
installed cards in your NI SwitchBlock carrier, proceed to the Configuring and Testing the
NI SwitchBlock section of this document.

Installing an NI SwitchBlock Card
Refer to Figure 3 and complete the following steps to install an NI SwitchBlock card.
Note You may install NI SwitchBlock cards in the NI SwitchBlock carrier before or after installing
the carrier in a chassis.

1. Power off and unplug the NI PXI/PXIe chassis.
2. If the NI PXI/PXIe chassis has multiple fan speed settings, ensure that the fans are set to high.
3. Position the NI PXI/PXIe chassis so that inlet and outlet vents are not obstructed. Refer to the
chassis documentation for more information.
4. Remove the filler panel of an unused slot in the NI SwitchBlock carrier.
5. Touch any metal part of the chassis to discharge static electricity.
6. Slide the card into the empty slot, ensuring that the card engages with the card guides in the carrier,
as shown in Figure 3. When you begin to feel resistance, continue to push the card into the slot until
it clicks into place and the card front panel is even with the front panels of adjacent cards or filler
panels.
7. Tighten the screws at the top and bottom of the card front panel.
8. Cover all empty NI SwitchBlock slots using blank NI SwitchBlock filler panels.

9. Plug in and power on the NI PXI/PXIe chassis.

Installing an NI PXI/PXIe Switch Module
Refer to Figure 4 and complete the following steps to install an NI PXI/PXIe switch module.

1. Power off and unplug the NI PXI/PXIe chassis.
2. If the NI PXI/PXIe chassis has multiple fan speed settings, ensure that the fans are set to high.
3. Position the NI PXI/PXIe chassis so that inlet and outlet vents are not obstructed. Refer to the
chassis documentation for more information.
4. Identify a supported slot in the NI PXI/PXIe chassis. Refer to Table 1 to determine what slots
support your switch module if you are using an NI PXIe chassis. Refer to the chassis
documentation for details.

5. Remove the filler panel of an unused PXI/PXIe slot.
6. Touch any metal part of the chassis to discharge static electricity.
7. Ensure that the ejector handle of the device is in the unlatched (down) position and swings freely.
8. Holding the device by the injector/ejector handle, slide it into the empty slot, ensuring that the card
engages with the card guides in the chassis, as shown in Figure 4.
9. When you begin to feel resistance, pull up on the injector/ejector handle to latch the device.
10. Tighten the screws at the top and bottom of the device front panel.
11. Cover all empty PXI/PXIe slots using blank PXI/PXIe filler panels.
12. Plug in and power on the NI PXI/PXIe chassis.
13. Proceed to the Configuring and Testing an NI PXI/PXIe Switch Module section of this document.
6. Configuring and Testing in MAX
To configure and test your NI switch product, follow the instructions in the section that describes your
hardware platform.
Configuring and Testing the NI SwitchBlock
Configure the NI SwitchBlock under Devices and Interfaces in MAX.
Note Each NI SwitchBlock card is initially configured as a single-card device in software. Use
MAX to group multiple cards to operate as a multicard device in software.
1. If you are using an embedded PXI controller, power on the chassis. If you are using an MXI
controller, power on the chassis before you power on the computer.
2. Launch MAX (Start»All Programs»National Instruments»Measurement & Automation).
3. Expand Devices and Interfaces. If you are using a remote real-time (RT) target, expand Remote
Systems, find and expand the target, and then expand Devices and Interfaces.
4. Check that the NI SwitchBlock carrier appears under the appropriate chassis. MAX assigns the slot
number of the carrier as the second-to-left chassis slot occupied by the carrier. If your chassis does
not appear under Devices and Interfaces, refer to the chassis documentation to identify the
chassis.
Note If the carrier does not appear, press <F5> to refresh the view in MAX. If the carrier still does
not appear, repeat the steps in the 5. Installing the Hardware section. Refer to NI Technical Support
at ni.com/support for troubleshooting information if the carrier is still not recognized. For more
information about using MAX, refer to the available help files within MAX.

5. Right-click the NI SwitchBlock carrier and select Configure to launch the NI SwitchBlock
Configuration Panel.

6. By default, all NI SwitchBlock cards in the carrier appear as single-card devices, as shown in
Figure 6. Use one or more of the following methods to designate which cards compose each device:
• Select Combine All to combine all combinable NI SwitchBlock cards in the carrier into
devices, or select Uncombine All to split all cards into single-card devices.
• Right-click a card and select Move To»New Device to create a new device.
• Drag and drop a card into the desired device to create a multicard device.
• Right-click a card and select Move To»Device Name to create a multicard device, where
Device Name indicates the name of the device into which you would like to move the card.
Refer to the NI SwitchBlock Device Reference in the NI SwitchBlock Configuration Panel Help
for guidelines for creating multicard devices.
7. When you have completed assigning NI SwitchBlock cards to devices, select OK to update the
configuration tree in MAX, or select Cancel to revert to the existing configuration.
Note If a device name has not been previously specified in the MAX configuration tree, MAX will
auto-generate a device name such as SwitchBlock1Dev1, where SwitchBlock1 indicates the name of
the carrier in which the cards that compose the device are installed.
8. To test the configuration, right-click each device in the carrier under Devices and Interfaces, and
select Self-Test. After the self-test, a message indicates successful verification or whether an error
occurred. If an error occurs, refer to ni.com/support for troubleshooting information.
Configuring and Testing an NI PXI/PXIe Switch Module
Configure all NI PXI/PXIe switch modules under Devices and Interfaces in MAX.
Note Each NI switch module is represented as a device in software and has a device name in MAX.
1. If you are using an embedded PXI controller, power on the chassis. If you are using an MXI
controller, power on the chassis before you power on the computer.
2. Launch MAX (Start»All Programs»National Instruments»Measurement & Automation).
3. Expand Devices and Interfaces. If you are using a remote real-time (RT) target, expand Remote
Systems, find and expand the target, and then expand Devices and Interfaces.
4. Check that the NI PXI/PXIe switch module appears under the appropriate chassis. If your chassis
does not appear under Devices and Interfaces, refer to the chassis documentation to identify the
chassis.
Note If the device does not appear under the appropriate chassis, press <F5> to refresh the view in
MAX. If the device still does not appear, repeat the steps in the 5. Installing the Hardware section.
Refer to NI Technical Support at ni.com/support for troubleshooting information if the switch
module does not appear as a device in MAX. For more information about using MAX, refer to the
available help files within MAX.
5. Right-click the device you want to test and select Self-Test. After the self-test, a message indicates
successful verification or if an error occurred. If an error occurs, refer to ni.com/support for
troubleshooting information.

6. Right-click the switch device name and select Properties.

7. The Terminal Block/Topology tab is selected by default. Select the terminal block connected to
the switch module from the Terminal Block/Accessory listbox.
8. Set a default topology from the Topology listbox.
9. Select the Channels tab.
10. If necessary, designate source channels for the topology selected in the Terminal Block/Topology
tab. You can set different source channels for each topology. Refer to the NI Switches Help for more
information about setting source and configuration channels.
11. If necessary, designate reserved channels for routing. You can reserve different channels for routing
in each topology.
12. Click OK to accept the changes.
7. Connecting Signals to Switch Terminal Blocks
Refer to the documentation for your terminal block to install the terminal block and connect signals to
the NI switch product.

8. Programming the NI Switch Product
You can operate the NI switch product in one of the following ways:
• Interactively using the NI-SWITCH Soft Front Panel
• Programmatically using NI-SWITCH or NI-DAQmx
• Interactively using NI Switch Executive. Refer to ni.com/switchexecutive for more
information about NI Switch Executive.
NI-SWITCH Soft Front Panel (SFP)
The NI-SWITCH SFP is an interactive tool you can use to test the basic functionality of the NI switch
product, become familiar with its operation, and troubleshoot your applications. The NI-SWITCH SFP
supports all NI switch products.
You can launch the NI-SWITCH SFP from Start»All Programs»National Instruments»
NI-SWITCH»NI-SWITCH Soft Front Panel.
Refer to the NI Switches Help for more information about the NI-SWITCH SFP.
NI-SWITCH Driver
The NI-SWITCH API includes a set of operations and attributes that exercise all the functionality of the
NI switch product, including configuration, control, and other NI switch product-specific functions. The
NI-SWITCH API is IVI compliant and supports all NI switch products.
Refer to the NI Switches Help for more information about programming with NI-SWITCH. The
NI Switches Help contains measurement tasks, concepts, a detailed VI/function reference for
NI-SWITCH, and information specific to your NI switch product.
NI-DAQmx Driver
You can operate NI switch products with the NI-DAQmx API. NI-DAQmx is particularly useful when
using hardware scanning with multiple NI switch products. The NI-DAQmx API supports all NI switch
products and is not IVI compliant.
Refer to the NI-DAQmx Help for more information about programming with the NI-DAQmx API. Refer
to the NI Switches Help for information specific to your NI switch product.
Examples
Examples demonstrate the functionality of the NI switch product, serving as programming models and
building blocks for your own applications. The NI Example Finder is a utility available for some
software applications that organizes examples into categories and allows you to easily browse and

Appendix A: PXI Express Compatible NI Switch Products
PXI Express compatible switch products can operate in standard PXI slots in an NI PXI/PXIe chassis,
as well as in PXI Express hybrid slots in an NI PXIe chassis, while PXI cards that are not PXI Express
compatible can only operate in standard PXI slots. To determine if your NI switch product is
PXI Express compatible, refer to Figure 8. To install a PXI Express compatible NI switch product,
refer to the Installing an NI PXI/PXIe Switch Module section using a PXI Express compatible slot.
Note Refer to your NI PXI chassis documentation to determine which slots are PXI Express
compatible.

1. システム要件を確認する
NI スイッチハードウェア製品を NI-SWITCH ドライバと一緒に使用するには、特定の要件を
満たすシステムが必要です。
最低システム要件、推奨システム要件、サポートされる開発環
境（ADE）の詳細については、ハードウェアに付属の NI-SWITCH のメディアに含まれる
『NI-SWITCH Readme』を参照してください。
メモ NI-SWITCH をインストール済みのコンピュータでは、スタート→すべてのプログ
ラム→ National Instruments →NI-SWITCH →ドキュメント→ NI-SWITCH Readme
を選択して『NI-SWITCH Readme』にアクセスできます。
2. デバイスをパッケージから取り出す
各NI スイッチ製品は、静電放電（ESD）の防止のために静電気防止用パッケージで包装し
て出荷されます。
ESD は、NI スイッチ製品のコンポーネントの破損の原因となる可能性が
あります。
注意 露出しているコネクタピンには絶対に触れないでください。
NI スイッチ製品の取り扱い中に ESD による破損を防ぐため、以下の予防措置を行います。
•接地ストラップを使用したり、接地された物体に触れて、身体を接地してください。
•静電気防止用パッケージをシャーシの金属部分に接触させてから、NI スイッチ製品を
取り出してください。
NI スイッチ製品を箱から取り出し、ゆるんでいる部品や破損箇所がないか調べます。 NI ス
イッチ製品が破損している場合は、ナショナルインスツルメンツまでご連絡ください。
破損
した NI スイッチ製品をコンピュータやシャーシに接続しないでください。
NI スイッチ製品をシャーシに取り付けていないときは、静電気防止用パッケージに入れて
保管してください。
3. キットの内容を確認する
キットに以下のアイテムが含まれていることを確認します。

4. ソフトウェアをインストールする
NI スイッチキャリアおよびモジュールは、NI-SWITCH および NI-DAQmx の2つのドライ
バと一緒に出荷されます。
各ドライバにはそれぞれ独自の API と共に、呼び出し可能な広範
囲にわたる VI および関数のライブラリが含まれ、ご使用の ADE でNI スイッチハードウェ
ア製品をプログラミングできます。
NI-SWITCH のインストールまたはアップグレードは、
Windows がデバイスを検出できるように、新しいハードウェアデバイスをコンピュータに
取り付ける前に行ってください。
NI-SWITCH をインストールするには、以下の手順に従って
ください。
1. （オプション）NI スイッチハードウェア製品用のアプリケーションを開発する場合は、
必要に応じて LabVIEW または LabWindows™/CVI™などの ADE をインストールしま
す。
NI-DAQmx でサポートされている NI アプリケーションソフトウェアのバージョン
は、『NI-DAQ Readme』（スタート→すべてのプログラム→ National Instruments
→NI-DAQ →NI-DAQ Readme）に記載されています。
NI-SWITCH でサポートされて
いる NI アプリケーションソフトウェアのバージョンは、『NI-SWITCH Readme』
（スタート→すべてのプログラム→ National Instruments →NI-SWITCH →
NI-SWITCH Readme）に記載されています。
メモ ドライバソフトウェアをインストールする前に、必ずアプリケーションソフト
ウェアをインストールまたはアップグレードします。
NI-SWITCH をインストールした後
にアプリケーションソフトウェアをインストールする場合は、NI-SWITCH インストーラ
を再実行し、適切なアプリケーションソフトウェアサポートをインストールする必要が
あります。
2. NI-SWITCH のメディアを挿入します。 NI-SWITCH のインストーラが自動的に起動
します。
起動しない場合は、スタート→ファイル名を指定して実行の順に選択し、
x :¥autorun.exe と入力します。ここで、 x
はメディアドライブの文字になります。
1 キャリアの後部コネクタがシャーシの PXI 周辺コネクタに接続されている場合、NI スイッチブロック用の
NI PXI-2800 をNI PXIe シャーシに取り付けることができます。
