AMX-4 Portable Amplified Speaker System
Your Optimus AMX-4 Portable Ampli-
fied Speaker System lets you take ex-
cellent stereo sound with you almost
anywhere. You can connect the
speakers to any personal audio
source, such as a cassette player, por-
table CD player, or radio with a 1/8-inch
jack. Its bass and treble boost controls
let you adjust high and low frequency
response for enhanced sound.
CONNECTING POWER
Using Batteries
You can power the system from four C
batteries. For best performance, we
recommend RadioShack alkaline bat-
teries.
Follow these steps to install batteries
in each speaker.
1. Lift the tab on the battery compart-
ment cover in the direction of the
arrow and remove the cover.
2. Install two C batteries as indicated
by the polarity symbols (+ and –) in-
side the compartment.
3. Replace the cover.
4. Repeat Steps 1–3 for the other
speaker.
Note: If the sound becomes weak or the
red indicator dims, replace the batteries.
Caution: To avoid damage to the sys-
tem, remove the batteries if you do not
plan to use the speakers for a month or
more, or if you plan to use AC or DC
power.
Using AC Power
You can power the speakers from a
standard AC outlet with an AC adapter
(not supplied), available at your local
RadioShack store.
Cautions:
• You must use an AC adapter that
supplies 9 volts DC and delivers at
least 500 milliamps. Its center tip
must be set to positive and its plug
must correctly fit the system's DC 9V
500 mA jack. Using an adapter that
does not meet these specifications
could seriously damage the system
or the adapter.

• Be sure you connect the adapter as
instructed, and disconnect the
adapter from the AC outlet before
you disconnect it from the system.
Otherwise, the unconnected plug
might touch some metal and dam-
age the adapter.
Follow these steps to power the system
from an AC outlet.
1. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into
the system’s DC 9V jack.
2. Plug the adapter into a standard AC
outlet.
Using Vehicle Battery Power
You can power the speakers from your
vehicle's battery with a DC adapter (not
supplied), available at your local Ra-
dioShack store.
Cautions:
• Your vehicle must have a 12-volt
DC, negative-ground electrical sys-
tem.
• You must use a DC adapter that
supplies 9 volts and delivers at least
500 milliamps. Its center tip must be
set to positive, and its plug must cor-
rectly fit the system’s DC 9V jack.
Using an adapter that does not meet
these specifications could seriously
damage the system or the adapter.
• Be sure you connect the adapter as
instructed, and disconnect the
adapter from the cigarette lighter be-
fore you disconnect it from the sys-
tem. Otherwise, the unconnected
plug might touch some metal in the
vehicle and damage the adapter
and/or the vehicle’s electrical sys-
tem.
Follow these steps to power the system
from your vehicle’s battery:
1. If necessary, set the adapter's volt-
age switch to 9V.
2. Insert the adapter’s barrel plug into
the system’s DC 9V jack.
3. Plug the adapter’s large plug into
the vehicle’s cigarette lighter socket.
OPERATION
Notes:
• Be sure the audio sources power is
off and its volume control is set to its
minimum level.

2. Turn on the audio source and adjust
the volume to a comfortable listen-
ing level.
3. To turn the amplifier on, press POW-
ER. The red indicator lights.
Note: The system’s volume varies
with the audio sources volume level.
Use the audio source's volume con-
trol to set the volume.
4. Press BASS in for enhanced low fre-
quency response or out for normal
response.
5. Press TREBLE in for enhanced high
frequency response or out for nor-
mal response.
6. To set built-in amplifier off, press
POWER again.
Note: If the audio source’s output power
does not exceed 750 mW, you can use
the speakers with POWER set to OFF.
Volume will be lower than if you used
the amplifier.
CARE
To enjoy your speaker system for a long
time:
• Keep the speaker system dry. If it
gets wet, wipe it dry immediately.
• Use and store the speaker system
only in normal temperature environ-
ments.
• Handle the speaker system gently
and carefully. Don’t drop it.
• Keep the speaker system away from
dust and dirt.
• Wipe the speaker system with a
damp cloth occasionally to keep it
looking new.
Modifying or tampering with the speaker
system’s internal components can
cause a malfunction and invalidate its
warranty. If your speaker system is not
performing as it should, take it to your lo-
cal RadioShack store for assistance.
