Power switch
Open a connection to the serial console port using a terminal program such as PuTTY, and log in using the
default login (admin) and default password (password). You can now complete the AltaVault deployment as described
in the NetApp AltaVault Cloud Integrated Storage Administration Guide.
You must power on all the disk shelves before powering on the controller. Powering on
the controller before the disk shelf prevents AltaVault OS from operating normally.

MUST be installed in
each disk shelf.
- Ensure the power

supplyis in the OFF
position (O).
- Cable both power

DO NOT power on the controller at this point.
Note that dierent clients may have dierent connection settings.
For example, on a PuTTY connection, set the keyboard to VT100+,
flow control to OFF, and baud rate to 9600.
• Connect the management port (wrench icon) on
your controller to the Ethernet switch in your man-
agement network, using a network cable.
See your network administrator for help connecting
to your switches.
• Connect 10GigE ports or GigE ports
for data connection.
The serial console is needed to configure a management IP address
for the AltaVault appliance, using a client. Once this is done, further
configuration can be done using a Web browser and connecting to
the management IP address.
Connect controller to shelf
For optimal system performance, use one of the supported cable configurations displayed below.
• Configure up to three shelves with the AVA400 model
• Configure up to four shelves with the AVA800 model
Altavault systems support controller to shelf cables (with mini SAS/QSFP connectors) and shelf to shelf cables (QSFP/QSFP connectors).

Install disk shelves |3
NOTE: Controller and disk shelves are shipped in separate boxes.
• Install the mounting rails (provided in rail kit) following the instructions in the rail kit.
- Use chassis handles while lifting.
• Mount the chassis in the rack.
• Secure chassis to rack using appropriate screws (not provided).
Alternatively, you can mid-mount the chassis using the mid-mount brackets provided in the rail kit.
For detailed rack installation instructions, see SAS Disk Shelves Installation and Service Guide for DS4243, DS2246, DS4486, and DS4246 on the NetApp Support site.
Install shelf in rack or cabinet
Refer to the the SAS Disk Shelves Installation and Service Guide for DS4243, DS2246, DS4486, and DS4246.

Install controller in rack or cabinet
DO NOT remove HDDs from the disk shelf during installation.
Excessive handling of the drives can lead to internal damage.
NOTE: You can install the shelf below the controller.
The distance between the shelf and controller is dependent on the length
of the SAS cables you plan to use.
• Install the mounting rails (provided in rail kit) following
the instructions in rail kit. Be cautious while lifting.
• Mount the disk shelf in the rack.
• Secure the shelf to the rack using the appropriate screws (not provided).
Install disk shelves in the order set at the factory.
Each shelf is labeled with the associated controller serial number, loop or
stack number of the shelf, and shelf serial number. The loop or stack number
helps to identify the order of installation for each PCI slot on the controller.
The root volume is labeled with loop or stack number 00, and is always the
first shelf attached to the controller. The table shows the relationship of the
controller and shelves for installation:
It is recommended to verify the shelf IDs prior fully cabling the system.
To verify the IDs, attach a power cable to each shelf, power on the shelf,
note the ID on the front panel, and power o each shelf.
Note: Additional shelves ordered from the factory have the shelf ID set to 00 but
are not installed with the root volume. You must install additional shelves in the
order listed in the table, and reset the shelf ID as described in Section 5.
