The world of computer science changes rapidly. After releasing this Quick Start Guide,
updates may have been made to software or hardware configurations. Therefore some of
the instructions in this guide may have to be changed slightly and some of the pictures
may vary slightly from what appears.
This Quick Start Guide was designed to cover the basics of the full range of our systems.
Some of the hardware or software mentioned in this manual may not be included with
your system. Therefore you may find certain sections of the guide irrelevant.

Setting Up Your Notebook Computer
Before setting up your notebook computer, we recommend you carefully read the
section ‘Safety and Comfort’ further in this guide. This section details the safety instruc-
tions you need to follow, and provides some tips regarding the ergonomics of your
workplace. Additional information on these subjects is available in the Online Docu-
mentation.
Booting for the First Time
Your notebook is easy to use right out of the box. For a successful installation proce-
dure, we recommend you use the AC power the first time you use your notebook
computer.
Note: unfold the first cover page of your Quick Start Guide for a complete
description of your notebook’s ports and connectors.
Use the pictures on the inside cover page to locate the connectors and buttons and
follow these steps:
CAUTION: when using the AC adapter, make sure the power source falls
within the system’s compatible range of 100-240 volts AC. Never use the AC
adapter if the voltage falls outside of this range (watch for this when travel-
ling to other countries).
①Connect the AC adapter cable into the power port on the notebook.
②Plug the AC adapter cable into the adapter and connect to a grounded wall outlet.
③Locate the latch on the front of the LCD panel. Slide the latch and raise the panel
to open the notebook.
④Press the power button to power on.
Windows XP Setup
When you switch on the computer, the message “Windows XP - Please wait” is dis-
played.
Note: the procedure described below applies to systems featuring either modem and/
or LAN capabilities. Some of these screens may otherwise not appear.
1. Welcome to Microsoft Windows screen.
Click the Next button in the lower right corner.
2. The End User License Agreement screen.
Carefully read the license agreement, and click in the relevant white circle to
accept its terms. Click the Next button.

3. What’s your computer’s name? screen.
If applicable, choose a name for your PC that will help you identify it on your net-
work. Enter the computer name and description and click the Next button.
4. How will this computer connect to the Internet? screen.
Choose your connection by checking either Telephone modem, Digital sub-
scriber line (DSL) or cable modem or Local area network (LAN). Click
the Next button.
➤If you selected Telephone modem, go directly to step 7.
➤If you selected DSL or cable modem, go directly to step 5.
➤If you selected Local area network (LAN), go directly to step 6.
5. Do you use a username and password to connect to the Internet? screen.
Answer the question by checking the relevant option, and click the Next button.
➤If you selected Yes, I use a username and password to connect, the Let’s set
up your Internet account screen is displayed. Enter your username, password, and
ISP’s service name. Click the Next button, and go directly to step 7.
➤If you selected No, this computer is always connected to the Internet, the
Setting up a high speed connection screen is displayed. Go to step 6.
6. Setting up a high speed connection screen.
Enter the required settings to set up your Internet account, and click the Next
button.
7. Ready to register with Microsoft? screen.
Please note that registration is optional. Check your preferred option, and click the
Next button.
➤If you chose to register with Microsoft, enter your personal data in the Collecting
Registration Information screen. Click the Next button.
8. Who will use this computer? screen.
Type the name of each person who will use this computer. These names will
appear on the Welcome screen in alphabetical order. When you start Windows,
simply click your name on the Welcome screen to begin. At least one name must be
entered. When this is done, click the Next button.
9. Thank you! screen.
Click the Finish button to complete the Windows XP installation. The computer
will then work for a few minutes, the screen will become black and the system will
reboot. Do not switch off your computer during this time!

➤If you entered several user names during step 8, the Welcome screen will be dis-
played with on the left side “To begin, click your user name”, and on the right
side the different users with, for each one, a different icon besides.
➤When you click your user name, the other users disappear, and Welcome is dis-
played in front of your user name.
Booting for the Second Time: the NEC Recovery Menu
The following section contains detailed instructions needed to set up your NEC
Recovery Process. We advise you to select your recovery process as soon as you reboot
your system for the first time.
Note: if applicable, you should disable your anti-virus program before using the
NEC Recovery Menu.
You can access the NEC Recovery Menu by clicking the Start button, selecting Pro-
grams/All Programs, then To ols and clicking NEC Recovery Menu.
➤First you should read carefully the Selecting Your Recovery Process chapter (page 6)
and set up your NEC Recovery Process.
➤Later, if you ever need to either restore your system to its initial installation state or
to reinstall software or hardware components, follow the instructions provided in
the relevant chapters in this guide, ‘Using the Recovery Program’ on page 19, and
‘Smart Restore’ on page 23.
Selecting Your Recovery Process
Your computer is supplied with a Backup Partition on the hard disk drive which con-
tains all data you may need in order to restore your configuration as it was when
leaving the factory. This partition occupies about 1.5 to 2 GB of your hard disk drive.
CAUTION: this backup partition is hidden, but can be tempered with using
the Disk Management utility. Do NOT erase the partition with this utility.
The NEC Recovery Menu allows you to choose the way you will restore your system
and to create the necessary tools.
This menu presents four options:
➤Leave your system as it is, with the backup partition on the hard disk drive
(Default).
➤Transfer the contents of the backup partition to a self-made recovery CD (this
option requires a drive featuring CD-R writing capability installed on your sys-
tem), allowing you to restore your system from a CD.

➤Transfer the contents of the backup partition to your network (this option requires
a valid LAN connection on your system), allowing you to restore your system from
the network .
➤Erase the contents of the backup partition completely to free space on your hard
disk drive.
1. Use the Backup Partition (Default)
Leave the backup partition as it is. For the full recovery process, boot on the recovery
media supplied with your system, either a bootable floppy disk or CD-ROM. With
this option, the Backup Partition remains on your hard disk drive, occupying about
1.5 to 2 GB. If this is the recovery process of your choice, you do not need to change
anything in this menu. You may click on Close.
2. Create Master CDs from Backup Partition
Note: this option will appear only if a drive featuring CD-R capability is installed
on your system. If you install later a CD-R drive, you will have to use Smart
Restore (refer to page 23) to install the RecordNow and Master CD Creator
software applications before being able to use this option.
This option will copy the contents of the backup partition to a self-made Master CD
and free up the space on your hard disk drive. The backup partition is automatically
deleted from your hard drive following the transfer. However, as long as the transfer
has not been completed successfully, the backup partition is not erased.
This option will run the Master CD Creator program. It requires a CD-R drive and a
blank recordable CD; DO NOT USE A CD-RW.
Note: during the whole process, do not shutdown the computer nor run any other
programs. Plug your notebook on AC power, and make sure that your anti-virus
software, screen saver and energy saving mode are deactivated.
①Click the Create Master CDs from Backup Partition button to begin the pro-
cedure. The system will reboot, the Master CD Creator program will be launched
and a warning window will appear.
②Please read the information contained in this window carefully and click the OK
button to continue.
③Insert a blank recordable CD and click OK when prompted.
④When the writing process is complete, the program will automatically eject the
CD; click the OK button to continue.

⑤Finally, the program will check the Master CD for errors. When prompted, insert
the Master CD into the CD-R drive (close the CD-R drive tray) and click the
OK button to continue.
⑥This test takes several minutes. When the test is complete and successful, the
message “The Master CD was successfully created” is displayed.
⑦Remove the Master CD from the CD-R drive and click the OK button to con-
tinue.
⑧Label your Master CD. Use a permanent pen to write on the CD’s label side. DO
NOT USE STICKERS ON THE CD FACES.
Note: store your Master CD in a safe place. It now contains the backup data of your
computer. The Master CD is mandatory to use NEC utilities such as Smart Restore
and the Recovery Program (refer to the relevant chapters, ‘Using the Recovery
Program’ on page 19, and ‘Smart Restore’ on page 23).
3. Network Recovery from Backup Partition
This option will copy the contents of the backup partition onto a directory on the
network (this procedure requires a valid LAN connection on your system, and the
connection of an external floppy disk drive).
CAUTION: no DOS drivers are available for the 802.11b Wireless LAN
feature. Consequently, we advise you not to select this recovery option should
your notebook feature only Wireless LAN capabilities.
The backup partition is automatically deleted from your hard drive following the
transfer. However, as long as the transfer has not been completed successfully, the
backup partition is not erased.
Note: this option should only be used by a Network Administrator.
While preparing this recovery process, you will need to update the network boot
floppy relevant to your network. Make sure you have one ready before you start.
Click the Network Recovery from Backup Partition button to begin the proce-
dure. You will first be prompted to define a logical drive on your network, onto which
the backup partition will be copied. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully, and
click OK when you’re done. You will then be prompted to insert a network boot
floppy in the floppy disk drive, click OK when done. Remove the floppy disk when
prompted to do so, and click OK. The files should be copied in approximately 20
minutes. Label this floppy disk “Network Recovery Boot Floppy”.
Note: we advise you to make a backup copy of this boot floppy and keep it in a safe
place because there is no way to re-create it.

During this procedure, the start menu shortcut for Smart Restore will be automati-
cally updated. Do not delete this shortcut because it is the only way to launch Smart
Restore. NEC advises you to note the updated path. To do so, select Start, All Pro-
grams, To o l s and point to NEC Recovery Menu. Right-click this menu option. In
the drop down list, click Properties. Note the path displayed in the Ta r g e t area.
Note: if you need the DOS drivers for the LAN card that was installed at the
factory in your notebook computer, you can find them in the following directory:
C:\APPS\Lan.dos.
4. Erase Backup Partition
This option will simply erase the 1.5 to 2 GB Backup Partition and make this space
available for your data. It will not create any tool to restore your system.
Note: before using this option, we recommend you either create a copy of the backup
partition on a Master CD or on a network drive.
When selecting this option, a new window will be displayed with two buttons:
➤With Network
If you choose this option, the system will assume that a copy of the Backup Parti-
tion already exists on the network and will ask you to select the mapped network
drive where the backup partition has been saved.
This button can be used in the following situation: you have for instance ten iden-
tical systems connected to your network. Use the Network Recovery from Backup
Partition option on one of those systems to copy the backup partition on a mapped
drive on your network. Erase the Backup Partition on the nine other systems using
the With Network button as described in this section. If you need to restore the
whole configuration or only some software or hardware elements of one or several
of the ten systems, launch the Recovery Program or Smart Restore. These pro-
grams will use the Network Backup Partition you created.
➤Without Network
If you choose this option, the program will assume that you intend to use a Master
CD to restore your system. Next time you will use the Recovery Program or
Smart Restore, you will be prompted to insert the Master CD.
Note: this is the option to use if you want to free some space on your hard disk drive
and plan to never use the Recovery Program or Smart Restore.

Power and Status LEDs
➤Power Status LED* (A) - lights when the
Versa is powered on.
- Lights green when powered on AC or
battery power.
- Flashes green when in Standby mode (AC
power or battery power).
- Lights orange when battery power is at 8%
or less (battery power only).
- Flashes orange when battery power is at
8% or less, and the notebook is in
standby mode (battery power only).
- Lights amber when battery power is at 3%
or less (battery power only).
- Flashes amber when battery power is at 3% or less, and the notebook is in
standby mode (battery power only).
➤Battery Status LED* (B) - lights to indicate either the primary or secondary battery
charging status.
- Turns off when using battery power, or to indicate the batteries are fully charged.
- Lights amber to indicate that the primary battery is charging.
- Flashes amber to indicate a charging error on the primary battery.
- Lights green to indicate that the secondary battery is charging.
- Flashes green to indicate a charging error on the secondary battery .
➤Email Notification LED* (C) - flashes green to indicate that new mail has arrived.
Note: this feature is not implemented on your notebook.
*These LEDs are replicated on the back of the LCD panel and can be viewed even
when the LCD is closed.
➤Hard Disk/Optical Disc Drive Activity LED (D) - flashes green when the hard disk
or optical disc drive is active.
➤Floppy Disk Drive Activity LED (E) - flashes green when the floppy disk drive is
active.
➤Caps Lock LED (F) - lights green when caps lock is active.

To Prolong Battery Life
➤Enable power management features. (Refer to the section “Managing System
Power” in the electronic User’s Guide.)
➤Put the system in Standby mode if you must leave for a short time.
➤Turn off the system when you finish using it.
➤Set LCD brightness to the lowest comfortable setting.
➤Remove PC cards and disconnect any USB devices when not in use.
What to do on Low Battery
➤Power off the system, remove the battery pack and replace it with a fully charged
battery.
➤Leave the battery pack in the system and connect your notebook to the AC adapter
and a wall outlet.
➣When the system is off, or in Standby mode and the AC adapter is connected,
charge time is approximately 2h30.
➣When the system is powered on and the AC adapter is connected, charge time is
minimum 2h30.

The Onli ne Documentation
A complete User’s Guide can be found on the Online Documentation CD delivered
with your notebook.
Note: depending on your configuration, your notebook may be shipped with
additional CDs. Refer to the ‘Using the Operating System and Utilities’ section of
the Online Documentation for more information on these CDs.
Put the Online Documentation CD into its drive. An application should start auto-
matically and you will see an introduction screen. On clicking Next you will be faced
with the choice of viewing or installing your Guide.
➤If you would like to view the Guide without installing it, select View your documen-
tation, and click Next. The Electronic Guide will run automatically.
➤To install the guide, select Install your documentation and click Next. You will be
asked to choose an installation folder and a Program group. We suggest you keep
the default settings and click Next. The Guide will be installed. When prompted,
click on Finish to end the installation process, and the Guide will run automati-
cally. A shortcut can now be found at Start, Programs, Online Documenta-
tion. If necessary, you can uninstall the Guide by simply inserting the Online
Documentation CD and clicking on OK when the message appears. You can also
uninstall the Guide by selecting Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel,
clicking on Online Documentation, and then the Add/Remove button.
There are several ways to move through this electronic guide:
Using the Internet Explorer Toolbar
When reading the guide, a menu bar appears across the top of the window, providing
easy access to the following commands.
Hide/Show
Click Hide to hide the left-tab components (table of contents, index or search results
list) in the window. Click Show to display the left-tab components (table of contents,
index or search results list) in the window.
Back
Click Back to display the previously displayed page.
Forward
Click Forward to display the next page in a previously displayed sequence of pages.

➤To print a topic, click the page you want to print and then click Print in the menu
bar. The print dialogue box appears, allowing you to define your print options.
➤To print a pop-up page, right-click inside the pop-up window, and then click
Print Topic.
Using Hyperlinks
The user’s guide contains hyperlinks, which allow you to quickly locate information
related to the topic you are viewing. Hyperlinked information usually appears in the
form of text, distinguished by solid underlined coloured text. When you position your
cursor over a text or graphics hyperlink, your cursor will change into a hand symbol
with a pointed finger. You can select the hyperlink by either clicking or double-click-
ing on it with the mouse.
Finding a Topic
➤To see a list of index entries, click the Index tab in left window, and then either
type a word or scroll through the list.
➤To search for words or phrases that may be contained in a topic, click the Search
tab. Type the word or phrase, then click on List topics. Choose the topic in the
list and click on Display.

Trouble Shooting Guide
This section provides a guide to identify a problem and locate its source.
Maintenance and Care
➤Do not stack heavy objects on the computer, AC adapter or battery packs.
➤Avoid moving the notebook during system operation, especially while the hard
disk, diskette drive or any other device is being accessed.
➤Turn computer power off before attaching or removing non-plug-and-play
devices.
➤When cleaning the system, use a soft, clean, dry cloth.
➤If the AC adapter becomes extremely hot, unplug the adapter and let it cool.
➤Keep the AC adapter away from the IR port.
Problem Checklist
First check the following:
➤Power is on to the computer.
➤The electrical outlet to which your AC adapter is connected is working. Test the
outlet by plugging in a lamp or other electrical device.
➤All cables are tightly connected.
➤The display setting is configured correctly.
➤The display brightness control is adjusted properly.
➤If using battery power, check that the battery pack is properly inserted and fully
charged.
Trouble Shooting

The system does not power on.
☞If you are operating the system with battery power, check that the battery pack is
correctly inserted. Attach the AC adapter to recharge the battery.
If you have the AC adapter attached, check that the electrical outlet you are using
works.
✔
An optional component does not work.
☞Make sure the component is securely installed or connected.Verify that the system
parameter for the I/O port configuration is set correctly in Setup.

✔
LCD screen is dark and blank.
☞Power saving mode has shut off the backlight. Press a keyboard key.
The built-in LCD may not be selected. Press Fn-F3 once or twice to select the
LCD video mode.
Screen brightness or contrast needs adjustment. Use the Fn-F8 or Fn-F9 arrow
keys.
The system entered either Standby or Hibernation mode due to low battery
power. Plug in the AC adapter or replace the battery pack, and then press or slide
the power button to resume operation.
✔
Battery power does not last long.
☞Use power-saving modes.
Fully discharge and charge the battery one time to recondition it.
Replace the battery.
✔
Information on the LCD is difficult to see.
☞Adjust the brightness control. Use the Fn-F8 or Fn-F9 arrow keys.
✔
The power button does not resume the system.
☞If the system does not resume, it may have automatically entered either Standby or
Hibernation mode due to low battery power. Attach the AC adapter and try again.
✔
The system does not automatically enter Standby mode.
☞A disk drive might be busy. Wait until the disk drive stops and try again.
Problems at System Startup
The system displays an invalid configuration error message at power on when there are
the following conditions:
➤The current configuration information doesn’t match configuration information
stored in Auto Setup, such as when an internal option is added.
➤The system loses configuration information.
If either condition is true, the system displays an “invalid configuration information”
message.
To continue start-up procedures, press F2 (or F1 when prompted) and run the Setup
utility to set current system parameters.
If an error message appears before the operating system starts, note the message and
look up the error message in the section “Start Up Problems” in the electronic User’s
Guide.

If the system frequently loses the setup configuration data, the internal CMOS battery
may need to be replaced at an authorised repair centre.
You Cannot Solve the Problem
Contact your Authorised Service Representative if the suggested actions don’t solve
the problem. If the warranty of your system offers you this possibility, you may want to
call the support line. Refer to the UltraCare Warranty Terms and Conditions Guide
for more information about your system’s warranty.
Before doing so:
➤Please be in front of your notebook when you call. The Technician you speak with
will want to verify the situation and possibly walk through some additional trouble
shooting to determine exactly what has happened. Have your telephone next to
the computer, so that you can work with the computer as you are talking to the
technician. This will make it much easier to determine the root of the problem.
➤If you have already done some trouble shooting, write down what you have done
and give this information to the Technician. In addition, if you are getting any
error messages, write them down, word for word. The exact wording of an error
message can give the Technician vital information on the nature of the problem.
➤Be prepared to work with the Technicians. They are trained professionals, ready to
assist you. They are well versed in guiding both new and experienced computer
users through the necessary trouble shooting.

Using the Recovery Program
The Recovery Program offers you the possibility of going back to the beginning with
your system. Reinstall the valuable software with the original hardware settings, as if
your system had just left the factory.
CAUTION: using the Recovery Program would only be necessary in the
unlikely event of file deletion or file corruption. Before using the Recovery
Program we recommend that you use Smart Restore (refer to page 23) to rein-
stall the faulty software or hardware without deleting any files.
The Recovery Program is a very powerful tool. Some options permanently
delete all the data on your hard disk drive. Please read the following section
carefully before using the Recovery Program!
Before You Start the Recovery Program
1. Backup your personal files.
2. Return your system to its original configuration:
➤Please read the chapter “Selecting Your Recovery Process” (page 6).
➤Remove any additional hardware components that you may have added to your
notebook.
➤Re-install the original hardware components if you have removed them.
➤Disconnect any additional devices that may be connected to your notebook (e.g.
scanner, printer...).
Starting the Recovery Program
Note: depending on the solution you have chosen, and/or if you have made
modifications to the Boot menu in the BIOS Setup Utility, you may have to alter
the devices’ boot order to suit your needs.
To start the Recovery Program, please do the following:
If you are restoring from the backup partition present on your hard drive:
1. Insert the bootable Recovery CD or floppy disk shipped with your machine in its
drive.
2. Turn the system OFF.
3. Turn the system back ON.

If you are restoring from the Master CD you created:
1. Insert the Master CD 1 into its drive.
2. Turn the system OFF.
3. Turn the system back ON.
If you are restoring from the network:
1. Turn the system OFF.
2. Insert the network recovery boot floppy you created.
3. Turn the system back ON.
After a while, a warning message appears. Please read it carefully. Press O(Ok) to con-
tinue or N (CaNcel) to exit the Recovery Program.
Using the Recovery Program
In the Recovery Program main menu, you have the choice between the following
options:
1. Standard System Restore
This option allows you to reset your system to its original factory settings.
2. Advanced Options
Go to the advanced options if you want to install Windows.
3. Tools
The Tools menu includes an access to the MS-DOS edit mode and a hard disk utility.
4. Cancel to return to DOS.
Closes the Recovery Program and exits to DOS mode.
Standard System Restore
The Standard System Restore option of the Recovery Program resets your system to
the original factory settings. All the files that were on the drive when you purchased
your system will be restored. All the files you have added or created yourself and all
changes made to the original files will be lost after the recovery process! Your hard disk
will be exactly the same as when it left the factory. (Note that if you are restoring from
a Master CD or a network, the complete system will be restored, except the backup
partition.)
CAUTION: before you begin the restoration process, do not forget to backup
your valuable files (documents, pictures ...) on removable disks, such as dis-
kettes or writable CDs.
