Operation
The NM-11ETH can acquire serial NMEA-0183 signals provided that these follow the 4.800-38.400/8/N/1
standard. The signal is received at the target computer application via the Serial over Ethernet interface, either by
creating a virtual serial port (VSP), or directly from the assigned UDP socket. An output from the computer software
(e.g. signal to the autopilot from the ECDIS) can be delivered via the same Serial over Ethernet Interface to the
output port carried in RS-422 signal level format.
Input Port
The NM-11ETH has one input port that can be connected to any NMEA-0183 output capable equipment such us
GPS, Gyro, LOG, AIS etc. provided that it follows the 4.800-38.400/8/N/1 standard. The input port is optically
isolated as required from the NMEA-0183 protocol, thus data (-) pole should never been connected to the NM-11ETH
GND terminal. If the instrument’s talker port is single ended, connect that terminal to the RX (+) input and tide the
RX (-) to instrument’s ground. If an RS-232 signal level is connected the ground pole (GND) should be connected
to RX (+) and the data pole (TXD) to RX (-) respectively. The input port can acquire NMEA-0183 sentences carried
in TTL, RS-232 and RS-485/422 signal levels.
The Serial over Ethernet interface is used for connecting to the target computer system. An Ethernet Switch
(not supplied) is required when connecting one or more NM-11ETH interfaces to the computer system. Power over
Ethernet functionality is not yet implemented in the NM-11ETH interface.
Output Port
The NM-11ETH has one RS-422 signal level output port. The output port is not optically isolated and can deliver
the NMEA-0183 signals from the computer system to the navigational system/instrument (e.g. from ECDIS to the
autopilot).
Typical Application
The NM-11ETH can be used as shown above to connect the gyro output directly to the ECS. In case a
distribution interface is already installed like the NM-251A shown above, the NM-11ETH is suggested to be connected
to an output port of the interface and have the fail-safe functionality also in the ECS.
