Memory Card
You can use a compatible microSD memory card as extra
storage space to save memory on your device. You can also
back up information from your device to the memory card.
Important: Use only compatible microSD cards approved by Nokia for use
with this device. Nokia uses approved industry standards for memory cards,
but some brands may not be fully compatible with this device. Incompatible
cards may damage the cards and the device and corrupt data stored on the
card. Keep all memory cards out of the reach of small children.
Insert the memory card
1Place your finger in the lower
corner of the door, and swing the
door to the side.
2Insert the memory card in the
slot. Ensure that the contact area
on the card is facing down.
3Push the card in. You hear a click
when the card locks into place.
4Close the door.
Eject the memory card
1Place your finger in the lower corner of
the door, and swing the door to the side.
2Press the memory card to release it from
the slot.
3Remove the memory card.
Important: Do not remove the memory card in the middle of an operation
when the card is being accessed. Removing the card in the middle of an
operation may damage the memory card as well as the device, and data
stored on the card may be corrupted.

A (U)SIM card is an enhanced version of the SIM card and
is supported by UMTS mobile phones.
Important: Keep all SIM cards out of the reach of small children. Always
switch the device off and disconnect the charger before removing the battery.
For availability and information on using SIM card services, contact your SIM
card vendor. This may be the service provider or other vendor.
Insert the SIM or (U)SIM card
and battery
1With the back of the device facing
you, press the release button (1),
and lift the cover up (2).
2Pull the SIM card holder out of
the card holder slot (3).
3Insert the SIM card into the card holder.
Make sure that the bevelled corner on
the card is facing the bevelled corner
on the holder, and that the gold
coloured contact area on the card is
facing down. Slide the holder back to
the slot (4).
4Insert the battery (5).
5Replace the cover so that the top of
the cover fits the back of the device
(6). Depress the cover bottom to lock
the cover into place (7).

code or lock code, enter it,
and press the left selection
key. The factory setting for
the lock code is 12345.
Your device has internal
antennas.
Switch the device on
Note: As with any radio transmitting device, avoid touching an antenna
unnecessarily when the antenna is in use. For example, avoid touching the
cellular antenna during a phone call. Contact with a transmitting or receiving
antenna affects the quality of the radio communication, may cause the
device to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed, and may
reduce the battery life.

When the keys are locked, is displayed.
To lock or unlock the keys, slide the lock switch.
To select whether the keypad is locked when closing the
slide, press , and select Tools > Settings > General
> Slide handling > Keyguard activation > On when
closing slide, Off when closing slide, or Always ask.
To have the keypad lock activated automatically after a
time-out or when the slide is closed, press , and select
Tools > Settings > General > Security > Phone and
SIM card > Keypad autolock period.
When the keypad lock is on, calls may be possible to the
official emergency number programmed into your device.

2Connect the power cord to the
device. If the battery is
completely discharged, it may
take a while before the charging
indicator starts scrolling.
3When the battery is fully
charged, the charging indicator
stops scrolling. Disconnect the
charger from the device, then
from the wall outlet.

Basic set up
When you switch on your device for the first time, Welcome
is displayed. Select from the following to set up your device:
Settings wizard—to configure various settings, such
as e-mail.
Switch—to transfer content (e.g. contacts and calendar
entries) via Bluetooth, from a compatible Nokia device.
• Select Continue to search for devices with Bluetooth
connectivity.
• For some models, the Switch application is sent to the
other device as a message. To install Switch, open the
message and follow the instructions.
• Select the device you wish to transfer content from, and
enter the code to pair your Nokia N81 and the device.
• Select the content you wish to transfer.
For subsequent data transfer, press > Tools > Utilities >
Switch
Select the following to start a new transfer:
To synchronise content between your Nokia N81 and
another device
To retrieve data from another device to your Nokia N81
To send data from your Nokia N81 to another device

The Nokia Nseries PC Suite is found in the DVD-ROM included
in the Nokia N81 sales package. It allows you to synchronise
and transfer data between your device and a compatible
PC via a compatible data cable or wireless connection. It
also offers applications for creating, editing, managing and
viewing files stored in your device on your PC.

Music
Music player supports file formats such as AAC, AAC+, eAAC+,
MP3, WAV, and WMA. Music player does not necessarily
support all features of a file format or all the variations of
file formats.
To activate music, press > Music >Music Player >select
Music.
• Press to play a selected file
• Press to stop
• Press or to go to next or previous track
• Press and hold or to fast-forward or rewind
Tip: To optimise audio performance, attach the supplied earpads to the headset
Transfer music
Transfer music from a compatible PC or other compatible
devices using a compatible USB cable or Bluetooth
technology.
There are three ways to transfer music:
• Direct data transfer via Bluetooth or a compatible micro
USB cable. If using a USB cable, select Data Transfer as
connection mode.
• Synchronise via Windows Media®11 (WMP 11):
Connect the compatible micro USB cable and select Media
Player mode.
• Synchronise via Nokia Music Manager within the
Nokia Nseries PC Suite: Connect a compatible micro USB
cable using PC Suite mode.

Synchronise with Windows
Media®Player 11 (WMP 11)
Tip: With WMP 11, you can find and purchase digital content on the Internet
through online stores, and synchronise digital media content with your devices.
The functionality of the music synchronisation may vary
between different versions of the WMP application. You can
get more information about WMP compatibility from the
Nokia N81 section of the Nokia website.
Connect the device to a compatible PC. If you use the USB
connection, select the Media player connection as the
connection type in the device.
After connecting your device with a compatible PC, WMP
selects manual synchronisation if there is not enough free
memory in your device. With manual synchronisation, you
can select the songs and playlists that you want to move,
copy, or remove.
Do the following:
• After your device is connected with WMP 11, select your
device in the navigation pane if more than one device is
connected.
• Drag the songs or albums to the list pane for
synchronisation. To remove songs or albums, select an
item in the list, and select Remove from list.
• Check that the list pane contains the files you want to
synchronise and that there is enough free memory on the
device. Select Start Sync to start the synchronisation.

Insert Album Art
When you rip music from your own music CD while you’re
connected to the Internet, WMP 11 will attempt to download
the CD cover art or album art for you.
In some cases, the album art might not be available, or the
wrong album art might be downloaded. You can add your
own album art manually using the Advanced Tag Editor in
the Player:
• Select Library in Windows Media Player.
• In the details pane, right-click the item(s) you want to edit
and select Advanced Tag Editor.
• Select Pictures Tab > Add > Select the picture you
would like to display as album art > select Open to add
the picture as album art.
Upon getting the desired album art, either automatically
through Windows Media Player or manually through
Advanced Tag Editor, transfer the music to your Nokia N81
using WMP 11 or Nokia Music Manager. The album art will
be saved in the image gallery.
• Go to Music Player > select Music > select All songs/
Artists > Options > Album Art > Options > Change
and select desired album art.

Nokia Podcasting
With the Nokia Podcasting application, you can search, discover, subscribe, and download podcasts
over the air; and play, manage, and share audio and video podcasts with your device.
To open Podcasting:
• Press > Select Music > Podcasting.
• Search for podcasts either through keyword search or search from the directories function.
• After finding your desired podcast > Subscribe > Download the podcast.
• Fully downloaded podcasts can be found in the Podcasts folder, with two ways to access:
- Under the Podcasting application: select Podcasts > Options > Play.
- Press > Music > Music player > Podcasts.

3To start a station search, select or, or press and hold the media keys or .
You can also go online to the Station Directory to programme all available FM radio stations
in your city.
To view available visual content for a tuned station, select or Options > Start visual
service (network service).
Note: If you do not have access to the Visual Radio service, the operators and radio stations in your area may not support Visual
Radio.
