ABOUT BLOOD PRESSURE
What is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is a measure of the force of blood flowing against the
walls of the arteries. Arterial blood pressure is
constantly changing during
the course of the heart's cycle. The highest pressure in the cycle is called the Systolic Blood
Pressure; the lowest is the Diastolic Blood Pressure. Both pressure readings, the Systolic and Diastolic, are necessary to
enable a doctor to evaluate the status of a paent's blood pressure.
We recommend contacng your physician if you see this indicator frequently
Why Measuring Blood Pressure at Home?
Many factors such as physical acvity, anxiees, or the me of day, can influence your blood pressure. A single
measurement may not be sufficient for an accurate diagnosis. Thus it is beer to try and measure your blood pressure at
the same me each day, to get an accurate indicaon of any changes in blood pressure. Blood pressure is typically low
in the morning and increases from aernoon to evening. It is lower in the summer and higher in the winter.
Classificaon of Blood Pressure by WHO
The World Health Organizaon (WHO) and the Internaonal Society of Hypertension (ISH) developed the Blood
Pressure Classificaon shown in this figure. This classificaon is based on the blood pressure values measured on
people in a sing posion in outpaent departments of hospitals.
What is Irregular Heartbeat?
An irregular heartbeat is defined as a heartbeat rhythm that varies by 25% from the average of all heartbeats during
the systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurement. It is important that you are relaxed, remain sll and do not talk
during measurements.
There is no universally accepted definion of hypotension. However, those having the systolic pressure below
100 mmHg are assumed to be hypotensive.
