IMPORTANT NOTICE
Arris Interactive received CableLabs DOCSIS Qualification for the CMTS 1000 in
July 1999. The CMTS 1000 that was Qualified was tested using Software Release 2.0.
Since that time, Arris Interactive has released Software Release 2.1. Arris will
continue to ship CMTS 1000's with S/W 2.0 installed (the Qualified configuration)
and will include 2.1 on a CD with the shipment.
Arris encourages the use of Software Release 2.1. This release provides the following
features and addresses some existing issues in the 2.0 code.
Performance
Arris has tuned the performance of the CMTS 1000. Users will benefit from a 40%
performance improvement with using Software Release 2.1.
Added Features
- The CMTS 1000 with S/W 2.1 will support 1024 bit modular RSA keys.
- More detail is provided in the event log for CM registration request rejections.
- The CMTS 1000 will now accept configuration files of up to 8K in size.
Issues Addressed
- The CMTS 1000 has been made more robust in the face of:
- corrupted extended headers from rogue cable modems.
- cable modems attempting to register without a modem IP address TLV.
- Several minor issues in the Ingress Avoidance implementation have been
repaired.
- The CMTS, when running 100MB Full Duplex, was not incrementing the
Ethernet Collision and Carrier Sense Error counters correctly; S/W 2.1 corrects
this deficiency.
- The CLI command ping-llc would crash the CMTS due to an alignment error;
this has been repaired.
Arris encourages the use of Software Release 2.1 so that customers can benefit from
the improved performance, robustness, and feature set of the CMTS 1000.

CMTS 1000 V2.1
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Nortel NetworksCable Modem Termination System (CMTS) 1000 is a
scalable cable access solution that allows cable operators to provide their
customers with reliable access to high-speed communications links over a
cable TV network. Additionally, the CMTS 1000 complies with the Data
Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS), which defines a
standard for cable modems and the cable modem termination systems.
This document includes additional information that was not available at the
time of printing of the CMTS 1000 Installation Manual.
RESTRICTIONS
The equipment has an international auto-ranging internal power supply
which allows it to be powered from any 100–120, 220–240 VAC (50-60
Hz) source.
The CMTS supports up to10 Logical Link Control (LLC) protocol filter
entries, and 30 IP protocol filter entries.

UPGRADE RECOMMENDATIONS
• Read software upgrade “readme” file for the latest released software
upgrade information.
• Use a standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
management station such as CastleRock SNMPc™.
• Have the network manager and TFTP file server residing on the same
PC.
• Ensure the person that is performing the software upgrade is proficient
in the operation and configuration of DOCSIS Cable Modems and
Cable Modem Termination Systems.
Traffic should be minimal on the network during the upgrade process
(including any automatic network management polling such as SNMPc™
Trend Watch and Auto Discover). After the upgrade has started, the
process takes approximately one minute per cable modem or cable modem
termination system. Network users should be notified that they will
experience interruptions during the upgrade process.
Upgrading the CMTS forces a reset that will cause the network to go down
for a few minutes.
Upgrade Procedure Summary
There are six basic steps to perform an upgrade to a CMTS 1000 using a
standard SNMP manager.
1. Verify contents of upgrade package.
2. Configure TFTP file server.
3. Ensure the CMTS 1000 can communicate with the TFTP server.
4. Initiate upgrade process.
5. Upgrade and compile the latest SNMP MIBs that are part of this
release.

Release Notes for the CMTS 1000
1-4 305472-B Rev 02
6. Verify upgrade completed successfully and that the active modems
successfully register with the CMTS. You can verify this by checking
the objectID MIB (lancityMcnsProdIdCMTS.2.2.1.0).
Note: If unit fails to respond after upgrade procedure, remove the unit from
the cable system before performing any troubleshooting procedures,
especially resetting the unit to factory defaults.
Step #1: Verify Contents of Upgrade Package
The distribution method for the CM 100 and CMTS 1000 upgrade is via a
Nortel Network-maintained FTP server and web site. Upgrade software
directories will include separate software files for the CM 100 and the
CMTS 1000. All pertinent SNMP MIB files are also included.
Step #2: Configure TFTP File Server
Perform the following procedure to setup the TFTP file server and install
the upgrade software.
Set the TFTP server’s default or public directory to the directory where you
will be copying the upgrade software.
Copy the CM 100 and CMTS 1000 upgrade software files to the TFTP
server’s default directory. We recommend using the data directory that you
use to save and provision the cable modem’s configuration and MD5 files.
Step #3: Ensure Devices Can Communicate with the TFTP Server
Use the Command Line Interface “ping-up” to verify that the CMTS can
communicate with the TFTP server.

Release Notes
305472-B Rev 02 1-5
Step #4: Initiate Upgrade Process
Software Upgrade via SNMP
Use the following procedure to upgrade a CMTS 1000 using an SNMP
manager.
1. Select CMTS 1000 to be upgraded.
2. Select the DocsDev MIB Object ID.
3. Select the Docs_Software MIB Object ID. The SNMP manager
displays the softwareInfo Table.
4. Set the Server IP Address to the IP Address of the TFTP server.
5. Set the Filename to the filename of the upgrade software that you
copied into the TFTP server’s default directory. Enter only the
filename. Do not enter the full path to the TFTP server’s public
directory.
Caution: All parameters must be set exactly as stated. Verify that all
previous steps are complete and accurate, especially file names and IP
Addresses. Verify that the TFTP server is ON and the loadable files are in
the TFTP server’s public directory.
6. Initiate the upgrade process by setting the AdminStatus MIB to
upgradeFromMgt.
You can monitor the process if your TFTP server has a display window, or
returns status information to you. The process takes about one minute.

NEW FEATURES
Software Upgrade Integrity Check
The cycle Redundancy check is being verified during software upgrade in
addition to being checked on system start-up.
Baseline Privacy
RSA
Previous revisions of the CMTS support a 768 bit modulus RSA key. The
CMTS now supports 768 and 1024 bit modulus RSA keys. The CMs have
the option of sending either size key to the CMTS. The CMTS uses this
public key for encryption purposes (secrets) and the1024 bit modulus key
provides more security.
Log Messages
• If a cable modem’s Registration Request is rejected, it now logs the
reason.
• Added log message and console message if DHCP Relay is enabled
when the CMTS has no IP address.
