Help at Hand
Your SmartLinQ guide

4
Hello
This guide tells you how to get started with your
SmartLinQ and how it works with the Help at Hand service.
Your SmartLinQ works in two different ways.
• You set it up yourself through the Help at Hand
website.
• An organisation sets it up for you.
If you got your SmartLinQ from an organisation, a staff
member might have already set up a profile for you on the
Help at Hand website.
If you’re setting up the SmartLinQ yourself, go to the
Help at Hand website to set up your profile. Read the
Help at Hand website guide to find out how to do that
(or read how to change your settings if your profile’s
already set up).
On the website you can set up information like what you
want to do in case of a serious incident or situation, and
where you‘d like your safe zones to be. Any settings you
save online will work hand-in-hand with the SmartLinQ, so
make sure everything there stays up to date. Or if you got
it from an organisation, you can ask them to do it for you.
Once you’ve set everything up online, your SmartLinQ will
be ready to do exactly what you need it to.
If you’re unsure about anything, get in touch with the
organisation that gave you the SmartLinQ.

Get set up
Before you start using your SmartLinQ, there
are some important things to remember:
• Your SmartLinQ relies on network coverage. If you go
where there’s no coverage, it won’t work.
• Your SmartLinQ uses location services to find you if
needed. These can vary in their accuracy.
• It also has a fall detector. This is switched off when you
first receive the SmartLinQ to prevent false alarms. You
can switch it on using the Help at Hand website, or by
asking the organisation that gave it to you to do this.
• The fall detector is as accurate as it can be, but in a
small number of cases it may not detect a fall, or could
go off by accident.
• We may disconnect the service if there is misuse, such as
repeated pressing of the Panic button.

Your SmartLinQ’s ready to use, but you should charge it
fully before getting started.
To do this, you need to:
1. plug your charger into an electrical socket. Make sure
the socket is switched on
2. plug the other end into the Power socket on your
SmartLinQ. You should see the Power light flashing.
When your SmartLinQ’s fully charged, the Power light will
stop flashing and become a constant light.
If your battery’s running low, your SmartLinQ will beep to
let you know. You’ll get:
• three beeps when you have 40% power left
• one long beep when there’s 20% power left.
It’ll also beep to warn you of a number of other different
things. This depends on what you’ve set up on the Help at
Hand website.

Start using
your SmartLinQ
Switching your SmartLinQ on
1. Press and hold the red On/off button for three seconds.
2. You’ll see the Signal light come on. It’ll flash quickly
until it’s found the signal.
3. After that, the light will carry on flashing slowly.
Switching it off
Press and hold the red On/off button for three seconds
until all the lights go off.

Phone calls on
your SmartLinQ
You can make calls. But only if:
• the organisation that gave it to you has set this up
for you
• you’re on an O2 tariff that lets you do this.
Your organisation can tell you more about this.
If you’re able to make phone calls, you can do it using the
SmartLinQ’s speed dials. You can set them up using the
Help at Hand website. Or the organisation that gave you
your SmartLinQ might already have set it up for you.
To make a call
1. Press the relevant speed dial button.
2. Wait for the beep.
3. Press the green Call/answer button.
910
To answer a call
Press the green Call/answer button.
To end a call
Press the red Hang up button (it’s the same as the
On/off button).
Reject a call
While the SmartLinQ’s ringing, press the red Hang up
button (it’s the same as the On/off button).

Changing the volume
Turn the volume up during a call by pressing the top half of
the Volume button.
Turn the volume down by pressing the bottom half of the
Volume button.
Locking the keys
Slide the Keypad lock button up. This will lock all of the
buttons except the Panic button.
11 12
To send for help
Slide the Panic button up. Your SmartLinQ
will automatically call the alarm response
centre. And if your location’s available,
it’ll send that to them. Someone from the
alarm response centre will answer
the call and find out if you’re okay.
Your SmartLinQ has a built-in fall
detector. This is switched off when you
first receive the SmartLinQ to prevent
false alarms. You can switch it on using the Help at Hand
website, or by asking the organisation that gave it to
you to do this for you. Someone from the alarm response
centre will call you if the SmartLinQ detects that you have
had a fall. Or if you move out of a safe zone, or into a
no-go zone that has been set up.
The SmartLinQ’s designed to automatically answer calls
from the alarm response centre. So you should be able
to talk to someone without having to press the green
Call/answer button.
Tip: When you use auto-answer, your Microphone will
automatically be at top volume. And your Speaker will
be at medium volume.

Problem
After I turn my
SmartLinQ on,
the Signal light
keeps flashing
rapidly.
My SmartLinQ
can’t find my
location.
My SmartLinQ
won’t switch on.
I can’t switch my
SmartLinQ off.
Reason
The signal might
be too weak, so
your SmartLinQ
can’t connect to
the network.
You’re out
of range of a
satellite signal.
The battery isn’t
charged.
You haven’t held
the red On/off
button down for
long enough.
To fix it...
Go to an area
where the
network signal’s
stronger.
Go to an area
where there’s a
better satellite
signal, like
outside or
away from tall
buildings.
Make sure
your charger’s
connected
properly at both
the mains and
your SmartLinQ.
Hold the red On/
off button down
for three seconds.
Take the battery
out. Leave it
out for three
seconds, then put
it back in. Your
SmartLinQ should
then be off.
Troubleshooting
If the alarm response centre can’t hear you
and they’re worried about you
If the alarm response centre gets in touch with you and
you can’t speak, they will do what you asked them to do in
an emergency according to your Help at Hand profile.
The Help at Hand website guide shows you how to make
changes to your detailed settings for sending for help.
If you got this SmartLinQ from an organisation, a staff
member may have set these up already.
