Description
The NM-11ETH is an Input / Output interface featuring one optically isolated input, one RS-422 signal level
output port and one Serial over Ethernet I/O interface. The NM-11ETH is intended for use with computer based
systems such as ECDIS, SVDR/VDR and conning/monitoring systems where NMEA-0183 data must be acquired from
a source such us the GPS, Gyro, LOG, AIS, Radar ARPA, Echo Sounder or BWNAS. The connection to the computers
is achieved via the Serial over Ethernet Interface with the use of a single CAT5 cable, either by creating a virtual
serial port or directly a user selectable UDP socket for applications that support this feature.
Alternatively it can be used in installations to interconnect additional sources and existing interfaces like
multipliers (e.g. NM-251A series), multiplexers, data converters (e.g. NM-251B speed log interface) and data filters
to computer based systems without the need to install additional high cost Multiport cards or commercial-non
isolated USB to Serial converters.

Operation
The NM-11ETH can acquire serial NMEA-0183 signals provided that these follow the 4.800-38.400/8/N/1
standard. The signal is received at the target computer application via the Serial over Ethernet interface, either by
creating a virtual serial port (VSP), or directly from the assigned UDP socket. An output from the computer software
(e.g. signal to the autopilot from the ECDIS) can be delivered via the same Serial over Ethernet Interface to the
output port carried in RS-422 signal level format.
Input Port
The NM-11ETH has one input port that can be connected to any NMEA-0183 output capable equipment such us
GPS, Gyro, LOG, AIS etc. provided that it follows the 4.800-38.400/8/N/1 standard. The input port is optically
isolated as required from the NMEA-0183 protocol, thus data (-) pole should never been connected to the NM-11ETH
GND terminal. If the instrument’s talker port is single ended, connect that terminal to the RX (+) input and tide the
RX (-) to instrument’s ground. If an RS-232 signal level is connected the ground pole (GND) should be connected
to RX (+) and the data pole (TXD) to RX (-) respectively. The input port can acquire NMEA-0183 sentences carried
in TTL, RS-232 and RS-485/422 signal levels.
The Serial over Ethernet interface is used for connecting to the target computer system. An Ethernet Switch
(not supplied) is required when connecting one or more NM-11ETH interfaces to the computer system. Power over
Ethernet functionality is not yet implemented in the NM-11ETH interface.
Output Port
The NM-11ETH has one RS-422 signal level output port. The output port is not optically isolated and can deliver
the NMEA-0183 signals from the computer system to the navigational system/instrument (e.g. from ECDIS to the
autopilot).
Typical Application
The NM-11ETH can be used as shown above to connect the gyro output directly to the ECS. In case a
distribution interface is already installed like the NM-251A shown above, the NM-11ETH is suggested to be connected
to an output port of the interface and have the fail-safe functionality also in the ECS.

Power Supply
The NM-11ETH can be powered within the range of 10-32 Volt DC. The nominal voltage of 24 Volt DC is advised
for powering the device in normal operation.
Power input port features protection for incorrect polarity connection of the supplying voltage and a PTC
resettable Fuse in case of overload.

Notes:
1.
Jumper array J1 is used to select between the optically isolated input Port and the expansion connector
K5. The K5 connector is used to interconnect the NM-11ETH to other nuova marea products (power/data
connection)
J1-2 closed: Selects the optically isolated port (connector RX) for input
J1-1 closed: Selects the K5 expansion connector data lines for input
J1-1 & J1-2 closed: Not applicable, data corruption may occur
2.
Jumper MD is used for selecting the service mode (initial firmware programming for the Serial over
Ethernet interface). It should always be open (default).
